Just Give Me a Chance

The New Assistant Coach

"Coach Seymour, come in for a moment."

Triton Seymour frowned but put his coffee down to walk into the principal's office. Even working in a high school, that never stopped feeling peculiar. To be called to the principal's office. Chiron was a good man though, he'd been the principal for many years even before Triton had come to this school well over a decade ago. They were on friendly terms with each other.

"Chiron?" asked Triton when he sat down. "What is it?"

"I've found a new assistant coach for you," replied Chiron with a smile. "He's going to start this semester. I know you wanted to select your assistant coach yourself, but... I'm sure you're going to approve of my choice. Don't glower at me like that, just wait and see."

Triton huffed out a breath. "Send him to my office when he arrives then."

When he left, he was glowering some. Indeed, he had been meaning to find his own assistant coach ever since his last assistant retired. She had been pregnant and her due-date had been during this summer, so she'd stayed with him through the last semester, but she had made it clear that she would be gone for at least a year because she didn't want to miss time with her baby. Triton understood that. He had three girls of his own, after all. Still, she'd been a talented coach and her personality had matched with Triton's enough to have them get along well. He just hoped that Chiron's pick was going to be adequately trained to do the job.

Percy Jackson had never been more nervous in his entire life. And that was saying a lot considering he'd stood at the starting block for the Olympics twice. But that had been different. Back then, he knew exactly what he was doing. He had experience in what he was supposed to do there. He knew he could do it. Right now? He was facing a new part of his life and was about to do something he had never done before. That was what made him nervous, yet it wasn't all that made him nervous.

"New guy. Who's the new guy?"

Percy turned toward the voice and found a couple lounging together in the teacher's lounge. Percy was now allowed into the teacher's lounge! Because he was going to be a teacher. Oh boy.

"Hi, yeah. I'm Percy Jackson, I'm the new assistant coach."

"Gotta narrow it down further than that, Percy Jackson," pointed the woman out. "Because I'm Reyna and I'm the head coach of the volleyball team. Over there, you have Thalia, coach of the archery team, Silena, coach of the cheerleading squad, and Beckendorf, coach of the football team."

Percy's eyes followed Reyna's hand to link the faces to names. Okay, that was a whole lot of coaches, but then he shouldn't be surprised. Olympus High was the best school for athletes, there was barely anyone on this school who didn't attend it for an athletics program. Only high-class facilities, professional coaches, and so many names who moved on to be successful.

"I'm afraid none of you guys," Percy grinned. "I'm here for the swim-team."

"Swim team... Percy Jackson..." Thalia narrowed her eyes. "Wait, I remember you. In my final year at high school here you were a first year. You made quite the splash. First year, immediately making it onto the swim team and even winning the first race."

Oh. Percy flushed and rubbed his neck. Sure, he was used to being recognized – two Olympic gold medals could do that trick – but to be recognized for high school, a decade after?

"Thalia, wait, you were friends with Annabeth, right? That Thalia?"

"The one and only," Thalia grinned. "Heh, Annabeth. Haven't spoken to her in a while..."

"She's an architect, over in San Francisco, to be close to her family. I'm sure she'd be happy to hear from you again," offered Percy. "Living there with her fiance, Piper."

"So you're the new coach Principal Brunner hired," Silena raised her eyebrows. "Triton's been grumpy about that. He wanted to pick the new assistant coach himself."

Triton. Percy bit his lower lip at that. That was the second reason why he was nervous. Triton Seymour, current coach of the swim team at Olympus High. And Percy's first crush. Maybe more, but it seemed so silly to think that he was in love with his coach whom he didn't even know all that well. Nothing personal, because they'd been student and teacher.

"And where would I find Coach Seymour?" asked Percy, rubbing his hands on his thighs.

"Should be at the pool side. He has an office there and only rarely comes to the main school building," replied Jason. "Good luck with him, don't let him chase you away."

A worried frown marred Percy's features. "Chase me away?"

"He's kind of grumpy," explained Reyna. "But he's a good guy, once you get to know him."

Get to know him? Sounded great. Percy's heart thumped in his throat.

"You know the way or need someone to bring you?" asked Beckendorf.

Him and Silena were unpacking what looked like a feast of a breakfast. Together. Couple? Percy didn't remember so many of the faculty members being paired up during his time and day. Then again, he wouldn't probably have noticed if the science teacher and the math teacher hooked up.

"No. I remember. I'll find my way," Percy smiled at the group. "Thanks. I guess I'll see you later."

"If Triton doesn't eat you alive," Reyna chuckled.

Oh, Percy wished... No, wrong train of thought. His cheeks heated up and he high-tailed out.

Knocking on his office door disturbed Triton's thoughts. Furrowing his brows, he looked up and beckoned the disturbance inside. In came a young man with messy, black hair and sparkly, green eyes. A swimmer's build, for that, Triton had an eye. Something about him seemed quite familiar.

"And you are...?" Triton leaned back in his chair, frowning at him.

"Right. I'm Percy Jackson, sir. I'm your new assistant coach."

"Ah. Chiron said that," Triton didn't look pleased. "He didn't tell me much. Nothing, actually. So, tell me, Percy Jackson, what is it that qualifies you to be my assistant coach?"

The kid deflated a little. Curious. Triton arched one eyebrow at him. What was that about?"

"I'm, I was... I graduated from Olympus High. Went here on a scholarship as a swimmer," Percy wiggled his nose a little. "I went to the Olympics. Twice. Brought gold home both times. After, I decided to become a teacher. I wanted to return to my roots. This school set me on my path."

Mh. Both Triton's eyebrows drew deep down at that, thoughtful. Didn't sound too bad.

"Okay, we'll see how well you do, kid," Triton frowned at him. "Try outs are tomorrow."

/break\

"Papa? What are you doing?"

Triton cussed softly as he pulled his head out of the lowest cabinet in the living room and hit his head on the way out. Rubbing the top of his head, he turned toward his youngest daughter, Pallas. She was twelve and precious. The only one of his kids who wasn't an athlete but rather a bookworm, but Triton had always been careful not to push his own athletic ambitions onto his children. With a heavy sigh did he sit down and pull the book he'd gotten onto his lap.

"Chiron has assigned me a new assistant coach," Triton started and opened the book. "Something about the kid seems familiar to me, but I can't entirely place him. He said he went here on a scholarship, so I'm checking old year books to see if they jog my memory."

Pallas hummed curiously and sat down next to him. Peeking at the book, she watched how her father flipped through it. Nothing in this one, so he pulled the next one. He'd taken five year books that should approximate the years Percy might have been on the team.

"I'll be damned," Triton grunted, pressing his finger onto the paper. "Percy Jackson."

"He looks like fun," declared Pallas.

Triton chuckled and shook his head. "He looks like trouble."

"Father, dinner is ready," called Triton's eldest from the kitchen. "Have you seen Pallas?"

"Ah, you better run and get cleaned up, princess," Triton ruffled Pallas' hair before raising his voice. "We're on our way, sweetie. Just a moment."

While Pallas ran off, Triton looked at the photo for another moment. Oh, he remembered Percy Jackson alright. He'd grown up well, from the teen to a young man. Less of a punk now though. In high school, he'd had an undercut and his hair had been dyed electric blue. Now, his hair was longer and its natural black. Ten years and the change in hair had made it harder, but these eyes. The eyes had been familiar enough for Triton to know he remembered him from somewhere.

/break\

"You didn't mention that you went to this school while I was assistant coach here myself."

Percy looked up wide-eyed. So Triton had recognized him after all? He wasn't gonna lie, he'd been kind of disappointed yesterday, but then they hadn't seen each other in ten years and Triton had trained ten years worth of swim-teams since then so it figured that Percy might have just been one of many students to the man. Against his will, his cheeks heated up.

Percy offered a half-shrug. "Honestly, I didn't think you'd remember me."

"You were one of the most promising students I ever trained. Also one of the most rebellious and troublesome," Triton grunted to himself and shook his head. "I see you changed your style."

The coach motioned at Percy's hair and the blush on Percy's cheeks darkened further. Right, he'd had the blue hair back in high school. Hanging out with the punks at school, first time he'd felt like he fit in. And he supposed he had grown up a lot since then. A decade was a long time.

"I also looked you up on youtube," Triton continued. "Watched you at the Olympics. I see you only honed your skills even more since high school. Now, if you really cleaned up your act, we'll see how well you do as an actual coach, mh? Sit down, we got a lot to go through."

Percy was eager to sit down next to Triton and listen closely to anything the other had to say. He wanted to do good, not to impress Triton, but because this was what he wanted to do with his life. He wanted to become a coach, a good coach, and help shape the future of other kids like him.

/break\

The pool, if possible, was even more impressive than he remembered from his time at the school. Then again, it had been a decade and it figured they'd renovate and keep things at a high standard. Still, it felt like coming home, in a way. Some of his best memories from his teenage years took him back here. And mh. Triton in swim-shorts. He also remembered that very fondly.

"Coach," Percy jogged up to him when Triton waved him over.

"I want you to meet the captain of the swim-team before everyone else arrives and we have try-outs with the new first years," Triton stepped aside a little and wrapped an arm around a girl's shoulder.

She was quite tall, her long, pale-red hair put into a braid. With a smile on her lips did she hold her hand out. Percy was quick to grab her hand and shake it, returning the smile.

"Percy Jackson, new assistant coach. Nice to meet you, captain."

"Triteia Seymour. I'm looking forward to the year and hope you'll contribute to making our team even better than it is," Triteia grinned. "Dad sure can need the help."

Dad? Percy's eyes darted between Triteia Seymour and Triton Seymour. Oh, even their first names. So this was Triton's daughter, huh. So Triton had a daughter. A teenage daughter. A barely-a-decade-younger-than-Percy daughter. Percy would like to just sit down and digest this for a moment but try-outs were about to start and he couldn't have a personal freak out just because his perhaps maybe still crush was actually a real dad, not just a daddy. Oh, he hadn't just thought that, had he? It took all his self-control not to wince at himself.

"I'll help him as best as I can," promised Percy.

/break\

Percy loved Olympus High. The sports facilities were larger than the main school building. Between the gyms, the tracks, the green, the pool, the volleyball team's sand pit. The school grounds were large. Percy knew, the first big team had been the football team back in the 50s and from thereon out, the school made its mark in more and more sports. Generous donations from allumni allowed the growth of the school to make it what it was today.

"I made brownies, would you like a brownie, Percy?"

The smell alone was already mouthwatering, filling the entire teachers lounge. So Beckendorf and Silena were actually married and Silena always made these elaborate lunches for the couple. Sometimes she would bake something – cupcakes, cookies, brownies – and bring them for the teachers' lounge. The two were really cute. Percy had rarely ever met anyone who gave him big 'relationship goals' vibes, but those two did. He was the quiet type, seemed nearly broody because it was hard to read him when he didn't speak up, but with Silena, he was a big, soft teddy-bear. Silena, on the other hand, was a social butterfly, she was very chatty and quickly befriended anyone. She'd been the one to make this school the most welcoming to Percy, now that he worked here.

"These are amazing," Percy groaned and stuffed his face. "Beckendorf's a lucky, lucky man."

Silena blinked doe-eyed as she watched the way he stuffed his cheeks. "Well, looks like you are capable of making a man very, very lucky too, Percy."

Now Percy blinked at her, in utter confusion, until Reyna and Clarisse started laughing. Then, it clicked and Percy swallowed quickly. He stuck his tongue out at the three women.

"Do you?" asked Reyna casually. "Make a man very, very lucky, I mean."

"Yeah, I remember you having a boyfriend in high school," injected Thalia. "What was his face...?"

"Al. Alabaster Torrington," Percy rolled his eyes. "And no, I am not currently making a man very, very lucky. Nor a woman, for that matter. Or anyone else. I'm single."

Clarisse grunted at that. She was the wrestling coach, Percy had met her on his second day here. She was a bit brutish and gruff, but she was Silena's best friend so she couldn't be all bad.

"How are you liking Olympus High so far?" asked Jason.

Turned out he was the librarian of the school's library. And him and Reyna had met right here, on the job. The jock and the nerd. It was really cute, Percy thought. It was also nice to see two couples who worked with each other and made it work too. For some people, it was too much to work with the one they lived with. Put unnecessary strain on a romantic relationship.

"I'm liking it quite alright," Percy grinned and shrugged. "It's... different than what I expected, in a way. I mean, all the... work behind the curtain. The planning for class and for the team are one thing but I mean all the smooching. Relationships with other coaches to set up training appointments, booking hotels and buses and all of that."

"I'm sure you're gonna get the hang of it," Thalia elbowed him gently. "At least you got Seymour to rely on and show you the ropes, mh? He been treating you right."

"Coach's been great," replied Percy without missing a beat. "He's been very patient and he took me along to a meeting last week with other coaches, so I can start making my own connections."

"Aw, I'm glad he's taken you under his wing," Silena smiled pleased.

"His kid's on my team, you know," Clarisse leaned back, a thoughtful frown on her face. "First year, Calliste Seymour. Very energetic, pretty strong. Just needs to learn the technique."

"His... daughter?" Percy frowned and tilted his head. "Uh, how... How many kids does Coach Seymour have? Because Triteia Seymour is on the swim-team."

"You got nearly all of them covered then," Jason looked up at him with a grin. "He has three daughters. Triteia is the oldest, Calliste the middle child and his youngest is Pallas. She doesn't go here, but he sometimes brings her here when her classes ended early and he still had training or classes to teach and she'd sit in the library. She loves reading."

Huh. Percy leaned back more heavily. He'd been startled to meet Triteia, seventeen year old captain of the swim-team. A great swimmer, really. And a whole teenager. But two teenagers? And apparently there was a third kid? It wasn't like Percy had planned some great seduction or anything but he'd be lying if he'd say he had never thought about this. Working with Triton, growing close, having sex in the swim-coach's office. Somehow, Triton having three kids was a bit different.

"What, uh... What about his... Their mom?"

"Subtle," muttered Reyna beneath her breath. "His wife died some eight years ago."

"Lost at sea," added Jason. "Why the interest?"

"Uh, no, just..." Percy cleared his throat, cheeks red. "No reason."

"Very subtle," stated Clarisse this time, one eyebrow raised.

"Wait," Jason looked from Reyna to Clarisse and then to Percy. "Are you into Triton?"

"Wha—at," Percy straightened up, eyes wide. "No way. Nonsense. Totally not."

"Aw, you're so precious, I just want to pinch your cheeks," declared Silena.

Cheeks and ears dark-red, Percy glared at her. He wasn't precious or adorable. He was a fully grown adult now. He wanted to be charming and impressive, to be seen as an equal by Triton in particular.

/break\

Triton was tired. Exhausted, really. Whenever a race came up, he tended to overwork himself in the days leading up to it. And then his regular babysitter had called sick so he had needed to find someone else to watch Pallas. While she wasn't a little kid anymore, Triton still didn't feel comfortable leaving her alone for a whole weekend. Thankfully, Silena and Beckendorf had agreed to take Pallas for the weekend and watch her. Though Triton was not the most social creature, he was glad for the small connections he had made with his colleagues.

"You look tired, coach," noted Percy softly. "Want to take a nap and I take charge of training?"

They'd just checked into the hotel and were about to enter their room – a shared room for the two coaches was the best idea, that way they could plan and talk. Triton grunted as he unlocked the door and pushed in, dumping his bag right away. The room wasn't big, but big enough. Two beds, with a nightstand between them. He rubbed his face.

"I suppose a nap sounds good," agreed Triton reluctantly. "Nothing too hard, but they should get a light training in today. Make sure they also eat good and go to bed early."

Percy grinned and nodded, putting his bag on one of the beds. "Will do, coach."

"I told you, you can call me Triton. We're working together, I'm not your coach anymore."

"Will try to remember it, coach," Percy's grin turned downright cocky.

What a snarky brat. Triton huffed and sat down on the free bed. He'd had a long and exhausting day, he tended to overwork himself before a competition and couldn't sleep because every single scenario ran through his head. Out of the corner of his eyes did he watch Percy leave the room. Only when the younger man was gone did Triton actually lay down on the bed.

"Hey. Coach? C'mon. You need to eat something too, you didn't eat on the bus at all."

Triton grunted and furrowed his brows. When he opened his eyes, Percy was leaning over him, waving a sandwich band and forth, a smile on his lips. He was pretty, like that. With the last light of the day catching in his hair. The sandwich smelt good too.

"Everyone's back in their rooms, hopefully going to stay there too. I charged the captain with keeping an eye on the others," Percy sat down on his own bed. "Everyone got fed beforehand and that was when I remembered that you haven't had dinner yet either. So, I took a sandwich to go for you. I hope you like chorizo and cheese?"

Triton grunted out his answer and sat up more. "Thank you. I hadn't even realized I was hungry with how tired I was. The nap definitely helped with the headache. You did okay?"

"I've been learning from the best," Percy's grin turned more soft. "Everything was fine, it was just routine, after all. The team's in good shape."

Sometimes, it was hard to look at the competent, compassionate young coach he was training and see the rebellious, bratty teenager who'd once been on the swim-team. Then again, the brattiness shone through every now and again. But he'd grown into a handsome young man.

"I'm going to hit the shower. Enjoy your sandwich."

Triton nodded and sat up against the headboard of the bed. He'd come to rely on Percy a lot, which he supposed he had to, what with Percy being the assistant coach. Still, he hadn't expected that. That he'd respect Percy like this, value his input, trust Percy with the team that meant so much to him. And then there were the small things, like this sandwich that Percy had brought because he noticed Triton hadn't eaten, like Percy noticing that Triton was tired and needed a nap.

"Ri—ight. I forgot to take clothes with me."

Looking up, Triton saw Percy with just the towel around his waist. This wasn't any less clothes than he'd seen Percy in during training. But this was different. This wasn't a professional setting, they were in a hotel room together and the pale light of the lamps above made Percy look so soft, as the water ran down his chest. It looked different. He looked different. And then Percy hurried over to the bag on his bed to go through it. Triton couldn't help but drink in the sight. That wasn't good.

/break\

Percy was super nervous. He was pacing in front of the gym. Hopefully, he'd leave a good impression. It would be awful if Triton's daughters like hated him or something, right?

"Jackson," Clarisse grunted as she spotted him. "What's up?"

"Ah. Nothing. I'm just, uh, I'm here to pick up Calliste from training."

Now, Clarisse raised both her eyebrows. "Aw. Picking up step-mom duties, mh."

"Screw you, la Rue," Percy rolled his eyes and turned toward the team.

They were wrapping up training. When he spotted Calliste – the only redhead on the team, so that was easy enough – he waved her over. She looked a lot like Triteia, actually, just broader and more muscular. Wiping her forehead, she stared at him curiously.

"What's up, Mister Jackson?" asked Calliste.

And she immediately knew who he was. Right, she had probably attended races to cheer on her big sister and the name of her dad's new assistant coach must have come up. Great. Now, for that first impression on Triton's second daughter. Percy forced a reassuring smile.

"Hey. Your dad sent me to pick you and your little sister up," replied Percy. "So there was a little accident during training and one of your sister's team-mates... She's in the hospital. Your dad and sister came along with her to make sure she'd be alright, she was really panicky and Triteia si a pretty darn good captain, she was able to calm her some. But either way, he doesn't know how long they'll be and asked me to tell you and pick you and your sister up."

"Ri—ight," Calliste raised one eyebrow. "I'm fifteen. I could pick Pal up on my own."

"Your dad also said you would say that and that the last time you tried to make lunch you nearly burned the house down so I'm supposed to get pizza for you girls on the way home. C'mon."

The promise of pizza got Calliste. "Okay I'll hit the shower. Be ready in ten."

With that, she ran off with the rest of the team toward the shower. Percy turned toward Clarisse.

"What?" Percy glowered. "It's not like that. I'm just the assistant coach. Helping out."

Clarisse snorted and shook her head. "You have a huge crush on Seymour. Even I can tell and I'm no Silena. And now you're picking up his daughters to have lunch with them at his place."

That turned Percy's cheeks dark-red. Okay so perhaps he had been thinking about it that way too, but others weren't supposed to see it that way. His crush was supposed to be a secret!

/break\

There was a special kind of exhaustion that came with ebbed down adrenaline. When Cassie had slipped and hit her head and there was blood everywhere, there had been panic. Even he, as the coach, had experienced panic. Thankfully, she was conscious and they tried to keep her that way until the ambulance came. Training ended early, everyone went home and Triton went to the hospital with his student. And with Triteia, because of course did his stubborn daughter insist on coming along. She was team-captain and Cassie was a friend. So Triton asked Percy for a favor, to go and tell Calliste and pick up Pallas and keep an eye on the girls until he'd be back.

"We're home," announced Triton, his voice tired.

Now that doctors had checked Cassie out, that they got the okay that it hadn't been anything major, Triton was drained of the adrenaline that had kept him going there. Triteia sighed and ran her fingers through her hair to tie it back into a pony-tail in the back of her neck.

"I'm so hungry, I could eat an entire horse," Triteia groaned. "But I am so not cooking. Urgh. Just a sandwich, anything. I'd even eat the bread without anything on it."

"Lucky you that you won't have to eat dry bread. I bought an extra pizza, figured you to would be hungry when you got home too. It's on the kitchen table."

"Thanks, Coach Jackson," called Triteia pleased, heading straight to the kitchen.

Triton blinked wondrously and followed his eldest daughter. And truly, next to an empty pizza box was a full one. With Triton's favorite toppings, he realized when he opened the lid. Another one of these small little things. These things that Percy did that made Triton's heart feel warm. He grabbed a plate and put three pieces on it before heading to the living room. What he found there made him smile softly. Percy, Pallas and Calliste were sitting around the living room table playing a board game. He smiled and sat down next to Percy, while Triteia took a seat next to Calliste.

"Hey, dad. Is Cassie alright?" asked Pallas concerned.

"She will be," Triton smiled and patted her head. "Thankfully, it wasn't too serious. But head wounds bleed quickly and a lot, so it looked much scarier than it really was."

"We're gonna watch movies after the game," declared Calliste.

"It's getting late, you shouldn't hog Percy's time like that," chided Triton.

"Oh, I don't mind. Your kids are pretty great," assured Percy with a broad grin.

As a single dad, somehow, it got much more to Triton when someone complimented his kids than when they complimented him. He'd had flings, over the years since his wife had passed, and some hadn't been 'fans' of children – which in itself Triton always found a weird thing to say. But Percy looked so... at home, right here, playing games with the girls, sitting in Triton's living room.

"We also got brownies," added Pallas as she got up. "C'mon. Help me carry them."

Triteia stuffed half a slice of pizza into her mouth before she got up, followed by Calliste, to go and help their youngest sister. It left Triton and Percy all alone in the room. Turning his head, he saw Percy's profile and how beautiful the other was.

"Go out with me. For dinner," whispered Triton without even thinking on it. "On a date."

"Huh?" Percy stared at him with those large, green eyes. "What?"

"I've been thinking about this for months now. Ever since we stayed at the hotel together, during the first away race," replied Triton. "But you keep doing things, small things, that make me want to kiss you. Which would be less than ideal, when it's at work. And I know things are a bit complicated with you being my assistant-coach and it's okay for you to say no if you're not in-"

"Yes," blurted Percy out, his eyes wide. "Yes. Yes, I wanna go on a date with you. Yes, please."

That made Triton smile softly. "This Friday. I'll pick you up at seven, okay?"

The enthusiastic nod that he earned at that made Triton's smile grow even more.

/break\

The first date was less awkward than Percy had feared and they actually got better with each date, to the point that Percy started to feel quite at home in Triton's personal space. Holding hands, leaning against the other, kissing. More than once, Percy had fallen asleep sprawled out over Triton's chest in the Seymour living room during a movie.

"Very daring of you, coach," commented Percy teasingly, entering the hotel room. "One bed?"

"I thought," whispered Triton, his arms sneaking around Percy's waist to pull the younger man against his own chest. "With how crammed my bed was last time, because someone is a cuddler, I might as well book in a way that'll give me enough space in the bed too."

"Do not underestimate my ability to sprawl out like a cat and need five times the space my body-mass should need," warned Percy, voice playful and light as he went onto his toe-tips to press a light kiss against Triton's lips. "How much time do we have before training meet-up?"

"About an hour," replied Triton after checking the watch.

Percy sat down on the bed. "Mh... You thinking what I'm thinking, coach?"

"Yes, I am," Triton chuckled and sat down next to Percy. "A nap."

Percy made a pleased, agreeing noise before he laid down. They'd been on the bus for four hours to drive here. Triton was glad to lay with him and pull his boyfriend close to kiss him gently. Perfect.

~*~ The End ~*~

Author's note: Aaah Tritercy, I missed them. And something fluffier for a change ;D
