Chapter 129: The Unsolved Cocktail Case, Part One
Time passes, late one night...
Furuya snuck into the Kudo house using a replicated key he had snitched from Ran earlier. Shutting the door, he sensed a presence behind him and turned, training a shotgun at his opponent.
Akai, too, had his handgun, leveled at Furuya's head.
"You let your guard down, Akai Shuichi." Furuya smirked.
"I could say the same to you, Bourbon." Akai fired back.
Nine hours earlier...
"You were on your way out?" Amuro blinked, having brought in leftover sandwiches to the detective agency. "And I brought sandwiches."
"I'll have them as a late-night snack." Mouri shrugged. "You can leave them here."
"So, are you going out on a case?" Amuro inquired.
"Why do you think that?" Conan asked. "We could be going out to eat together."
"Mouri-sensei said he'd eat the sandwiches as a late-night snack." Amuro explained. "I thought it'd be strange if you were going out to eat."
"You're half-right." Mouri admitted. "Some rich guy is freaking out because he received a threatening letter. I'm on my way with these two to talk over dinner with said rich guy."
"You should come with us to talk about the case." Conan offered. "You're Kogoro-oji-san's apprentice."
"My shift is over for today." Amuro noted.
In the Black Rabbit Restaurant later...
"This isn't a normal restaurant." Ran gaped. "It's a bunny girl club."
"True to its name..." Amuro agreed.
"Unbelievable..." Ran muttered. "I wouldn't have brought Conan-kun if I'd known it was this kind of place."
"I'm fine." Conan beamed. "Look, they've rolled omelets and curry and everything looks good."
"Thank you for waiting." Morooka Gunzo approached the group. "You must be the great detective Mouri Kogoro-san. Nice to meet you. I'm the man who contracted you, Morooka Gunzo."
"So, about this threatening letter..." Mouri went straight to the point.
"I brought it, of course." Morooka nodded. "Fukamachi-kun, the letter." he turned to his butler.
"This is the threatening letter my master received the other day." Fukamachi Atsufumi produced the letter.
"A threatening letter made from clippings in this day and age." Mouri mused, opening the letter. "If you want to live, stay away from the Black Rabbit Restaurant.' Isn't this the Black Rabbit Restaurant?"
"Yes." Morooka replied. "So, I invited a detective to find the scoundrel trying to kill me who is surely in this restaurant."
"But there's no guarantee you'll be attacked in the restaurant." Amuro pointed out.
"I have a few bodyguards with me at all times." Morooka replied. "If I'm going to be attacked, it'll be inside this restaurant."
"Why aren't your bodyguards with you right now?" Ran inquired.
"Obviously," Morooka deathpanned. "If I brought a bunch of stern-looking men in here, I'd ruin the atmosphere of the restaurant."
"Absolutely." Mouri leered.
"Morooka-san." Asakura Yuri ran over. "Welcome. Thanks for coming back.
"Yuri-chan, I'm here for a special reason today." Morooka explained. "Come on, order something."
"Could I get some food, then?" Asakura took a seat beside Morooka. "I missed lunch, so I'm starving. In that case," she looked at the menu Morooka handed to her. "I'd like a fruit plate, rolled omelets, and sandwiches."
"Dinner's on me tonight." Morooka declared. "Girls, you're all welcome to order whatever you like." he informed the order bunny-girl waitresses. "Fukamachi-kun, you too." he turned to his butler. "Let's not stand on ceremony. Have a seat and drink with us."
"I'm not use where to look in this type of establishment." Fukamachi wiped his glasses.
"Thanks for waiting." Asakura brought the plate of rolled omelets.
"These rolled omelets look delicious." Morooka gushed. "Let's eat. Fukamachi-kun, could you pass the sauce? I'll get it." he sighed, reaching over for the soy sauce bottle, remembering Fukamachi had severs myopia. "Glasses?" he gaped, realizing he had accidentally stepped on pair of spectacles on the ground. "Are these yours?"
"I thought I left them on the table." Fukamachi gaped. "I have a spare pair in the car. I'll go get them."
"It's too dangerous to get them without your glasses." Morooka was worried. "I'll get them for you."
"They're in the glove box." Fukamachi informed.
"I'll go with you." Mouri got up from his seat.
"No way." one of the bunny-girls gaped when an alarm started ringing and she reached to her back for her cellphone.
"An earthquake?" Asakura was shocked.
"I'm sorry." Fukamachi stammered, his handphone in hand. "It suddenly started ringing while I was checking my messages."
"Let me see that." Conan snatched the phone over and turned off the alarm.
"Please be careful." Amuro cautioned. "This type of phone sounds an alarm if you press the power and increase volume buttons simultaneously."
"All the bunny-girls keep their phones on the back of their outfits." Conan noticed.
"Customers call us all the time to ask if the restaurant is crowded." Asakura explained. "Sometimes, we call them to invite them to the restaurant." she turned, bumping into Murakami Sana and spilling her red win on her wrist-cuff.
"I'm sorry." Murakami mocked. "There are spare cuffs in the changing room. Why don't you go change yours?"
"Okay." Asakura nodded and set her champagne glass down, using to coaster to cover the top.
"Here, Fukamachi-kun." Morooka handed the spare glasses to Fukamachi. "Where's Yuri-chan?"
"She hurried off to the changing room a moment ago." Fukamachi supplied.
"Almost all the food she ordered is here." Morooka turned to the fruit platter in front of him.
"It's my fruits plate." Asakura gushed, returning to the table. "That looks good."
"Come on." Morooka urged. "Everyone's been waiting for you since you ordered. Now eat."
"Thanks for the food." Asakura stabbed an apple slice and bit into it. "It's so good. My glass is..." she looked around. "This one." she lifted the coaster off the wine flute.
"Seen anyone suspicious?" Morooka turned to Mouri.
"Not in particular." Mouri replied. "What about you, Amuro-kun?"
"I don't detect any murderous intentions." Amuro responded.
Just then, Asakura's glass fell to the ground, the bunny-girl then fell back on the armchair she was sitting on, collapsing on the ground.
"Yuri..." Morooka gaped. "Are you alright, Yuri?"
"Don't touch her." Mouri barked. "Ran, call an ambulance and the police."
"Perhaps she got food poisoning from the fruit she ate." Fukamachi reasoned.
"That's not it." Conan refuted. "Morooka-san had some of that fruit, too. It's hard to believe only Yuri-san got food poisoning. Yuri-san said she was starving since she missed lunch. Food poisoning symptoms manifest 30 minutes after eating food at the earliest."
"Which means she happened to eat some fruit that had been poisoned by someone." Amuro concluded. "Or someone poisoned this glass she was just drinking from."
After Megure's team arrived...
"Arsenic?" Mouri echoed. "You found arsenic in Yuri-san's drink?"
"Yeah." Megure nodded. "Mizuno sent the victim's stomach contents to Tox shortly after she had her stomach pumped."
"How's Yuri-san?" Ran asked.
"According to Mizuno-san, they've finished treating her at the hospital." Takagi replied. "But she hasn't regained consciousness yet."
"So, do you have any idea who might've tried to kill the victim?" Megure inquired.
"It was me." Morooka confessed. "Someone was trying to poison me, but Yuri-chan drank it instead. I'm the one who was being threatened."
"Threatened?" Megure and Takagi echoed.
"I see." Megure looked at the threatening letter. "So, you received this letter.
"But Yuri-chan was poisoned instead of me." Morooka added.
"Your glasses were totally different shapes." Conan pointed out. "Yuri-san's glass was a skinny champagne glass, and yours is a standard highball glass. I don't think they'd mix it up."
"Them, Yuri-san really was the culprit's intended victim." Takagi noted.
"We can't say that for certain." Amuro cut in. "Yuri-san collapsed after returning to the table and drinking from her glass. She covered her glass with a coaster before leaving the table. It could only be poisoned by Morooka-san, who passed by Yuri-san as she held her glass before she left the table. Or Fukamachi-san, who was sitting next to her when she placed her glass on the table when she was startled by the phone alarm. Or Murakami-san, who spilled red wine on her white cuffs and created a reason for her to leave the table. As far as I can recall, only those three could've poisoned Yuri-san's glass."
