Chapter 5: The Sea, The Stars and You
Castle Hall
"Have we come to the end?" Whistler sadly asked as he stroked the wooden walls of the Detragan. He gazed at the framed photo of his daughter positioned just above the keyboard.
Descole turned to him with an impatient hum, "Everything is going according to plan as I told you it would do," he told him in an annoyed tone.
Whistler looked at him sharply, "You kidnapped people. You sold all those tickets. That's no plan," he accused the scientist.
Descole chuckled as he looked away, "That was my plan," he told him.
The two men were in a large grey walled hall. It was probably the only place in the caste that wasn't elaborately decorated with the most interesting feature being the red carpet that led to a dais platform. The Detragan was positioned on the dais at the far end of the hall and spouted large wires and pipes which connected to the walls.
To the left of the Detragan was a smaller machine which looked like a power source. Descole stood before it with a smirk on his face as two wolves laid at his feet. To the right of the Detragan was another smaller machine attached to the Detragan by large wires. It had a few switches, a helmet and a computer screen that glowed a dim green light. This machine was further connected to a leather backed operating chair, the sort of which you find in a dentist.
Amelia was led into the hall by a group of masked men. She briefly marvelled at the musical instrument that towered over her before her eyes widening in surprise at seeing Whistler.
"Mr. Whistler," she uttered in shock, "Edgar was right. This has been a trap for me all along."
"Come come, Amelia," Whistler nervously reassured as he approached her, "everything's OK."
"Where are the others?" she demanded as try to back away, but the masked men pushed her forwards "What are you going to do to me?"
"Nothing my dear. You are the winner. You will receive eternal life!" Whistler insisted as she was pushed onto the dias.
"What is this?" Amelia asked as she looked up at the modified instrument in front of her.
"The Detragan. "We brought it from the ship," Decole answered simply.
Whistler turned to her with a desperate smile, "This beautiful instrument does not just play music, Amelia. It will also give the gift you crave of eternal life."
"And it was me who created it," Descole finished as he took out a key from his black cape and inserted into the power machine.
Once he turned the key, the machine hummed to life menacingly. He flipped a few switches and the Detragan began to move as if it was being played.
Whistler smiled in relief before he noticed that the penultimate light above the keyboard of the Detragan was starting to flicker. He gasped when the light began to die down and extinguish.
Whistler grabbed hold of Amelia's shoulders and push her towards the chair, "Quickly, Amelia. This way."
"Wait!" she cried as she was unceremoniously into the chair, "But I don't want eternal life. I want to give it to my grandad. He only has a month to live," she explained as she tried to fight her were out, but the masked men held her down tightly, "He should be here," she insisted as Whistler took a helmet from the stand.
The helmet had two round meters and two metal prongs that were attached to the machine via wires. Whistler placed the helmet over Amelia's head and gave a sad look.
"He has to drink the elixir of life," Amelia said as she gave Whistler a pleading look.
"There is no elixir," Whistler said as the helmet started to hum to life.
"Leave me alone!" Amelia screamed, "Let me go! Let me go!"
Whislter ignored her pleas as he made his way to a large switch on the machine, ready to activate the process.
"Please don't!" Amelia screamed, as Whistler began to pull the lever down.
"Enough!"
Whistler jumped back from the lever in surprise as a new voice echoed through the room. Everybody turned towards the entrance in shock to see that Layton and the others arrived.
Taking advantage of the confusion, Emmy, and Edgar (who had put Nina down) ran towards where the masked men were holding Amelia. Emmy aimed a punch to the side of one of the masked men's head while Edgar kicked the back of another masked man's knee. As Emmy was dealing with the rest of the masked men, Edgar helped Amelia to her feet and took the helmet off her.
"Are you alright?" Edgar asked in concern.
Amelia nodded, "I'm fine, thank you," she told him as she clutched tightly to his arm.
"Mr. Whistler, I have deduced, you never intended to give eternal life to the winner," Layton declared as he stepped into the hall, followed by Grosky, Janice and Nina, "On the contrary, you were intending to steal their life. Take it away from them."
"That is just not true," Whistler denied as he straightened his glasses.
"Really, you still denying it," Edgar muttered with a roll of his eyes.
"I've finally discovered the truth," Layton continued, "The awful truth behind this game."
Edgar leaned towards Amelia, "This is my favourite part," he whispered, earning a confused look from the blond girl.
"One year ago, when Melina was dying, or rather, because she was dying, you put a vast sum of money to building this Detragan," Layton said, "and assisting you was the scientist, Jean Descole. But the Detragan is no ordinary instrument. It is a machine that can copy a person's personality, their memory all into another person's brain."
"What?" Emmy gasped as she stared up at the instrument
"A copy? Is that possible?" Grosky asked, equally as shocked.
'Seems like a bit of a stretch,' Edgar thought, 'but if a prehistoric dinosaur can slip through the canals of Misthallery, then I don't why not you can't copy another person's brain.'
"Unfortunately, the results weren't perfect," Layton continued as he turned to Nina, "The person's real personality, their memories would force the copy back out of their mind. Nina here showed me that," Layton kneeled down in front of the young girl, "Tell me again that person who you were talking to before?" Layton asked her.
"It was Melina," Nina answered brightly, making everybody except for Layton and Edgar to gasp in shock.
Layton nodded at Edgar to say that he can take over for a bit.
"Since Nina's memories were coming back," Edgar said, picking up where Layton left off, "you need a new host for Melina, otherwise she would be lost forever. So, instead of what any normal person would do, like getting psychiatric help, you decided to invite to young girls to become the new host. It can't be any girl, of course, but one gifted and talented enough to accept Melina's memories like Amelia. The rest…" he rolled his eyes, "was just showmanship," he glared at Descole with a raised eyebrow, "Really? Solve the puzzle or die," he sighed.
Descole chuckled, "It was just a bit of fun," he said with a lazy shrug.
Edgar turned away. He had to admit it was actually fun, but there was no way he was giving Descole the satisfactory.
"All of this was a desperate attempt to hold onto your daughter's memories," Edgar said as he glared at Whistler, "a very stupid thing to do."
"I did what I needed to do," Whistler insisted as he angrily looked at Edgar, "Without Milina, I have nothing."
"I used to think that as well," Edgar muttered as his thought of Agatha.
Descole's dark chuckle made everybody turn to him, "Very impressive. When did you realise, I was involved?"
Layton straightened his hat before addressing Descole, "I suspected it for a while and my suspicion were confirmed when I saw this gloomy castle. Then I knew it must be you orchestrating this plot, Descole."
Descole only chuckled in reply. It would seem that he enjoyed Layton's deduction then the actual game he planned.
Edgar was about to say something else when he felt his hat swiped off his head. He grunted in pain as something heavier dropped over his head and held firmly in place.
"This one will have to do!" Whistler proclaimed as held the helmet down, while Edgar tried to get it off him.
"Edgar, no!" Emmy cried as she ran over to him.
"I can't let her memories fade!" he desperately shouted as he reached for the lever and began to pull it down.
'Dammit,' Edgar thought in a panic, 'he's going to make me a host and all of Milena's memories would…flood into my head. Including the private ones," he rethought what was happening, 'actually, I don't mind,' he thought perversely.
Whistler pulled down the lever and everybody waited for something to happen.
But nothing did.
There were no sounds or any indication that machine had worked. Even the Detragan stood eerily still.
Confused, Whistler and Descole turned to the machine, trying to find what went wrong. Descole spotted the problem immediately.
The key that activated the power source.
It was gone.
"Who took the key? Who took it?" Whistler demanded frantically.
Grosky and Emmy looked at Edgar questioningly.
"Sure, blame the thief for stealing," Edgar deadpanned, feeling slightly offended by their accusatory looks, "you think I teleported to the other side of the room or something."
"You probably would have found a way," Emmy remarked with a shrug.
Edgar nodded in agreement, "You've got me there. I am miraculous after all," Edgar said, making Emmy roll her eyes, "but this wasn't me."
"Layton, was it you?" Whistler accused as he ran up to him and shook his shoulders, "Give it back! The Detragan can't hold her memories much longer. She will disappear forever!" he desperately said as he pointed to the last lit light.
"Please, calm yourself," Layton told Whistler firmly, "I know who has the key," he said earning a gasp from Whistler.
Layton took Whistler's hands of his shoulders and walked to the centre of the room, holding his chin in thought.
"That person holds the key to the Detragan and to explain all the mysteries in this case," Layton continued.
"And know everything that you have done," Edgar piped up after retrieving his hat and walking towards Layton.
"Who is it?" Whistler demanded in frustration.
"Come on, you could have at least have a guess," Edgar told him.
"They hid themselves carefully, to save you from your mistakes," Layton followed up.
Layton and Edgar stood back to back and looked at each person in the room.
Descole.
Grosky.
Nina.
Janice.
Emmy.
Amelia.
Whistler.
With their accusations agreed upon, Edgar and Layton raised the hands.
"It is you," they accused as they pointed at the only person who knew what was going on and wanted to stop it.
And that person was…
….
….
….
….
…Janice.
Everybody turned to her in shock and saw the key hidden in her left hand. She must have snuck around while everybody was busy listening to Layton's and Edgar's analysis.
Edgar looked at her with a blank look, obviously upset that he had to accuse her. Janice couldn't bare to meet his gaze. She had lied to him for all this time and was too afraid to see his reaction.
"I think it is time to tell us everything, Janice," Layton said as both he and Edgar lowered their arms.
Edgar sighed sadly, "Or would you prefer us to call you…Milena," he said, earning a gasp from her.
She looked up at him in shock, "Y-you knew," she stammered. She expected Layton to know, but she didn't know Edgar knew as well.
Edgar smiled comfortingly and shrugged, "Not exactly, but I knew something was odd when we stood on the street where the Prof lived and didn't mention it. Despite, how many times he said you visited. Then when your letter arrived, I noticed how your handwriting differed to your autograph on the record and knew something was really wrong…the rest was worked out a few minutes ago."
Janice-or rather-Milena nodded in understanding, "I'm sorry, Edgar. I didn't want to lie to you," she sadly told him as she bowed her head once more.
"Well, maybe you could use this opportunity to redeem yourself," Edgar told her reassuringly, "Please tell us."
Melina looked up at his smiling face and his kind expression. She sighed and straightened herself proudly.
"You are right. I am Melina," she said causing Whistler to gasp and fall to his knees in shock, "You thought putting my memories into Janice had failed but it hadn't.
-Flashback One Year Ago-
Whistler stomped away in frustration at another seemingly failed attempt to transfer his daughter's mind to Janice's. He left Janice unconscious wearing the helmet in the surgical seat in his grief.
Unaware to Whistler, the screen that showed the transfer progress, which had previously said 'failed', changed to 'complete'
"Janice allowed me to stay here to my very great surprise."
Milena eventually woke up and inspected the new body she was in. She flexed her fingers and touched her face, not believing she was alive.
For the rest of the year, Milena in Janice's body travelled and explored. Experiencing the beauty of life in all its splendour and eventually meeting Edgar in the park.
-Flashback End –
"She buried her personality voluntarily, so that I could act in her place. I had been ill for so long... now, I could walk and dance and sing and…" she briefly glanced at Edgar with a small blush.
"Then, I didn't need anyone else," Whistler whispered in despair. He thought of all the girls he had made take the procedure, only to now know that it was a success.
Descole clapped joyfully, "Congratulations, Whistler. We've accomplished our objective," he said with a victorious grin.
"Shut it, Descole," Edgar growled, earning a mocking chuckle from the scientist.
"As the time went by," Milena continued, "I came to realise how wrong this is. I can't steal another's life so I could live my own."
As Edgar watched her, he pictured the real Milena saying those words in the place Janice stood. He saw her long brownish blond hair, her sickly pale skin, and her sad eyes that held regret and grief. It was only for a couple of seconds and then Janice had returned. He didn't know why he pictured the real Milena at that moment, but he liked to think that Milena truly meant what she said.
"So, you sent me that letter?" Layton questioned as Emmy and Amelia approached.
"Yes," Milena answered sadly, "Janice told me you were the right man, Professor. You were the only hope of stopping my father. No. I can't take other people's lives. But I knew while father had that machine, that he would never let me go."
"Melina..." Whistler stammered as he tried to find the words to explain himself. However, he found that he couldn't and soon gave up.
Melina sadly turned to Edgar, "I'm sorry, Edgar. I feel like I've used Janice to…get closer to you. You must think I'm awfu-"
Edgar took Janice's hands comfortingly making her gasp in surprise. She looked up and saw his warm smile beaming at her.
"It's fine," he told her, "well…I mean it's a bit…it's very weird, but I'm over it," he insisted, "besides, you may have been using Janice's body for everything we've done together, but I like to think that I did those things with Melina. Like how we spent the whole day in the park..."
He remembered that day, but instead of Janice he pictured Melina. He could see the sun danse in her blond hair, hear her bright, joyful laughter and feel her warm hand in his.
"…how we met again atter the play…"
He pictured Melina walking down the stairs towards him and Layton and remembered her happy surprise of seeing him again.
"…how we sat together on the beach…"
He pictured him talking to Melina on the rock they shared.
"…how we travelled to the castle…"
He pictured him and Melina riding the Grasshopper, holding each other in a tight embrace.
"…I did all of those things with Melina. I'm sure Janice will understand…hopefully."
Melina smiled sheepishly as her cheeks turned red slightly.
"She actually encouraged me," she admitted shyly, earning a chuckle from Edgar.
"Well, no matter in what shape or form," Edgar said, "I'm so glad to have met you, Melina, and I'll treasure those moments we shared forever," he told her.
Melina smiled happily. She was so glad that he didn't hate her for what she did.
"I will to," Melina whispered.
Nearby, Emmy and Amelia were looking at the scene. Emmy seemed upset about what was happening while Amelia had a bemused expression, not quite sure how to feel about the situation.
"Are we going to do something?" Amelia whispered to Emmy.
Emmy sighed, "Let them have this moment. They…deserve it," she whispered back.
"Melina," Whistler finally said, making her and Edgar step away from each other, "all I did... It was all for you!" he told her as he stood up and walked to her.
Melina held her father's hand warmly, "Thank you, father. Thank you for your love," she told him gratefully before she frowned sadly at him, "but these. This all has to stop."
"How could I possibly keep on living without you here with me? Tell me," he said as he shook his head in dismay.
That's when thing took a turn for the worst.
The room shook violently causing everybody to almost lose their balance. It felt like a sudden earthquake had struck the island. Edgar glanced upwards and gasped in shock.
"Prof! The roof!" Edgar shouted as everybody turned to ceiling.
The grey ceiling split in half and mechanically moved away from each other, revealing another chamber similar to the inside of a tower or chimney.
Edgar saw a swish of a cape in the corner of his eye and snapped his head around. Everybody was so distracted that they didn't see Descole grab and drag Melina towards the Detragan.
"What the-" Whistler cried as she Descole steal his daughter.
"Melina!" Edgar shouted and began to run after him. He stopped short when a wolf came out of nowhere and growled menacingly at him.
More wolves poured into the room, growling, and snapping their jaws at the others, surrounding them while Descole grinned down at them. Melina got out of Descole's grasp, but another wolf appeared making sure she stayed on the dais.
Edgar placed himself in front of Nina protectively and glared at the scientist.
"You couldn't at least let us have five minutes, you bast-" Edgar glanced at Nina, "-evil man."
"What are you doing, Descole?" Layton demanded.
"l'm afraid I need this young lady's voice if I am to accomplish my real goal here," he told them calmly.
"What are you planning?" Emmy asked, keeping her eyes on the wolves.
Decole grinned and pointed upwards, "To bring Ambrosia back to life!" he proclaimed.
Everybody stared up and gasped in shock. What the mechanical ceiling was hiding was another ceiling much higher up the tower. However, this one wasn't blank.
Etched in a white, was the seal of Ambrosia. It was much clear and larger than the one they found on the epitaph on the beach.
"Wait, Ambrosia is actually real?" Edgar questioned, "I thought it's something you made up to hype up the gift of eternal life."
Descole laughed, "You really thought I was dramatic enough to make the legend of Ambrosia up," he mocked.
"I mean this is coming from the same person who threw a hissy fit because they couldn't find a garden," Edgar muttered.
Descole ignored him, "The legend of Ambrosians fades but it was I who discovered the complete seal," he explained, "Layton, do you know what the lines around that symbol mean?" he asked referring to the star symbols around the upper part of the seal.
Layton and Edgar looked. The starry part of the seal consisted of layered arcs forming something similar to a rainbow. The markings symbolising the stars dotted on each line arc at random, giving the illusion of a night sky.
'Wait, is it random?" Edgar thought.
If he straightened the arcs out in lines and kept the stars as they were, it would look like…
"Their music," Layton and Edgar chorused.
Each star represented a musical note, and each line was the key it was in. It was hidden in the seal all along.
"That is correct. Ambrosian music," Descole confirmed as he turned and walked to the Detragan, "That seal is the first key to unlocking Ambrosia," he flipped open a music notebook that was sitting on the Detragan's stand.
Edgar could see a rough copy of the Ambrosian seal in the notebook, followed by several musical notes.
"It is a Song of the Stars," Descole continued, "The second key is you, Melina."
Melina turned to him in confusion, "What? How can I be a key?"
Descole turned away from the Detragan and smiled eerily, "The Ambrosian seal hides not one key but two of them. Two songs that resonate in perfect harmony. A Song of the Stars and the Sea."
"A Song of the Sea..." Edgar muttered, 'that was the tune Nina was humming this morning.'
"When two songs are played together here, Ambrosia will rise once more," Descole finished.
"How could I not see it?" Whistler murmured angrily, "All he ever wanted was the Ambrosia kingdom."
"Well first of all," Edgar said, "you couldn't see it because that's an insane assumption with all things considered," he told Whistler before he turned to Descole, "secondly, what does Melina have to do with all of this?"
Descole grinned viciously at Edgar, "Just as I cracked the code, the one person, who knew the Song of the Sea, the other key I needed, could no longer sing it. But her memories remained," he explained.
'Melina,' Edgar thought, 'Melina must have known the song before she died,' he deducted, 'that's why Nina knew the song. It must have imprinted in her mind when they attempted to transfer Melina's memories.'
"All I needed was someone to bring those memories alive," Descole declared as he pulled a lever on the Detragan down.
Suddenly the wall behind the Detragan cracked and crumbled away, spewing dust and debris into everybody's eyes. Once they recovered, they saw, much to their horror, that the dais that Descole, Melina and the Detragan was on a platform carried by a crane-like arm that raised them out of the massive hole in the wall and into the cold night.
Edgar was first to react. He tried to jump onto the platform before it could get any further, but a wolf tackled him to the ground.
"Edgar!" Layton called out as he and Emmy tried to help him, but the wolves got in front of them and blocked their passage.
As Edgar laid on the ground with the wolf's teeth poised threateningly at the back of his neck, he glared up at the platform that carried Melina away.
The platform carried them higher and higher into the air, making Melina feel a little dizzy. She saw how Edgar was tackled by one of the wolves and turned to Descole pleadingly.
"Stop it!" she demanded, but the only response she received was a cold smirk.
"You must sing if you want to save them, Melina," Descole told her.
Eventually, the mechanical crane had reached its full height, raising the platform just over the castle. Melina could see the entire island at the height if she wanted to, but she was more worried about the others to sightsee.
"This is your farewell performance," Descole said as he turned to the Detragan keyboard.
The Destragan hummed and moved as Descole played a simple tune. Edgar and the others could hear him play the Song of the Stars from down below. It was slow and pretty, but it needed something else to compliment the tune.
"Sing Melina," Decole demanded, "sing a Song of the Sea."
Melina looked down at the castle, unsure what to do. She saw Edgar stilled pinned under the wolf and the rest of the wolves circling the others threateningly.
She had no choice.
Taking a deep breath, she made her way to the centre of the platform and began to sing the Song of the Sea.
As Edgar remembered, Melina's voice was beautiful and sweet and almost brought a tear to his eye. It improved the tune played by Descole immensely. Melina's voice and the Detragan's music seemed to dance into the night and flow over the island. While the Song of the Stars and the Song of the Sea played together, the island shook violently as if there was another earthquake. The waters around the castle lapped onto the shore, the trees trembled and the white pillars in the ocean hummed.
The wolves were distracted so Emmy took the opportunity to strike. She aimed a karate chop at the metal casing on the wolf's ear which fell to pieces. No longer being controlled by Descole, the wolf yelped in fright and scampered off.
Another wolf attempted to jump her, but she grabbed it's legs and the it into the wolf pinning Edgar. Now that he was free, Edgar stood up and kicked another wolf that tried to leap at him.
"Are you all right?" Emmy asked him as she punched a wolf.
Edgar turned to her with a grin, "Are you kidding me? I just kicked a wolf. It's probably the coolest thing I've done so far in my life," he joked.
Emmy rolled her eyes at his response, but hid a small smile.
Both Descole and Melina has finished their songs. Descole walked to edge of the platform and stared at the island before him with his arms raised.
"Ambrosia will rise again!" he cried as the shaking continued.
Edgar heard something snap beneath his feet and looked down. The shaking had caused the floor that Edgar stood on to crack and start to crumble away.
"Run everyone. Run!" Layton shouted as he pointed to the entrance.
On instant, Edgar picked up Nina and started to run followed by the others before the floor gave way beneath them. The entire floor of the hall collapsed, opening a gaping hole in the castle and leaving the ceiling hanging above them.
Edgar turned to Nina in his arms, "Are you alright?" he softly asked her.
Nina nodded to show that she was unharmed, "It's stopped," she told him.
Edgar frowned in confusion, "What's stopped?"
"The shaking," she answered simply.
"The sha-" he began to say before he noticed something.
He looked out at the island revealed to them and saw no change to the scenery nor any evidence of anything having.
"Prof," Edgar said.
"I know," Layton said with a frown, "the music didn't work."
Descole scowled in frustration as he looked out on the island. Nothing happened once the songs had ended. Not a single thing. The island stood eerily still as the shaking stopped.
Descole growled and turned back to the Detragan.
"Why? Why won't it rise?," he snarled before he pointed angrily at Melina, "Again. Sing it. Sing!" he demanded.
Melina frowned, but reluctantly complied. Descole began to play the Song of the Stars once more and soon Melina joined in with the Song of the Sea.
The others frowned in confusion as the listened to the songs once more. It was obvious that things were not going according to plan.
Now that Edgar no longer had a wolf on his back (A.N: a sentence I never though I would write), he could hear the song much clearer. He noticed something strange.
"Prof," Edgar said, "is it me or does the song seem...incomplete."
Layton nodded, "I know what you mean, Edgar," he agreed.
The both looked up at the ceiling where the seal was still displayed. However, now the seal looked upside down to them, revealing something else's they hadn't
spotted before.
"Of course!" Edgar and Layton chorused.
Descole and Melina finished their songs for the second time and was met with no success again. Furious, Descole slammed his hands on the keyboard making the Detragan play a horrible sound.
"Why... Why?" he growled, using the keyboard as a support.
Melina looked on in worry. A small part of her hoped that this will be end of it; that he will give up on his goal and let her go.
She then heard a dark chuckled from Descole and her hopes were crushed. His laughter grew and grew and became madder and madder.
"Well... If the door to Ambrosia will not open by this music," Descole proclaimed insanely, I will tear it down!"
He slammed his hands down on the keyboard once more and two secret compartments slid out of the Detragan, revealing to be control panels. Descole began punching keys, flicking switches and pulling levers frantically, making the whole castle shake once more.
The brick foundations of the castle cracked and crumbled away revealing mechanical spider-like legs. The legs lifted the main body of the castle, snapping wires and sending bricks and mortar raining down.
Layton lead the group out of the main castle towards the elevated courtyard. They looked up in terror as giant rectangular metal body rose from the wreckage that they had been in.
"What is that thing?" Amelia gasped in horror as she ran behind Edgar.
"Another of Descole's toy robots," Edgar replied as he carried Nina making sure his head covered hers to avoid any stray pieces of debris.
"What is he trying to do?" Grosky questioned in confusion as he ran beside Layton and Whistler.
Emmy and Edgar shared a look before sighing, "Throwing a hissy fit," the replied together.
By the time they reached the sand covered island that once held the castle, the giant robot reached its full height. It was certainly more terrifying then the last one. It was as wide and tall as the castle itself, it had four thin legs that held up rectangular body. The front of the body was made of two rows of white metal planks that ran vertically across the body and it had two bright lights on top of the body. The planks and the lights made the robot look like it had a horrible face with the planks being the teeth and the lights that eyes. On either side of the body were two arms. The right arm held a gigantic metal claw while the left had an enormous round saw. Behind the robot was a long tail, tipped with a drill that whirled around menacingly.
Descole and the Detragan sat upon the Detra-giant, controlling it's every move.
"Ambrosia shall be mine!" Descole shouted as he started to move the Detraga-giant towards the island forest.
He made the Detraga-giant leap into the moat, sending a tidal wave on to the forest. Melina almost fell off the large machine, but managed to hold onto the side.
The group watched the Detra-giant slowly creep its way towards the main part of the island, unsure what to do.
Whistler fell to his knees in distress, "Melina!" he shouted in desperation, "Melina!" he stumbled to his feet, wanting to save her daughter, but Emmy held him back.
"Mr. Whistler!" Emmy cried as he made sure the composer didn't kill himself, "please you need to calm down."
Whistler gave up and fell to his knees once more.
"Please," he begged, "someone save Melina..."
Edgar turned to Layton, "Prof, what should we do?" he asked seriously. He didn't care about Descole or his stupid robot. He just wanted Melina to be safe.
Layton saw the determined look in Edgar's eyes. It was the same look he had when he wanted to save Misthallery.
Layton looked around for a solution before his eyes fell on something.
"There is a way to save her," Layton muttered, causing Edgar to look at where he was looking.
Edgar sighed, "You have got to be kidding me," he muttered as soon as he saw the Grasshopper, nearby. He didn't think he would be in that death trap twice in a day, but it was the only way to save Milena.
"Emmy, stay here and get everybody out," Layton ordered, "Edgar come with with me," he then ran to the Grasshopper.
Edgar turned to Emmy and gave Nina to her.
"Wish me luck," he told her before attempting to follow Layton, however Emmy grabbed his wrist.
Edgar turned back and looked at Emmy's serious expression.
"Please..." she hesitated slightly, "...just don't die, okay," she begged.
Edgar blinked in surprise before he smiled reassuringly at her.
"Like I would give you the satisfaction, princess," he joked, making her smile as well.
"Shut up, pig," she replied before she let him go.
Emmy watched him leave and climb into the backseat of the Grasshopper along with Layton. She felt Nina tug at the lapels of her coat and turned to see her worried expression.
"Is Edgar going to be okay?" she asked in concern.
Emmy smiled reassuringly, "He'll be fine. I promise," she comforted.
Nina nodded in understanding before she turned back to see Layton and Edgar ride away on the Grasshopper towards the Detra-giant.
Well that was a confusing chapter to write. I hope the explanation came through alright. If not then I'm sorry.
For some reason, I find it really hard to describe robots. First the drilling machines and now the Detra-giant.
Anyway thanks for reading :)
Next Time: Layton and Edgar vs a giant killer robot…again.
