A Secret Swan Slumbers

Unbeknown to anyone Albus Dumbledore sat quietly in the shadows watching his dear friend Minerva McGonagall try to teach her Gryffindor students how to dance for the upcoming Yule Ball.

"The house of Godric Gryffindor has commanded the respect of the wizard world for nearly 10 centuries. I will not have you, in the course of a single evening, besmirching that name by behaving like a babbling, bumbling band of baboons."

Professor Dumbledore tried his best to muffle a laugh. Minerva was never one to take things lightly he thought to himself.

"Inside every girl a secret swan slumbers longing to burst forth and take flight. Inside every boy, a lordly lion prepared to prance."

Chuckling to himself he noticed that young Ronald Weasley was given the opportunity to dance with Professor McGonagall much to the amusement of his fellow students.

After a further ten minutes or so the rest of the students had managed to muster up the courage and found a dance partner. Now they were all hopping about like a flock of headless chickens trying their very best to dance. An entertaining sight if ever there was one Professor Dumbledore thought, restraining yet another laugh.

Time flies by when one has fun and before long it was just Professor Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall left, the students had all hurried off to their next lesson. Just as Professor McGonagall was about to wave her wand and restore order back to the classroom, tables and chairs in their rightful places etc, music started to play and she felt a familiar arm slide around her waist.

"My dear, you mentioned something about a swan longing to burst forth. I dare say my lion is prepared to prance."

Giggling to herself Minerva turned around and was met by two sparkling blue eyes.

"Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore are you asking me to dance?"

She placed her left hand on his shoulder and her right in the palm of his left hand.

"My dear Minerva, are you agreeing to dance with an old fool like myself?"

Together their feet started to move to the music. Dipping and swirling around the empty classroom in perfect time to the music. They were naturals moving so gracefully. Gazing into his twinkling blue eyes she felt like she was floating on air. Managing to tear her eyes away from his gaze for a split second she realized she was floating on air. Gasping she held on to him even tighter. Savoring his sherbet lemon and chocolate scent she melted in his arms.

Professor Dumbledore was pleased he managed to accomplish the desired effect. Holding her in his arms felt so right. When he looked into her emerald green eyes his heart would skip a beat. Smiling to himself he realized it would not be long before he would be holding her in his arms again. The Yule Ball was approaching and one of the many perks of being headmaster is that it is customary for him to dance the first dance with the deputy headmistress.

Oh how she cherished the time they spent together. There was an unspoken love between them. They both knew they were more than just colleagues and somewhere deep down they also knew that they were more than just best friends. Though they had yet to act upon it. The music was coming to an end, she could feel her feet touching the floor but never once did she lose eye contact with him. Minerva held her breath. She found these moments to be the hardest, the moments when he looked at her as if…as if…he loved her.

Albus stared deep into her green eyes. He felt an overwhelming sensation to kiss her. He lent forward but kissed her hand, always a true gentleman.
