The soft breeze ran through the long grass. Two boys lay side-by-side. Remus Lupin smiled at his twin, who was looking up at the sky. It had been a few days since their adoption was finalized. They both decided to take in the warm summer breeze.
"Rom?" Remus asked, closing his eyes when he heard birds chirping. Romulus looked at him and nodded at him with a smile. "Is it weird that we have a family again and we get to just enjoy moments like this?" Romulus looked at his brother who nodded but a sad smile formed on his face. Romulus then pointed to his throat. "I know but things are better now," Remus said with a sigh. Another warm breeze hit him in the face. He picked up a stick and ran it through and spun it between his fingers, as though he were a child playing with a magic wand. Romulus put his hands behind his head and let out a breath.
'How I wish I could say something to you brother. Stupid Greyback.' Romulus thought, looking at his brother who had his eyes closed now, with his forearm over his face to shield his eyes from the bright sun. 'I wish I can tell you, brother, that I love you but, I can't. I couldn't even say goodbye to his parents either. They were dead and I..'
Romulus wiped the tears from his eyes and looked at Remus, who had his eyes open now. He was staring at him.
"Rom? Are you okay?" Remus asked, throwing the stick in his hand across the yard behind their new home. Romulus nodded and closed his eyes. The wind blew through his sandy brown hair.
"Alright," Remus said, rolling over to his side and closing his eyes again. He fell asleep with the sun in his eyes.
When he woke, Romulus was laughing silently as he watched a spider crawl around on a leaf that he had in his hand. Remus opened his eyes and watched his brother.
"What did you find Rom?" The thirteen-year-old asked his brother. Romulus smiled and showed Remus the spider.
"Cool," Remus said, looking at it and watching it crawl around. "Look, I'm..." Remus cut off. Romulus looked at him and put the leaf down and smiled, biting his lip.
'It's not your fault. It's just hard.' Romulus thought, putting his hands behind his head again. He looked down at his notepad and wrote: 'I'm sorry. I'm not used to this, and I wish I could tell you something. I wish I could have said something to mum and dad before⦠you know." He handed the notepad to Remus and shook his head, shaking his head causing the strands of grass in his hair to fall out. Remus took it and read it over.
"I understand, Romulus. It's not your fault. However, we can do this together," Remus said, handing him the notepad back and looking up at the sky. The sun was setting, and it was almost dinner time, but he didn't want to move. He was sure that Romulus didn't either. Maybe it was a twin thing, or maybe just wishful thinking, that they could keep being carefree boys on a warm day.
Romulus nudged him and pointed at the backdoor to the house when he saw someone open it. Remus followed his hand and shook his head.
"I kind of want to stay out here and relax. I think we deserve it, Rom," Remus answered. Romulus laughed and agreed silently and considered closing his eyes for a nap himself when he heard someone walk up to them.
"Boys, dinner's ready. Do you want to come in and eat it or stay out here?" their new adoptive mother asked. Remus opened his eyes, blinking hard in the sun, considering it, and shared a look with Romulus before nodding.
"Can we eat it out here?" Remus asked. She smiled, indulged them, and went back inside for the plates. "This is going to be great!" Remus said to his brother and licked his lips and nodded, happiness shining in his eyes. Remus hasn't hadn't seen that from him in a long time and he was happy; he felt sure that everything would be alright now.
