Spiderman clung to the window of the SHIELD building staring into the room at the man behind the desk. They had been staring at each other for a good ten minutes before the owner of the office opened the window. "You have a lot of nerve showing your face up here."
Flipping into the room, Spiderman launched straight into it before he lost his nerve. "What is A1?"
"I beg your pardon?" Nick Fury asked as he settled back behind the desk.
"A1. What does that mean?"
Fury remained quiet before she shook his head. "I don't know what you're talking about."
Reaching into his suit once more, he laid the birth certificate on Fury's desk. The man inspected the document closely as realization found him. "This is from the file you stole."
"Technically, the contents of that file belong to Peter, but we can focus on the technicalities later. Right now, I need you to tell me what A1 stands for."
"A1 isn't a what, it's a who."
Shaking his head, Spiderman forced himself to remain calm despite the annoyance that was growing inside of him. "No it's not. It's a what. It's a clue."
Fury lifted an eyebrow at that before chuckling. "I see you've watched too many crime scene shows in your spare time."
Blowing out a breath, Spiderman balled up his fist. "Stop playing dumb with me. I was told that A1 is a clue. Now tell me." The boy willed his heart and head to slow down but his inner thoughts protested.
Nooo! We're so close to finding out who A1 is. Now is not the time to go slow. Now is the time to demand answers.
"What does A1 mean?" he repeated. Fury shook his head in amusement. "I don't know where you're getting your information from, but it's wrong. Now I suggest you return the file and go back to playing superhero."
Spiderman narrowed his eyes as he took a few steps forward and stabbed the birth certificate with one finger. "I know what I'm talking about. When I showed this to Vanessa Foster, she confirmed that A1 is a clue and not a person. Now stop lying to me and tell me what it means."
Fury froze at that. He licked his lips as he sat straight in his chair. "Vanessa Foster. She's in New York? You spoke to her?"
"Yes, I did and she told me that A1 is a clue. Now. Tell. Me."
"Where did you see her?"
"No. Tell me what it means."
"Alright, I'll tell you, but you need to tell me where you saw Vanessa Foster at."
Spiderman regarded him in a way that indicated that he didn't believe the man behind the desk. Fury held up his hands in surrender. "Okay, how about I go ahead and tell you, then you can tell me where you saw Vanessa."
Spiderman stood still for a moment before he nodded slowly. "Okay."
"A1 isn't a what it is indeed a who, but I can see how Vanessa might have thought otherwise."
"Skip the small talk and start talking."
Fury snorted once before tapping the birth certificate. "A1 means two things if you think about it. The first is Assignment 1. Vanessa got pregnant during her first Assignment, so naturally she would think of that, but after her child was born, we did a quick DNA test and were able to confirm the identity of the child's father."
"Why the DNA test?" Spiderman interrupted.
"Because during her first assignment, Vanessa slept with two different men. James Barnes and Steve Rogers. We needed to confirm who the father was naturally."
"And?"
"That's where the second option comes in. A1 truly means Avenger One. In this case. The first Avenger, which is Steve Rogers. We couldn't very well put Steve Rogers on the birth certificate."
Spiderman stood frozen as he allowed the news to absorb into his brain. Steve Rogers is your father. Nope! He's lying.
"You're lying."
"No, I'm not. I can easily get a DNA sample from Mr. Rogers if you provide me with Peter. We can easily prove all of what I have just said."
The breath in Spiderman's body threatened to leave him. "Now, where did you talk to Vanessa Foster?"
Spiderman didn't answer as his feet dragged him towards the window as a fog of information clouded his brain. "Spiderman, we made a deal. Where can I find Vanessa?"
Spiderman turned back to the man as the mumble of words finally broke though. "Huh?"
Fury regarded the shell shocked boy carefully before repeating his question.
"Oh, um...she's at the Avengers compound. They...uh...kept her there to keep her away from m-Peter."
Fury stopped as he stood, with anger filling his body. "The Avengers are holding Vanessa and Peter?"
"What? No, um...just Vanessa. They had Peter but he managed to get away." As Spiderman spoke, his words slowly started to trail off as his brain still tried to process the news that he just received.
"But the Avengers had Peter at one point?
"Yeah."
"Where is Peter now?"
"Peter? Oh, uh...he's safe. Look, I got to go." Without a second glance, Spiderman climbed out of the window and into the air of New York as Fury watched. Picking up his phone, he pressed a number and waited for the voice on the other end to sound off.
"Maria. Gather a team, we're heading to the compound."
Steve sat on the sofa with his head resting against the back of it. After his argument with Bucky, he came straight in and sat down. Sleep threatened to take him over when the sofa dipped as another person sat down next to him. Turning his head, his eyes fell on Bruce. The doctor eyed the first Avenger carefully.
"Did you need something?" Steve asked, trying to keep his voice kind.
"I was wanting to make sure you're okay."
Steve lifted his eyes to the ceiling as he mentally sighed. "I'm fine, and I wish everyone would stop asking me that. I. Am. Fine."
"Okay."
They two men sat in silence but Steve could tell the other man was still looking at him. "Did you need something else?"
"You know if you want to talk, I can listen. Just the two of us and nobody else has to-"
"Have you been talking with James?"
"James? Are you referring to Bucky? Since when do you call him James?"
"Bruce, I didn't sign up for a therapy session."
The doctor lifted his hands. "Sorry, it's just you seem really on edge and that's unlike you."
Sitting up, Steve regarded the man with a firm look. "I'm going to say it again. I'm fine."
Bruce stared back at the Avenger with a careful gaze, despite the fact that his entire being was telling him something was wrong with the man. He went to open his mouth to say something that would hopefully get the man to open up, but Tony came bouncing through the door as if it were Christmas.
"Good news gentlemen, Friday is back up and running."
Bruce nodded and stood. "Okay, I'm going to go and see if I can speed up the DNA."
"Don't forget to take me out of the equation," Tony announced.
"It's too late, I already put your sample in, so we just need the result at this point. Don't worry, we know you're not the father."
"Come get me when it's done," Steve said as he walked out of the room, down the hall and into his room, where he dropped on the bed and allowed sleep to take control of his life.
Hours had passed but to Steve it was only mere minutes from the moment he closed his eyes to when he woke to Clint shaking him. Staring up at the man, he frowned. "Wha' are you do'n here?"
Clint chuckled as he stood back and watched his team captain join the land of the living. "I got here a few about an hour ago. Scotts here too. He's not happy that you guys managed to lose the kid."
Steve grumbled before laying back down. Throwing an arm over his face, he laid there while Clint watched. "You awake?"
"Yeah."
"Alright, well let's go. Bruce wanted me to come and grab you. Says the DNA tests are done courtesy of Friday and from the sound of his voice things might be a little weird."
Steve squinted up at him. "Weird how?"
Clint responded with a shrug before opening his mouth. "I don't but it can't be weirder than Tony not being the father. I mean can you imagine, Tony being with a woman, he hasn't slept with. I mean is the world coming to an end?" The archer let loose a chuckle but the man on the bed remained silent. Frowning, Clint leaned forward until he was face to face with Steve, close enough to kiss the man.
"Do you mind?" Steve asked.
Clint ignored him as he inspected every inch of the man's face, taking great care to notice the developing dark spots under the man's eyes. "When's the last time you slept?"
"You just woke me up."
Clint waved him off. "No. I mean when's the last time you got some real rest."
"I'm fine."
Clint opened his mouth to say something but Bucky appeared in the doorway. "Hey, you guys coming?"
"Yeah," Steve responded as he climbed out of bed before exiting the room in what Clint would call a hastened pace. The Archer and the Winter Soldier shared a look before following the man out into the living room where Rhodes was finishing catching Scott and Pepper up to speed. Everyone sat one a piece of furniture while Bruce stood at the front of the room.
"Okay, now that everyone is here, as I was saying. The results are in but they're surprising if not weird."
"How?" Sam questioned.
"Well, first there is a bit of something in Peter's DNA but the sample we got wasn't enough to figure out what it was, we might need more for that but I'm speaking more in terms of the results themselves."
"Which are?" Steve yawned.
"Well first, I can confirm that Vanessa Foster is Peter's biological mother and-"
"And the father?" Tony asked as he stared at the other two men in question.
"Tony, stop." Pepper warned as she waved at Bruce to continue.
"Right. Well, The father of Peter Parker, based off the DNA, is Steve Rogers."
All eyes fell on the avenger as looks of confusion flashed across the faces of everyone except Bruce. "How is that possible?" Steve asked.
"Well you see, little Stevie, when a man and woman-"
"I know how it happened, smartass," Steve snapped, causing eyes everywhere to grow wider. "I meant, how is it possible that I'm Peter's father. From the sounds of it Bucky slept with her more times than I did. We only did it once."
"Once is all it takes," Tony mumbled but stopped talking when he got an elbow to the gut. Pepper gave the man a look before turning her attention back to the room.
"What's weird about Peter being Steve's son?"
"Well nothing, it has nothing to do with Steve."
"Okay, elaborate," Clint demanded as he kept an eye on the new father. Something wasn't right with him and the archer was determined to figure out what it was, but the situation right now prevented him from doing so.
"It has to do with Tony."
"Me," the billionaire frowned.
"Yes. When I ran the DNA, I put Tony's in there before we found out there was no way he could be the father," Bruce explained to the people who were absent during that time, before he continued. "When I ran it I was purely looking for paternity, but something else came back instead. I got back four different matches."
"Four matches? Meaning what?" Scott asked.
"Four different DNA matches. The first being Vanessa to Peter, confirming a parental relationship, the second, Steve to Peter confirming a parental relationship. Now this is the weird part. I tested Tony to Peter looking for a parental connection which isn't there but I was able to confirm a relationship between the two. The fourth DNA match was for Vanessa and Tony."
"Excuse me?" Tony asked as he leaned forward. It was as if the certified genius didn't understand what the man had just said.
"I'm saying that while Steve is Peter's father, Tony you are also related to the boy and if my data is correct, you're also related to Vanessa Foster. The DNA match kicked back that you are a sibling or possibly half sibling of Vanessa making you the biological uncle to Peter Parker."
A/N: Whoomp there it is...
