AN: Here is the next chapter of Comeback Captains. I decided to skip to opening day since it was easier, and more fun to write. Hope ya'll enjoy.
-Opening Day: San Diego Cyclones at Washington Redhawks-
"Good afternoon and welcome inside the broadcast booth. I'm Chris Benson, and I'm bringing you opening day here in the U.S. Capital, as the Division 3 favorite Redhawks... take on last seasons Division 3 cellar dweller... the San Diego Cyclones." Chris said as both teams logos flashed across the screen. "After the Redhawks where embarrassed last season with a 2-5 record, they now find themselves back in Division 3. Good news is that they re-signed Clayton Wescott after his demanded release from the Los Angeles Riot, and needless to say, he wants to get back to Division 2. Jenny what's the mood inside the Redhawks locker room?" Chris asked as the camera now showed reporter Jenny standing outside the closed doors of the Redhawks locker room.
"Thanks Chris. Like you said the fans, and the Redhawks are thrilled to have Clayton back in Washington D.C. where they feel he belongs. Clayton was out of football last season due to the scandal involving the Riot and former Blitz League commissioner Hanson. While Clayton has been cleared of all chargers, and promptly demanded a release once the Riot where indicted in the scandal, the fans here want to see if he's still got it after missing an entire season. Only time will tell if this young gunslinger still has his touch." Jenny said as the camera switched back to Chris in the booth.
"And for news on the Cyclones, we turn now to Jasmine." Chris said as the camera switched from him to Jasmine, who was covering the Cyclones looker room.
"Thanks Chris. Despite a 1-6 inaugural season last year, the Cyclones are convinced that their moves in the draft and off-season will put some pieces of the puzzle together and translate to more wins. Owner Marty Rains is extremely confident with the moves his team has made leading up to the season. Just to recap: they signed Nightmare Wide Receiver Carter Langford, they signed future Hall Of Fame Linebacker Amos Newell to start alongside Defensive Rookie Of The Year Robert McNeill. Last but not least they drafted Avery Ferguson with the third pick in the draft. There is certainly reason for optimism in San Diego...
-Meanwhile, Cyclones Locker Room-
"Listen up everyone." Grant barked as he silenced the entire locker room with his commanding voice. "Last season was a disgrace. We went 1-6, the fans where angry and booing us, and the rest of Division 3 used us as their personal punching bag." Grant said angrily as some of the players held their heads low with shame. "I was embarrassed and you all should be as well." Grant said as he slammed his lockers metal door. "But... it's a brand new season. Last season is behind us, and now is our chance to do something. To prove to ourselves and the league that we are division contenders. I believe in the talent that this team possesses. It's time to prove it." Grant said as he stomped his left foot... the entire team followed suit. "You want to win!" Grant hollered.
"Yea!" the rest of the team answered.
"Let's make our owner, and our community proud! We the best on three... one... two... three–"
"We the best!" the entire team echoed as everyone began hooting and hollering as they all stood up and eagerly left the locker room and began marching down the tunnel towards the field.
-Later-
"Very few things beat opening day." Marty said with a laugh as he could be found on the Cyclones sideline talking to coach Dungy.
"I couldn't agree more." Dungy replied with a big smile on his face. A few seconds later the Redhawks ran out of their tunnel out unto the field, earning cheers from all Redhawks fans, especially since Clayton Wescott has led them out of the tunnel. A few minutes later, the Cyclones came marching out of their tunnel. Boos erupted from most fans in attendance. But to everyone's surprise, the noise did not seem to bother the Cyclones...
"First down for Washington after a dismal kickoff return pinned them at their own 15 yard line." the Redhawks radio announcer said as Clayton lead the offense unto the field. "After what the Cyclones showed last season on offense, two touchdowns might be all Clayton needs to put this game out of reach" the announcer joked as Clayton broke the huddle and lined up under center. "Clayton takes the snap, he rolls out and... no he's...
"He's sacked on the play by Amos Newell! Welcome to San Diego Amos Newell... boy judging from Clayton being slow to get up, that one looked like it hurt... The Cyclones radio announcer informed all his fans listening. Three plays later the Redhawks where forced to punt. "Grant Tanner leads the new look Cyclones offense unto the field. Carter Langford is the lone receiver on the left, Avery Ferguson is in the backfield. Tanner takes the snap, he hands the ball to Ferguson, who starts dashing to his right... wait... it's a trick play as he tosses the ball back to Grant, he fires deep down the left... HE'S GOT LANGFORD WIDE OPEN AND HE... MAKES THE CATCH, 30, 25, 20 GOODBYE DEFENSE, TOUCHDOWN SAN DIEGO!" the announcer couldn't help but shout as Carter Langford was greeted by Grant in the end-zone as they both exchanged a high powered high five.
-Post Game, Cyclones Locker Room-
The mood in the Cyclones locker room was ecstatic to say the least. Not only had they secured the franchises' second win, but they had beat the Redhawks, and beat them good, to a score of 38-9.
"That's how you whoop some ass!" Amos said as he and Robert exchanged a hug, seeing as how the duo had combined for three of the Cyclones' five sacks on the day. While the defensive players where celebrating holding the Redhawks to 9 points, that was nothing compared to the celebration that Avery was leading for most of the offensive players. Having rushed for over 150 yards and two touchdowns in his League debut, Avery was grinning from ear to ear.
"What the hell are you all celebrating for?!" Grant asked as he emerged from the showers. The scowl on his face silenced all festivities. "So what if we won on opening day... we did that last year, and we lost six straight to finish the year!" Grant said angrily. "I'm not going to celebrate until we're all dancing as Division 1 champions. We're heading to the Baltimore Dome next week for a date with the Bearcats. I need everyone to stay as focused as they where today... if we do that... nobody in this league will be able to stop us..."
