A/N: I had a sudden impulse to write them. It's short and it's random and it's unedited and it's written at 3:13 am and…yeah, I don't even know anymore. They're young here though, as they usually are when I write them.

Disclaimer: not mine.

"You know what I realized, Remus?"

"I do not, Lily Evans. Would you care to enlighten me?"

"It's a little bit odd."

"What in this world isn't? Honestly."

"It's funny and it's sad but I don't think you'll ever be happy with anyone who's not me," and she actually dared to finished with a laugh, not forced but rather cocky. As hell. As always.

He tried not to sigh at something that sounded like such old news. "I don't think so either, Lily."

And for the first time in a long time, both of them were being painfully honest.

And still, her laughter was genuine and his smile was brittle and this was the way it would always be.

She would ask him why it was that the notion of them together was so impossible but she knew better. Much better. Time taught her well and so did he.

It's an old thought, she knows. She knows, she knows, she knows.

Still, it's a thought, and still, she thinks—albeit uselessly—that in another universe, they would have been gold and they would have been perfect.

Maybe even better than a golden perfect.

In another universe, they would have been love.
