Chapter 106: Result of the Draw

Time passes...

"Genta-kun, you're supposed to kick it into the goal." Mitsuhiko deathpanned, Genta kicking the soccer ball over the low wall and into a neighboring house.

"I'll go get it." Genta sighed, the Detective Boys having dragged out Professor Agasa for a soccer game. Seeing no one was answering the door after he pressed the doorbell, he headed around the house to find a way in, only to let out a horrified scream moments later.

"Genta, are you okay?" Conan was first to run to the terrified boy.

"That..." Genta stammered, pointing a shaky finger at the stabbed Kawai Shinzo slumped on the armchair in the study.

"Professor, call an ambulance." Conan instructed, the others arriving. "Someone inside has collapsed."

"I don't think anyone is there." Genta stated, Conan was banging his fist on the door. "I rang the doorbell earlier."

"Then, we'll have to break a window." Conan decided.

"What's all that noise?" an exhausted Kawai Yuko opened the door, "Wait, boy-ya." she blinked when Conan kicked off his shoes and dashed into the house.

Entering the study, Conan spotted Shinzo had two blood splatters on his shirt and the fallen Shibata Kensuke on the ground. "Professor, call the police and not the ambulance." he amended. "They're both probably dead."

After Megure's team was called in...

"There are two victims." Takagi reported. "The large man is Kawai Shinzo-san, the resident of this home. He was stabbed in the stomach, but Mizuno-san determined the cause of death was blood loss from the ice pick in his chest. The weapon is an object kept in this room. The smaller man on the floor is Shibata Kensuke-san; Mizuno-san has confirmed his cause of death was a head injury. There's not much blood, but he most likely stuck his head on the armrest of the sofa. The blood on Shibata-san's sweater matched Kawai-san's."

"The blood must've gotten onto him when he stabbed him." Megure concluded. "When did they die?"

"About two hours ago." Ami supplied.

"The bodies were discovered about an hour ago." Takagi added.

"And they're the ones who found the body." Megure sighed, turning to Professor Agasa and the kids.

"Also, they're the president and former employee of a real estate company." Takagi stated. "Several months ago, Shibata-san was fired for embezzling company funds."

"Who is she?" Megure turned to Yuko.

"Kawai-san's wife, Yuko-san." Takagi replied. "She was sleeping in the second-floor bedroom when the incident happened."

"This room showed signs of a struggle." Megure surveyed the crime scene. "It must've made a lot of noise."

"I asked her about that." Takagi noted. "She said she had been looking after her mother all morning and was too exhausted to notice. The bedroom's far away from this room."

"Madam, I'm sorry to question you when your husband is dead." Megure approached Yuko. "Had your husband arranged to meet Shibata-san here?"

"Today was his repayment date." Yuko answered. "Shibata-san was using the money he embezzled to pay for his sick family's hospital bills. My husband agreed to rehire him if he returned the money by today."

"You have a foot injury." Megure noticed.

"I sprained it the other day." Yuko explained. "My mother's in far worse shape than I am. This is nothing. If I had been awake; if I'd noticed something was wrong, this wouldn't have happened to my husband."

"You weren't answering the door, even though we kept calling." Conan piped in. "Did the sound of the intercom wake you'?"

"That large boy's scream awoke me." Yuko answered.

"Genta?" Conan blinked.

"The intercom's not working right now." Yuko added. "It doesn't always work."

"Let's step outside." Professor Agasa ushered the kids off.

"According to the employees of Kawai Real Estate, Kawai-san said he didn't intend to rehire Shibata-san." Takagi informed Megure after receiving a call. It was just an excuse to make him to return the money."

"He failed to fulfill his promise after the money was returned." Megure noted. "If that was the reason, then Shibata-san got hostile, grabbed a weapon from the desk..."

"And murdered Kawai-san." Takagi finished.

"So, we should assume Shibata-san was pushed forcefully and fell, and not that he slipped and hit his head." Megure laid out the possible scenario.

"The room's windows and the front door are locked." Takagi reminded. "It seems unlikely that they were killed by an outsider. Yuko-san was telling truth about her foot injury and caring for her mother. Inspector, can we safely assume they killed each other after getting into a fight over money troubles?" he suggested, after forensics transported the evidence back to the police headquarters.

"I think so." Megure concurred. "Yuko-san, we'd like to ask you more questions about their relationship and the case."

"Hold on." Professor Agasa voiced, Conan borrowing his voice. "I thought I'd give you an accurate version of the events. Don't you realize that there was no way for Shibata-san to kill Kawai-san? It should be obvious if you consider the difference in their height."

"Kawai-san was 85 centimeters." Takagi referred to his notes. "Shibata-san was 160 centimeters. They do have contrasting builds."

"If the smaller Shibata-san tried to stab the much taller Kawai-san in the chest, he would use a reverse grip." Conan reminded. "Wouldn't the blood end up on his pinkie finger? There are other things that don't make sense; like Shibata-san's button. Conan-kun told me he saw Shibata-san's third button was missing when he looked under his sweater. Even if the button came off after the struggle, it's hard to believe an unexposed button could have ended up inside the pot on the shelf. There's one more thing: Yuko-san, you were in this room until we arrived. Otherwise, how did you know it was Genta-kun who screamed? The second floor doesn't have windows facing the yard. You couldn't have known which child screamed just from the sound. But you knew: that's because you were watching Genta-kun from this room when he screamed. The ice pick and the blood in his hand, the blood in the potted plant, and at that time, this house was locked. When you put it all together, the only one person who could've killed Shinzo-san was the person who was inside the house at that time. It's you, Yuko-san."

"But how did she stab him?" Takagi wondered. "She's not very tall, and her foot's injured."

"What if Kawai-san had been stabbed in the stomach by Shibata-san and was sitting in a chair?" Conan posted a question. "A woman with a foot injury could stab a badly injured victim. Shibata-san was most likely already dead when you looked into the room. I don't know what happened between you two then, but you decided to kill him, grabbed the ice pick and finished off your gravely injured husband."

"You're making all of it up." Yuko retorted. "I knew about the scream because I overheard Genta telling the police about it. There's no proof that I did it."

"it's the button." Conan revealed. "The button flew into the pot while they were fighting. You panicked and didn't notice it had fallen off. Shibata-san wasn't wearing a sweater. Yuko-san, the sweater he was wearing belongs to you. Not knowing what to do with your bloody clothes, you realized Shibata-san was about the same height as you. To make it look like he's done it, you put your clothes on him. It was a color a man might wear. It may have been missed if they were assumed to have killed each other, but a quick investigation should reveal if you were wearing the sweater."

"It was what he said." Yuko admitted, recalling how she had returned from grocery shopping to find the gravely injured Shinzo and the dead Shibata. Shinzo then revealed that he had no intention of rehiring Shibata even if he had returned to money since Shibata's family died in hospital. He then scoffed that Shibata had it coming for him and that helping useless old people was wasting money. That had hit Yuko right in the face: Shinzo had directly implied that helping her mother was wasting money. In a rage, she pulled out the ice pick and stabbed Shinzo a second time. "I'd put up with my arrogant husband for so long." she wept. "But his callous words brought me to my senses. I even tried to blame Shibata-san."
