Chapter 137: The Glamping Mystery

Time passes...

"Wow." Ran gushed, Sonoko having brought her and Conan to a glamping park.

"This is called glamping instead of camping, isn't it?" Conan stated.

"So, you already know about all about it." Sonoko remarked. "Glamping is what you call camping in elegance and comfort. Ran, let's have lots of fun today. I'm glad we only had to bring a change of clothes." she led the way to their reserved campsite.

"With camping, you have to bring a bunch of equipment." Ran pointed out.

"I'm taking the picture." nearby, Tosaki Kyoko readied the camera on countdown timer.

At their designated campsite...

"It's huge." Ran and Sonoko beamed.

"The beds are so fluffy." Sonoko wasted no time in jumping onto the bed.

"Let's eat." the trio chorused, after spending the day outdoors.

"What a luxurious dinner." Ran dipped her barbecued meat slice in a dish of sauce.

"I can't believe this is camping." Sonoko agreed.

Later that night...

The trio's relaxing evening was broken by a horrified scream nearby.

They ran towards the scream and was stunned to see Kyoko standing in front of a dead Tosaki Keidai, dressed in women's clothing, his face painted with marker and a crab leg stuffed in his mouth.

"What is this?" Sonoko muttered. "Is this a joke? He's dressed as a woman, has sloppy scribbles on his face, a crab leg in his mouth and a note in his hand."

"Ran-nee-chan, call an ambulance." Conan instructed. "And the police. He's dead." he felt for a pulse and found none.

"Tosaki-san?" Miura Mika gasped, arriving with Tanabe Hiroshi.

"What on earth happened?" even Tanabe was shocked.

"How did this happen?" Kyoko bent in front of her late husband. "I didn't do this." she whispered.

"There's more." Tanabe pointed out.

"Did you know him?" Sonoko asked.

"I guess so." Tanabe replied.

"He's my husband." Kyoko replied.

"Did you do something to this person?" Conan's suspicion was perked.

"I just scribbled on his face." Tanabe stammered. "But I didn't kill him."

"Tanabe-san, you too?" Kyoko echoed.

"Which means you did something, too?" Miura realized.

"My name is Tosaki Kyoko." Kyoko started, in their tent. "My husband's name is Tosaki Keidai. He's the president of a small company. We came here today with Miura-san to eat the cooking of my husband's friend and cook, Tanabe-san."

"I'm Tanabe Hiroshi." Tanabe introduced himself. "I'm a chef here at the facility. President Tosaki has been a regular here for a long time."

"I'm Miura Mika." Miura stated. "I'm a makeup artist. I worked with Tosaki-san the other day. I did makeup for some promotional photos. He really liked my work, so he invited me here as a reward."

"How did this happen to your husband?" Conan inquired.

"I don't know." Kyoko sighed. "I stepped away from my room and when I returned... I tried to scream, but then I noticed something. At this rate, I thought I might be blamed. So I decided to make it look like someone else was responsible. I moved him to Tanabe-san's room. Since I was there, I stuck a crab leg in his mouth, so it would look like he did it."

"Tanabe-san, what did you do?" Conan continued.

"When I returned to my room, I found Tosaki-san's body." Tanabe recounted. "For some reason, he had a crab leg in his mouth. I thought of calling someone, but then I realized something. At this rate, I might be blamed. So I decided to frame the girl with glasses, who came with Tosaki-san."

"And then?" Conan sighed.

"She said she worked in makeup." Tanabe reminded. "So I took a pen..."

"And drew on his face." Ran concluded.

"Then, you moved Tosaki-san to Miura-san's tent." Conan stated. "What about you, Miura-san?"

"When I returned to my tent, I found Tosaki-san's body with a crab leg in his mouth and scribbles on his face." Miura related. "I thought about screaming, but at this rate, I thought I'd be blamed. I wrote a dying message saying 'My wife did it'. I put the note in his hand and tried to carry him to his tent, but he was too heavy, so I got tired and left him in the open."

"That's enough." Megure cut in, bringing his team in. "I'm Megure from the MPD." he flashed his badge. "You're involved in this case? Why don't you tell us what happened? I get the picture." he noted after taking down the suspects' statements.

"Ma'am, why did you put a crab leg in his mouth?" Takagi asked.

"The truth is my husband is allergic to crab." Kyoko answered. "He once accidentally ate a dish containing crab. He narrowly escaped death. Since then, he didn't even like to look at crab.

"Anaphylactic shock?" Conan realized the cause of death.

"Dozens of people die from anaphylactic shock every year." Ami entered the dining room, with her report in hand. "They can be saved if first aid is administered immediately. But if left untreated, it can be fatal. Inspector, my initial report."

"Thanks." Megure took the file. "Did anyone else know about that?" he asked Kyoko.

"Tanabe-san would have." Kyoko answered.

"I knew." Tanabe admitted. "The campground and Tosaki-san told me not to use crab."

"Why didn't you mention his allergy with you saw the crab?" Takagi inquired.

"Nobody asked me." Tanabe protested. "Did you know? Those two are an awful couple. Publicly, they act like a happily married couple, but behind the scenes, they fight quite a lot. The wife was pretty bad, but the husband was a scoundrel, too. Maybe that young woman was the president's mistress."

"You can't be serious." Miura snapped. "Why would I do that? Tosaki-san just liked my work. That's really what it was."

Outside...

"Good evening, forensics." Conan ducked under the police tape. "Did this person experience anaphylactic shock?"

"From my initial examination, yes." Ami looked up from her diagram. "See the scratches on his neck and the swelling around his mouth? That'll indicate suffocation from anaphylactic shock."

Afterwards...

With the clues in place, Conan tranquilized Sonoko.

"It can't be helped." Megure sighed. "We'll stop for today."

"Wait." Conan stated, using Sonoko's voice. "Inspector Megure, I've solved the mystery. Would you mind if I explained it here? This case was supposed to be a simple murder. However, the irresponsible people here turned it into a bizarre and complicated matter. Everyone avoided suspicion falling onto themselves and framed someone else. The wife, Kyoko-san, put crab in his mouth, the chef Tanabe-san scribbled on his face and Miura-san left a dying message. Furthermore, each one of them abandoned the body in another suspect's room. Detective Takagi, has Coroner Mizuno determined the cause of death?"

"After Mizuno-san reexamined the body after considering their testimony, she determined that he suffocated due to anaphylactic shock caused by some crab he ate." Takagi responded.

"If he experienced anaphylactic shock, then the culprit had to have known about his condition." Conan reminded. As you can see, killing Tosaki-san using his allergy causes Kyoko-san and Tanabe-san to immediately fall under suspicion. The person who was certain they wouldn't be suspected is the culprit. In other words, the person who used Tosaki-san's crab allergy to kill him was you, Miura-san. You must've been shocked when the body you abandoned came back to you, Miura-san."

"I didn't do anything." Miura protested. "Like I said before, I just met Tosaki-san through work the other day."

"Then, let's start examining how you killed him." Conan remarked. "Everyone, how do you feed someone crab with a crab allergy?"

"A person with an allergy would be careful never to eat that ingredient." Takagi realized.

"That's why you mixed it into the cookie dough." Conan revealed. "Inspector Megure, here." he showed the Inspector the photo on Kyoko's phone. "It's a picture taken while they were eating lunch."

"Those are cookies." Takagi instantly spotted the cookies in the photo. "You can see them clearly."

"Miura-san, didn't you bake those cookies yourself?" Conan continued. "Tosaki-san was supposed to die then after eating the cookies. Even if crab is discovered in the cookies, as long you as you claim you didn't know about his allergy, it would be treated as an accident. But things didn't go as planned and he didn't die. Why is that? Ma'am, did you remember something?"

"They were a bit bitter." Kyoko recalled.

"It's not unreasonable." Conan stated. "You needed to use plenty of cacoa to mask the smell and flavor of crab. Tosaki-san probably chose not to eat the cookies after he saw the expression of Kyoko-san, who ate one first. That's why you called Tosaki-san to your own tent and made him eat the cookies. Knowing you'd be suspected and their connection doubted, you abandoned Tosaki-san in his tent. After that, as you all know, the victim's body was passed around."

"Impressive reasoning." Miura stated. "But you fell one step short. There's something crucial lacking from your deduction: physical evidence. Where are these crab cookies? Unfortunately, I ate all the cookies from this afternoon."

"Ran, do you have the cookies?" Conan asked.

"Yeah." Ran opened the plastic container to revealed three leftover biscuits.

"Those are the cookies you offered this afternoon to..." Conan stated.

Miura rushed over to gobble up the evidence. "Now the evidence is... they're not bitter? What is that?" she blinked at the clear plastic Ran had in her hand.

"Cookie fragments found in your room." Conan replied.

"What you ate were the chocolate cookies I happened to bake and bring." Ran added.

"If the investigation continues, I'm sure your relationship with Tosaki-san will be established." Conan continued. "If they examine those pieces of cookies, I'm sure..."

"I lost." Miura snarled. "At first, we were just playing with fire. But at some point, we needed each other. He said he'd leave his wife to be with me. We were happy until that day." she recounted how he had fled after she tried to feed him some crab in a hotpot restaurant. "After that, I apologized and asked to get back together., but Keidai refused. So I asked him to take me glamping with his wife instead. I made a plan." she grinned. "I was going to kill him and ruin you and your company using the crab that tore us apart."

"Miura Mika-san, you can tell us more at the station." Megure took Miura into custody.
