Chapter 65: Conan and Ebizo's Kabuki Jūhachiban Mystery, Part Three

Conan awoke to find himself in a basement of a building that was about to be demolished. Turning on the Wrist Flashlight on the Stun-Gun Wristwatch, he tried to find a way out.

In the taxi Hosoo hailed...

"You're going back to the rehearsal space?" Mouri echoed.

"Ebizo-san said he wanted to talk to us and the staff." Hosoo replied.

In the Detective Agency...

"Is his phone ringing?" Haibara inquired, noticing Ran had pressed the 'End Call' button for the umpteenth time.

"Yeah." Ran nodded. "I feel like something's wrong."

"If Edogawa-kun has his GPS on..." Haibara opened her laptop.

"You'd know where he is?" the Detective Boys chorused.

"Of course." Haibara ran the tracking program. "His GPS is on." she zoomed in on the location. "There he is. It's in an alleyway in Ginza 3-chome. That's odd. He's not moving."

"Let's go." Mitsuhiko was now worried.

In the Kabuki Theater rehearsal area...

"As you know, someone stole the two-faced mask I borrowed from Hosoo-san." Ebizo started. "And Hosoo-san's secretary, Takahashi-san, is dead. The playwright, Iwami-san, is in the hospital as well."

"The least suspicious person is actually the most suspicious." Mouri smirked.

"I intended to entertain audiences with a new interpretation of the Kabuki Jūhachiban's 'Nanatsu Men'." Ebizo admitted. "i regret that this project I began has turned out this way. But we cannot let this discourage us. No matter what, we must make this play a success. I appreciate your support."

"Ebizo-san." Iwami returned from the hospital. "I can't sit in the hospital while the rest of you work. I won't run anymore."

"Everyone, do you have a minute?" Megure entered with Takagi.

In the alleyway...

"Is this really the place?" Genta wondered, Haibara's program led them to the location Conan's phone was.

"Definitely." Haibara confirmed. "Try calling him."

Ran nodded and made her call. "It's in here?" she heard the faint vibrate on Conan's phone, just as Sonoko joined them.

"I hear it." Haibara agreed.

"There it is." Ran found Conan's phone lodged in the drain.

"What's it doing here?" Genta was confused.

"Let's look for him." Ran suggested.

"Ask Inspector Megure for help." Haibara proposed, spotting Conan's Criminal Tracking Glasses lying on the ground. "Get out your badges." she instructed the Detective Boys. "Split up and keep calling Edogawa-kun."

"Let's go, Sonoko." Ran pulled Sonoko off.

In the Kabuki Theater rehearsal area...

"Only Hosoo-san and Takahashi-san's prints were found on the car and case." Takagi explained, showing the gathered group the photos forensics had taken.

"The culprit was willing to kill to get his hands on that mask." Ebizo noted.

"If I had been more careful..." Yabusaki belated himself.

"It's not like that." Megure corrected.

"There are three plausible scenarios." Mouri spoke. "First, Takahashi-san stole the two-faced mask and tried to sell it to a third party. But the culprit stole the mask and killed him. Scenario Number Two: thinking he could sell the mask, the culprit stole it to negotiate with Takahashi-san to sell it back. After receiving the money, he killed him. After all, he saw his face and to shift the blame onto him, he made it look like a suicide."

"It's' definitely not suicide, right?" Ebizo asked Megure.

"Our coroner flat out says 'Definitely not'." Megure answered.

"The car and engine were wiped clean." Takagi supplied.

"A man about to kill himself wouldn't bother to wipe fingerprints." Megure agreed.

""Dad, it's an emergency." Ran's voice sounded from Mouri's phone. "What about the kid? He's missing?"

"Excuse me." Ebizo cut in, snatching the phone. "Got it." he nodded after Ran gave him the gist. "I'll be there right away. Conan-kun has gone missing somewhere around 4-chome." he informed the others. "This is my turf, so I'm going to look for him." he headed out.

After meeting up with Ran and the others...

"Let's assume someone kidnapped him." Ebizo reasoned. "It's definitely connected to the two-faced mask somehow. Could you show me the phone you found? The last call received was from Ran-san at 4:05." he checked the call log.

"He said he was at the kabuki theater then." Mitsuhiko spoke.

"Then, we missed each other." Ebizo noted. "This is right after that. He called someone just eight minutes later. Since there's no name, he must've entered the number."

"We tried calling the number, but it was off." Haibara added.

"It should be in my contacts." Ebizo pulled out his phone and pulled out his contact list. "It's Kaneko. I called a staff meeting earlier, but he wasn't there. Let's try going to Kaneko's house: President Yabusaki should know where it is."

"Edogawa-kun?" Haibara gaped, when the Detective Boys Badges started beeping.

"Guys, look for a building that's about to be demolished." Conan shouted down his badge. "It's nearby. I'm in the basement of a building being torn down."

"A building under construction in this area..." Ebizo looked around. "That's it." he spotted the lights around the construction site. "Someone let Mouri-san and the others know about this. They should be at the kabuki theater."

In the construction site...

"Stop the construction!" Ebizo roared on top of a bulldozer. "The basement." he demanded the site supervisor. "There's someone in the basement."

"This way." the site supervisor led Ebizo to the staircase leading to the basement.

"Get a wire." Ebizo shouted, finding the pathway blocked by a block of concrete. "Conan-kun, pass this under the door." he passed the thick wire through the gap. "Pass it to use through the space underneath. Stand back." he instructed, seeing the looped wire seconds later. "Pull slowly."

"Boss, it won't work." one of the demolition workers shouted. "The second floor's falling."

"Keep it in place." the site supervisor barked. "Masa, get the right side."

The excavator moved in, supporting the falling debris as the towline truck pulled the concrete slab free.

From the settling dust, Ebizo carried the exhausted Conan out.
