Chapter 141: The Target is the Metropolitan Police Traffic Department, Part One

Time passes...

"You're the mini patrolwoman's henchman." Genta spotted Miike by the roadside, waiting for the traffic lights to turn red.

"It's Naeko-san." Ayumi beamed.

"You're up early." Mitsuhiko noted.

"We're up early because it's our turn to feed the rabbits." Conan supplied.

"Is something happening?" Haibara yawned.

"It's traffic month at the MPD." Miike explained. "We're tightening supervision. The light's still red." she pulled Genta back.

"But there aren't any cars." Genta protested. "Doesn't this sign mean kids can cross?"

"This sign is a warning to drivers to be careful because there's a school, kindergarten, or nursery school nearby." Miike answered. "Most road signs are divided by color and function. Yellow signs like this one are warnings. Red means danger or prohibition. Easy-to-read blue are for directions. Calming green signs that are easy on the eyes are used to guide people to emergency exits. Think of it as a traffic light's red, green and yellow."

"You certainly are a female officer of the traffic department." Mitsuhiko was impressed.

"The shapes have meaning, too." Miike added. "Circles that appear larger than they are for prohibitions or regulations. Triangles or squares with points at the top look unstable to draw your attention, so they are for warnings and regulations. Solid stable-looking squares are for guidance and directions. Make sure you follow traffic rules." she reminded, just as the lights turned red.

At the MPD...

"You go hit on again?" Yumi exclaimed, Sato and Takagi having returned from an overnight stakeout. "During a stakeout?"

"Apparently, the clothes I always borrow from your friend makes me look easy." Sato sighed. "As long as I don't look like a cop, it's okay."

"So, what'd you do to the guy who hit on you?" Yumi asked.

"Naturally, I drove him off by secretly showing my badge." Sato shrugged. "I told him 'Don't you think you're hitting on the wrong woman?'"

"Weren't you on stakeout with Takagi-san at that time?" Miike recalled. "Couldn't you have chased them away by saying he's your boyfriend?"

"You're not wrong." Sato admitted. "I once actually did that to tease Takagi-kun and... he panicked and everyone in the area figured out that we were cops. So, we can't use that strategy."

"Sato-san, what are you doing here?" Takagi approached the three women.

"Inspector Megure is looking for you." Chiba supplied. "He's having you stakeout another location today, so he asked you to check out the location."

"Is the newbie who went out on the stakeout with you feeling better?" Sato asked the younger officer.

"His allergies have gotten worse since then." Chiba moaned. "He's at home asleep today. I can conduct a stakeout on my own."

"If you're short of a man, how about her?" Yumi offered Miike up.

"You wouldn't look good on a stakeout." Chiba chuckled. "You'd just look like a middle schooler being admonished by an officer."

"Chiba-kun..." Miike sobbed, the detective was called off by Takagi and Sato,

"Miwako proudly declares her love, but you're absolutely hopeless." Yumi sighed.

"Feel like singing, Miike?" Yagi Shiori rested a hand on the despondent officer's shoulder. "At karaoke, after work. Toko, will you come with us?"

"You bet I will." Momosaki Toko replied.

Later that night...

"Excuse me." a male voice sounded behind Momosaki as she waited by a traffic light after seeing Yagi and Miike off. "I've been hearing the sound of a small girl crying in the park bathroom for a while. Could you go check it out? I wanted to ask the police, but there isn't a police box in the neighborhood."

"Could you take me to the park?" Momosaki requested. "I don't hear anything." she approached the deserted toilet."

"It's coming from the women's bathroom in the back." the masked male pointed.

"Is someone there?" Momosaki walked towards the toilet.

Suddenly, the masked man grabbed her from behind, covering her mouth with a chloroform-soaked cloth.

"I knew it." Momosaki flipped her assailant over her shoulder and onto the ground. "I'd sensed an odd presence recently. "I'm a cop." she flashed her badge. "Looks like you chose the wrong target for your trap."

The masked man turned, pulling out a taser and electrocuted Momosaki's ankle, knocking her out. Running to the back of the toilet where he had a baseball bat hidden, he retrieved the weapon and bludgeoned Momosaki to death.

The next day...

"MPD to all stations." Yumi and Miike's patrol car radio sounded. "The body of a woman bludgeoned to death was discovered at Beika Higashi Park. All patrols in the neighborhood, please head to the location."

"Let's head there to preserve the crime scene." Yumi instructed.

At the crime scene...

"Sato-san." Takagi voiced, he and Sato were the first officers on scene. "It's no use. We didn't find anything in the area that would help us identify the victim."

"Maybe the suspect took it." Sato suggested.

"Does that mean this was a robbery?" Takagi wondered.

"No." Miike gasped in horror. "Momosaki-san."

"You knew it?" Sato turned to Yumi.

"She's a colleague." Yumi replied.

"I thought I recognized her." Sato noted. "So, she was a cop."

"Momosaki Toko." Yumi stated. "Like us, she worked for the MPD Transportation Department as a sergeant. She was a third dan judoka. How could this happen? Come to think of it, weren't you going to karaoke with Momosaki and Yagi last night?" she turned to the sobbing Miike.

"I got drunk." Miike wiped her tears off. "I only remember Yagi-san, who went with us, walking me home."

"Where was the karaoke box?" Sato asked.

"Karaoke Beika on fourth street." Miike sniffled. "Across from the planetarium that's being remodeled."

"Maybe she was attacked while trying to use the park bathroom." Sato reasoned.

"If the suspect bludgeoned a third dan judoka to death, it's possible they are quite strong as well." Takagi suggested.

"Or they knew she was a cop and planned a countermeasure." Sato added. "This bent 100 yen coin next to the body: what if it wasn't a coincidence and the suspect left it there deliberately?"

"Maybe it was the work of someone who bore some financial resentment." Takagi mused.

"We'll have to canvas the area to gather information." Sato decided. "For now, our only clue is this 100 yen coin."

"No." Conan cut in. "There are other clues, too. Look at her left hand. There's nothing on her pointer finger, but there's a scrape along the first joint of her middle, ring and pinkie fingers. And if you flip it over, there's a scrape along the bottom of her palm, too. There aren't any signs that her body was dragged. Which means her left hand was actually shaped like this," he held out his index finger. "And placed against the ground like this." he rested his finger in the floor. "She probably got these scrapes when someone kicked her it towards her feet."

"So, she was trying to tell us something by pointing somewhere?" Sato realized. "At what, though?"

"Look at the tip of her pointer finger." Conan spoke. "See the little bit of blood on it? Maybe that means she knew the culprit would move her hand, no matter what she pointed at, so she used her own blood to leave a fingerprint. There." he spotted a bloodstain nearby. "There's a stain from where her bloody finger scraped against it. She was actually pointing to that direction."

"A swing set?" Sato blinked in confusion. "What does that mean? Yumi, who else was with the victim at the karaoke box last night?"

"Lieutenant Yagi Shiori also of the Transportation Department was with them." Yumi answered. "Yagi's got the day off. Since it's still early, she's probably at home."

"Someone, go to Lieutenant Yagi's place immediately." Sato instructed.

"That's right." Yagi confirmed, Ami's coroner assistants were bringing Momosaki's body to the autopsy theater. "Last night, Toko, Miike and I went to karaoke. I said I'll walk Miike home since she was drunk and parted ways with Toko in front of the store. I had no idea this would happen afterwards."

"It looked like she was trying to stop by the park bathroom." Sato stated.

"Toko used the bathroom just before we left the karaoke box." Yagi voiced.

"Was there anyone who resented her?" Sato pressed.

"Last night, she said she felt like she was being followed starting around a week ago." Yagi revealed. "That was the only time we discussed it."

"Do you know anything about a swing set?" Sato asked. "She pointed to that swing set just before she died. Do you remember anything?" she spotted Yagi's startled expression.

"I don't know." Yagi replied. "I could be wrong, so I'll call you once I'm sure. I need to tell Toko's friends about what happened." she hurried off.
