Chapter 58: Three First Discoverers, Part One

Time passes...

"By the way, did you see yesterday's Tokyo Derby?" Mitsuhiko asked excitedly, the Detective Boys were walking home from school.

"The Spirits versus Noir match." Genta beamed.

"Hide got a hat trick too." Ayumi gushed.

"Rum?" Haibara echoed after Conan's question. "'Daccha'?"

"Not the comic character." Conan gawked, realizing Haibara was referring to Lum Invader. "The liquor."

"I have no idea what you're talking about." Haibara refuted. "I told you before, I don't know much about liquor. But I know the Organization's number two's codename is Rum. At least, that's what I heard while I was there. I never met them, though. While I was in the organization, I heard all kinds of descriptions: a large brawny man, an effeminate man, an old man. Some people claimed they were all his doubles."

"What about Rum?" Genta cut in. "You were just talking about it."

"I bet you're thirsty after playing soccer in the park." Conan quickly fibbed a reason. "So, I'm looking to see if the shop over there was selling ramune."

"That kid is still there." Ayumi spotted Ganno Mamoru staring at an apartment unit on the side street. "The boy standing in the other street." she pointed. "He was standing there on our way to the park. He was staring in that direction then, too."

"Let's ask him." Conan suggested. "What are you..." he started and Ganno began wailing.

"Obaa-chan... they killed obaa-chan..." Ganno sobbed.

"Did you see someone kill her?" Conan pressed.

"No, but she told me." Ganno replied. "Three men are going to visit obaa-chan's apartment. If she doesn't come out after they leave, she'd probably be killed, so I should call the police. She's not coming out." he wailed. "It's about thirty minutes since the third man left."

"Do you remember what the three men looked like?" Conan asked.

"There was a really big man, a young guy with long hair like a girl and an old man with white hair." Ganno nodded.

"In any case, show us the obaa-san's room." Conan instructed.

"Okay." Ganno led the way.

In front of Komai Yasue's unit...

"I don't know her." Ganno admitted. "She'd talk to me when I was playing alone in the park. Since I moved here, I don't have any friends. I don't have a dad or mom. While I was on a field trip, they got involved in a 'robin murder'. I'm staying with my auntie, but she's too busy to play with me. I asked to come to her house to play before, but she wouldn't let me. But today, she made an exception and invited me. She writes stories for TV shows. She told me all about the story she was going to write."

"There's no answer." Mitsuhiko noted when no one answered the doorbell.

"Excuse me." Genta pulled the door lever. "It's unlocked." he opened the door to revealed Komai hanging by her doorway.

"Don't come in." Conan stopped Ganno from entering. "Haibara, call the police."

"Shouldn't we call an ambulance, too?" Mitsuhiko asked.

"Look around her feet." Conan gestured. "If this were really a suicide, there would be a stool or something by her feet. Since that's missing, it means someone killed her and made this look like a suicide. It was probably one of the three men this kid saw. If it's been about thirty minutes since the third man left, we're too late."

After a while...

"So, you were watching this apartment at the woman's request?" Megure interviewed Ganno. "And after three men came and left, you came here to find her like this? "The deceased is scriptwriter, Komai Yasue-san. If this is murder, we'll have to find people among her associates who may have resented her and call them for a lineup with this kid."

"We have the names of the three people the victim was meeting today." Takagi looked at the victim's laptop. "They're in the scheduling software installed on the computer on the desk. This afternoon, she met Sakaba Ronpei, Habanaka Kuramichi and Shibakaru Denji. It's also written on the notebook in the drawer and calendar, so it's probably correct. Also, we can't find the 500,000 yen the victim withdrew from the bank today anywhere."

"So, they killed her for the money, made it look like suicide and ran." Megure concluded. "Find out who they are and call the station."

"What's wrong?" Ayumi asked, seeing Ganno's frightened expression.

"They're here..." Ganno stammered. "The three men who came to the woman's room are here."

"Could you point them out while keeping your face hidden behind the railing?" Conan asked.

"That stocky man over there, that long-haired man to the side and the old man behind him." Ganno picked out the three suspects from the gathered crowd.

"Inspector Megure." Conan turned.

"Got it." Megure nodded after Conan whispered into his ear. "Takagi-kun." he sent Takagi to round up the three suspects.

"Give me a break, officer." Sakaba complained. "I just came to check out the incident in the neighborhood. Why am I being questioned?"

"We're just passers-by." Shibakaru agreed.

"Or do we look like wanted men?" Habanaka asked.

"A witness saw you visiting the victim's apartment between 2pm to 3 pm, the presumed time of her death." Megure stated. "The witness also said the victim, Komai Yasue-san, asked him to watch the apartment because one of the three men coming to visit may kill her."

"Kill her?" Sakaba echoed. "Isn't this a suicide?"

"Normally, a hanging is a suicide." Habanaka reasoned.

"How did you know the victim hung herself?" Megure frowned.

"It seems I can't hide it." Shibakaru sighed. "I am Shibakaru Denji. We became drinking buddies after a chance meeting at a bar. This photo proves it." he showed the detectives his phone's wallpaper. "She said she was worried so I came to talk, but I had no idea it driven her to suicide."

"So, she was already dead when you arrived?" Takagi asked.

"Yes." Shibakaru nodded. "I have no idea what she was concerned about. If you want to ask, try asking these two; not that I know who they are."

"I came to get the money she borrowed." Sakaba informed. "We're old friends, so l lent her a bunch of money. Now that I need that money, so I asked for it back."

"Was the amount 500,000 yen?" Takagi inquired.

"How do you know that?" Sakaba was surprised.

"I'm actually a producer at TV Tohto." Habanaka spoke up. "I hired Komai-san to write a script for this fall's special mystery program. She said the script was ready, so I came to pick it up. It was just inside the door, so I took it and gave it to my AD."

"Was she already hanging, then?" Takagi inquired.

"Yes." Habanaka nodded. "I didn't know what was worrying her, but the script was due, so I didn't have time to think about it."

"But, wouldn't you normally call the police if you saw that?" Conan cut in.

"He's right." Haibara agreed. "No matter what you had to do..."

"You'll call the cops." Genta retorted.

"Especially if you knew the victim." Mitsuhiko glared.

"Surely you didn't have a reason you couldn't tell the police." Conan smirked.

"Who's that kid in glasses?" Habanaka asked.

"They were the first ones to discover the body." Megure supplied. "Though, it seems you're the actual first discoverers. In any case, we'd like to question you separately, so come inside one at a time."

"I've got an alibi." Sakaba spoke up. "The money was supposed to be deposited by 2 pm, but when I checked the ATM, there was no money. So, I came here to get it myself. I got scared when I saw her dead body, so I rushed back to the ATM. I had to pay off my card today, so I was forced to use the money I had. ATMs have security cameras. If you compare the time between when I left and came back with how long it takes to get from here to the bank and back, you'll know I didn't have time to kill her."

"I'll go with him to the bank and check." Takagi led Sakaba off.

"Is it all right to smoke while we wait?" Shibakaru requested. "I've got a portable ashtray."

"Go ahead, but the wind's picked up." Megure reminded. "Don't scatter the ashes."

"Did I get you with the smoke?" Shibakaru asked Habanaka, the producer was coughing due to the cigarette smoke blown into his face.

"It's all right." Habanaka assured.

"You really don't remember the order they in which came?" Megure turned to Ganno.

"No." Ganno shook his head. "I know it's them, though."

"We'll need to question them more." Megure sighed. "He really was on the ATM's security footage?" he inquired, once Takagi returned with Sakaba.

"Yes." Takagi confirmed. "But he was away from the ATM for forty minutes." he informed. "It's hardly an alibi. It takes less than twenty minutes to get there and back. He nearly escaped a few times. I think he may have been after that."

"Would you like to use mine?" Shibakaru offered Sakaba his lighter.

"Shall we get those interviews over with?" Sakaba reminded.

"You're first." Megure told Sakaba and he and Takagi led Sakaba into the unit.
