"Scalewalkers"

Summary: In short? 'Dragons' version of "Wolfwalkers". Megan's uncle, Nicholas, is a dragon hunter who has been summoned to the island of Berk in order to rid the village of the dragons that live in the woods beyond their walls. Wanting to help out her uncle, Megan and her two friends manage to slip outside of the village. After splitting up, Megan soon encounters two kids-Hiccup and Astrid, living among the wild dragons. They and the flock were in the process of leaving Berk, when Hiccup's mother disappeared. Megan discovers the world of 'Scalewalkers'-people who are able to talk to dragons and even turn into dragons while they sleep. After seeing their way of life, Megan and her friends agree to help Hiccup and Astrid. But Megan soon finds her relationship with her uncle put to the test when she is transformed into the very thing he has been tasked to destroy.

Everything that isn't mine belongs to their respective creators, owners, companies, so on and so forth. 'How To Train Your Dragon' goes to DreamWorks Animation and Cressida Cowell, 'Wolfwalkers' goes to Cartoon Saloon, and 'Xenoblade Chronicles' goes to Monolith Soft and Nintendo. (I'll explain this last one at the end!)

Prologue:

Long ago in the islands of the Barbaric Archipelago, there lived a tribe with the power to heal those who were sick or wounded. When outsiders came to the islands to tell the people of their civilized, religious ways, the tribe began to drift away from the villagers. They would not give up their old ways.

When the outsiders would preach to the villagers, the tribe would call out from the forest like dragons-To remind them that there was another, older wisdom deep within the woods. Some say they were blessed by these holy men, others say that they had been cursed.

Still, for ever more, the tribe would walk the earth by day as humans and roam the forest by night as dragons. Leaving their human forms behind, any harm or good that would befall them as dragons, they would feel in their waking forms as well. They were a proud breed, living among the wild dragons, and keeping the peace between humans and the forest. They would come to be known as "Scalewalkers".

But the lands outside the Archipelago craved its wealth and took most of its forests. With the woods slowly disappearing, the Scalewalkers began to dwindle until only three remained-A mother, her son and her son's betrothed.

Soon a new leader had come to power. Lord Grisely swore to tame the Barbaric Archipelago far more than anyone had ever managed to. He commanded for the forests to be felled and the dragons destroyed. He brought with him an army to subjugate the villagers of Berk and impose order that had been resisted for so many years by force.

Among his men was a dragon hunter, Nicholas McMartin, along with a young maid, a Nopon boy and his orphaned niece, Megan.

This is Berk.

People say that this island is about twelve days north of hopeless and maybe a few degrees south of freezing to death, give or take. Even though it's located solidly on the Meridian of Misery, it is home to a wealth of resources, with seas surrounding it, overflowing with fish and lush forests filled with animals and plant life. Despite the fact that it snows nine months of the year and hails the other three, it could actually be somewhat pleasant.

The only real problem...is the pests. It is here where the story begins.

Outside of the village, a group of woodcutters were at the edge of the forest hard at work chopping down the trees.

After felling a particularly large tree, they had begun to haul it away.

"Phew..." A tall, burly man with a mustache tied into braids, some thin strands of blond-ish hair tucked under a helmet hiding his balding head, a hook replacing his left hand, and a peg leg in place of his right leg wiped a bit of sweat from his brow. Simply put, he's called Gobber.

By his side was a small, round, furry creature with peach colored fur with a white spot on its belly. It had brown eyes and a curly tuft of fur sticking out of the top of its head. It had two flaps around its neck with white fur tipping them. Finally, it wore a forest green vest with a beige skirt, a bag by its side and a lanturn in its right paw. This is a creature called a Nopon, and her name is Fuufuun.

The Nopon were friendly creatures that had come to the Archipelago some centuries ago. They were the type of being that could get along with anyone and everyone. Some people saw them as too cutesy and bottomless pits when it came to food, but Nopon were known to be crafty, hardy and even cunning in some cases.

As the men hauled off the tree-slowly, as it was rather large-Fuufuun's ears perked up at a sound. "Meh meh?" She turned to the woods and began to scan the tree line.

Gobber and the others soon took notice of this. "Huh?"

Soon they heard it. Growling, coming from the woods.

Fuufuun held up the lanturn nervously.

In the shadow of the trees, two glowing yellow circles appeared.

The woodcutters softly gasped. They could feel that something was staring right back at them.

More glowing circles started to appear in the darkness as the growling intensified.

The glowing circles were actually eyes and the things that owned the eyes stepped into view.

"Dr-Dragons!" Fuufuun exclaimed in fright.

A flock of dragons emerged from the woods, growling and snarling. Their teeth and claws beared at the woodcutters.

One was a Deadly Nadder, from the Tracker Class. It had blue and pale yellow scales, a crown of spikes on top of its head, and spikes protruding from its tail.

The second was a Gronckle, from the Boulder Class. It had brown and some green-ish scales, small wings buzzing like a hummingbird's, and a bumpy tail looking like a pile of rocks.

The third was a Monstrous Nightmare, from the Stoker Class. It had burnt orange scales with a few yellow stripes and dark red horns. Its wings were massive and tipped with sharp talons. It snorted as some smoke poured out from its nostrils.

The fourth was a Hideous Zippleback, from the Mystery Class. It had two heads with a mix of yellow and green scales and reddish brown spikes. The head on the right breathed out a noxious smelling gas while the head on the left clicked its teeth, sending out sparks.

The fifth was a Stormcutter, from the Sharp Class. With its owl-like features and four powerful wings, it ruffled its scales as it snarled.

"Let's get outta here!" One woodcutter yelled.

"Watch out for their bite, lads!" Another shouted as he ran off.

The flock quickly surrounded Gobber and Fuufuun, snarling and growling.

"Friends wait!" Fuufuun yelled. She dropped her lanturn and tried to make a getaway, but the Deadly Nadder took a snap at her. "Meh meh meh!"

Gobber grabbed Fuufuun by the scruff of her neck and pulled her close to him. He brandished his axe. "St-Stay...Stay back!" He yelled.

The flock snarled at them, gnashing their fangs.

"W-We...We warning you!" Fuufuun yelled, though she wasn't exactly a threat.

"Take that!" Gobber swung his axe around, hoping to hit something.

The Gronckle grabbed the axe in its mouth. With its strong jaws, it snapped the axe, clean in half.

"Meh meh meh! Not good! Not good!" Fuufuun exclaimed.

"I know ya blasted furball!" Gobber snapped.

The Monstrous Nightmare roared, causing the man and Nopon to drop right to the ground.

"No!"

"Pl-Please! Don't hurt Fuufuun and Friend Gobber!" Fuufuun begged.

Then, the Stormcutter took a swipe at Gobber, giving him a nasty gash.

"A-AHH!" "Meh Meh!" The two screamed.

Suddenly, the dragons stopped their attack as a howl sounded out. The flock turned to the forest as their eyes briefly glowed. They ran back into the darkness of the woods as three figures emerged.

"Th-Thor almighty!" Gobber exclaimed.

The first was a girl with fair blond hair tied into a long braid with a headband holding back a few bangs that hung over her left eye. She wore a blue top with a red vest and silver shoulder pauldrons. She had a pair of vanguards on her forearms and a brown skirt studded with skull buckles and spikes. Lastly, she had some leggings and wore some sturdy boots.

The second was an older woman-an adult. She had brown hair tied into three long braids that reached past her back and green eyes. She wore an off-yellow shirt, a long deep red skirt and boots. In her left hand, she held an intricatly decorated staff.

The third and final member of this trio was a boy. He was about the same age as the girl, but had a hair color and eye color similar to the woman. He wore an outfit made of mostly leather and brown fabric. He had some leather bracers on his arms and about three or four belts across his chest area, along with brown pants. Finally, he had a metal prosthetic replacing his left foot.

"Meh meh meh!" "N-No! No, please!" Fuufuun and Gobber turned their heads away, holding up their hands/paws in a protective manner. They didn't want to see what this trio was about to do to them.

The trio held their hands over the wound on Gobber's chest and a light began to glow as they and the flock let out howls.

Fuufuun looked up. "M-Meh...Meh meh?"

"H-Huh?" Gobber looked up as well. "Wh...What?" The scratches on his chest began to disappear.

The trio took their hands away once the wound was gone. They had healed Gobber of the damage the dragons had done.

"Y-You...You heal friend?" Fuufuun said, surprised.

"You three...are Scalewalkers?" Gobber said, just as surprised as his Nopon friend.

The mysterious trio said nothing.

The woman pointed towards the village with her staff, silently ordering the two of them to leave.

"Uhh, r-right." Gobber said, turning to run. He started to book it back to the village.

"Th-Thank friends!" Fuufuun said, as she followed.

The trio headed back into the forest with the dragon flock right beside them.

"We must get back to the den." The woman said.

Moments later, the trio had arrived at their den, deep within the woods.

"They're not gonna stop...are they?" The girl said.

"They won't stop until they find the den." The boy said as he paced around.

"What's gonna happen to us?"

"...I need to find us a new place to live." The woman said, having made her decision.

"We're going with you!" The girl said.

"No. You two need to stay here."

"But Mom—" The boy started to speak, wanting to convince the woman to bring them along.

"You two have to protect the dragons and the den."

"But you can't do this alone!" The girl protested.

"No. No, she's right." The boy said, knowing this was an argument they couldn't win. "We can't leave the den and the flock unguarded."

"...O-Okay then." The girl conceded as well. Even she knew the woman was right. Having two people guarding the den was the best idea and less lonely for the flock. "Please, be very careful."

"Yes, I will. Remember, you two, stay away from the villagers." The woman said. She turned to the boy. She gently held his face and pressed their foreheads together. "I'll be back soon."

"D...Do you promise?" The boy asked.

"I promise."

Welcome, everyone, welcome!

So yeah, after I had watched the concept trailer for 'Wolfwalkers', I decided I wanted to do a 'Dragons' version of it, but I wanted to go in a different direction at first. I wanted to do this story kinda set in the modern day, but since I had no idea where the story was going, I was planning to wing it. At least, I think I was?

You've probably noticed, right? "Umm, why are there Nopon in this story? Wouldn't that make this a crossover with Xenoblade Chronicles?" I can hear some of you question and maybe a few of you scratching your heads.

Here's the thing, okay? That was a part of my original direction for the story. As I was writing up a draft for the first chapter, I started to realize that I did NOT like where it was going, and it really would've ended up being a crossover with Xenoblade Chronicles. So much so that actual characters from the games would've made an appearance or cameo. I wasn't happy with it, so I decided...'Screw it' and what you have just read is the result!

Also, I don't have access to Apple TV +, nor do I have plans to get it. I'm honestly just waiting until they decide to release 'Wolfwalkers' on DVD/BluRay. (She said hopefully.)

I do have alternative means to follow along with the story, and it's not just the various clips that have made the rounds on the inter-webs. I am in possesion of a graphic novel for 'Wolfwalkers', which I highly recommend you pick up at your local book store of choice! It's the next best thing, and it's only 12 dollars! (Or was it 15? Doesn't matter, it was a reasonable price!)

In the next part-our official chapter one-we meet our heroes! Well, two heroines and one heropon.

OH! Before I forget, I should mention that Hiccup and Astrid are in their outfits from HTTYD: THW. No thanks to my probably poor description. That is my bad. My thoughts on HTTYD3 are mixed, but you really don't want to know, right? Right! Trust me on this, you DON'T want to know...

One more thing, there may be some SLIGHT language in later chapters. Nothing too strong, don't worry, but fair warning now!

I think that's it. So...Enjoy!

And also, READER BEWARE! If you don't like me, my style or the story, that's cool, more power to you. Someone's bound to like it. Don't worry, this part won't be too long on the next chapter. Also, as a heads up, if something about my style or my OC's seems familiar, well...That's a secret. I'm already taking a risk if this actually does make its rounds on the inter-webs. I've no doubt in my mind that there is a certain...party who has placed a bounty upon my head. But, I really do hope you enjoy this tale. That is all I ask.
