Chapter 32: New Life
Red-wine colored eyes slowly opened. One blink, two blinks, and three blinks to get adjusted to the bright white surroundings. Tifa didn't know where she was. The last thing she remembered was…dying. Now it all came back to her, her heart rate accelerated and tears brimmed from her eyes. She had died in Cloud's arms. One of Jenova's surrogates had aimed at her love and before she knew it four bullet holes were evident on her body. She remembered feeling very sleepy and calm. She knew that she was dying but yet she was calm. Tifa looked around her and realized that she was in a void space. White all around and as far as she could see. She wasn't ready to accept death yet, but what could she do about it. Life had dealt her a low blow and now she was on her knees, or more like six feet under. The tears fell freely and she didn't try to stop them. She knew that there was no where to turn anymore and that there was no going back now. She had to face the reality of her death and try to move on. But move on to where? That was her question. She felt downcast, downtrodden, and disgusting. A feeling of nausea swept over her and she fell to her knees. Her stomach lurched and she almost vomited but she felt as though someone was watching her. She closed her eyes for a minute to regain control and pulled out several hair strands from her face.
She stood up, straightened her clothes, and turned around. She didn't see anybody and left the feeling to her imagination. She sighed deeply and turned back to her original position, attempting to walk away. She was stopped dead in her tracks and her heart dropped to the floor. What she saw was enough to make a smile spread on her face and embrace the flower girl that happened to appear out of thin air and was now standing there watching her with that all so familiar smile.
Tifa embraced her best friend and this time tears of joy fell.
"Aeris! What are you doing here? How did you die?" She asked
Aeris merely smiled and held Tifa's hands.
"We are not dead Teef. She explained. We are simply in our spirit forms. There really is no name for this place.
Tifa was a bit confused and her face showed it.
"Aeris…I don't understand. So what happened? The last thing I remember was being shot and dying in Cloud's arms. Why am I here now? How is everybody?
Aeris gave a light chuckle and linked her arm with Tifa's.
"Slow down Teef. You have some questions that need answering and I'll give and explanation to the best of my ability. Is that a deal?"
Tifa smiled and nodded. "Deal".
"Great. Now let's go."
As they walked along into seemingly nothingness. The scenery that was once all white began to shift. Slowly but surely. And before Tifa knew what happened they were walking along an ever winding path in the Sleeping Forest.
"Wow! How did we get here?" Tifa exclaimed.
"Simple. I just thought about it. Aeris replied. You can view this place as a lucid dream."
Tifa's eyes widened. "You mean I can make it bend to my every will."
And with that she had an idea. She closed her eyes. When she opened them again, both she and Aeris were in the Final Haven Pub, seated at the bar with two Hawaiian Blues to drink.
This is amazing; I wonder were all my customers are she thought. As if Aeris heard her very thought she explained:
"Only us Teef, no real people. This is in fact where our spirits go when they no longer inhibit our bodies."
As if I switched clicked in Tifa's head, she turned to Aeris.
"OH! So what happened? She asked
Aeris took a deep breath. It wasn't a long story but it was one she'd rather not relive or retell. She cleared her mind of all these thoughts and returned her attention to the now awaiting Tifa.
"Well as you remember you were shot four times, and we all thought you were dead for sure. Cloud took it the hardest and he underwent some kind of transformation. It seemed as though he transformed into an angel or something like that."
Tifa was speechless. An angel? How did that happen? She shook her head free of these thoughts and focused back on Aeris.
"So if I'm not dead…..what exactly am I? She asked
Aeris put her hands in her lap and took a deep breath. How could she tell her what she had done? How would she explain to her the transformation that she had under gone? It was a while before Aeris said anything and Tifa thought that maybe she had forgot the question.
"Aeris….what's going on? She asked, concern clear in her voice.
Aeris looked up at her friend and shook her head.
"Tifa I'm so sorry. But you are no longer human."
Tifa took in a deep breath, checked her self over, and pulled on her flesh.
"Aeris, I feel and look pretty human…what are you saying. If I'm so called not human anymore…then what am I?"
Aeris stood up and went to Tifa's side.
"I'm so sorry Teef. But I had to…in order to save you. You were dying and I cou…."
"Aeris! Tifa said rather firmly frustration and anger finally replacing worry and curiosity. Tell me what am I? And what is going on?"
Aeris looked at her friend. She held Tifa's hand and was grateful that she didn't pull her hand away.
"Tifa, in order to save you I had to share my blood with you……Tifa you're a Cetra.
Alright then I kno dis chap is kinda short but I had to leave you guys in suspense you kno another cliff hanger. So now you gotta wait until I write chap 33 to see Tifa's reaction to this.
