Chapter 1 - Prologue "First Push"
I saw bloodshed. It felt so...wrong
A bring red haze surrounded me.
The smell of iron was intoxicating.
Broken bodies, so many broken bodies.
Blood, it permutes the land, what was once was, is now a land of red.
I remember how it scared me, I cried...I mourned. W-Who could've done this? I remembered the shine and glint of blades.
Ah, I now know...why? Why did they hurt each other?
Tears fell from my eyes. I fell to my knees unable to even muster the will power to stand.
I wanted to look away...yet below me was a pristine blade and blood red eyes stared back.
Light shines on the morning dew. Eyes flickered open, light brown eyes met the sunlight. The individual rose from his bed before sitting in a comfortable position.
The individual is a young man, his body frame is well developed. Slim yet broad muscles stretched whatever fatigued remained. He turned to his side where a window rested. His hands gently raised the windows, allowing the morning breeze to flow in. Long brown hair weaved with the wind.
The young man stood up, moving towards a large, body mirror while grabbing a comb. His stood before the mirror, slowly and methodically combing his shoulder length hair.
A youthful face grunted in slight discomfort at any troublesome knots. His features were cold yet firm. Two long bangs framed the sides of his face with another coming down between his eyes and curving towards the right.
A peaceful scenery, one of tranquility and calm but deceit always lie on the surface. Only if you look beneath the underneath as they say can you find the truth.
Those dreams-no memories and yet not someone else's.
A dream of a memory of my own. This is strange.
When did this start? When did I-
"Kaito, are you up dear?" A calm feminine voice pierced the thoughts and the young man, Kaito almost stumbled in surprise.
"Yes mom I'm up. Sorry for taking so long" Kaito replied calmly. How long was I in deep thought.
"It's okay, go brush your teeth first. Breakfast is coming up in a half hour." Hid mother's voice slowly lessened as does the bumping of footsteps.
Kaito calmly walked, walked towards the next day, preparing for any expected and unexpected events. He quietly chuckled lightly at his own thoughts.
With my family the unexpected is the expected.
And yet despite my mood. For whatever thoughts he had, less than pleasant ones linger.
Another day closer
The youth shook his head and took a deep breath. Eyes closed before reopening, hazel eyes met the bedroom door and a next step was taken.
Stepping towards the the dining room he noted of one other occupant.
Sitting on a chair was a middle aged man, hair spiked backwards with small bangs falling midway on his and square rimed glasses.
The man took notice of his presence.
"Good morning son," The man greeted Kaito with a warm smile taking his eyes away from the newspaper he is holding.
"Good morning dad, anything of note?" Kaito greeted back, curious of any new development.
"Nothing really, well it's always good to check. Speaking of check, is your brother awake?" He asked, his son took a seat at the table before answering.
"No, but he should be awake soon" As soon as he was done speaking, breakfast came so to does his mother.
"I'll go wake Issei up." The middle aged woman said as she walks upwards towards the older brother's room.
The two males began to eat with no interruptions, a quiet affair until a loud bump as well as crashing was heard. They were unbothered, already use to such trivialities.
"Looks like Issei overslept again" The older man expressed his exasperation.
Kaito nodded and hummed in agreement.
The two are quietly, soon a tranquil silence came as a result though they both know it won't last.
However the one to break the silence came from an unexpected source.
"What about you Kai?" His father's sudden question had said young man looking at him questionably.
"I mean you usually wake up early, helping make breakfast with your mother," It seems he notices today's change of the norm.
The young man seemingly stared impassively.
It is not that he did not take the words of his father into consideration. Merely that he is already aware-no has grown accustomed to such things.
"I'm not quite sure, I must've been more tired than I though yesterday," He replied, seemingly unbothered by the question.
He did not lie, the truth of the matter is that he truly does not know the cause. If the cause cannot be found, then in his mind their is no reason to peruse it.
It's not as if it is causing any trouble for anyone.
Though the wrinkling of his father's creases showed otherwise and that this matter is exactly pushed under the rug as they say.
His father sighed,"Kai you should...take it easy with your kendo practice. I mean you already have your extracurricular studies to do. Maybe it's best if you quit kendo for a bit. I don't want it getting too much for you."
"Alright. If it becomes too much of a problem. I'll consider,"Kaito replied softly, understanding father's concerns and sent a look of reassurance.
He nodded his head before finishing his meal and taking his plate to the kitchen sink.
It is somewhat unfortunate, his mother cooks great food, today's sandwich being particularly appetizing but upon realizing the time he could not savor it.
"Wow. What's the rush son?"
Kaito had not fully registered his fathers question as he was finishing any last minute check ups.
Uniform properly worn as per school regulations. The black blazer worn comfortably around his chest. As Kaito was tying his hair with a small ribbon, he responded.
"Ah, I have a rather busy schedule this morning."
After verifying the time to ensure that he did have enough and fortunately it does seems so.
He took a small sighed of relief. Much to do for the day, including his private studies.
Kaito took his laptop bag which also acts as a school bag, preference really and lunch that is neatly wrapped as a bento.
"Could you tell Issei and mom that I'll be at school earlier?" He asked as he finishes his preparations.
He was clearly in a somewhat rush as after he exited the house, only staying long enough to hear his father's agreement.
As the sunshine caught his eye sunshine he instinctively held his hands to his face.
He took a few seconds to breathe in the morning air.
Well, the weather is nice at least
The early morning gave way to a bustling of activities. The ringing of bells and the the creaking of doors signifies the opening of establishments.
It the calm before the storm, metaphorically speaking.
Casually walking between this lull is Kaito. As clothing resembles a uniform typically worn by students.
A black blazer with white highlights, similar color trousers and bow. The bow is tied to the collar of the shirt, it gives the uniform a certain professional look.
As time passes for Kaito soon others whom wore a uniform similar to his own begin to show themselves, students they are.
It is very much early in the new day so the number of students is not many and those that do arrive early are usually club members.
The familiar pitter and patter of shoes clicking on the concrete floor aided by the smile filled murmuring of students is a common sight.
Though one seems to be the outlier.
Carrying his bag on his back Kaito walked with a rather focused face. His fingers, gently resting on his chin, it appears he is in deep thought.
Unfortunately it is about to be broken when his eyes shifted to locks of black hair.
The near collision nearly brought the both of them to the floor but it is in their surprise that Kaito was able to take a good look at his...friend.
Unique purple eyes widen in worry on a rather beautiful face as the young lady flusters at her near mishap. Her mind attempted to regain control of her disbelieved mind.
"S-Sorry I didn't mean to almost crash on you. I am terribly sorry I-" The young lady was stammering in an attempt to explain herself.
"It's okay, no harm was done"
Kaito could very well see the young lady is having a difficult time apologizing and he truly bears no ill will towards her, so he gave a small smile and reassured to the best he can.
Surprised eyes widened in surprise before finally calming down. The young lady took a few deep breaths before speaking
"Thank you and uhhh"
"Is everything alright?" Kaito asked softly, concern clearly heard from his voice.
"Y-Yeah it is, just...Do you know where is Kouh Academy?" She asked confused and yet also embarrassed...again.
The brown haired youth was surprised for a moment but soon came to understand the situation.
The black haired lady wore the female uniform of Kouh Academy and yet she walked the complete opposite direction of the school.
Which leaves one possibility "Are you a transfer student?" Kaito asked, tilting his head slightly and his right eyebrow raised.
"Ah was it that obvious?" The embarrassment within the young lady increased with her surprised at how quickly the young man could catch on.
Kaito nodded silently, he can observe that the growing silence is not helping his new acquaintance.
Moreover he had a strange feeling, one that is telling him that he is being observed or rather they. Questions were asked within his mind.
Who is watching us? Are they after someone. I didn't notice up until I bumped into her. A-Are they after her?
No, perhaps I'm overthinking things but...as they say better to be safe than sorry.
His concerns won the internal battle quite easily though he would've helped regardless.
Kaito silently sweat-dropped when he heard the raven haired youth berating herself, muttering her annoyance.
"Do you want me to guide you there?" Kaito asked, breaking her from her mumbling stupor. It was a simple question and yet the response was not one would expect.
The young lady stared into Kaito's eyes stoically, her face not betraying any emotion she could have.
A feeling long forgotten.
Asking herself, is this true?
Silence reigned as the world sit still and the man caught in the middle is left befuddled. The growing tension concerns Kaito.
Did I do something wrong?
His eyes lowered slightly. A clear intention to apologize could be seen in his eyes and yet purple orbs stared, refusing to separate hazel ones.
The young man is left stunned, the meaning lost to him until a small smile spread on the lady's face. Her smile spoke enough and yet not so.
A little smile but not complete, like a key missing it's lock.
She's smiling at me-no she's smiling at something else.
A past long dead yet never forgotten.
From one kindred soul to another.
The water moved.
"That-Thank you," She bowed her head in appreciation. Kaito silently nodded, a small smile matching his acquaintance.
The early breeze flew and two pair of steps rang. Peaceful in its own tranquillity but all storms will brew, for the calm is but a respite.
Slitted eyes narrowed onto the pair.
As Kaito marched closer to their shared destination. The frequency of students began to increase as well as the frequency of...remarks.
"Who is she?"
"She is really pretty."
"Is she a new transfer?"
"Why is she with the cold prince?"
"Maybe he was asked by the student council."
"Lord have mercy. I wished that was me."
The commonality left him rather...unbothered by them. They were mostly harmless, though he won't lie and say that he is completely unbothered but it is manageable.
Unfortunately his companion is someone who can't. He silently and slightly berated himself at the lack of foresight.
"Um"
"You needn't worry. It's actually rather common for students around here to gossip...I believe. Don't worry it's harmless," Kaito could only give his reassurance which seems to have worked as her shoulder's slacked slightly.
Suddenly he felt something wash over him which alarmed his body causing his fingers to twitch slightly.
"We're here," Kaito called out and a small, cute squeak was her only response.
I can't blame her.
Despite attending this institution for a year greater. Kaito is at times, am still left astounded by the architecture. It's size and well designed frame could stun most individuals for the first time.
But this place feels wrong, like something is here that is or was not supposed to be here.
Kaito observed my surroundings discreetly. There was no clear abnormalities. No gazes lingered on the pair aside from a few...admirers.
And yet why do I still feel we are being watched. Could it just be a student.
No this one felt different.
No, rather than watched, it felt like they were being observed.
Could it be a thief. If someone is watching, I had hoped to deter them by entering a crowed area.
There are too many witnesses and yet whomever is still there. Are they that confident?
"Well this is where we part ways for now," Kaito said, meeting her eyes. Her gaze lowered before she showed a bright smile in appreciation.
"Yeah. Thanks by the way. If it wasn't for you I'll be lost the whole day," Her voice is weak which bothered Kaito.
If she is truly attending this institution, it would mean other opportunities to speak or meet up. Then why does she seem so affected.
Maybe she lacks confidence? No matter it is her privacy.
"Sure."
Our words were short, a simple goodbye for the morning but one hopeful to meet again, at least to Kaito.
Raven haired swished as the youth walked forward, her steps taking in strides. But one moved forward and the other stayed.
An action born out of concern.
Born out of care of a boy who once never had.
"Um. Excuse me," Both now stayed.
Both sets of eyes locked on. The young lady watched on patiently.
Kaito scratched his cheek awkwardly, which to him felt warmed in embarrassment and he could not meet her gaze.
She attempted to hide her surprise, one that was not missed as he stared. His eyes conveyed his emotions more so than his face could ever have.
Indecision, a war raged in his mind. He clearly did not want his own fears troubling another, but what if, what if he was wrong.
What if I'm making a mistake.
But as he gazed his eyes onto those purple orbs. He could feel that he understood a bit more about her. An eyes that too showed indecision, one in conflict much his own.
No, It's never wrong to worry for another.
"T-Take care. If you ever feel something's wrong, go speak to a teacher and just be careful," The words were spoken, few and yet they had hit the young lady more so than any force.
They come from a place.
A place in which Kaito rarely ventures lest he succumb to the force within him.
A deep rooted fear is the product, at himself and for the others around him. Despite this he felt a compulsion to lay his heart open.
A heart sharing its warmth, all to convey a single meaning.
Perhaps he is making a mistake, that what he is doing could only endangering others. An unknown presence, infinite possibilities and fear could be the greatest drive.
He is well aware of what his actions are doing to others but such things are better than the alternative.
And yet like embers on downpour, one only need to give it just a little warmth to start a flame.
Only by giving warmth, can you also receive it.
A genuine smile shined on the woman's face for the first time, it radiated warmth and felt complete. A piece wishing to be placed.
And yet he couldn't help but feel it's wrong.
"Thank you. You are a good person. Don't worry, I'll take your words to heart."
Kaito stood there for a moment, seemingly frozen while internally collecting his thoughts.
Immediately his heart lighten to see she took his words seriously despite the less than impressive presentation. In the end he could only hope.
I can no longer feel it, so did I do the right thing?
I could only hope.
As Kaito moved through the hallways of Kuoh, simultaneously ignoring any passing remarks. Some are just harmless...others, he wished he could ignore.
You are a good person
Those words, the way she spoke of them. It felt like a meaning beyond a wayward comment.
Why does she seem so sad
The Academy is divided by the year. It is expected that students most often interacted with students of the same year. Then again expectations are not predictions.
With long hallways that stretch from classroom to classroom, large windows allow natural light to filter, the school itself can be quite beautiful.
Light shined onto a familiar young man as he passes through the hallway. His low ponytail ruffling as he walked.
Kaito came to a stop near a classroom. His fingers gently and politely knocked on the already opened door before entering himself.
The day is young so the number of students is quite small, nevertheless his presence does not go unnoticed.
"Kaito-sempai is here!"
"Hahhhhh,"
"Should we talk to him?"
"Don't you know he's the cold prince. Don't bother trying,"
"I heard that he never smiles,"
Kaito's face shifted, a frown deepening and eyebrows lowered. The words clearly have affected him yet he does not want to show it openly.
The words of juniors, more importantly other students should not have affect him and yet their comments, some at least are quite disheartening.
His hand gently brushed his locks to the side hoping it would have some comforting affect.
He then took a quiet yet deep breath, calming himself before speaking to a rather...short girl.
"Good morning Koneko-san," Bright golden eyes opened to meet Kaito's own. The young, petite girl let out a small sound of acknowledgement then she greeted back.
"Good morning Kaito-sempai."
Koneko then gave him a look, one of expectation and hope. Her head tilted and the small piece of chocolate within her grasp was left forgotten.
Sadly he could not meet her expectations.
"I'm sorry Koneko-san but I woke up late today so I couldn't make the tempura you wanted," Kaito apologized sincerely, Koneko let out a grunt of dissatisfaction though not easily heard, and her eyes lowered disappointedly.
"But," Her ears perked at his words, Kaito could not help but felt his lips tugging upwards.
His hands reached inside his pocket, bringing a small pouch with it being tied by a white ribbon. Koneko's eyes slightly widened in curiosity.
"It's konpeito. I made some yesterday hoping you would like them. Here," Kaito explained before dropping the pouch on Koneko's hand.
It seemed that Kaito had intended that to be their last interaction for the morning. His body turned, legs moved ready to leave but was stopped before a step was even taken.
Kaito had felt a small grip on his left hand as if something was anchored to it. He had a feeling on whom was the culprit but was surprised nonetheless.
"Kaito-sempai looked sad," Koneko's voice reached his ears, it held a slight pained tone.
Unknowing to what effect her words could have on him, as his back was turned to her but she continued nevertheless.
"Here. You can have some," She offered the konpeito to him, her eyes betrayed her stoic face.
Another feeling of expectation was placed suddenly upon him.
He was surprised though he is one of two males whom she regularly interacted...if it could be called interacting, it nonetheless surprised him how open she is being.
She looks helpless.
With teeth gritting behind his lips, a response came through though it was more dismissive than he would've liked.
He could not meet her expectations.
"No need, thank you Koneko-san", He turned towards her, his expression forever calm as if never changing.
For he had to hold himself for cursing his own actions but that could be handled another time for he has a young junior to focus on.
Kaito gently wrapped his fingers around the ones of the smaller girl, coaxing her to release him which she does eventually.
A warm feeling travelled throughout, her body shuddered at the feeling. A warmth that brought memories of a time with another. But her heart cannot will itself to bask in the warmth.
A heart left long ago in betrayal.
The girl is left feeling down, her gaze left falling and snacks left uneaten. Those memories brought an uncomfortable feeling to the young girl. The event was so long that she could not accurately describe her feelings.
Koneko dreads the day her past resurfaces.
It couldn't, could it?
Seeing his junior being so downtrodden made Kaito's soften, the brown haired-youth raised his hand, two fingers extended.
A small poke to the forehead surprising Koneko, enough for her focus to redirect onto Kaito. He then gave a small smile which caused the petite girl's face to redden.
"How about later. I'm rather busy this morning," Koneko returned his smile with one of her own, her hair bobbed as she nodded.
With his task finished he left his junior for the day but left a parting pat on the head as an apology.
As he took one final look, he saw his junior with redden cheeks and yet it was only later when he came to a realization that throughout his discussion with Koneko there was a distinct lack of bystanders.
Kaito POV
I walked. Even as the world shift around me. I walked. The once luminescent light, it's shine filled the hallways with warmth for all of eternity but no more. For nothing can exist without change and as I passed a red hue doused my vision.
The world turned red. The light dimmed, now filtering an ominous deep scarlet. The beating of heart and the tapping of shoes rang harder than ever before. I walked.
The choices I have made.
Shadows began to form. Black blobs began to creak into the hallway. They began take on the shape of humanoids and yet they possess no features.
I may never will escape their shadow.
Screams, sounds of panic and pain drowned my ears. Their source, unknown for it surrounds me in its insidious prison.
But.
It's pitch grows louder. It begins to pain my eardrums and I felt powerless to stop them. For I felt that I can never block them out in whatever endeavor I seek.
I do know this.
Heads turned, shadows reformed. Their faceless features stared at me, judging my every actions. Their stares pierced my soul, intentions unknown.
For whatever my mind conflicts.
The screams stopped, the stares ended but the nightmare has yet to finish. Silence reigned for a moment before a great roar was heard. A beast, a terror, one not of human origin. I cried out and I walked.
For whatever pain my actions bring.
In the heart of Hyoudou Kaito, the roar hid not scare him, not in of itself. What did was the implication. A reminder, a timer and an inescapable fate. Despite this, I walked.
I don't like it when you are hurt
Within my soul, I felt a pull and a wet sensation enveloped by body. I felt light and cool like water. I imagined water surrounding me but it was so agitated, you couldn't see anything.
Koneko.
I closed my eyes, took a deep inhale and breathed out. As I did the water settled and I felt that my mind was clear. The twisted illusion was broken, nothing to corrupt as if there was nothing in the first place.
I may not be what you need.
Doubts, fear, anger, it all disappeared but so to does love, happiness and sadness. A blank slate, no different than the void up above.
I may cause you to be more hurt.
Even the void has something to it. For people are exactly that, the void only given shape by the choices we made.
But.
My eyes reopened and I was greeted to sunlight hitting my eyes. I looked around, my head turned from left to right. I was at the end of the hallway, I stood there, ignoring the looks I was receiving.
Whatever pain you have suffered, know that I am here. I saw how hurt you look everyday, you always did distance yourself from others.
For whatever secrets you keep, know that I understand. I recall how reserved you were when you past was asked and it must have hurt.
Koneko you want me to understand you, to help you. I wish I can help but I cannot, for if you continue to close your heart to yourself how can you open up for others.
How can you let others in.
My body unfroze from its spot, hands swaying side to side. I walked leaving only my final thoughts.
I know there are people wanting to help you. They are there and they are waiting. A liability like myself can never help you but if you ever need someone, I'll be there because.
The face of a young girl as she sat on a tree's base, alone with no one lending a hand resurfaced in my mind.
I don't like it when you are hurt, Koneko-san.
The entrance, whether inside of out of Kouh Academy is quite large to accommodate the large student population.
A familiar student is seen in the crowd of students. He begins to walk the flight of stairs that lead to the second floor.
His hand clutch the handrail and his head tilted upwards. There was no discernible reaction on his face. A cold stare and thinned lips. What is he thinking? What is he doing?
Many cared to ask but none wish to listen nor wish to seek it.
Rather most students would keep their distance. Feminine squeals and stares of admiration or adoration did nothing to lift the small ache within his chest. A slight grimace made it's way to his face.
As Kaito made the final step his grimace shifted to on of surprised. For he did not expect the individual standing before him.
Standing proud despite a smaller frame is young spectacled woman with distinct purple eyes, said eyes boring onto him and arms crossed.
Kaito scratched his creek meekly in response.
"Good morning Shitori-Kaichou, I'm very sorry for being late. Do you still want to continue the planned study session?" His voice was even but the sincerity of it can be heard clearly.
A tense silence followed, none interrupted them as if compelled to do so.
"You don't have to if you have other business to attend to-" Kaito attempted to break the silence, his intentions were clear but their was no need, Kaito was confused by the reaction he was given.
A smile broke from the woman's face, her body relaxed though arms still cross. Her smile remained showing some sense of familiarity among the two individuals.
"Good morning Hyoudou-kun. Yes, I won't mind. Honestly I appreciate your concern but I assure you, I'm not angry at you for being late, especially upon my requests." She said calmly.
Her voice commanded a tone surety, posture firm and confident. Many would gravitate towards her in awe, struck by her sharp gaze.
They will follow her, they will listen to her.
Indeed so but Hyoudou Kaito is not many for he can see beyond that. Certainly when the time comes, he will treat her appropriately as the school president.
But as of now, the individual in front of him is like any other girl and so he shall respond to as if. In his eyes he is not following nor obeying.
"Well I suppose I'll have to take your word."
Kaito and the class president walked in sync, with the both of them side by side. It was a quiet march yet not uncomfortable. Neither of them has or have been the very talkative type, simply allowing the quaint and peaceful silence.
"Have you read the books I recommended?" Shitori-Kaichou asked, as they neared their destination.
Both of them enjoy reading and have at times recommended books to one another.
"I have. They were quite informative," Kaito said absentmindedly, recalling the previous day.
"That's good. Jessica Springer is among my favorites in the medical field," Kaito let out a small hum as a response at my senior's words of approval.
"Do you know any other books she published?" The brunette voiced his thoughts, clearly interested in Ms. Springer's work.
Though his tone suggested otherwise, many would miss the slight tinge of excitement.
Shitori-Kaichou however did pick up on something as the reaction that came shocked me. She chucked with her hand coming to her mouth, covering it to hide her amusement.
"You're certainly enthusiastic aren't you," Her voice came out lighter than he was expecting, even with a trace of mischievousness. Kaito blinked and turned towards her.
"Was I perhaps too obvious?" There was no real concern to his understanding. Therefore he did not voice any urgency.
"No not really"
Kaito blinked again apparently, not sure the most appropriate way to respond. The still smile on the student presidents face did nothing to help.
"Then how can you-"
"Let's just say I'm good at reading people," Kaito was abruptly cut off before he could finish his question but relented in the end as he noticed something.
Standing before them is a door with the sign labeling it as the the Student Council Room, what should be nothing of concern is however proven wrong as Kaito's body tensed.
An aura that seeks to wash you away, like the roaring waves wishing to swallowing you whole.
The air suddenly felt different to him but still no noticeable changes. Kaito subtly looked at his surroundings, nothing looked different but clearly something was.
An aberration or was it?
Then what does it mean for-
"Come in"
Broken from his thoughts, Kaito eyes closed for a moment, collecting himself before focusing onto those his senior. Her vibrant pink orbs stared back, confused yet calculating at my silence.
An eye to an eye. Both of their colors reflected onto the other like a mirror.
It can be said that the eyes were the windows to the soul.
Mayhap they hold some truth. To look between the other and to see each other for whom they truly are with no deceit. That would be nice.
Kaito look further, eyes and brows surely narrowing before lips compelled on their lonesome.
He had no control and yet he couldn't help but release all that built up tension. Kaito could feel himself chuckling and his stoic slowly melting away.
He couldn't stop even more so when the tips of her cheek turned flustered. Was it by the unexpectedness or something else, to Kaito it didn't matter.
"Ah sorry sorry Shitori-Kaichou. I did not mean to make you uncomfortable," Kaito continued to smile though apologetically. His brows turned downwards before giving a slight bow.
"N-No I-I'm fine. It wasn't a big deal."
Shitori-san can never hurt someone, not with her eyes.
An eye wrinkle in determination, in resolve.
Yet never forgetting the heart.
The glint of admiration in his eyes and the warmth of his smile yet to fade. It will go away, a choice he himself must do but for now he will relish in the feeling.
The both of them quickly made themselves comfortable. The purpose for their arrival is a joint study session.
It was proposed by the student council president as preparation for the upcoming quiz. They are considered the brightest students in Kouh.
Kaito considers it rather relaxing affair. Basking in the sunlight with a nice cup of tea that he had prepared beforehand.
Soon time passed, a few hours had gone by and the two students have not relinquished their concentration. Occasionally asking the other for advice or their own opinion on a certain topic.
The sun has risen higher, the red glow of dawn made way for shimmering gold. The sky was clear, the sounds of birds singing melodiously and lively.
Sunlight peered into the room, illuminating its inhabitants. For both students it's an alarm that their morning class is about to begin.
As the study session is about to come to an end. Farewells were expected to be told and yet both remained oddly silent though not for long as the school president speaks.
"Hyoudou-kun thank you for fulfilling my admittedly selfish request," A small frown as she spoke.
For she is a woman of pride, to act as a burden for another especially one she has come to bond with is not something she can tolerate.
A heavy heart, guilt for one believing in its selfishness and curiosity from another questioning his value. Kaito spoke, his voice uneven to one of confusion.
"I do not mind Shitori-Kaichou but I have to ask," At her inclination, he continued "Why me of all people...I mean...is it because of my score?"
"Yes and no. I find your company quite enjoyable." She spoke with a fond smile on her face though it quickly turned into a sight of exasperation.
"Now if only your brother follows you," She said, frustration practically dripping.
Kaito's smiled although sheepishly. He is well aware of his younger brother's...habit and knows how most of the student body views him.
He understood their reasoning but living their whole lives together, he knows the true person his brother is.
"My brother may be not the most upstanding student but he is a good person. I am sorry if he has caused you any problems," He head attempted to bow as sign of apology but a raised hand halted his movement.
"Trust me, I'm used to problematic siblings,"She spoke, her tone flat as if there was some joke he was missing.
Is she referring to her sister?
He had never met her sister only hearing of her in an offhanded comment.
I wonder what type of person she is.
"It sounds like you had it rough it seems." He gave what he thought was a comforting smile, then again if he is forcing himself to smile. Can it be considered a smile?
"You have no idea," It seems that any energy that was within the council president left her as she spoke, sounding exhausted.
He allowed her to gather herself as it seems she is reliving a rather...traumatic experience based on how her head is facing upwards, lifeless.
Soon he gave a small cough stirring her, aware of what her thought process was quickly devolving to, thankfully giving her the presence of mind to delve into that particular memory at a later and more appropriate time.
"I'll be on my way then. Thank you Shitori-Kaichou," He spoke first breaking the awkward silence that was forming.
Thought his last words came as a surprise to the raven-haired youth. Her eyes boring into him in confusion.
"Of course but why are you thanking me?"
It seems that Kaito had not react to the question but that could be farther from the truth. Memories re-emerged, words spoken but not forgotten. They may mean little to one but everything to another.
Kaito eyes closed, a fond smile made its way to his face. A smile filled with gratitude. A smile that for the first time leaves the heiress dazed.
"Nothing. Have a good day Shitori-san."
The meaning of those words was lost to any but the individual in question.
A simple dream. A desire even unfulfilled is worth pursuing.
The bell rang, it rings throughout the academy followed by hurried footsteps. Students pour out of their respective classes. Mixed chatter made it impossible to understanding what was being talked about.
"No way Kaben Rider Pink has way better Oppai!!"
That is if you shout if as if your like depends on it. A deafening shrill made all those whom were close proximity flinch.
The culprit is someone very close to Kaito, an average build and short spiky brown hair with two short locks of hair behind his head. The individual seems to be in an argument with two others.
"Issei Issei," one said mockingly before continuing "You must understand breast is not always about siz-"
And Kaito has decided that this conversation isn't something he is willing to listen. Make no mistake he is used to it, perhaps too used to it.
A sweat drop fell as he contemplated the notion. Regardless he makes his way towards the commotion knowing the likely culprit.
Three boys sat around a table with...questionable contents in their hands. Kaito shifted his eyes to the one he calls brother, sometimes fondly.
Now facing the boy, the resemblance between the both of them is undeniable and yet their expressions are night and day.
"Issei are you free this afternoon?" Kaito broke the argument between the three. His presence seems to be a breaking point as many whisper in the background, unable to keep their thoughts.
"Y'know I still can't believe both are twins."
"I know right."
"Maybe it's because they are twins that they developed different personalities.*gasp* Mayb-"
"Hibiki we don't live in an anime wor-"
"Shut."
Interesting conversations between students erupted but Kaito seems unbothered as stared, awaiting an answer.
Issei looks between his brother and two friends with indecision. His hand scratched the back of his head, thinking of an answer, sadly he'll be forced into one.
"No way we are going with a handsome bastard like you!" An indignant roar turned heads, seemingly furious at the institution.
"Thank you?" Kaito however did not understand based on his comment being more of a question. His eyebrow raised which seemed to have infuriated the two.
"C'mon Ise we have more exciting things to do," As if a switch was flicked, any doubt in Issei's mind disappeared. His face showed excitement with fists balled and perverting eyes practically radiated.
"Right! Sorry Kai," Without another word, three students rushed through the hallways. It did not take a genius to guess their intentions.
Kaito's eyes dropped slightly, clearly looking forward to spending a little time with his brother.
The reason is their schedules often misalign leaving very rare occasions for them to interact. He sighed, wishing he had more time and for another reason entirely.
He is aware of their intentions and knowing the literal beating his brother is about to be given. His care for Issei demanded him to move against any annoyance he may have.
Does my brother like being beaten?
Questions that he did not want to think about.
The sound of knocking reverberated against wood. The sound of footsteps and the the clicking of an opened door followed suit.
Two brown-haired youths met face to face, eyes locked to each other before one inevitably sighed.
"Your brother," Her tone was dead, the look she was giving to Kaito was one of someone whom is absolutely done.
He stiffened at the look and gave a small bow.
"I'm sorry Murayama-san," He apologized. Feeling guilt for his brothers actions, this has happened far too often.
"Oh no need so, do you want me to deal with them orrr," Though it seems Murayama holds no hard feelings for him as she waved at his apology.
"I'll go speak with him," He said determinedly, regardless this is his brother and as such he should take responsibility.
As he looks into the kendo sparing room, he observes several matches have started wrapping up. He can see some are looking agitated by his appearance, no doubt aware of the meaning of his arrival at this time.
That is slightly concerning.
Though thankfully they seem too angry to care about my presence.
"Right, me and girls will have to change somewhere else then," Murayama spoke, agitated and her brows furrowed.
To suddenly have to find another private area to change because of the immoral actions of another makes her scowl. Kaito catches his cheek hoping that all ends well despite the improbability.
"Again I'm so sorry for the trouble" Kaito apologized again after a moment.
Murayama shook her head, exasperated with a small smile hidden barely seen. She is well aware of Kaito's personality, having known him since her younger years as a kendo junior. Those memories hold a special place in her heart as the friends she made, some are sorely missed.
Regardless even after all these years she couldn't help but admire her long time friend.
"Don't be, I should be thanking you" Murayama said, calming her friend's worry."By the way"
"Hm?"
"You'll be at kendo later right?"
To others he appeared as a cold and aloof individual of little words. To others, it just seem he did not care but he does, she have known him.
He is caring young man, his gentle side known to her since back then.
Back when she needed it. His concerned gaze as her head rests, forever a treasured memory.
So please.
"Of course."
Her expression brightened, confusing Kaito why would anyone want to smile at him. He believes his presence would inconvenient others. For the moment he decided to halt those thoughts for another day. Right now he has a brother to save.
Either his brother is beaten up or sent to the principle's office. His mind cringed at the last meeting.
"Damn it Issei, give some space!"
"Shut up, I can't see anyone!"
"Maybe they are running late today,"
The sight of three boys pushing each other was met my Kaito's indifferent eyes. His existence has gone unnoticed until he decides to alert them of his presence.
*ahem* "Apologies Ise but the members of the kendo club are changing elsewhere."
Though his words sounded somewhat guilty, the expression he had did not change. The two others with Issei shouted indignantly, cursing the world for their luck.
They had finally found a hole to peep and yet it seems chance has kicked them. Only Issei seems unfazed, in actuality his mind is in overdrive showing unusual intelligence. He then points his finger at his brother accusingly.
"Wha-Wait did you tell on us."
""You bastard!!"" Issei's friends yelled, angry at the intervention not even giving Kaito time to defend himself. He was not visibly affected by their anger but rather their comment.
"That's not nice," He chided them, taking great displeasure at being referred in such a manner. His arms crossed and gaze hardened.
To the three perverts it is as if the temperature dipped, a chill ran their spine and especially for Issei since he is unused to such a reaction from his brother.
Kaito's gaze softened as he sobered from his stupor. Realizing his anger had gotten the better of him, his arms uncrossed and his posture and face returned to neutral.
Deep down he wondered why did he react so strongly to a small provocation.
"Listen I know of your...desires and I'm not forcing you to...relinquish them but please be mindful of other people's privacy," Kaito pleaded with them but it was in vain.
"But Kai, you don't understand. Too see breasts is the highest honor, for its the purpose of man since our forefathers. To deny it is to deny who we really are," Issei said strongly as fist balled in ferocity.
What did I just hear
Kaito's face did not change but Issei could feel the silent judging look his brother was giving, as if he was studying a new creature.
That might not be far from the truth. This has been one of Issei's most...passionate speech he has ever heard. He has heard worse...don't ask.
"Oh and on what basis," Kaito asked inquisitively, genuinely wondering where his brother's views came from.
"A random old man I saw when I was seven" Issei puffed out his chest, shamelessly ignoring the sheer...something of that statement.
If possible Kaito's expression dulled further. Deciding that further interactions or pleading is useless as his brother is known to be thick-headed.
Seems like another failed attempt at stopping his brothers...drive.
"Just come with me and we'll go to the principle's office or else you will get beaten up," Kaito's strict tone left no rebuttal.
Truly my brother is an interesting individual and yet.
Kaito tilted his head to see behind him was Issei childishly arguing, holding nothing back.
I still love him nonetheless.
And yet I couldn't help but envy him.
As the the quartet passed the school yard, the now crestfallen faces of the trio consequently which drew the attention of many.
Their admiration of him made him flustered. His hair tilted downwards hoping to hide himself and he could not meet any of their gazes.
His eyes turned to his brother, seeing him in another argument which he could understand the meaning of.
To be free without the claws of death lurking in your shadow.
"You idiots it was your fault Kai found out."
Thought I'll have to talk to him later.
The bell rang for the final time this day as noon passed and the sun begins its decent. The once bustling hallways is left bare with only a few individuals moving about.
The exception being clubs, as their purpose is to train like minded individuals in a certain field, they are usually opened for as long as dusk assuming they have permission.
Within the kendo club there is a large, open room with clear wooden walls and floors. This is to minimize possible injuries and act as a perfect practice ring.
Standing in the middle of the room was a familiar brunette, her eyes closed, concentrated and her arms wrapped around a bokken.
Her eyes blinked open before swinging downwards, sweat glistening. Her stance and forms continue until a gentle voice broke her concentration.
"Your muscles are too tense, you'll strain them if you continue."
Murayama turned her eyes to meet Kaito sitting seiza, much like herself wearing the academy approved keikogi and hakama.
"Good evening Murayama-san," He said before rising from his position. A smile made its way to her face.
"Ah good afternoon to you Kai-kun," Her voice chimes, pleased sounding from what Kaito can interpolate.
This confuses him, as a member of the kendo club it is expected he visits regularly, he does though not always.
Strange.
He decides to focus on another detail. The lack of students, the area is barren. It is true there are some days where the majority of club members are not available but for all but two, again strange.
Noticing the confusion in his eyes, Murayama elaborates.
"Next week's quiz is supposedly a very hard one so most of the members are absent for probably the week." She pointedly said.
The response satisfies Kaito, though the complete lack of students makes him wonder how often did they study. He supposed that better be safe then sorry, but it poses a question.
"And what about you?"
"I already did my study but anyway due to the lack of members it's closing early" She shrugged nonchalantly with an 'What are you gonna do about it' expression.
Kaito's brows furrowed wondering at what angle is his childhood friend playing, aware of the knowing smile growing on Murayama's face.
"Then why did you call me here?" He asked, his confusion naturally hidden by his stoic face.
"Why can't I talk with a friend," Murayama's accusation made Kaito blink before he realized what she is implying.
His stoic face shifted to flustered, his face red with embarrassment and he fumbled with his words.
"N-No-It's just-" He said lowly, his embarrassment causing him to speak nearly to a whisper.
Murayama sniffled a chuckle at Kaito's embarrassment but is happy that he is showing such care at her on what is essentially her jest.
It is truly endearing and heartening at times. A friend she will never replace.
"Ah, sorry just messing with ya, the others are in the changing room," Murayama apologizes guilty though her expression quickly regained its confidence. "They should be here soon."
The both of them fall into a comfortable routine with Murayama continuing her forms and katas. Her form was well trained but in Kaito's eyes noticed several mistakes.
He instructed her, showing greater importance in the basic handling of a stance to its most minuscule detail.
He was in the middle of explaining proper wrist handling before the sound of slamming doors alerted him of the new arrivals.
"There is still a lot fewer than usual," Kaito noted sounding somewhat surprised.
"Well I wasn't exactly lying," Murayama replied jokingly, despite this Kaito looked unbothered.
Murayama pouted slightly at the lack of response but had to regain her bearings when the others approached them.
All but one currently in the room are females, this is not to say that males are not allowed in the kendo club but that most were either terrified due to the clubs reputation of...hurting perverts or were themselves only interested in the girls.
Kaito himself was neither, additionally it was not his intention to enter the club. It was not that he was not interested but it seemed his interest lied elsewhere.
He seemed desperate to do something...no matter the cost but that's not healthy.
She couldn't help but recall an earlier time of her life.
A presence that refused to leave for her sake.
And the happiness she found it to be real.
It is admirable, truly it is but she couldn't accept it. It was a feeling born from melancholy and familiarity. She remembered, her was mind made up.
He is her friend.
Why don't you join the kendo club
The words she spoke forever frozen in time but the small smile on his face had melted whatever worries she had.
Her reminiscing eventually ended as she observed Kaito and a few members greeting one another. A few had blushes on their faces which unfazed him as he politely greeted them.
Kaito himself was not very talkative but he would never try to ignore someone's words.
As all the members currently available were here, a reminder hit Murayama when she saw a mop of pink hair.
"Kai-kun I actually want you to meet a new friend of mine," Murayama chimed as she gracefully moved pulling a pinkette into a sideways hug. "Introducing Katase-san."
The girl now introduced as Katase looked uncomfortable, either by the attention she receiving from her friends or having to meet Kaito's gaze. She gave a stink-eye to the perpetrator which was shrugged off.
Noticed by Kaito, he tried to be as amiable and polite as possible as to ease the young girl. Her body relaxed a little and soon they began to converse.
"So you're the cold prince," Katase observed, hand on chin and an inquisitive look.
"I supposed that's what people call me" Kaito stated evenly.
Katase began to look at him, top to bottom, head to toe. Her eyes narrowed ignoring the strange looks she was receiving. Kaito cocks his head not really bothered but not really understanding Katase's intention.
"You don't seem to like it," She said absentmindedly, still scanning the brunette whom had sent a look towards Murayama. She shrugged, equally confused on her friend's action.
"I suppose I prefer people to call me by my given name or some variation of it," Kaito spoke before asking,"Is there something wrong?"
"Huh. No it's you're...different to what I was expecting," Her words were far from what he was expecting, blinking owlishly he asked.
"Do people have some sort of expectation for me?"
Katase seem to take a moment how to best explain. She had her head tilted before answering.
"Well most people called you well cold and apathetic. They think that you think you're better then them."
For every word she spoke, Kaito cringed slightly, a flash of red formed in his visage before he suppressed the feeling.
The water moved.
"Oh. I see, do it really look like I'm doing that," He spoke, taking a deep breath, his tone deceptively emotionless.
Katase not noticing anything amiss continued.
"Kinda, honestly," Her blunt replay came as a brutal blow to Kaito. Murayama stiffened out of view.
"Oh," Kaito seemingly said without much thought which incidentally made his dejection noticeable.
Scrambling for words and realizing that she had perhaps been too blunt. Her mind came up with the best response.
"But hey you sound like a nice guy so...don't take their words too seriously," Katase spoke nervously, her hand scratching behind her head.
As soon as she did, Kaito's expression gradually turned for the better or as better as adding a drop of water to blast furnace.
He appreciated nonetheless, however insignificant it actually helped in recovering his self esteem but, it was still there so that was...good enough he supposed.
Not like he himself is helping his self esteem. Deciding that train of thought is inappropriate for the current moment.
"I see, thank you," Kaito replied weakly, his neutrality becoming more difficult to hold.
An awkward silence befell as everyone was looking between one another seeing which one will break it.
A brown blur suddenly whips in between Kaito and Katase. Her arms wrapping around the both of them.
"Ah um right anyway we still have training to get through" Murayama spoke cheerfully, trying to refocus the others attention. "Let's get those arms moving ladies...oh and man"
Kaito appreciated the last part.
The sound the air wizzing travelled the evening rhythm. Groans and deep intakes of air filled the previously silent room. The natural sunlight brightened the room and the opened shoji provided gentle, cool air.
Everyone was in their own world, everyone except the sole male. Kaito is a rather unique member when it comes to the club. He acts as the most experienced member, giving advice and encouragement to others.
Perhaps a demonstration would be preferable. In truth Katase is still a new member of the club and while she has seen him tutor some of the less skilled members. She has never seen him in a match.
It seems today will give her exactly that.
Two individuals stand before one another, both in appropriate wear, that is the Bōjo. Kaito stood still, his hands gripping the shinai lightly, it's angle centered and forward. His face perfectly still.
The girl opposite to him held a very similar stance and yet Kaito immediately notices the differences. Her fingers grip tightly around the shinai and breaths are quick.
Murayama acted as referee and soon the countdown begins. As the numbers drop and anticipation increases, the eyes of the fighters narrowed.
Time seems to move to a crawl, the falling of sweat cascading one's body and the retracing of muscles.
A beat. A symphony of change.
A falling droplet upon the agitated pond and the wave that calms all. A clear, mirror view bellow, fears, joys, all were pushed back in a world that seeks a clear view.
The call to begin was immediately followed by the flowing of purple locks. The young lady raised her shinai for an overhead strike, her right feet stomped on the ground.
Kaito in response blocked the swing, twisting the stick downwards before rising his shinai to meet the neck protected armor.
It was not the small time it took the match to finish but how effortlessly and precisely the strike of the shinai was that shocked a few. Particularly those whom have yet to see Kaito in a match.
It is as if he had known before, perhaps he truly did. The tensing of muscles and movement of joints. It can leave one exposed to be predicted.
The whistle was blown with the match going to Kaito and yet he however showed no reaction.
The purpose of the match was to observe the purple haired youth's capabilities. She had been previously been tutored by Kaito when she had first arrived and since then has shown remarkable improvement.
However it is clear she had a long way to go, the realization must have hit as she showed a saddened expression.
"You did well," It is as if a switched was flipped, changed to confusion and with a bit of happiness. "You have come a long way Saeko-san," Her smiled turned broader, confidence radiating from her.
The entire evening was left devoting to training matches between other members or guiding them through certain issues. His guidance usually tackles in improving and perfecting the basics. He emphasized control over one's body.
Dawn soon dimmed the orange sky, the end to the day. Within the school practically all activities have ended, goodbyes were said and silence befell the world.
And yet another has risen, a world shrouded in mystery and the hanging moon as its calling.
Perhaps the individual standing on a rooftop has heard it. Indeed, perched on the rooftops of Kouh is Kaito, still wearing his uniform. He stood still as his eyes closed.
Basked in hum of the silent moonlight. Kaito breathed, the cold air cools his body. An unseen force builds within him, it builds and builds. It burns his eyes, it bursts his eyelids and yet he holds.
I am the flame
His eyes then opened, no longer burning a deep hazel brown but with red as blood circling his pupil and iris in radiant blue azure.
That lights the symphony of change
Change is a constant, nothing truly stays the same but one can never truly know when can that change come. The point of origin, the point where everything changed. No one knows the first push.
Authors Note
Hello everyone, I'm Elseworld. This is chapter 1 and also the technical first chapter written in the series. Before anything I want to quickly mention my Wattpad and Webnovel account, Everstoneworld because Elseworld is already taken, I supposed there is no point complaining.
Anyway I'll try and write a consistent schedule but honestly with me trying to get into Junior college and having to do a computing program, I'll be quite busy but I'll try, if nothing else A Life In Blood Haze will have to do.
I'll update it and give you the release date of the next chapter. Also the comment replies will be on my other story A Life In Blood Haze. It's mainly more humorous character interactions. It is canon but I couldn't fit it into the chapter.
Well that is enough for today, have a good day everyone.
