Chapter 155: Kyogoku Makoto the Understudy, Part One

Time passes...

"Superhero Team Azengers was as good as they say." Ran gushed, exiting the cinema with Sonoko, Kyogoku, Conan and Sera.

"Although I was a little dumbfounded by Kamen Yaiba's reason for joining them." Sonoko joked.

"After all, it was 'We want to increase our Japanese audience." Sera chuckled.

"It was so blunt, I laughed out loud." Ran admitted.

"If that movie was real, I bet they'll recruit Makoto-san first." Sonoko side-eyed her boyfriend.

Just then, a scream sounded from the other side of the road and the group witnessed a mugging.

Kyogoku sprang into action and took down the helmeted villain with an elbow and knocked the handgun from his hand.

"Cut!" Tomioka Shigematsu hollered. "What do you think you're doing?"

"I'm sorry." Kyogoku apologized to the director. "I thought a woman was in danger."

"It's no use." Hoegi Youta examined the knocked-out actor. "He's unconscious."

"It's your fault for not keeping an eye on the crowd." Odori Daisaku chided.

"Give me a break." Tomioka sighed. "He still has scenes left to shoot. Is there anyone who can take his place?"

"Since the role involves wearing a full-face helmet, anyone can do it." Odori remarked. "We can dub his lines in later. But finding an actor who can do action scenes on such short notice will be difficult."

"Now that I get a better look at you, you're pretty fit." Tomioka instantly noticed Kyogoku. "Was that something special that you did earlier?"

"I know a bit of karate." Kyogoku replied.

At the rehearsal scene in a school...

"Let's do a camera rehearsal." Tomioka yelled. "Ready, action!"

"He's the understudy?" Tokuzono Saiya walked into the scene, seeing Kyogoku fend off his attacking opponents. "He moves pretty well. I wish he'd do my stunts for me. You used to be able to move like that, Nanako."

"You mean when I just started." Jinmei Nanako reminded. "I can't do that anymore. I'd hate to break a nail."

"I guess you're no longer a youngster." Tokuzono teased. "You're a mid-level actress."

"Don't make me sound so old." Jinmei retorted. "I'm still in my 20's."

"He sure is great." Odori marveled at Kyogoku's fighting skills. "He was quick to learn the fight scenes, too."

"To think this happened because he jumped to conclusions." Tomioka remarked. "Have we actually unearthed an unbelievable diamond in the rough?"

"He's just a meathead." Tokuzono scoffed. "An actor's all about the face."

"What?" Jinmei gushed, seeing Kyogoku's uncovered face after he took off the helmet. "He's super handsome."

"Maybe I'll scout him to play a new police detective." Tomioka mused. "It's about time your character died in the line of duty."

"Even we could handle those fight scenes." Sera spoke.

"You girls can do action scenes, too?" Tomioka was surprised. "In that case, maybe I'll have one of you do Jinmei-chan's stunts. Where's Tokuzono-chan?" He looked around for the missing actor as the cast prepared for the next scene. "He's supposed to kick our future star off the building."

"Tokuzono-san was looking for his phone." Aburai Hideka supplied. "He said he couldn't find his main girl's phone."

"He's probably already up there talking to his main girl on the phone." Odori suggested.

"Maybe he's really looking for it." Jinmei pointed out. "He keeps a different phone for each girl but leaves them lying around all the time."

"Come to think of it, he asked me earlier if I'd seen his phone." Hoegi recalled.

"Looks pretty good." Tomioka checked the camera's angle. "It's got intensity."

Just then, a screaming Tokuzono fell off from the building roof.

"Is something wrong?" Kyogoku wondered, looking out of the window.

After Megure's team was called in...

"The deceased is actor Tokuzono Saiya-san, 34 years old.' Takagi reported. "While the staff was down here preparing to film the next scene for their TV drama, Tokuzono-san who has ascended to the fourth floor shouted and fell. He died when he struck the ground."

"And at that time, the only person on the fourth floor with him was you, Kyogoku Makoto-kun." Megure noted.

"Was there really no one else there?" Conan asked.

"Tokuzono-san came in while I was visualizing the action scene by myself." Kyogoku answered.

"Did you notice anything then?" Sera inquired.

"Come to think of it, Tokuzono-san said he was looking for his phone and called it using another one." Kyogoku recalled. "But I think I heard a strange noise other than a ringtone. Then I heard his scream. When I turned around, he was gone."

"Then, someone else must've set something up." Sonoko insisted. "There's no way Makoto-san would have done something like that."

"Do you have any idea what could have made the noise?" Megure asked the production crew.

"All that was in the fourth floor classroom were the safety harness he was going to wear." Tomioka answered.

"We've finished filming the scenes inside the classroom." Hoegi supplied. "All we had left to film was the culprit falling from the fourth floor shot from inside the school yard. Once the actor playing the culprit reached the fourth floor and the camera position was set, I was supposed to head up there, too. But then, Tokuzono-san..."

"Is it possible it was an accident?" Takagi guessed. "Could Tokuzono-san have accidentally fallen while playing around with his harness?"

"He was looking for a phone that was important to him.' Jinmei stated. "I doubt that's what happened. Although it's true that he frequently pulled childish pranks."

"He pranked us with some bleeding soap once." Tomioka revealed. "That was intense. The AD who fell for it screamed like he was dying. It made everyone in the studio gather in the bathroom. That AD went on to actually die late."

"He got into a car accident on his way to a filming location." Jinmei explained.

"Weren't there any staff who resent Tokuzono-san for his pranks?" Megure inquired.

"Some ADs even quit over it." Hoegi answered.

"And actors who quit after getting into an argument about it." Aburai added.

"In any case, let's head to the fourth-floor classroom." Megure suggested. "Kyogoku-kun, director and AD, come with us."

In the classroom...

"After a fight, the culprit is kicked out of the window in this scene." Tomioka related.

"This is the safety harness you mentioned." Megure spotted the attachment on the table. "Could you call the last number the victim called using his phone?" he made a call. "It's over there?" He looked out to the windowsill and found the ringing phone.

"That's odd." Conan noted, Sera having deposited him by the phone. "Nobody would forget their phone here."

"Isn't it possible that something made him drop it there after he found it?" Sera wondered, Conan retrieving the phone.

"But there isn't a scratch on the phone." Conan pointed out.

"In other words, it wasn't dropped or thrown." Sera mused. "It was carefully placed there by someone other than Tokuzono-san."

"Because of us, we now know that someone may have used this phone to do something." Conan handed the phone to Megure.

"We don't know what their intention was or who left this phone here." Megure bagged the phone.

"After Tokuzono-san entered the classroom and said he'll call his phone, I heard the ringtone immediately." Kyogoku stated. "I believe it came from the window."

"Did anyone else enter the classroom?" Megure turned to Tomioka.

"Everyone did." Tomioka replied. "We filmed the fight scene in the classroom first. All the staff, camera, lights and make-up were all in this room."

"After that, we left to film the falling scene from outside." Odori added. "With all the equipment being moved, things were busy."

"We were up here watching them work, so nobody was keeping an eye on the windows from the outside." Sera revealed.

"Sounds like we should ask who was the last to leave the classroom." Megure noted.

On the ground...

"From down here, the fourth floor is a blind spot." Takagi remarked.

"In other words, it would've been possible for someone to return to the fourth floor during the 30-minute lunch break and lay a trap." Megure concluded.

"Come to think of it, Jinmei-chan, you were oddly short of breath earlier." Odori pointed out.

"That's because I have an action scene." Jinmei argued.

"But you had a 30-minute break after filming ended." Odori reminded. "Though it would make sense if you ran up to the fourth floor at the time."

"I haven't done an action scene in a while, and I'm out of shape." Jinmei retorted. "I run of breath easily these days."

"In any case, someone placed the phone outside the window during the break between the time the filming ended and when Tokuzono-san and Kyogoku-san returned to the fourth floor." Takagi cut in. "It's possible they were lurking nearby in order to retrieve whatever trap they set. Is there anyone who was missing during that time?"

"We were about to start filming." Tomioka shrugged. "We would've noticed if someone disappeared. Would you like to check the camera's footage?"
