Bloody Mary Part 2
The next morning Brie, Elena and Dean spend most of their time researching with a couple of books and notebooks laying on the small motel table. Sam was still sleeping, no one wanted to wake him up so he could rest as he wasn't getting much sleep recently. The room was quiet until Sam woke up with a gasp, Dean looked at him to make sure he was ok. Brie and Elena took a quick glance before going back to their notes. "Why'd you guys let me fall asleep?" Sam asked quietly as he stated at the ceiling. Brie felt bad and wanted to help him, but didn't want to intrude on his personal space.
"Cause I'm an awesome brother. So what did you dream about?" Dean says as he looks up from his book.
"Lollipops and candy canes" Sam says sarcastically, obviously not wanting to talk about it "Did you find anything?"
"Oh besides a whole new level of frustration" Dean begins as Sam sits up. "No. I've looked at everything. A few local women, a Laura and a Catherine committed suicide in front of a mirror, and a giant mirror fell on a guy named Dave, but uh, no Mary" Elena says sighing as there was still no progress from where they were yesterday.
Sam falls back on the bed "Maybe we just haven't found it yet"
"I've also been searching for strange deaths in the area, you know the eyeball bleeding, that sort of thing. There's nothing. Whatever's happening here, maybe it just ain't Mary"
Sam's cell phone rings. He answers it "Hello?" They do not hear who is calling, but a look of concern comes across Sam's face. He hangs up the phone "We gotta go"
"Whats going on" Brie says finally chiming into the conversation as she jumps up from her spot.
"That was Charlie" Sam says putting on his jacket "Her friend Jill was found dead"
Charlie is sitting there and Dean is sitting on the back of it, and Sam is standing in front of her next to Elena and Brie who was sitting at the other side of Charlie. She was crying as she explained how they found Jill "And they found her on the bathroom floor. And her eyes. They were gone". Sam apologises as she continues on with her story "And she said it" Dean looks up at Sam "I heard her say it. But it couldn't be because of that. I'm insane, right?"
"No, you're not insane" Brie says confirming her fears.
Charlie puts her head in her hands "Oh God, that makes me feel so much worse"
"Look. We think something's happening here. Something that can't be explained" Sam tried his hardest on how he could explain it to her.
"And we're gonna stop it but we could use your help." Dean said looking at Charlie.
Charlie agrees to help them as she took them to Jill's house so they could look around. Charlie comes in and locks the door. She then goes over to the window and opens it, where Brie, Elena, Sam and Dean are waiting to enter. Sam enters first and Dean throws him a duffel bag. "What did you tell Jill's mom?" Sam says as sets it on the bed and starts going through it
"Just that I needed some time alone with Jill's pictures and things" Charlie explained as Sam pulls something out of the bag and Dean shuts the curtains "I hate lying to her"
"Trust us, this is for the greater good. Hit the lights" Dean says to her as she does so.
Charlie goes over to turn off the lights "What are you guys looking for?"
"We'll let you know as soon as we find it" Dean said turning on the EMP reader.
Sam has a digital camera ready, and hands it to Dean "Hey, night vision" Dean turns on the night vision for him "Perfect" The digital camera is aimed at Dean.
"Do I look like Paris Hilton?" He asked posing a bit for the camera. Charlie snickered a bit and Elena smiled at his goofiness. Brie just rolled her eyes as she still wasn't talking to Dean.
Sam walks away with the camera. He opens Jill's closet door and begins filming around the mirror "So I don't get it. I mean the first victim didn't summon Mary, and the second victim did. How's she choosing them?"
"Beats me" Sam closes the closet door "I want to know why Jill said it in the first place"
Charlie explained "It's just a joke"
"Yeah well somebody's gonna say it again, it's just a matter of time" Sam is in the bathroom filming around the mirror when he stops and sees trickles of something running out from behind the mirror. "Hey." They all turn around and look at Sam "There's a black light in the trunk, right?" Sam has carried the mirror out to Jill's bed and lays it on the bed upside down. Dean throws him a black light. Sam peels off the brown paper that is on the back of the mirror. Sam shines the black light over the back of the mirror and we see a handprint, and the words "Gary Bryman."
"Gary Bryman?" Charlie wondered.
"You know who that is?" Sam asked her.
Charlie shakes her head "No"
"Okay I'll go and find out who Gray Bryman is" Sam says walking towards the window.
"Ill come with" Brie offers as she didn't want to be left with Dean. She stands up and walks towards Sam "Elena can stay here with Dean and Charlie"
Elena nods as she sits down on the bed next to Charlie as Brie and Sam went to find out who the boy was. They two met up with them at a bench just outside the library. "So, Gary Bryman was an 8 year old boy. Two years ago, he was killed in a hit and run. The car was described as a black Toyota Camry, but nobody got the plates or saw the driver." Sam explained.
"Oh, my God." Charlie said in shock.
"What?" Brie asked her.
"Jill drove that car." Charlie explained. Sam and Dean looked each other.
"We need to get back to your friend Donna's house." Dean said.
Sam and Dean are hunched over the back of the mirror with a black light. There is a handprint on it, and the words "Linda Shoemaker"
"Why are you asking me this?"
"Look, we're sorry, but it's important" Sam says trying to persuade Donna.
"Yeah. Linda's my mom okay? She overdosed on sleeping pills, it was an accident, and that's it. I think you should leave" Donna says before she runs upstairs.
"Oh my God. Do you really think her dad could've killed her mom?" Charlie asks. "I think I should stick around"
Dean nods his head "All right. Whatever you do, don't"
Charlie interrupts him "Believe me, I won't say it."
Dean was on the laptop printing some papers out. "Hold on, are you really doing a nationwide search?" Sam asked as Brie and Elena watched him work.
"Yep. The NCIC, the FBI database at this point any Mary who died in front of a mirror is good enough for me" Dean explained.
"But if she's haunting the town, she should have died in the town" Sam says sitting down on the bed next to Brie.
Dean looked up at Sam who was now next to Brie. He noticed how close they were sitting next to each other. He looks back at the laptop "I'm telling you there's nothing local, I've checked. So unless you got a better idea"
"The way Mary's choosing her victims, it seems like there's a pattern. With mister Shoemaker and Jill's hit and run" Brie said. "Both had secrets where people died"
"Right. I mean there's a lot of folklore about mirrors-that they reveal all your lies, all your secrets, that they're a true reflection of your soul, which is why it's bad luck to break them"Sam says.
"Yeah so maybe if you've got a secret, I mean like a really nasty one where someone died, then Mary sees it, and punishes you for it" Dean said.
"Whether you're the one that summoned her or not" Elena says.
"Take a look at this" Dean points to picture of a woman laying by a mirror in a puddle of blood. Dean prints out another picture and hands it to Sam. The picture is of a handprint and the letters "Tre"
"Looks like the Same handprint" Brie looks over Sam's shoulder to look at the picture as Elena looks at the picture on the computer screen.
"Her name was Mary Worthington an unsolved murder in Fort Wayne, Indiana" Dean explained.
They decided to drive to Fort Wayne to find out what they could about Mary Worthington. Dean stopped at the house of the retired detective who investigated her murder. "I was on the job for 35 years, detective for most of that. Now everybody packs it in with a few loose ends, but the Mary Worthington murder, that one still gets me." He explained as themas they were stood in his living-room.
"What exactly happened?" Dean asked him.
"You four said you were reporters." He said looking at them all.
"We know Mary was 19, lived by herself. She won a few beauty contests, dreamt of getting out of Indiana, being an actress. And we know, the night of March 29th, someone broke into her apartment and murdered her, cut out her eyes with a knife." Sam explained to the man.
"That's right." He said.
"See, sir when we ask you what happened, we wanna know what you think happened," Brie said to the man.
"Technically I'm not supposed to have a copy of this." He said pulling some files and showed them an image of the crime scene. "Now, see that there, that T-R-E? I think Mary was trying to spell out the name of her killer."
"You know who it was?" Sam asked.
"Not for sure. But there was a local man, a surgeon, Trevor Sampson. And I think he cut her up good." He explained.
"Any idea why he would do something like that?" Elena asked.
"Her diary mentioned a man she was seeing. She called him by his initial, T. Well, her last entry, she was going to tell T's wife about their affair." He explained.
"Yeah, but how to you know it was Sampson who killed her?" Dean asked.
"It's hard to say. But the way her eyes were cut out, it was almost professional." He replied.
"But you could never prove it?" Dean asked.
"No, no prints, no witnesses. He was meticulous."He replied.
"Is he still alive?" Brie asked him.
"Nope. If you ask me, Mary spent her last living moments trying to expose this guy's secret. But she never could." He explained.
"Where was she buried?" Sam asked him.
"She wasn't she was cremated." He replied.
"What about that mirror?"Dean asked. "That's not in some evidence locker somewhere, is it?"
"Uh, no. It was returned to Mary's family a long time ago." He explained.
"You have the names of her family by any chance?" Sam asked him.
They left his house to drive back to Toledo and the way back Sam called Mr. Worthington to ask about the mirror. "Oh, really? Ah, that's too bad Mr. Worthington. I would have paid a lot for that mirror. Okay, well maybe next time. All right, thanks."
"So?" Dean asked after Sam hung up the phone.
"That was Mary's brother. The mirror was in the family for years, until he sold it one week ago to a store called estate antiques, a store in Toledo." Sam explained.
"So wherever the mirror goes, Mary goes?" Brie asked.
"Her spirit's definitely tied up in it somehow." Sam said.
"Isn't there an old superstition that says mirrors can capture spirits?" Dean asked.
"Yeah, there is. When someone would die in a house, people would cover up the mirrors so the ghost wouldn't get trapped." Sam explained.
"So Mary dies, and it draws her spirit." Dean said glancing at Dean while he drove.
"Still, how is she able to move through so many different mirrors?" Elena asked leaning forward from the backseat.
"I don't know, but if the mirror is the source then I say we find it, and smash it." Dean suggested. It sounded like the simplest solution.
"Yeah, I don't know. Maybe." Sam said wondering if it would work. Everyone went quiet until Sam's phone rang. "Hello? Charlie?"
Charlie is sitting on the bed with her head on her knees and Sam and Dean have all of the curtains drawn shut, and are throwing sheets over the mirrors, or facing them to the wall or floor.
Sam sits next to Charlie "Hey, hey it's ok. Hey, you can open up your eyes Charlie. It's okay, all right?" Charlie looks up slowly "Now listen. You're gonna stay right here on this bed, and you're not gonna look at glass, or anything else that has a reflection, okay? And as long as you do that, she cannot get you"
"But I can't keep that up forever. I'm gonna die, aren't I?"
Sam shakes his head "No.Not anytime soon"
Dean sits on the bed too "All right Charlie. We need to know what happened"
"We were in the bathroom. Donna said it"
"That's not what we're talking about. Something happened, didn't it? In your life a secret where someone got hurt. Can you tell us about it?"
Charlie sighed "I had this boyfriend. I loved him. But he kind of scared me too, you know? And one night, at his house, we got in this fight. Then I broke up with him, and he got upset, and he said he needed me and he loved me, and he said "Charlie, if you walk out that door right now, I'm gonna k!ll myself." And you know what I said? I said "Go ahead." And I left. How could I say that? How could I leave him like that? I just I didn't believe him, you know? I should have" She puts her face back on her knees and starts crying again.
It was pitch black outside as Dean drove the Impala down the road. "You know her boyfriend killing himself, that's not really Charlie's fault." Dean said as he watched the road.
"You know as well as I do spirits don't exactly see shades of gray, Dean. Charlie had a secret, someone died, that's good enough for Mary" Sam stated. "You know, I've been thinking. It might not be enough to just smash that mirror"
"Why, what do you mean?" Dean asked wondering what Sam was thinking.
"Well Mary's hard to pin down, right? I mean she moves around from mirror to mirror so who's to say that she's not just gonna keep hiding in them forever? So maybe we should try to pin her down, you know, summon her to her mirror and then smash it"
"Well who's gonna summon her?" Dean asks.
"I will. She'll come after me" Sam offered.
"You know what, that's it" Dean pulls the car over "This is about Jessica, isn't it? You think that's your dirty little secret that you killed her somehow? Sam, this has got to stop, man. I mean, the nightmares and calling her name out in the middle of the night it's gonna kill you. Now listen to me It wasn't your fault. If you wanna blame something, then blame the thing that killed her. Or hell, why don't you take a swing at me? I mean I'm the one that dragged you away from her in the first place"
"I don't blame you" Sam says.
"Well you shouldn't blame yourself, because there's nothing you could've done"
"I could've warned her." Sam replied.
"About what? You didn't know what was gonna happen. And, besides all of this isn't a secret. I mean, me, Elena and Brie know all about. It's not gonna work with Mary anyway." Dean said.
"No you don't." Sam said.
"I don't know what?" Dean said. You didn't think it could get even more tense in this car but it did.
"You don't know all about it. I haven't told you everything." Sam answered.
"What are you talking about?" Dean asked.
"It wouldn't really be a secret if I told you, would it?" Sam said.
"No, no I don't like it. It's not gonna happen forget it." Dean said.
"Dean, that girl back there is going to die unless we do something about it. And you know what? Who knows how many more people are gonna die after that? Now, we're doing this. You've got to let me do this." Sam Explained.
Reluctantly Dean agreed to his plan as they walked in the empty store the moonlight shining through the windows gave it a spooky vibe. It didn't help that there went mirrors everywhere. "Well, that's just great." Dean said as he pulled out the photo of the mirror Mary was killed in front of to compare. "Alright, let's start looking." You all split up and looked around the store. Brie noticed Sam go into the other room while Elena and Dean continued to look in the front room. "Maybe they've already sold it."
Sam's flashlight stops on the mirror "I don't think so"
Dean walks over to him and pulls out the picture again to compare. It is the mirror "That's it" he sighs "You sure about this?
Sam hands Dean the flashlight "Bloody Mary. Bloody Mary" He looks at Dean who gives him an unsure look back. Sam picks up the crowbar "Bloody Mary"
Dean turns to see a light coming through the store "I'll go check that out. Stay here, be careful"Sam readies the crowbar again "Smash anything that moves" Elena leaves Brie and Sam to go help Dean as they both look around at the mirrors surrounding they waiting for her to appear. Sam then swung his crowbar into a mirror shattering it to pieces. Then Brie saw her appear in a mirror behind him and smashed her own crowbar against that mirror. They kept shattering mirrors trying to get her to go to her own mirror.
"Come on, come to this one," Brie heard Sam say under his breath. Sam stopped moving and dropped his crowbar, Brie then went up to him to see if he was ok. Brie saw tears of blood running down his face. Brie looked at the mirror and saw not Sam's reflection, but the reflection of a woman. "You killed them!" she said menacingly. "They died because you abandoned them!" She screamed. Brie's vision blurred and it felt look she were being stabbed in her eyes as blood was running down her cheeks. Brie fell to the ground and she cried out in pain as memories of her family and friends flashed through her mind. Then she suddenly heard the sounded of glass shattering. When she opened her eyes she saw Dean standing next the broken mirror.
"God, Are you okay?" Dean asked as he looked at the blood on Sam's face, Brie could easily see how much Sam meant to Dean. "Come on, let's go," Dean grunted as he helped Sam get up up. Brie got up with the help of Elena and went into the front room to wait for them to join them. When Brie heard grunting and groaning she peeked in to see Bloody Mary standing over them as their eyes started bleeding out. Brie grabs the closest mirror to her and put it between the boys and Mary so her reflection was cast back on her. She stared at the mirror until she started choking and then melted into shards of glass. After that Brie slammed the mirror against the floor shattering it to pieces. The boys got up and looked at Brie and each other. "Damn, guys that's gotta be what, six hundred years of bad luck?"
On their way out of town they decided to drop Charlie off at her house and say their farewells. Brie and Elena got out the car to let Sam and Dean talk to Charlie.
"So what happened back there?" Elena asked Brie.
"Well we know Mary comes after people who's death are their fault. I guess I always blamed myself for yours" Brie explained.
"What do you mean?" Elena asks as she didn't understand why Brie was blaming herself.
"That night you died. On the bridge. I was driving that night. Rebekah came out from nowhere and I swerved the car into the lake. I should of been paying attention and if I was then you wouldn't of turned" Brie looks around and whispers "into a vampire"
Elena shakes her head "Rebekah killed me Brianna, not you. So don't ever blame yourself for that"
"Well if I'm not to blame for your death, then who's am I? Mary came for me so I must be responsible for someones" Brie argued.
Elena shrugs her shoulders "We've seen a lot of people die Brie. So it's hard to pin point one. But if I was stood next to Sam instead of you then she would of came to me too" Brie nodded as she turned around to see Charlie still in the backseat of the impala.
They could hear Charlie talking to Sam and Dean "So this is really over?" She asked looking at Sam and Dean.
"Yeah, it's over," Dean replied as he nodded his head at her.
"Thank you," she said as she shook Dean's hand and got out of the Impala. As she started walking towards her house Sam called out to her.
"Charlie!" Sam called out causing her to turn around. "Your boyfriend's death...You really should try to forgive yourself. No matter what you did, you probably couldn't have stopped it. Sometimes bad things just happen." Brie and Elena walked to Charlie and both gave her a hug goodbye before getting into the impala.
"That's good advice," Dean said as he patted Sam on the shoulder. They smiled at each other as Dean started the Impala and drove away. Brie laid down in the backseat onto Elena's lap to rest her eyes after everything that happened "Hey Sam? Now that this is all over, I want you to tell me what that secret was."
"Look your my brother and I'd die for you. But there are some thing I need to keep to myself." Sam said before he looks out the window and sees Jessica in a white dress on the street corner standing next to a light pole, as they turn the corner she disappears behind the pole, and doesn't see her again
