Chapter 36: Almost Sleepless Night
Becky is up like a shot, having just had a nightmare about Grimmel and Drago teaming up to kill their daughter, Ruby.
Becky quietly but quickly gets up from the bed, so not to wake her husband Eret, and goes over to the cradle where their sleeping daughter lay, softly breathing.
Becky breathes a small sigh of relief, seeing her daughter's tiny chest move up and down with each breath.
Ever so carefully, Becky takes her sleeping daughter from her cradle and sits down in the rocking chair next to it.
Becky rarely sings, as she hates the sound of her voice, but knows her voice will keep her daughter sound asleep.
Ruby begins to fuss a bit, but when
Becky begins to softly sing an old lullaby to her daughter, she quiets down. Almost the same one her late mother-in-law sang on her and Eret's wedding night.
Hush now, my baby
Be still, love
Don't cry
Sleep as you're rocked in my arms
Sleep and remember this old lullaby
And I'll keep you safe and calm
Soon, both Ruby and Becky fall back asleep.
Eret wakes up from a similar nightmare as his wife's, and notices she's not in the bed. He spots her familiar silhouette in the rocking chair at the end of the room.
Eret gets up, and walks over to his wife.
"Honey, it's the middle of the night, what are you -?"
Eret stops, seeing his dear wife asleep in the rocking chair, holding their five-week old baby girl, who is also asleep.
He smiles softly, knowing exactly what's going on.
He gently takes his daughter from Becky's arms and places her back in the cradle. He then gently scoops up his wife and takes her back to bed.
The next morning, Becky finds Eret asleep, next to their daughter's cradle. She smiles softly at her husband, then heads downstairs to quietly start breakfast after wrapping Eret up in a blanket.
Soon, Eret heads downstairs, leaving his daughter asleep.
"Good morning, my love."
"Good morning."
"Did you have the same nightmare I had?"
"With Grimmel and you-know-who teaming up to kill our daughter?"
"That's the one."
"Yes, I did. I just had to make sure she was okay. That she was still breathing."
"You're protective of her. I am, too."
"I know you are." Becky smiles softly at her husband, and places a plate of eggs, bacon and toast in front of him before preparing her own plate.
"You didn't have to cook breakfast, darling."
"I know. I wanted to, though."
"Well, thank you."
"You're welcome."
The two eat, glad their daughter is safe and sound.
