Chapter 10: Trial and Error Part 3
Game On!
Syrus: 8000
Embust: 8000
"You may have the first move."
"Gladly. To start, I set one monster face down and one card face down. I end my turn."
"Very well, my turn. I also set one monster face down, as well as the field spell Chorus of the Sanctuary!"
The small meadow around them changed into a large rose garden, with the soft humming of angels in the distance.
"As long as we remain in this sanctuary, all monsters in defense mode gain 500 defense points. Lastly, I'll set one card face down and end my turn."
Off to the sidelines, their audience couldn't help but take note of the slow pace.
"Gee, slow start to the duel, huh?"
"Just you wait, Chazz. Something tells me they're just getting warmed up."
"Alright, Embust. My turn, I draw!"
If he played Chorus of the Sanctuary, I'll bet he's got a high defense monster waiting to deal massive damage to me. Well, won't he be in for a big surprise.
"I summon Drillroid in attack mode (1600/1600)! Next, I flip over my Gyroid (1000/1000)! Now Drllroid, attack his face-down"
The cartoon drll whirred to life before ramming into the monster, revealing it to be Aussa the Earth Charmer (500/1500-2000).
"Too bad, Syrus. Looks like I'll be taking your Drillroid."
But Syrus wasn't worried. n fact, he had expected something like this, which is why he played Drllroid.
"Actually, you won't. When Drillroid attacks a defense position monster, he automatically destroys it no questions asked."
"What?"
Sure enough, the spellcaster was destroyed before she could cast a single spell.
"Now Gyroid, attack Embust directly!"
The guardian raised his arm to shield himself as the cartoon helicopter spun its blades wildly, creating a massive dust storm that nearly knocked him off his feet.
Embust: 7000
"I'll end my turn with another face down and end my turn."
The guardian nodded as he drew his card, contemplating his next move. Although what he was planning could be costly, it was necessary if he was going to win.
"I summon Injection Fairy Lily (400/1500) in attack mode!"
A small fairy in a nurse's outfit carrying a giant needle appeared on Embusts's field.
"Now my Lily, attack his Drillroid directly! At this moment, her effect activates, allowing me to pay 2000 life points (7000-5000) to have her gain 3000 attack points (400-3400)!"
But once again, Syrus was prepared.
"I know what you're trying to do, but it won't work! I activate my trap card Shift, letting me redirect your attack to Gyroid! And I'll chain it with Suercharge, letting me to draw two cards."
The fairy swerved towards the helicopter and struck it with her needle, though thanks to Gyroid's effect it merely dented its blades.
Syrus: 5600
"Why would Syrus do that? He only wound up taking more damage."
"Strategy."
Everyone turned to Bastion, who was studying the duel intensely.
"What do you mean, Bastion?"
"What I mean, Hassleberry, is that by taking more damage now he kept his opponent on edge for later. Think about it, his move the previous turn was a single face down, which had its defense bolstered by his field spell. Assuming his deck relies on high defense monsters, or monsters you want in defense position, then Drillroid is a very lethal threat, meaning Embust will want it gone as soon as possible. But by keeping Drillroid on the field, Embust will have to plan his moves very carefully."
"Oh, so he's planning ahead?"
"Exactly."
"Could you run that by me one more time?"
Everyone groaned at Jaden's cluelessness. While he was an expert duelist, his mind was lacking when it came to other matters. Back on the dueling field, Embust grunted at his plan failing, but contained his composure.
"Hmm, I see. I'll set one card face down and end my turn."
"Then I guess its my turn. And to start, I summon Submarineroid and have him attack you directly!"
Embust grunted in pain as Syrus's submarine made his sneak attack, tossing him to the floor.
Embust: 4200
As Embust picked himself up, Submarineroid switched to defense mode.
"I'll end with one card face down. You're up."
Embust sighed, knowing that he was in trouble. If he went after Submarineroid, Drillroid could destroy any monster he put in defense mode. But if he went after Drillroid, Submarineroid could attack him directly, leaving him with not enough life points to protect Fairy Lily. He knew what had to do. He just hoped Syrus would take the bait.
"I activate the spell card Advanced Ritual Art! This card allows me to ritual summon any ritual monster simply by sending normal monsters from my deck to the graveyard whose total levels equal the monster I want to bring out. So I'll send Archfiend Marmot of Nefariousness and Gigobyte to the graveyard to Ritual Summon Elemental Mistress Doriado (1200/1400-1900! With one card face down, I end my turn."
Syrus nodded and drew his next card, silently contemplating his next move.
I could use Power Bond, but If that facedown is what I think it is, I don't want to risk it. So instead I'll use...
"I activate Vehicroid Connection Zone to fuse the Steamroid in my hand with the Drillroid and Submarineroid on my field to Fusion Summon Super Vehicroid Jumbo Drill (3000/2000)! Next, I activate Limiter Removal, doubling the attack of all my machine type monsters (3000-6000) (1000-2000). Attack his Doriado!"
The massive drill spun and whirred, launching itself at the female spellcasster. Embust smirked, Syrus had done exactly as he had wanted.
"I activate the trap card Fuh-Rin-Kan-Zan! Since I control a fire, wind, Earth, and Water monster, I can activate one of 4 effects, and I choose to destroy all of your monsters."
"But he only has two monster! An Earth monster and a Light Monster."
"Wrong, Jaden. While its on the field, its treated as all 4 attributes that he needs."
The trap card released high voltage bolts of lightning that shocked Syrus's monsters, destroying Gyroid. However, when it tried to fry Jumbo Drill, the bolts bounced off it harmlessly.
"Sorry, but a Vehicroid summoned by Connection Zone can't be destroyed by card effects, so I guess your Doriado isn't safe!"
Doriado let out a shirek as the drill rammed into her, ripping her to pixels.
Embust: 100
"Next, I activate Call of the Haunted, bringing back Steamroid! Attack his Injection Fairy Lily and end this duel!"
"I activate Spiritual Earth Art, Kurogane! By tributing Injection Fairy Lily, I can special summon a different level 4 or lower Earth monster from my graveyard, and I choose Aussa the Earth Charmer in defense mode (1500-2000)!"
"Don't think that'll be enough to stop me! When Steamroid attacks a monster, he gains 500 attack points (1800-2300)!"
The steam train easily ran over the Earth Charmer, though at least Embust's life points were safe.
"I'll end my turn there."
Sighing, Embust drew his last card. There was nothing he could do to stop Syrus's victory, but he wasn't going down without a fight.
"I summon Familiar Possesed- Aussa (1850/1500). Attack his Steamroid (1800-1300)!"
With a barrage of rocks, the weakened steam train was reduced to nothing but scrap.
Syrus: 5050
"I'll end my turn there."
"This duel is over. Super Vehicroid Jumbo Drill, end this duel!"
Embust closed his eyes in acceptance as his monster was destroyed and his life points hit zero.
"Well done, traveler."
Embust: 0000
Syrus wins!
With a sigh of relief, Syrus deactivated his duel disk as his friends came up and congratulated him.
"All right, Syrus!"
"Way to play!"
"Way to not lose and doom us all."
"Chazz!"
"What? That was a compliment!"
Embust slowly made his way over to the group.
"Congratulations, travelers. I knew you could do it. As proof of your victory, the pathway shall be revealed."
With that, the gate opened, bathing the group in light. Looking at eachother, they slowly approached.
"You guys ready?"
"Ready to go home, thats for sure."
With that, the group of six entered the gate, hoping that it was their way home. Embust watched them leave.
"Good luck, travelers. You're going to need it."
A/N: And the first duel world is done! Sorry I sort of sped through it, but the duelists in world 1 aren't that strong. The hardest is Knopse and Nightmare Penguin, and that's only because of stall and bounce tactics. Next time, the World of Sunlight!
