Chapter 65: Eret's Fight
Takes place just after the events of HTTYD2, during the comic/graphic novel "The Serpent's Heir". Before Eret's family and Jasmine and her family arrive, before Eret and Becky officially get married. So Eret doesn't know his mom has passed.
(Becky's POV)
I'm helping clear off some of the ice with my new dragon Amethyst, when I hear a familiar voice call out.
"Oi! Back off!"
Eret. Amethyst and I stop what we're doing and we head over to see my husband, Eret, is in a fight with some Berkians.
"Hold 'im down!"
"Blasted outsider! This is your fault! And that wife's of yours!"
The crowd around us gasps, and tears form in my eyes.
"Now, guys, I can handle insults directed at me. But stay. The Hel. Away. From. My. Girl."
Despite my tears, I smile with pride.
Hiccup steps forward with Toothless and Gobber.
"Whoa, whoa! Break it up! We're all friends here!" Hiccup exclaims.
"You got it, chief!" Eret replies as he roundhouses two of the men.
Eret approaches us, and Hiccup asks Eret what's going on.
"Nothing demanding your attention. You just let, Eret, Son Of Eret deal with…"
"Why are you asking him? He's not even from Berk! And his wife is a bloody outcast! She shouldn't even be alive." One of the men shouts. Eret's quick to put an arm around me to comfort me, knowing that my being banished was one of the hardest things I ever had to go through, considering you-know-who raped me and fathered my first child.
"Look at our village! Destroyed by an outsider! And now we let two more into our ranks!"
"We told him that seems almost as foolish as ordering us to rebuild this mess…'chief'."
"…I see. Eret, I appreciate your defending me, but that's not necessary. We all have lots to do to restore Berk." Hiccup says as he walks away. The three men go to attack Hiccup, but Gobber warns him and Hiccup uses Inferno to stop the men.
Eret and I quietly walk to the docks to just be by ourselves.
"Are you alright, love? I knew I should've told those men off for insulting you."
It's then I break down, sobbing. Eret's quick to hold me.
"Shhh. Shhh. Those men have no idea what you've been through with you-know-who. What we've been through."
"Why do they treat us like we're the bad guys? We helped save the dragons, didn't we?"
"We did, love. And they may not trust us because of you-know-who."
It's then the three men come up to us.
"Why do you say 'you-know-who', outsider? Don't want to trigger that pretty little wife of yours? We'll teach her something to be triggered about! Drago Bludvist may have been defeated for now, but I'm sure he'll come back and teach that girl a lesson about defying him."
I curl up into a ball, and I can hear Eret stand up.
(Eret's POV)
"Look, mates…you can't say that name in front of her. Look at her! She's practically having a mental breakdown as we speak. Now, if you'll excuse me." I realize that only one of the men is in front of me.
I turn, and, to my horror, the other two men are kicking my wife.
"Hey! What is going on here?!" Hiccup asks, flying in on Toothless.
"Knock it off. Now. Eret, get Becky to Gothi as soon as possible so she can examine her. I'll send the twins over so they can be with their sister."
"You got it, Chief." My wife is shaking like a leaf in autumn and I gingerly pick her up and I take Amethyst up to Gothi's.
Gothi soon examines her, and Fishlegs arrives to translate Gothi's writing.
"Becky, she says you're really lucky. No major internal damage, but you may be sore for a few days."
"That's great news, Fishlegs. Thank you." I tell her. Becky hasn't spoken since the attack.
"You're welcome. I'm so sorry those mean men did that to her. She doesn't deserve it, after all she's been through. And neither do you."
"Thank you, Fishlegs. Those words help. Has Becky ever broken down like this before? When she first lived here?"
"Not that I'm aware of. You'd have to ask the twins or Hiccup. They were the ones who spent the most time with her before she got banished. Gothi says that Becky will need to stay overnight for observation, and that you guys can leave in the morning."
"Thanks again, Fishlegs."
"Not a problem."
Ruffnut and Tuffnut soon arrive to be with their sister, and my poor wife still hasn't spoken. She's just lying there, curled up in the fetal position, sobbing. There's little I can do to calm her.
She won't let me leave her, and, honestly, I can't blame her. Even though what those men said was hurtful, they were technically right. Becky and I are outsiders, but that doesn't mean we can't be trusted. Those men have no clue what Becky and I went through, especially what she went through.
Becky is sobbing so hysterically, she begins to get sick and hyperventilate. I'm brought back to the night after she was returned to me after spending ten months with Drago, when she got sick and started hyperventilating.
"Oh, my darling. I'm here, love. I'm right here." I wish Mum were here; she'd know what to do. But she's back on Wolfsbane, probably wondering where her baby boy is. Hopefully I'll get to see her someday soon; hopefully my family got word of my and Becky's official wedding and they're on their way.
Ruffnut and Tuffnut look absolutely helpless, as they don't know what to do for their sister that they haven't seen in three years, and previously thought her dead.
I hold back my Becky's hair as she vomits into a bucket, and Ruffnut rubs her sister's back. I mouth a thank you to Ruffnut, knowing that, if it weren't for her and Tuffnut, Becky wouldn't even be here right now. I never would've known she existed, and that breaks my heart, because, despite all of the hardships we've gone through, I wouldn't trade any of them – okay, that's a lie, I'd trade Drago torturing my girl for her not having night terrors. I wouldn't trade almost any of them for knowing my wife.
If that makes any sense.
Ruffnut and I look at each other, and we have a mutual understanding: Ruffnut and I would give anything to take Becky's pain away, and I know, despite only knowing him for a couple of days, Tuffnut feels the same.
Soon, Becky has finished getting sick, and she lay back, and grips my hand.
"I'm here, my darling. I'm here. Just breathe." I say, caressing back her hair.
I know that what those men have put her through has forever changed her, and myself, as well.
But I know that we can get through anything, as long as we're together, and as long as we have each other. Despite what Drago has put us through, we are stronger than ever before.
