Chapter 156: Kyogoku Makoto the Understudy, Part Two
"Even if the culprit placed Tokuzono-san's phone outside the window, how did they get him to fall?" Megure wondered.
"If Tokuzono-san was afraid of heights, he wouldn't have gone outside the window." Takagi agreed.
"He wasn't afraid of heights." Jinmei supplied. "If anything, he loved high places. He wouldn't have had any trouble retrieving his phone from that kind of place."
"We know they plotted to make Tokuzono-san fell by placing his phone outside the window." Takagi pondered. "But that won't guarantee that he'd fall. We're missing something essential."
"Wait." Megure frowned. "When Tokuzono-san fell, the rest of the staff were down here directly below the window. It's possible that they waited for Tokuzono-san to reach for his phone and called him then. If they could choose different ringtones according to the caller, they could have set it to some kind of loud noise so that Tokuzono-san would be startled, lose his balance and fall."
"Kyogoku-kun did mention hearing a strange noise just before Tokuzono-san fell." Takagi recalled. "IN that case, we may be able to identify the culprit if we look through that phone's call history."
"Kyogoku-kun." Megure called out. "You said you heard a strange noise just before Tokuzono-san fell. It was a noisy ringtone, right?"
"If anything, it was like a flutter or buzz of a bird or insect flapping its wings." Kyogoku replied. "It was quiet."
"Come to think of it, Tokuzono-chan hated bugs." Tomioka supplied.
"He was unusually terrified of them." Odori confirmed. "If a single bug flew his way while we were filming, he'd lose his mind."
After Hoegi went to the nearby convenience store to buy drinks for everyone, Odori took a sip of his peach melon shake before dropping the plastic cup and collapsing on the ground.
"Odori-san?" Aburai ran over. "Is this a joke?"
"Move." Sera pushed the makeup artist aside.
"Masumi-san, do you mind letting me do my job?" Ami smiled sweetly at the high school girl detective.
"Yes, madam!" Sera moved aside.
"Cyanide." Ami concluded, immediately smelling the almond-like scent from Odori's mouth. "And Tomioka-san, don't touch that." she warned, seeing Tomioka was about to pick up the fallen cup. "He's poisoned." she informed her superior.
"We currently believe the poison to be a type of cyanide compound." Takagi reported, forensics having bagged Odori's body to transfer to the autopsy theater. "Do you ever use that type of chemical while filming?"
"Not on location." Tomioka replied. "If anything, I think we might use it in the prop studio."
"Which means any of your staff could have gotten their hands on a poison." Megure noted.
"Is this everything Odori-san had on him?" Conan looked over the forensics officer's shoulder to see Odori's aftereffects spread on the floor. "What's that?" he noticed a dragonfly-like toy amongst the items. "That thing that looks like a butterfly."
"It was wrapped in a handkerchief and carefully tucked away inside his pants pocket." the forensics officer replied.
"I see you've found a fun toy." Tomioka remarked. "I've seen them somewhere. I don't know Odori-kun had one, though. You turn the wings on top." he explained as the forensic officer wound up the toy. "Once the rubber band is sufficiently wound, you stick it inside a notebook or something. Jinmei-chan." he called, closing his notebook. "Try opening this notebook."
"That thing you stuck in there will come flying out." Jinmei huffed and opened the notebook, setting the toy free.
"That's the sound." Kyogoku instantly recognized the sound he heard. "That's the flapping noise I heard just before Tokuzono-san fell. The sound of that toy just made is the same I heard then."
"That was set somewhere on the fourth floor." Megure concluded, snatching the toy from the forensics officer.
"According to the staff, these practical joke devices were a favorite of..." Takagi blinked.
"Tokuzono-san." Aburai confirmed.
"Then, it's possible Tokuzono-san himself was trying to set this device and slipped." Megure remarked.
"That doesn't make sense." Conan refuted. "Doesn't Tokuzono-san hate bugs? He wouldn't use a toy bug as a prank."
"And if it made a noise, that means the rubber band powering the toy was wound up." Sera added. "Once the rubber band is wound, something needs to hold it down until it's ready to fly. It would need to be stuck between the pages of a notebook or have something set on top of it."
"Inspector," Takagi reported. "There was no poison found in the shake, cup or straw Odori-san was using."
