Chapter 117: The Heartfelt Strap, Part One

Time passes...

"Either way, give up on that school trip." Haibara was insistent on refusing Conan the temporal ed by APTX 4869 antidote, the Detective Boys were on the return train back to Professor Agasa's house after watching a Big Osaka vs Tokyo Spirits soccer match.

The train suddenly skidded to a stop as it entered Beika Station, causing the passengers to lose their balance and several of time, Genta and Haibara included, to fall to the ground.

In Professor Agasa's house...

"You met Higo in the stands, huh?" Professor Agasa mused. "That's great."

"He was really cool." Ayumi gushed. "Ai-chan was blushing. And she got a Higo-san phone strap."

"I was very lucky." Haibara beamed.

"I got a photo of it." Mitsuhiko pulled out his phone. "Wait, what?" he blinked. "It's recording." he realized he had set his camera to record mode. "It seems to have started while we were on the train. I seem to have pressed the button when I made sure I hadn't dropped my phone after the train suddenly stopped and we fell."

"Ai-chan, is your phone okay?" Ayumi asked.

"It's right here in..." Haibara pulled out her phone, before letting out a shocked shriek. "It's gone." she stammered, the Higo phone strap was missing. "The Higo-san strap I attached to my phone is gone."

"I'm sure you'll be able to buy one online soon." Conan assured.

"I can't." Haibara snapped. "That strap is special. Today, Higo-san... and he touched it. There's only one strap like that in the world." she wailed, before passing out, her brain short-circuiting.

"Where did we lose it?" Mitsuhiko wondered.

"Probably when we fell on the train." Genta guessed.

"Mitsuhiko, let me see that video you accidentally recorded on your phone." Conan requested.

"That man next to the train doors..." Ayumi exclaimed as the others watched the video.

"He's picking something up." Mitsuhiko noted.

"Isn't that Higo-san's strap?" Genta wondered, Conan enlarging the image.

"Maybe he delivered it to the station's lost and found." Professor Agasa suggested. "It's at the station in Chiyari City." he informed the kids after receiving confirmation.

"Is something the matter?" Subaru made his way into the house, with a pot of curry in hand. "Since I was told I hadn't stewed my curry enough the other day, I brought a brand-new batch to share."

"Haibara-san's very important phone strap was taken to Chiyari Station." Mitsuhiko supplied.

"We're on our way to get it right now." Ayumi added.

"Could you drive us there?" Conan requested.

"Unfortunately, I need to use my car after this." Subaru remarked. "Although, I saw a familiar car parked next to this house. Why don't you ask him: a white RX-7."

Outside Professor Agasa's gates...

"I knew it." Ayumi chirped, the kids instantly recognizing the person in the driver's seat. "It's Amuro-san."

"What are you doing here?" Mitsuhiko asked.

"I got sleepy while driving in the area, so I took a nap." Amuro replied. "What are you kids doing?"

"We're going to Chiyari Station to pick up a phone strap our friend dropped." Conan answered. "Could you drive us there?"

"I'd also like you to do this." Subaru spoke up. "Though if there is some reason you don't want to leave this place, then I suppose it can't be helped."

"I wanted to nap a little longer, but that's too bad." Amuro related. "This is a thrillingly good place to nap."

At the Chiyari Station's lost and found...

"That's not it." Ayumi objected, seeing the dangling strap the station master had in his hand.

"That's Sanada." Genta peered at the figurine.

"We lost a Higo strap." Mitsuhiko informed.

"Was this the man who turned it in?" Conan showed the station master Mitsuhiko's video.

"It was a younger man." the station master recalled.

"Maybe," Amuro stepped forward. "This man in the photo appears to be the father of the boy standing next to him. Maybe he mistook the Higo strap your friend dropped for the Sanada strap his son dropped and picked up yours. Unless you're a passionate fan, they probably all look the same."

"In other words, someone picked up the Sanada strap his son dropped and turned it in here." Conan concluded.

"We need to find the father and son recorded in my phone." Mitsuhiko pointed out.

"How are we going to find them?" Ayumi wondered.

"Why don't we think about that once we return to my car?" Amuro suggested.

"Oh right." Genta hurried back to the lost and found. "Was a badge turned in along with the strap?"

"I don't think so." the station master replied.

"I lost my Detective Badge in the train too." Genta explained.

In a Danny's restaurant later...

"Now then, how should we find this man with his son who picked up the Higo strap your friend dropped on the train?" Amuro began. "Both of them look very tan."

"Maybe they're on their way to go swimming at the beach." Mitsuhiko guessed.

"That's not it." Conan refuted. "The video was taken while we were on the train after the soccer game that ended at 3pm. We arrived at Beika Station ten minutes after that. So, if they were going swimming, they would've left earlier."

"Maybe they were on their way back from the beach." Ayumi suggested.

"That's not it, either." Conan shook his head. "We were riding the Shonan Shinjuku train. It departs from Takasaki in Gunma and passes through Shinjuku and Yokohama on its way to Odawara in Kanagawa. The beach doesn't reach Beika Station."

"Maybe they went into an indoor pool." Ayumi proposed.

"Or bug hunting." Genta threw a possibility out.

"Or maybe they just went to an acquaintance's house." Mitsuhiko added.

"In that case, did you overhear any of their conversation?" Amuro asked.

"The dad said to his son, 'It's about as long as it takes to watch Kamen Yaiba.'" Ayumi remembered. "But Kamen Yaiba wasn't on today."

"Before his father said that, did the boy ask him, 'How much longer?'" Conan pressed.

"He did." Ayumi nodded.

"Which means it's possible he was using the thirty-minute Kamen Yaiba program to explain to his son how much longer it would take to reach their destination." Amuro concluded.

"Do you know when they said that?" Conan inquired.

"It was after the train screeched to a stop and everyone fell." Ayumi nodded.

"30 minutes from Beika Station..." Conan pondered. "That's here around Chiyari Station."

"That boy seemed to be a first-year elementary school student like us." Mitsuhiko noted.

"How did you know he was a first-grader?" Conan blinked.

"He breathed on the train window and wrote something with his finger." Mitsuhiko answered. "I think he was writing his own name."

"Do you remember which car you were riding in?" Amuro asked.

"We got in the middle of the third car from the front." Genta recalled.

"I do remember his pale finger pressed against the window, though." Mitsuhiko stated. "If you look closely at the video..." he pointed to the paused video. "It's both of them."

"They're both pale from the wrist down." Genta exclaimed.

"Look that the dad's bag." Ayumi pointed. "It looks like there's something angular inside it."

"Maybe..." Conan pondered. "They could be digging for clams. You can do that all year round. April to May is the best season because the climate means the clams are full of nutrients from spawning. There are plenty of beaches that are open to digging for clams as late as July."

"Low tide at Chiyari Beach is at 5:59 today." Amuro referred to his phone's inbuilt weather app. "When digging for clams, it's best to arrive an hour or two before low tide, so it makes sense that they took that train."
