Robert Goren looked at his partner. She was lying asleep on the hospital bed, with IV's in her arms and a facemask to help her breathe. It had been twelve hours since Sebastian had kidnapped her, and she had been in the hospital for one of them. He had a suspicion that they were looking for the wrong person, but he wasn't sure. Maybe he'd talk to Declan later…

It scared him to see her lying there, almost lifeless. She had been unconscious the entire time. The only moment she was awake, the nurse told him, was when she was brought in. Only awake long enough to ask them to call Major Case and tell them where she was.

That text message scared him shitless. He never expected Alex to be a target. She didn't fit the profile. But, then again, the kidnapper chose women at random.

"Eames…"

He took a bandaged hand and brought it to his face. It felt so cold. The heart monitor beat out a steady rhythm in the background.

"Eames… please."

An emotion welled up inside of him. It was familiar, but he hadn't felt it in a while. He thought back to the other times he felt it. When his mother first showed signs of schizophrenia, a few times in the army, a few years ago when that suspect was about to shoot his kids, and now. It was fear.

"Eames… Alex… I can't loose you. You gotta pull through. I can't loose you, Alex."

His eyes started to sting. No! He couldn't cry here. Not in a public place. The tears couldn't be stopped. One fell, and then another, until he couldn't stop if he tried.

"I… I… I love you, damn it!"

He placed her hand back onto the bed, and for the first time in over thirty years, the lapsed altar boy prayed.

A/N: Well, how was it?

I don't own Law & Order, it belongs to Dick Wolf along with the half of the world that doesn't belong to JK Rowling.
