Chapter 102: The Woman with White Hands, Part One

Time passes...

"You live in a high-rise apartment, Wakasa-sensei?" Mitsuhiko was amazed when Wakasa Rumi brought the Detective Boys back to her place to repair the tiger folding screen that had been damaged earlier that day.

"It's just like Ayumi-chan's place." Genta noted, the group stepped out of the elevator.

"Yoshida-san, you live in a high-rise, too?" Wakasa blinked. "This way." she led the kids to her unit; Conan spotted a long-haired blond woman pressing the doorbell to Wakasa's neighbor's door.

"She was wearing a lot of makeup." Mitsuhiko remarked, the woman then stormed off after receiving no response.

"Seems like she had business with Wakasa-sensei's neighbor." Haibara noted.

"What does your neighbor do?" Conan asked their deputy homeroom teacher.

"I think he's some sort of sports athlete." Wakasa unlocked her door. "I've only seen him a few times, so I don't know him well."

Later that night...

"It's done." Ayumi cheered, the tiger was finally repainted.

"In that case, to thank you for helping me, I'll make you some omurice." Wakasa proceeded to the kitchen.

"Your neighbor's awfully loud." Haibara deathpanned, the group settling down for a late dinner when they heard loud music coming from next door.

"I hear it all the time." Wakasa explained. "Apparently, he plays music on a timer instead of setting an alarm."

"It's not stopping, though." Conan pointed out.

"That's odd." Wakasa noted. "Normally, it stops pretty quickly."

"I'm gonna go complain." Genta decided.

In front of Banno Teigo's door...

"You're being too loud." he banged his fist on the door, Conan following him out. "Wake up. He's not home." he then pushed the door handle to find the door unlocked. "So, he is home."

In Banno's unit...

"It must be that stereo." Genta spotted the stereo in the living room upon entering. "How do you turn this thing off? I'll just unplug this." he pulled out the stereo's plug from the socket.

"What's wrong, Genta?" Conan noticed Genta's frightened expression when the over-sized boy turned to see the gruesome scene on the living room floor.

Ayumi turned to where Genta was staring at and screamed when she saw the fallen Banno and Iiyama Kurumi on the floor.

"That was loud." Banno winced, sitting up. "Who are you kids?" he spotted the Detective Boys. "You shouldn't come barging into people's homes uninvited."

"Next to you..." Mitsuhiko stammered.

"What is this?" Banno exclaimed, backing off when he saw Iiyama's body.

"Looks like someone bludgeoned her to death." Conan felt for a pulse. "Wakasa-sensei, call the police."

"Come to think of it, some strange woman zapped me in my doorway." Banno supplied.

"You have something on your right cheek." Haibara pointed out. Bringing out her handphone, she switched it to selfie mode.

"'I love you'?" Banno gawked at the hastily scribbled sentence.

"Did you make the dead woman write that?" Mitsuhiko demanded.

"This isn't Kurumi's handwriting." Banno protested. Spotting the two polaroids at his feet, he picked one up and gaped. "It's her. She did it. Look." he showed the photo to the kids. "This woman with the white hands wrote it; after knocking me out and killing Kurumi."

After Megure's team was called in...

"It's true." Banno insisted. "You have to believe me, officers. A strange woman suddenly showed up at my place this evening. The moment I opened my door, she zapped me with a stun gun and knocked me out. When I came to, these kids were in my apartment and were yelling. They told me to look next to me, so I did. That's when I saw my girlfriend Kurumi on the floor, bleeding from her head."

"By the way, what about those red letters on your right cheek?" Takagi inquired.

"That strange woman wrote this." Banno answered. "This Polaroid that was on the floor next to me proves it. This woman with white hands is writing on my cheek. Kurumi was supposed to come to my place at 6:30 pm. She must've have entered without realizing the strange woman was inside. That woman killed her when they ran into each other."

"An imaginary girlfriend." Haibara spoke up. "I've seen it on TV and magazines. Men put foundation and nail polish on their hands and take selfies to make it look like they have girlfriends. Maybe that's how you took that photo."

"Look closely." Banno pressed. "My right hand is behind my head. I couldn't write this clearly on my own face."

"Then, maybe you made the woman write that on your face before killing her." Mitsuhiko cut in.

"Don't be ridiculous." Banno snapped. "There was another photo. She took a photo before she wrote on my face. Kurumi couldn't have written it. Officers, can I erase this writing on my face? It's creeping me out."

"Once forensics has taken photos." Megure turned to the forensics team. "Do you remember what the woman who knocked you out with a stun gun looked like?"

"Since I lost consciousness almost instantly, I only got a quick look at her." Banno admitted. "She was wearing a board-brimmed hat and sunglasses. She was wearing a lot of makeup."

"We saw her standing in front of the door to this apartment." Ayumi supplied.

"She rang the doorbell a bunch of times." Genta added.

"When she realized he wasn't home, she banged the door and clicked her tongue." Mitsuhiko stated.

"Come to think of it, she had a scrunchy on her right hand just like the woman in the photo." Haibara recalled.

"She was relatively tall." Conan remarked. "Just about your height."

"Did you recognize the woman?" Takagi asked.

"I had my first win the other day and published a photo collection." Banno recalled. "I've had an increase in weird fans."

"Are you the professional golfer, Banno Teigo-san?" Takagi recognized the golfer. "Then the murdered woman is the model you were rumored to be dating..."

"Iiyama Kurumi." Banno confirmed.

"Is she famous?" Megure wondered.

"Her father is one of the lawyers on the Shiba Clan legal panel." Ami supplied. "Iiyama-san was being promoted as a socialite model."

"Why did the murdered Iiyama-san come here?" Megure asked.

"She was just coming to hang out." Banno replied. "She's my girlfriend."

"You were breaking up." Wakasa cut in.

"I've been wondering, but who are you?" Takagi blinked.

"I'm their assistant homeroom teacher, Wakasa Rumi." Wakasa introduced herself. "I actually live next door. Today, the children helped me paint the screen we're using in a play tomorrow. We heard loud music coming from next door. Normally, it stops immediately, but today, it kept playing. So, we came to check things out and found the front door unlocked. That's how we ended up here."

"What do you mean by breaking up?" Megure pressed.

"This morning on my way to school, I passed by this apartment." Wakasa replied. 'I heard the two of them arguing. I think he said he wasn't taking her with him on his international tour. She demanded he pay her damages for breaking up with her. He said he'd cook for her, so they could talk about it tonight. So, she asked him to make paella. And he said it would be their last supper. I may have misheard them." she backtracked.

"You haven't cooked anything, though." Conan pointed out, checking the almost empty fridge. "We didn't smell any food when we entered the apartment.

"The refrigerator's pretty empty, too." Ami noted.

"I was just about to go buy ingredients when the strange woman knocked me out." Banno defended.

"When the strange woman rang the doorbell, you were out." Conan reminded, shutting the fridge door. "You should've bought the ingredients on your way home."

"I do what I want." Banno snorted.

"See if any of the other residents have seen the woman." Megure sent Takagi off. "Wakasa-sensei, could you return to the apartment with the children?"
