Chapter 2.-How can you mend a broken heart?
Two weeks ago…
Andi is sitting in the living room of her and Bex's apartment, wearing her pajamas with a large glass bowl on her lap and eating with a wooden spoon, looking sad and depressed after what happened with Jonah that morning in the school parking lot that all the illusion I felt to be with him collapsed overnight with a simple confession.
"Cookie dough straight out of the bowl, huh?" Bex asked as she noticed her daughter eating silently and looking sad.
"It's been that kind of day," Andi confessed, looking down and eating the cookie dough.
"Well…" Bex walked over the couch grabbing a spoon and sitting next to her. "I guess this is dinner" she adds, putting the spoon inside of the bowl and then putting it into her mouth. "what's got you down?" she then asks, looking at her. "Does it have anything to do with this?" she asks and shows the bracelet to Andi.
"Could you please put that back where you found it?" Andi asks her mom with sadness.
"In the trash?" Bex inquired.
"Which is where it belongs" Andi responded heartbroken.
"This is the famous bracelet, isn't it?" Bex wanted to know. "What happened?"
"Not a lot," Andi tearfully replies. "I can tell you what didn´t happen, though. Jonah never got me anything. Jonah never even sent me a text that wasn´t mostly emojis. Jonah never even asked me out on a real date. All he did was say that he wanted to spend more time with me. and he..held my hand a couple of times. And somehow I convinced myself that we were something. But we were never really anything"
"You were friends," Bex whispered.
"Yeah, yeah" Andi nods tearfully. "we had that"
An hour later, Andi falls asleep on the couch, Bex gets up, puts a blanket over her and then puts the bracelet inside on a special box that she made for her to keep it safe.
-END OF THE FLASHBACK.
Andi was having dinner with Bex when they both heard a knock on the door.
"Who will it be at this hour?" Andi said, confused.
"I don't know, but I'm going to find out," Bex told him and got up from the table, before walking to the door and peeking out the window. "Andi..."
"What" Andi said looking up and Bex stared into her eyes. "No" she shook her head. "Please Bex, make him go away. I'm not ready."
"Don't worry, I know what I'm going to tell him" Bex assured her. "Go to your room, I'll catch up with you in a moment" the girl nodded and got up from the table. Immediately Bex opened the door and on the other side was Jonah. "hey Jonah"
"Hi Bex," Jonah greeted shyly. "Is Andi here? I need to talk to her, I think there was a misunderstanding the other day"
"
"Trust me, I know," Bex told him. "and I don't think it's a good idea for you to see her, I don't know if you noticed but, you broke my daughter's heart and it's a shame because I thought you were different"
"I'm different," Jonah told her. "I never meant to hurt her, I really care about her. It's just…"
"You don't have to tell me anything, whatever you have to do, figure it out" Bex told him. "But I'm going to ask you to give Andi her space."
"I never said we broke up, she misunderstood" Jonah protested sadly, finally sighing in surrender. "I get it, if you see her...can you give her this?" he handed Bex a box of cookies frosted with the word "Sorry." "my mom baked them"
"I don't know if that's a good idea" Bex was hesitant.
"Please, I already feel bad" Jonah requested. "Just tell her I came to see her and I hope she likes the cookies"
"I will," Bex told him. "thank you Jonah"
"Bye Bex" Jonah said, turning around and walking away into the darkness.
Bex entered the apartment and closed the door behind her with the box of cookies in her hand, before heading to her daughter's room and knocking on the door.
"Andiman, it's all clear" Bex told her daughter.. "You can come out" Andi sighed in relief.
"He's gone?" Andi asked coming out of her room.
"Yes," Bex said. "He wanted to talk to you but I told him you weren't ready and to leave you alone"
"Thank you mom, you're the best" Andi told her hugging her.
"Always" smiled Bex. "By the way, he told me to tell you..."
"Oh no, now what?" Andi complained.
"I'm just passing on a message," Bex muttered.. "As I was saying, he told me to tell you that he came to see you and did this for you" she handed him the box.
"What is this?" Andi asked opening the box. "Cookies? Since when does Jonah Beck bake?"
"He didn't make them, his mom did," Bex said. "and for a guy who doesn't like commitment, that speaks well of him"
"No," Andi said. "I know what he is doing and it's not going to work, he thinks that coming to see me and apologizing with some cookies is going to repair the damage, but the truth is that things don't work like that"
"Take as long as you need," Bex said. "If you don't want the cookies, I'll eat them myself and we'll tell him you ate them"
"Jonah Beck will be many things but he's not stupid" Andi told him. "he's going to realize we lied to him; No, I think I'll do anything else"
"Remember the time you helped me with the closure ceremony and we put Gabriel's picture in the ex-boyfriends box?" Bex asked her.
"Yeah," Andi confessed. "That was the day we found the picture of you and Bowie when you were in high school and you looked so in love, it was the happiest day of my life because you let me keep the picture."
"And you asked me if you were going to have the picture or the love," Bex reminded her.
"Exactly" Andi says smiling
."For now you have the picture, but I'm sure you'll find love very soon" Bex assured her with a smile. "and for that to happen, you need to close your cycle with Jonah"
"You're right," Andi told her mom. "Now is the time"
"Come on" Bex said to her daughter.. "I have something for you"
"What is?" Andi asked her mom until they sat on the couch, Bex placed the box of cookies on the table and took the special box for Andi and gave it to her. "Bex? Is that for me?"
"It's your own keepsake box," Bex told him. "here you can keep everything that reminds you of Jonah and to let it go, we need to start with the closure"
I'm awake in the afternoon
I fell asleep in the living room
And it's one of those moments
When everything is so clear
Bex sighs, puts the pictures that she took of Andi having her first frisbee lesson with Jonah and puts them inside the box, Andi is laying in her bed crying as she hugs her pillow tightly.
Before the truth goes back into hiding
I want to decide 'cause it's worth deciding
To work on finding something more than this fear
It takes so much out of me to pretend
Tell me now, tell me how to make amends
Maybe, I need to see the daylight
To leave behind the half-life
Don't you see I'm breaking down
Lately, something here don't feel right
This is just a half-life
Is there really no escape?
No escape from time
Of any kind
The next day,Andi walks on the streets holding the box of cookies, tearfully she stands inside of Jonah´s house, she knocks the door, Jonah opens and sees the cookies in the porch but no one there, sadly he leans to pick up the box and looks everywhere but he didn't find anyone there, he enters his house and closes the door behind him.
I keep trying to understand
This thing and that thing, my fellow man
I guess I'll let you know
When I figure it out
But I don't mind a few mysteries
They can stay that way it's fine by me
And you are another mystery I am missing
It takes so much out of me to pretend
Maybe, I need to see the daylight
To leave behind the half-life
Don't you see I'm breaking down
Lately, something here don't feel right
This is just a half-life
Is there really no escape?
No escape from time
Of any kind
Come on lets fall in love [Repeat: x3]
Again
Andi arrives at the lake, she pulls out from her pocket a picture of her and Jonah smiling and hugging, she tears the photo into pieces and throws them into the lake and watches as they sink to the bottom of the water.
Cause lately something here don't feel right
This is just a half-life,
Without you I am breaking down
Wake me, let me see the daylight
Save me from this half-life
Let's you and I escape
Escape from time
Come on lets fall in love [Repeat: x3]
Again
"I knew I'd find you here" a male voice spoke from behind her, Andi turned around and realized it was her dad.
"Bowie..." Andi whispered and hugged him tightly. "I missed you so much"
"And I to you little one" Bowie told her, when they separated from the hug he saw that his daughter was crying. "Hey, are you okay?"
"No…" Andi shook her head. "I'm not okay" she started to cry.
"You know what will make you feel better? An ice cream" said Bowie with a smile. "I read that they are good for healing broken hearts, do you want?"
"You know me so well" Andi said smiling and then looked at Bex, who was walking towards them. "Wait, did you tell him?"
"We are your parents, we will always be there for you" Bex told her and both she and Bowie hugged their daughter. "about the ice cream..."
"I'm in" smiled Andi and for the first time her broken heart was forgotten at that precise moment to enjoy an afternoon with her parents as a happy family.
