-One Day Later, Cyclones Meeting Room-
"Thanks God the draft is over and done with. Now we can get back to focusing on the upcoming season." Jamal said with a sigh of relief as he and his fellow senior Cyclones officials could be found having a meeting in Marty's office.
"I'm also happy the draft is over, but now a new challenge begins." Clint informed Jamal as he kept returning very important text messages to many subordinates on the team before continuing the conversation. "Signing our draft picks could be a nightmare... well the two first round picks." Clint clarified due to a look from Jamal and Mary.
"How goes the negotiations with Avery and Chance's agents?" Marty asked as he took a sip from a bottle of water as he awaited the answer from his GM.
"We're nearing a deal with both of them. Although I wish we had drafted Chance in the second round, where he was projected to go." Clint admitted to his boss, which earned a confused look from Marty.
"Probably wouldn't have been available in the second round. After all, Cincinnati was in need of a quarterback. And with Miami's 'Kelly' James going to Houston, Cincinnati would have taken the second best QB on the board, that being Chance. I'm glad we got arguably the top back in the draft, and a young quarterback who can learn under Grant." Marty said calmly as he took another sip from his bottled water.
"Nevertheless, it's going to take a lot of money to sign them both to long term deals–"
"Unless we sign only one of them to a long term deal..." Jamal interrupted, earning a confused look from Clint and Marty. "The Leagues standard rookie contract is a minimal of two to four years, with a max being five. While it's true we use more money on a shorter contract in the short haul, it might be beneficial to sign only one of them to a longer contract to save some money in the long haul–"
"Or we could sign them both to an equal contract, and secure two big name draftees–" Clint interrupted Jamal, only to be interrupted by Marty.
"I see both arguments here. However we don't know that we've drafted superstars. They could turn out to be busts fro all we know." Mary said wisely as he paused to take a drink before continuing. "We can have them work out before training camp, and then decide which one looks better. And then we'll decide on the contract negotiations–"
"No offense Marty, I'll do my job and sign them both as I see fit since I'm the General Manger–" the interruptions continued as Jamal now spoke up.
"But he's the owner, and we both answer to him." Jamal argued, earning a look from Clint. But to both their surprises, Marty just took another sip of his drink before speaking up.
"I'll trust you Clint..."
-Blitz League Broadcast Booth-
"Well another draft is officially in the books as of early this morning, and we have a lot to discuss today." Chris began as he paused to take a breath. "The big story of last night is that the Cyclones traded down from number one to number three, passing on Lance McCain, and instead taking Virginia tailback Avery Ferguson. Johnny what do you think about the move?" Chris asked is colleague as the camera pulled out and showed his fellow analyst.
"Well Chris, once you get past the shock that the Cyclones passed on a two way player, I personally think that the Cyclones filled a big hole on the roster." Johnny said as the footage now showed highlights from Avery's career with the Cavaliers. "Avery was a very good open field runner, he honestly reminds me a lot of Daunell Sullivan from the Houston Riders. He has the durability to carry the ball almost every down, and he's electric when he gets into the open field–"
"We're in agreement on Ferguson." Chris interrupted with an apologetic smile. "But what do you think of the Cyclones second first round pick: quarterback Chance Wolfe of Notre Dame?" Chris asked as Chance's picture was now showed on the television.
"Let's be fair and start with the pros." Johnny began as the tv now showed highlights from Chance's playing days at Notre Dame. "Chance has good awareness in the pocket, and his accuracy on short to mid-range throws is over 70 percent. However he's not very mobile, and he's by all accounts a pure pocket passer. He rarely extends the play by using his legs. And unlike Ferguson, he's only a two year starter, as opposed to Avery starting all four years. I hope Grant Tanner stays healthy in San Diego, 'cause you might not win many games with Chance Wolfe..."
