AN: The groundwork is now set. Enjoy.

Time: 1980

Ancient parchments were discovered within an old gothic church listed for demolition. The documents were tightly locked inside an iron box and the name Archbishop Kenelm was carved into the metal. Its contents were sent to the University of the West of England for examination. Professionals dated the documents to the era of the early Medieval period. Historians, after inspecting the passages, discovered a peculiar trend that coincided with the British legends of King Arthur. A solidifying evidence was the repetition of the words Mordred, Excalibur, father, Arthur, and rebellion. Mentions of the Knights of the Round Table were also present in the uncovered documents. Many historians hypothesized the possibility of the manuscripts, nicknamed Mordred Notes, to be a diary of sorts written by Knight Mordred.

Time: 2001

A fully translated version of Mordred Notes was released to the public. An archive of the papers was listed on the internet, which can be found on the official United Kingdom tourist website.

An American historian and college professor, Mund Macton in his mid 50s, was scrolling through his facebook page. The discovery of the Mordred Notes had painted a more comprehensible history of the legends of King Arthur. Yet, some parts also contradicted major portions of the myths. The main difference was the final confrontation between King Arthur and Knight Mordred, the king's son. Dr. Macton wished to resolve this mystery, but felt lost on where to begin. As such, he searched the internet for inspiration. There he found a particular post and replied to it:

RansomKnight: I recently got myself into reading the supposed diary of Mordred. It felt very similar to a story my parents used to tell. Lol.

MactonCheese: Hello, this is Dr. Mund Macton of the University of ********. Can you tell me more about this children's story?

RansomKnight: Sure, I don't mind. *Picture of story*

The Knight of Treachery

A little girl was born in the forest of wonder.

She was a blunt little thing,

Never giving up on anything.

Mo was what a kind lady called her

And gave her the strength to strike like thunder.

"To be a great knight." Mo would sing

As the lady showed her the king who she would be serving.

Yet, hatred reigned when the king made a blunder.

"Why do we have to kill?" Mo would say.

The king gave an answer that was far too tacky,

So she took the crown and made him pay.

She carved her fate as a King of Treachery

And turned herself into prey.

Even then, at her end, she was forever happy.

From there, the historian enthusiastically proposed a research study to uncover the rumors of unique stories being told by British families in the United Kingdoms. The college administration accepted his topic of research and provided him with a two month-long trip to Britain. On arrival, he visited his benefactor and new friend, RansomKnight. RansomKnight was in fact an undergraduate college student of University of the West of England with the name Jon Pant. This was the same university where the original documents were first inspected and now sat in the university owned museum. Inside a cafe, the two individuals talked about the story mentioned in their posts.

Dr. Macton took notice of the similarities indicated by Jon and agreed that the details were no mere coincidence. The old professor was impressed by the young student's intellect and offered the student a partnership to unearth the mystery. A position that Jon agreed to.

Together, they gathered information through online polls and in-person visits to families that were willing to share their experience. Two new stories were archived in their notes; they both held a similar narrative, one they assumed was Mordred's.

The King of Rebellion

"Look at this sard!" Screamed the knight

In his fury to make things right.

The clergy sung their tunes,

Pretending funny shapes were runes.

The child of miracles saw the ruse,

And gave the fools their bruise.

"I am King," said Mo the child,

"You will pay and be defiled."

She was the King of Rebellion,

Sending her foes straight to heaven.

For she has little mercy

And saw religion as heresy.

They could not escape her fury,

Only suffer and never be happy.

Duality of Mo

Black and blue,

Will force them to pay their due.

Sing the praise of this lord;

Bless her, not for her sword.

Cry as they always will

As her wrath continues to spill.

Only the end of this sickness

Will her world be refilled by happiness.

These stories/poems were spread through Britain, where the most prevalent were in regions in and within the discovery location of the Mordred Notes. Their biggest breakthrough was a conversation they held with a landowner. The man, Alexan Burin, was a supposed descendant of a popular baron family that existed in the days of old. His family name was also mentioned in the Mordred Notes, which the man would boast about to his friends and colleagues. To his insistence and trade deal, the man was allowed to join the duo as a third member. In return, Alexan allowed his family heirloom be lent out; it was a gemstone necklace passed down for millennia from the father to the oldest child. Now, the trio of Mordred enthusiasts got their hands on their first physical evidence.

Time: 15 April 2010 (Late Night TV Podcast on Medieval History)

"Mr. Burin, countless studies have already been conducted with mixed results. It has been agreed upon by many professionals in our field of work, including myself, that King Arthur and his legend is unhistorical." Stated Dr. Carlson Redis, a celebrated historian in Medieval history.

"Even you can't ignore the discoveries that we found." Alexan Burin stated. The old professor and student sat beside him. A show host placed himself between the four guests. The five individuals were on a stage centered around multiple cameras and a live audience. "The stories, Mordred Notes, legends, and my heritage is proof enough."

Alexan showed the gemstone necklace to the audience and host. "This heirloom of my family was given to me by my father. We tested it and it indeed is over a thousand years old."

"That necklace still does not prove to be in direct correlation to the legend of King Arthur, nor to the contradictions in the Mordred Notes." Dr. Redis argued back. "For all we know, the stone is just a pretty pebble."

A screenshot of the Mordred Notes appeared on the screen behind the guests. Some parts were circled in red ink. "Look here…In some passages, Mordred referred to herself and King Arthur as female. This is a clear false statement since they have been clearly defined in every other literature as both being born a man. The Mordred Notes do contain ounces of truth, but it could potentially be crazy ramblings of a priest."

Dr. Redis would have continued his rant, but he was assaulted by Alexan. A nice resounding slap echoed the stage.

"How dare you dishonor my family legacy! I'll show you crazy!" Alexan readied another swing. Dr. Redis retaliated with his tackle and the two fighters were brawling it out on live TV.

"Because you are all full of shit!" Dr. Redis cried out and threw a punch.

The host was lost for words and glanced at the producer for advice. Instead, he got a warning from the man sitting on the high chair. 'Fix this or else.' His boss signaled back to the host.

"Ummm, Dr. Redis and Alexan seemed to have provided a live representation of the family drama of Mordred and Arthur." A reaction box lit up encouraging the audience to cheer and boo for their respective sides. "The cheapshot by Dr. Redis is a brilliant retelling of King Arthur's rejection of Mordred."

Jon tried to stop the fight and got fisted in the chest by Dr. Redis. He later joined the fight to support Alexan. "The assist by Mordred's rebel allies weakens the king of Britain. That's gotta hurt. To our left, the security team representing Excalibur is ending the conflict. Dr. Redis comes out victorious and bruised."

Time: 16 April 2010

In a rented apartment three depressed individuals sat around a table. The room was illuminated by a single lamp centered on the table. There was a full moon outside, basking the table in its light.

"I am sorry that things got out of hand." Alexan broke the silence. Jon joined in with his own apologies.

"I guess I also got carried away and should have controlled myself…I am also sorry that your necklace broke." Jon dejectedly said. During the struggle, the heirloom was knocked onto the ground and accidentally stepped on by the security team. It now laid in pieces on the table; the gem fell from its metal container and the chains snapped.

Alexan shook his head and sighed. "Forget about that. It probably is just a pebble."

Their two months of search and interviews brought up nothing, but a couple of stories passed down by families. Their journey together was near its end and Dr. Macton would have to return to America without any reasonable results.

However, their sad mood did not reach Dr. Macton who was intensely staring at the loose gemstone.

"Um…Professor Macton?" Jon asked the older man. Dr. Macton gave no response and kept his attention at the gemstone. The other two men grew curious and tried to decipher what their friend had noticed from the rock. Suddenly, Dr. Macton shot up from his seat.

"I GOT IT!" He energetically declared. Swiftly, he grabbed the gemstone and placed it under the light of the full moon. Jon and Alexan shrugged their shoulders in confusion, which then turned into surprise. Exposed to the light and without the metal casings, the gemstone shone brilliantly and symbols projected from the stone onto the ground.

"This is our big breakthrough." He proclaimed in excitement.

"I know where this is." Alexan's eyes widened after taking a closer look at the mystical drawing. He ran into the drawer and rummaged for his belongings. "Eureka!"

Alexan pulled out a large ancient map of Medieval Britain and flattened it under the symbols. The symbols from the gem and the ink of the scroll matched up and Mordred's symbol manifested itself at spot on the map.

"X marks the spot." Jon noted.

"Well boys." Dr. Macton called his partners. "We are still in business." The trio fist bumped and happily drank their night away.

Time: 18 April 2010

The trio traveled to their destination using the map they sketched using the markings from the gemstone from the previous night. It brought them to uncharted landscapes and forgotten trails. Near the end, it showed the mystery to be hidden in the western parts of the Peak District National Park. If they were to reach their goal with mining equipment, they must sneak and uncover it before the park rangers could impede their progress.

At the midnight, they made their move. They snuck past the fences and walked into the wilderness. Soon, they reached an unnatural vertical slope on a hillside. Alexan brought out the gemstone and allowed the moonlight to interact with it. The markings began to shift as he deflected the projections onto the hillside. A large insignia of Mordred appeared upon the walls, absent of any other symbols that had led them to their present location.

Jon unpacked their tools and threw pickaxes to his two colleagues. Together, with shovels and pickaxes, they began hacking away the vegetation, stone, and soil. Unknown to them, the loud noise of their work notified three park rangers in the area. The rangers called for further support when they saw the trio damaging national property.

"Freeze!" One yelled.

"Keep digging. I'll halt them for as long as I can." Jon took notice first and threw his shovel at the ranger.

Alexan went to help Jon in stopping the park rangers. "Don't stop Dr. Macton." He screamed as he tossed the gemstone towards his colleague.

Dr. Macton caught the stone and continued digging. The fight escalated and the trio were overrun when the reinforcements arrived. As the professor was about to be tackled, he found a small gem shaped hole engraved in rusted metal. In mid tackle, Dr. Macton successfully placed the gem in the hole and the entire area trembled.

Everyone ceased their activities to see large portions of earth tumbling off the hillside. What laid underneath was a tunnel.

"This is it." Dr. Macton whispered with quivering lips. He entered the tunnel, followed by his friends. The rangers didn't stop them and instead followed their lead. Even they knew the importance of this discovery; many of them had seen the TV podcast where the trio was on. As one, the group descended into the cave. A bright light indicated their exit from the tunnel to a large throne room made of stone. The rangers stood in awe at the sight. In the center was a blade impaled into a pedestal. The blade must have been untouched and left to nature for centuries, yet it still looked brand new.

"That shape and markings…There's no doubt about it. That is Caliburn." Jon announced.

"Indeed. This looks to be the genuine artifact." Dr. Macton walked towards the structure for a closer look and confirmed Jon's claim. The two scholars examined every detail and took many images.

Alexan ignored them as his attention was on the throne at the other end of the room. There upon the throne, was a knight in black armor. Rapidly, he compared the images of the Mordred Notes on his phone to the figure before him. The drawings on the parchment perfectly matched what laid before him…It matched the bedtime stories his father used to tell him before bed.

"It's real…It's all REAL!" He faced his friends and the trio made eye contact. They ran towards each for a hug and embraced each other. They fell to the ground in laughter and tears. They had really did it; they found the truth.

Time: 21 April 2010

News spread of their trio's accomplishment. They were swarmed by the press and invited to multiple interviews. They became huge celebrities known across the planet in less than a day. Jon was able to graduate early for his accomplishments and decided to work full time with Dr. Macton on their new discovery. Dr. Macton chose to permanently stay in the United Kingdom to continue his research. The trio now lived together in a house near the Cave of Mordred, the site they excavated.

Alexan brought fame and honor to his family and appeared many times on TV to tell stories of their adventures. The two scholars also made frequent appearances on podcasts to retell their take on the Legend of King Arthur…Or in their case, the Legend of King Mordred.

"DNA was found on the metal casings of Alexan's necklace. The cells were hidden in a vacuum and protected through time by the gemstone. By comparing it to DNA tests from the bones of the armored King we can safely conclude that they are indeed a match. The illustrations on the Mordred Notes further proves the fact that the figure upon the throne is indeed the person we know as Mordred. In fact, it is also confirmed that the knight and later king is female." Dr. Macton stated in a TV podcast.

"Do you think we can use this DNA to trace it down the Mordred family line?" The host asked in anticipation.

Dr. Macton nodded. "We definitely can. In fact, they are already found, but are kept anonymous so that their lives won't be disrupted."

Omake/Extra 1

The hype surrounding the true history of Mordred had died down. However, Mordred enthusiasts kept increasing over the years. An annual festival to celebrate the discovery of the Cave of Mordred was held outside the site. People across the world had arrived here to participate. Food stalls, souvenir shops, and other forms of entertainment were all present.

Anyone could join the party and experience the fun. However, the entrance of the cave was taped off. Only those with a membership could enter. Inside the cave, a large group of hooded figures gathered in the throne room of Mordred; their left arms held flags signaling their country of origin. A figure stood over the rest of his compatriots on a wooden podium and revealed his face. Jon Pant raised his arms.

"We gather here to discuss all that is Mordred." He called out.

"For her happiness." They chanted back.

"She is superior to Arthur."

"For her happiness."

"She is our KING!"

"For her happiness."

Jon clapped and the rest followed. "At this annual gathering, we have wondrous news. Rejoice, the gods have answered and our king is now a playable servant in Fate Grand Order!" Jon opened his mobile app to show his Fgo game; the screen showed a maxed out Mordred.

A large cheer erupted from the cult members. Jon extended his arm to regain the silence. "Though their representation is a mockery of our king, we can hope that they will add other variations to the game in due time."

He paced around the podium and continued in disgust. "Now to a less appealing topic."

Jon paused and looked into the crowd. "Someone here is a heathen who has sullied the Mordred name." He snapped his fingers and a person among the crowd was forced to the front with his hands tied behind his back.

"This heathen has betrayed the trust of Cult Mo by doing the unspeakable." He angrily shouted.

"Please, I beg you. It was only one time." The criminal pleaded in a desperate attempt for mercy.

"One time too many." Jon glared and took something from his cloak. "Behold, his crimes."

In his hand was a doujin with a cover of a blushing Mordred and a towering King Arthur. "He has done a great evil and must be punished for his sins."

The crowd shouted in anger and threw rotten fruit towards the cowering criminal.

"He had made the ultimate sin of drawing an obedient Mordred to the cowardly Arthur." Jon forcibly grabbed the collar of the criminal. "As a member of the Cult Mo, Mordred should always be drawn as the one on top!"

"Your guilt will be judged by our Japanese department as you have dishonored their sacred doujin arts." He faced a group of cultists wearing the Japan armbands.

"Kare o korose!" The Japanese cultists demanded. Jon nodded his head in acknowledgement.

"For your crimes, you will be forced to watch Bill Nye the Science Guy on repeat for two days." Jon sentenced the accused.

"That's not so bad." The criminal whispered.

"With the audio of Clannad: After Story in the background." Jon sadistically finished.

"No. Please. This is too cruel."

"Enjoy yourself crying over an old man talking about science. Take him away." His fellow cultists obeyed and dragged the criminal to his punishment. The sinner cried for mercy until his voice became too distant to be audible. The rest dispersed to enjoy the festival that was occurring.
