"I had very good reason to stop." Cameron's expression, when he just learned she wouldn't be coming back, affected her more than she had expected. "Lieutenant Colonel Carter to the bridge, Lieutenant Colonel Carter to the bridge, please." She sighed mentally at the very timely interruption, and one that ended the conversation Mitchell had started from the SGC.
She stood up, massaging her aching loins with one hand before heading for the bridge. She missed the SGC more than she had expected. Teal'c had left the base, Daniel had requested a transfer, and General O'Neill had taken up his new command in Washington long before she had left Colorado Springs. There were no regrets, nothing was keeping her in Colorado and Cheyenne Mountain. Cassandra had entered college, she wanted to become a doctor and join the military, the SGC, like her mother. There was nothing keeping her there anymore, the world had been saved and would continue to be saved, without her.
Thinking of Janet filled Samantha's heart with the powerful feeling of sadness that had become customary since the death of her best friend. She ran a weary hand through her blonde hair, a gesture not unlike that of her former superior and teammate. A smile came spontaneously to her lips at the idea that he could have rubbed off on her and she on him.
"Colonel, I'm sorry I had to interrupt your conference with the SGC". She reassured the young lieutenant with a smile and settled into the controls he had just released for her.
"It's nothing Lieutenant. What's going on ? The hyperdrive tests are complete?" She asked as she leaned into the flight computer.
"No, sir. An urgent communication for you. On channel 3." She frowned as the lieutenant walked away, leaving her alone. She bent down to grab a communications headset and turned on the screen. A mischievous gleam lighting up a warm brown gaze, a smile formed on her lips as she discovered the identity of her interlocutor. She would have recognized this look between thousand. Like every time she saw him, her heartbeat quickened slightly as an irrepressible smile lit up her face.
"Carter." He greeted her in his slightly drawling voice. She loved how he pronounced her name, the warmth he imparted to his few letters simply by saying them. Once she had been ashamed of her name, at a time when being the daughter of "General Carter" had been an embarrassment, if not a hindrance, to her as she made her military debut.
"General." A smile passed through brown eyes as they looked at each other, separated by thousands of miles, yet so complimentary, so close.
Just like before.
No, she had no regrets.
"So how are the tests going on our new intergalactic ship?" She leaned against the onboard console to speak with him more easily.
"So this is an official conversation... General?" He laughed, with that husky, sensual laugh that belonged only to him.
"Well... Colonel, I just wanted to make sure that Lieutenant Colonel Mitchell wasn't too disappointed to learn that you'd be spending the weekend in Washington and not in Colorado Springs." She stifled a laugh in the palm of her hand and checked to make sure no one was paying attention to what was happening on her screen.
"I assume you'll be there to greet me...General?" He nodded slowly, a teasing smile on his lips.
"And you'll never have been so well received, Colonel. After all, it is thanks to you that we will be adding a new ship to our fleet. It's at least worth it for the Commander of Homeland Security to come in person to welcome you after these two weeks away from our good old Earth." She saw him run a hand through his hair, a sign of embarrassment or awkwardness, and her smile grew wider. "I missed you Carter."
Yes, she had very good reasons for quitting the off-world missions. An excellent reason in the person of an Air Force general.
"You too my general..."
