Chapter 136: Miss Lonely and the Detective Boys

Time passes...

"Coming your way, Haibara." Genta shouted a warning to a yawning Haibara. "What are you doing?" he chided, the soccer ball flew over Haibara's head.

"Ai-chan, I'll go get it." Ayumi informed. Retrieving the ball, her nose picked up the scent of an incense cone and a lone woman sitting under the pavilion sipping red wine.

"What's the matter?" Mitsuhiko asked, the rest of the Detective Boys running up.

"That woman..." Ayumi started, looking at the engagement ring dangling from Komori Tomoko's neck as she poured out a second glass of wine.

"She seems kind of sad." Mitsuhiko noted.

"Someone's coming." Genta added.

"She's been waiting for him." Mitsuhiko remarked, seeing a man approach the lone woman. "Is she waiting for someone?" he wondered, after Komori sent the man away. "A beautiful woman is drinking alone in a park. There must be some reason for it."

"Let's ask her what she's doing." Genta suggested and ran up to Komori. "What are you doing?" he asked.

"Why are you drinking alone in the park?" Ayumi pressed.

"You saw me." Komori chuckled. "How embarrassing."

"Why do you have two glasses when you're alone in..." Mitsuhiko noticed the second wine glass and stopped himself when Komori started sobbing.

"I'm sobbing." Komori muttered. "The tears came when I remembered... my beloved. He died."

That weekend...

Having met Kajiki Kohei who had brought the lost Ayumi to the lost-and-found station in the botanical gardens, Komori introduced herself to the men's cosmetics company president.

The two hit off it almost immediately and Kajiki made a marriage proposal to Komori during lunch.

Several days later...

"Why are you coming with us, Professor?" Conan asked the accompanying Professor Agasa, the Detective Boys having received an invitation from Komori.

"Since she's looking after you kids, I thought I should thank her." Professor Agasa replied. "This place is huge." he gulped, ringing the doorbell. "Does she live here alone?"

"Before her husband passed away, it was probably the two of them." Conan replied.

"It's Professor Agasa." Ayumi introduced the inventor to Komori who had opened the door.

"I'm something like a guardian to these kids." Professor Agasa explained.

"Please come in." Komori let her guests in.

"Kajiki-san's here too." Conan noticed the shoes in the doorway.

"Kohei-san is waiting inside for all of you." Komori nodded. "I invited you here today because I have something to tell you." she led the group to the balcony upstairs were Kajiki was sleeping off the alcohol.

"Your phone is ringing." Mitsuhiko heard Conan's ringtone.

"It's not mine." Conan replied.

Kajiki was awoken by the relentless phone ring.

"Then, whose phone was it..." Mitsuhiko mused as Komori opened the balcony window, just in time to see Kajiki fell off the veranda.

After Megure's team arrived...

"The deceased is Kajiki Kohei-san, forty-five years old." Takagi read off his notes. "He was the president of a men's cosmetic company."

"What's the cause of death?" Megure asked.

"According to Mizuno-san, a cerebral contusion resulting from a fall." Takagi replied. "He seems to have fallen from there." he looked up at the broken railing.

"Are you the owner of this house?" Megure turned to Komori. "Forgive me, but what was your relationship with Kajiki-san?"

"He and I were in a romantic relationship." Komori answered. "We met and begun dating quite recently. He proposed to me today. He'd ask me before, but I had lost my husband."

"Judging by the situation, foul play seems unlikely." Takagi noted.

"We can't be sure yet." Megure reminded.

"This was an accident." Mitsuhiko insisted. "We saw it happen."

"Look at this." Conan pointed to the phone resting on the ledge after the group returned to crime scene.

"That must be Kohei-san's." Komori supplied.

"What's the victim's phone doing here?" Megure wondered.

"What is this?" Genta spotted Kajiki's contact lens on the floor.

"Looks like a contact lens." Haibara remarked.

"It must've been the victim's." Takagi reasoned. "The body only had one contact in one eye."

"Since we haven't found anything suspicious, it seems likely that his death was accidental." Megure declared.

"What are you doing, Genta-kun?" Mitsuhiko scolded, righting the mineral water bottle Genta had accidentally knocked over.

"I'll get something to wipe it up." Komori returned to the house.

Seeing the water drip from the table to the ground, Conan realized what had happened.

"We'll be leaving now." Megure was ready to wrap the case up.

"Wait one minute." Conan voiced, using Professor Agasa's voice. "This wasn't an accident. Kajiki-san didn't fall by accident. He was made to do so. Look closely at his phone. There isn't a scratch on it even though it was dropped on the ground. Isn't it possible that Kajiki-san's phone was on the ground bear the railing not because he dropped it but because someone put it there? There's only one person who had full access to this house."

"Even if she left the phone by the railing, surely that wasn't enough to make him fall." Takagi reminded.

"That's not the only thing she did." Conan assured. "She used an illusion to make Kajiki-san trip and fall. She made his phone appear to be floating in front of the step. I'll recreate it for you using the spray bottle that was in the hallway." he offered. "Place the phone on the step near the edge." he demonstrated. "Then, use this to wet the floor away from the phone."

"When the drunk victim saw this, even if he thought it seemed strange..." Megure noted.

"He might accept it as the truth without thinking too hard about it." Takagi finished.

"The key to this illusion isn't that the phone appeared to be floating, but that the phone appeared to be in front of the step." Conan continued. "Woken by his phone's ringtone, because of the illusion, Kohei-san thought he could reach his phone before he hit the step. Believing he was safe, he went to pick up his phone without much care. But his phone was actually on top of the step. He misjudged the situation and tripped on the step before he could reach his phone and fell from the terrace. This illusion disappears once the ground dries, so it has the benefit of leaving no trace. The railing was probably rotted beforehand and made to break at the slightest touch."

"Do you have any proof?" Komori asked.

"Of course." Conan responded. "Kajiki-san used foundation to cover his wrinkles. A contact was missing from the body, but there are no signs that he rubbed around his eyes. however, there was something that looked like fingerprints on his upper and lower eyelids. No one would open their eyes just to remove one of their contacts. It's only natural to assume someone opened them for him and removed one. When Genta-kun spilled the water earlier, you changed your mind above removing your handkerchief from your pocket: isn't it because the foundation you wiped with your fingers is still on that handkerchief?"

"Why would she do that?" Megure wondered.

"A large difference in acuity between your two eyes disrupts your depth perception, increasing your risk of falling." Conan explained. "When combined with the illusion, it was extremely likely that Kohei-san would trip over the step."

"It was going so well, too." Komori snarled. "You've ruined my masterful performance."

"So, you were using the kids right from the start." Professor Agasa realized.

"He said in a magazine interview that he liked kids." Komori snorted. "In order to catch a big fish, you need to catch some little ones first."

"Check this out!" Genta ran out of the room where the hidden butsudan shrines were located. "In this room..."

"What's all this?" even Takagi was stunned.

"Surely, not all of them..." Mitsuhiko breathed.

"Looks like Mizuno was right to suspect foul play in the previous four incidents." Megure turned to Komori. "Komori Tomoko-san, you can tell us the rest at the station."
