Chapter 142: The Target is the Metropolitan Police Traffic Department, Part Two
"Were the victim Sergeant Momosaki and Lieutenant Yagi close?" Sato asked the two policewomen from the Traffic Department.
"Apparently, they were high school classmates." Yumi answered.
"Weren't you, too, Yumi-san?" Miike inquired. "You called them a bunch of times while we were at the karaoke box."
"That's someone different." Yumi replied. "That was their classmate, Yumiko. I think she works as a hostess in Ginza these days."
"So, you really have no idea if anyone resented Sergeant Momosaki?" Sato pressed.
"I can think of too many people who might have resented her, justified or not." Yumi mused. "But three of the traffic violators they fined made a bunch of complaints. It was a week ago. I think all three were at an intersection on Fifth Street in Beika City. Miike and I helped question them."
"I wrote their names down." Miike referred to her notebook. "The first was Aono Kengo-san, who was not only using his phone while driving, but didn't have a driver's license. The second, who was driving a motorcycle against traffic without a helmet on, was Akamine Manji-san. The third was Shiroyama Yuuzou-san, who was driving a vehicle with an expired inspector without a seat belt on. All three seemed to be in a big hurry."
"Since they tried to flee before they were issued tickets, they were forced to arrest them for interference of public duties." Yumi supplied.
"Those three sound suspicious." Sato noted. "According to what we heard earlier, Sergeant Momosaki felt someone had been following her since about a week ago. Sounds like we have to share what we have on those three traffic violators."
Later that night...
"MPD to all stations." the radio in Chiba's car sounded. "A woman bleeding from the head has been discovered in an alleyway off Third Street in Haido City. All officers and patrols in the neighborhood, please head to the location."
"That's nearby, Chiba-kun." Shiratori told Chiba. "Commissioner Kuroda..." he gaped at the Superintendent who had already arrived on scene. "What are you doing here?"
"I happened to be in the area, so I came to the scene." Kuroda replied. "Now, it's clear. One of the officers who arrived knew her. The victim is Lieutenant Yagi Shiori of the MPD Transporation Department. Next to her body is a 100 yen coin stuck inside her phone. Just like the one found next to the body of the officer discovered in the park this morning, it was deliberately bent. 100 yen coins are engraved with the sakura blossom. It goes without saying that the sakura is the emblem of the Japanese police. Without a doubt, this case is a serial murder of female police officers."
"The victim was MPD Transportation Department Lieutenant Yagi Shiori, twenty-eight years old." Megure arrived on scene.
"Judging by the body's condition, it's most likely she died from the fall." Ami reported to Kuroda. "It is quite possible that she was pushed down from the external staircase of this apartment building. Not only that, just like Sergeant Momosaki's body that was found this morning, a bent 100 yen coin was left at the scene."
"Because 100 yen coins are engraved with a sakura blossom, the emblem of the police, it's extremely likely that these crimes were committed by an individual who resents the police." Megure concluded. "Naturally, all female officers like the victims as well as the other officers, should be on their guard. That includes you, too, Mizuno." he reminded the coroner. "Don't overlook any illegal activity when you arrest the suspect. Commissioner Kuroda, we'll see you later at the investigative meeting," he informed his superior.
"What is it, Mizuno?" Kuroda spotted the frowning coroner. "Is something on your mind?"
"It's just..." Ami blinked. "Lieutenant Yagi Shiori's face. We believe the wound on her right temporal region was inflicted when she hit the ground. If that was the case, it should be more natural for the wound to be facing the ground. However, it's currently facing upwards and in the opposite direction."
"And there's this." Sato added. "The victim's hand is reaching towards her phone. It's not standard for her person to use a touchscreen without looking at it. If the victim was trying to place a call, her head would be facing left, towards her phone. However, she's facing right, preventing her from seeing the screen. Like her head wound, it feels unnatural."
"Is it possible it is accidental?" Kuroda wondered. "Sometimes, the shock from a fall can cause a person to face a different direction."
"It's still unclear what she was attempting to do with her phone." Megure added.
"Look closely at this." Sato gestured. "There aren't any large visible wounds on the victim's face. There appears to have some kind of scratch just at the tip of her nose. Similarly, the lipstick around her mouth is smudged, as though it was wiped in one direction. It's as if she forced herself to face right while scraping her face against the ground."
"You're right." Megure noted. "Maybe she followed the direction the suspect fled with her eyes."
"We'll have forensics examined her phone immediately." Kuroda declared. "If she called someone, they might have heard something."
"Inspector, I found something rather peculiar while autopsying Momosaki-san." Ami reported. "I found a burnt mark on her ankle; as if she had been tasered beforehand. And if I'm not wrong, I'll most likely find a similar burn mark somewhere on Yagi-san's body as well."
At the Police headquarters later...
"Is that true, Miwako?" Yumi asked, Sato having informed the two policewomen about the outcome of the investigation meeting.
"We just finished the investigation meeting." Sato nodded. "And just as Mizuno-san predicted, she found a burnt mark on the back of Yagi-san's hand. It's likely the suspect is going after female police officers. You two are both in the Transportation Department, too. Be careful."
"Do they know who the suspect is?" Yumi asked.
"They're calling the three traffic violators they arrested a week ago." Sato replied. "None of them are answering, though."
"Is the only clue that swing set?" Yumi wondered.
"About that, did Lieutenant Yagi have any habits?" Sato inquired. "Like expressing something by turning her head like this."
"I've never heard anything like that." Yumi shrugged.
"I'll send the photo of her to your phone." Sato sent over the photo. "Contact me immediately if you notice anything after seeing the photo. I'm going out canvassing after this, so I'm counting on you."
