Chapter 66: Conan and Ebizo's Kabuki Jūhachiban Mystery, Part Four

In the construction site's office...

"You're sure?" Megure questioned Conan.

"There was a camera in the room on the bottom floor." Conan confirmed. "Normal people don't use cameras with lenses like that."

"Which means it was Kaneko." Megure mused.

"We're looking at it right now." the construction site supervisor interjected. "If it's there, I'm sorry. We checked the basement's locks, but..."

"It's not your fault." Ebizo assured. "You're victims as well. What a dastardly culprit."

"Sonoko-san and the others just left." Chiba informed.

"We found something." Takagi ran in. "We found Kaneko Eiji's body and..."

"I don't believe this." Chiba gaped at the recovered, but broken two-faced mask.

"Can it be fixed?" Ebizo asked.

"Even if we did..." Takagi trailed.

"It was inside Kaneko-san's camera bag?" Mouri inquired.

"Next to the body." the construction site supervisor nodded.

"So, he stole the mask, and while trying to finish off the kid who was closing in on him, he got caught up in it." Mouri concluded.

"That can't possibly be right." Ebizo frowned.

"Ai-chan, why are you here?" Ran was surprised to find Haibara seated on the staircase beside Conan. "I thought you went with Sonoko and the others."

"They left me here." Haibara replied.

"No way." Ran gasped. "Come down here. Detective Chiba will give you a ride home."

"What are Kogoro-oji-san and the others doing?" Conan asked.

"They're going back to the rehearsal space with Inspector Megure and the police." Ran replied.

In the Kabuki Theater rehearsal space...

"When was the last time you saw Kaneko-san?" Mouri questioned.

"This afternoon in my hospital room." Iwami answered. "He came after Ebizo-san and Conan-kun came to visit me."

"You didn't steal the two-faced mask, did you?" Mouri accused.

"Absolutely not." Iwami protested. "If I did, I wouldn't be telling you this. I couldn't stand being alone at the hospital. I did sneak out. But I had nowhere to go. Before I knew it... but I lost the paper that I wrote the door code down on. So, I went back to the hospital. I'd never come at that time before."

"I was the one who gave Iwami-san the code." Minowa spoke up.

"We just got Kaneko-san's history off his phone." Shiratori cut in. "Hosoo-san, today at 3:05, did you receive a call from Kaneko-san?"

"Weren't you in a meeting at the Beika Hotel at that time?" Mouri reminded.

"Since I was in a meeting, it must've been on silent." Hosoo checked his phone record. "I do have a call from a number I don't recognize."

The next day...

The rehearsal was being held on the main stage, with the Detective Boys, Ran, Sonoko and Mouri as the audience.

"Times may change, but humans shall never let go of their emotions." after a scene change, Ebizo and his fellow actors were now dressed in business suits.

"Marvelous." Hosoo applauded. "We could open the show tomorrow."

"I'll go get ready." Haibara proceeded to the AV control room. "Why don't you put him to sleep already?"

"Mouri-san, I did my homework." Ebizo spoke. "Was that an adequate opening performance to your detective show?"

"It's time to reveal the deduction of the great Mouri Kogoro." Mouri declared. "The case begins with the cameraman Kaneko Eiji-san. He was somebody's pawn and was killed in that basement. the culprit must have struck him with one of the blocks lying around. Kaneko-san, who stole the two-faced mask from Takahashi-san was being manipulated by the culprit, who was desperate to get his hands on the two-faced mask."

In the AV control room...

"Bring it back on." Haibara instructed the operator who had cut off the spotlight on Mouri.

In the main stage...

"The deduction I just described of Takahashi-san stealing the two-faced mask does not apply to this situation." Conan took over. "Iwami-san, the ATM's camera caught you withdrawing cash from the hospital ATM and giving them to Kaneko-san.'

"He caught me entering the building at night." Iwami winced.

"Kaneko-san knew you didn't steal the mask." Conan stated. "Yabusaki-san and Minowa-san, neither of you were threatened by Kaneko-san. This is the shot of Iwami-san entering the kabuki theatre." he had Haibara flash the photos from the AV control room. "When Iwami-san was shown these photos, he did what was told and paid. But Kaneko-san's camera also captured what happened next. Look closely." the screen showed another photo. "Iwami-san wasn't holding a case or anything else. Kaneko-san only showed you what benefited him. Kaneko-san's camera told me everything I needed to know."

"Hold on a minute." Hosoo protested when all eyes turned to him. "Didn't you hear what Mouri-san just said? Those who weren't captured by Kaneko-san's camera aren't the culprit."

"Hosoo-san, how do you know he didn't take a picture of you?" Conan asked.

"There's no way I'd be on his camera." Hosoo was confident.

"There's no way because you paid him a huge sum for the chip." Conan spoke.

"Stop joking around." Hosoo chided. "Have you forgotten that someone tried to kill me by manipulating my car?"

"Mouri Kogoro's 'Nanatsu Men'." Conan produced his own version of 'Nanatsu Men'. "Mask One."

"This morning I investigated that slope again." Takagi took the stage. "I found the drops of brake fluid started at the top of the hill and there was no fluid before that point."

"Why did you take that road?" Conan questioned. "The most direct path from your house to the theater is a straight and mostly flat road. Why did you go out of your way to go up that slope?"

"Also, nearby, I found tape with brake fluid on it." Takagi added.

"As a car enthusiast, Ebizo-san, have you figured it out?" Conan challenged. "Opening a hole in a brake hose wasn't easy, so you wrapped tape around the hose you manipulated in your garage beforehand."

"Hold on." Hosoo chuckled. "You saw the footage of the security cameras at my house."

"Mask Two." Conan cued.

"There's a convenience store in front of your house." Shiratori took over. "I compared your footage to their security camera footage."

In the AV control room...

"Video cue." Haibara played her part.

In the main stage...

The two contrasting videos were played onscreen, side-by-side.

"This is footage from the same time." Shiratori spoke. "On the right is the convenience store footage. You can see how it's the same road at the same time, but the car appeared only on one side."

"Can you think of anyone who would have access to the hardware in your home?" Conan accused. "Mask Three."

"The two-faced mask was secured at Haneda Airport." Chiba was cued in. "We also questioned the buyer, Richard-san. Apparently, he purchased the mask from Hosoo-san for a large sum of money."

"Hosoo-san, do you remember what you said?" Conan reminded.

"I can do whatever I want with my own possessions." Hosoo snapped. "That's no reason to call me a murderer."

"Mask Four." Conan declared.

"Shioji-san told us everything." Megure took the stage.

"He had me make that fake mask." Shioji admitted. "But the president instructed me to take special care of the real mask until the day of the performance."

"Shioji..." Hosoo growled. "You did this. It's money, right? You wanted money."

"I was dating Takahashi-san." Shioji shouted.

"Hosoo-san, I know your company hasn't been doing well." Conan stated. "You sold the mask for money and took out a life insurance policy on Takahashi-san. Sometimes, it's not paid out in the case of suicide, so in order to ensure it would be so soon after taking out the policy..."

"Murder was a better choice." Ebizo realized.

"What proof do you have that I did it?" Hosoo snarled.

"Isn't this your button, Hosoo-san?" Conan produced a fallen-out button. "I'm always telling them that if they're ever kidnapped or attacked, to leave some mark on their attacker." he reverted to Mouri's voice. "You can even bite down on whatever they throw over you." he piped in in his usual voice. "Your teeth marks or saliva can serve as evidence later." he changed back to Mouri's voice.

"What's wrong, Mouri-san?" Hosoo mocked. "You of all people should know better. Shioji, tell them when I changed my jacket. Kid, when did you get that button? Are you planning on using a kid to pin Kaneko's murder on me, too?"

"Kogoro-oji-san, when did I say jacket?" Conan whined. "He's so mean." ducking behind the seats, he changed back to Mouri's voice. "Hosoo-san, Conan only said that the culprit covered him with something.

In the AV control room...

"Finish him." Haibara instructed smugly.

"I'll show them in rapid succession." the AV operator flashed the photo series.

In the main stage...

"This button of yours was found in the engine room of the car where Takahashi-san died." Conan revealed.

"These are the traffic drums next to the railroad crossing." Takagi added as the next photo came up. "You intended to crash into these."

"This is inside your garage." Shiratori stated, the next photo was flashed. "You can see the disposable gloves you used to keep the brake fluid out of your hands."

"This is the building your previous office was in." Chiba remarked, the next photo was shown. "It's the building that's currently being demolished.

"The basement contained the staff office." Takagi noted, the next photo came up. "No wonder you knew so much about it."

"How?" Hosoo stammered. "How do you have those photos?"

"Kaneko-san saved all the pictures he sold to you on his computer." Conan answered. "He was going to use them to blackmail you again."

"My company was going to go under." Hosoo sank to his knees.

"No company is worth taking human lives to save." Ebizo snapped.

"The place you're standing in now is a place for those who hone their craft daily and hold themselves to a high standard." Conan spoke. A man like you don't belong here."

Later that evening...

"I'm actually surprised you manage to knock off on time today." Amuro remarked, starting up his car.

"We nailed Hosoo-san for the two murders." Ami strapped herself in. "From I heard from Shiratori, your master put on his version of 'Nanatsu Men'."

"Too bad I wasn't there to see it." Amuro noted, driving out of the police headquarters carpark.
