Holy Grail War Saga

Fourth Holy Grail War Arc

Chapter 5 – A Night of Violence

18:40, October 4th, 1994, Einzbern Castle, Outskirts of Fuyuki City, Japan

(Kiritsugu's POV)

In a room inside the german castle, Kiritsugu and Maiya are doing maintenance of their weapons when Irisviel bursts through the door, Saber coming up behind her.

Looking at his wife, Kiritsugu is about to ask the reason for her rushing here when she speaks.

"Kiritsugu, Lancer, and Kayneth are coming!" Iri informs her husband.

The Magus Killer's eyes widen for a second before he gets right down to business. "Where from?"

"The main entrance."

"A frontal assault?" he holds in a snort. Trust a Magus to do something so incredibly arrogant. "Very well. Iri, take Saber with you and meet him there. Saber, lead Lancer outside and keep him from interfering. Maiya, you and I are going to strike Kayneth from the flanks."

All three women nod, though he can see Saber's discomfort with his tactic. He makes no mention of it though and instead grabs a Calico M950 and his Thompson Contender. Maiya herself also grabs a Calico and a Colt M1911. Both now armed, they leave the room to go meet their guests.

At the main entrance (Normal POV)

A few minutes later, an explosion thunders outside, signaling the arrival of Kayneth and Lancer.

"I, Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald, challenge the master of the Einzbern family! Master against Master, Servant against Servant!"

From where they stand at the top of the main hall's staircase, Irisviel and Saber look down at their uninvited guests. The front doors had been destroyed upon Kayneth's arrival, either by Lancer's spears or by the silver blob standing at the blonde's right. Diarmuid himself stands in front of his Master, spears aimed at the floor as he locks eyes with Saber. Both knights are eagerly anticipating their rematch.

"I, Irisviel von Einzbern accept your challenge. Our servants will have to fight outside, though," Iri replies to Kayneth's words with a serious tone. The blonde Magus smiles at that.

"Finally, a proper duel between masters of the Holy Grail war! Lancer, deal with Saber!" Kayneth commands and his Servant obeys.

Lancer slowly makes his way forward as Saber descends the stairs, stepping away from Irisviel. The Servant of the Spear smiles, happy that he gets to finish what he and Artoria started the previous night. The Servant of the Sword herself is happy to get a rematch with Diarmuid, but that happiness is somewhat ruined by how Kiritsugu is using their rematch to gang up on Lancer's Master. Nonetheless, she remains silent. As much as such a cowardly tactic goes against her code of honor, she won't put Iri's life in danger by blurting out their plan to the enemy. Besides, if she is fast enough, she may be able to kill Lancer before his Master dies. With that thought in mind, Artoria leads Diarmuid outside, leaving Kayneth for Iri, Kiritsugu, and Maiya to deal with.

"I will admit I was a little disappointed when I learned that the Einzbern family would be represented by a homunculus again," Kayneth comments. "I was expecting that one of the illustrious Three Families would learn from their mistakes. I may have overestimated your intelligence, it seems."

Unknown to Kayneth, he is surrounded from both sides by Kiritsugu and Maiya. Hidden behind the doors that led to rooms on either side of the main hall, the two assassins ready their weapons. Kiritsugu aims his Contender at the blonde from the left while Maiya aims with her Calico from the right. The blob of silver liquid at Kayneth's side worries Kiritsugu, but he is certain that his Origin Bullet will be able to go through any defense that Kayneth raises.

What the Magus Killer fails to notice though, is that the same silver liquid is slowly flowing next to his feet and is about to make contact with his right boot.

Looking up at Irisviel, who kept her poker face despite his taunts, Kayneth asks, "So, who will attack first, Einzbern? You, me…?" Smirking, the blonde then turns and looks in the direction of Kiritsugu's hiding spot. "Or one of your dogs!?" Raising an arm, Kayneth commands the mercury near the Magus Killer to attack.

Reacting immediately, Kiritsugu rolls back and dodges the strike, which cuts the door he was hiding behind in half. Ending on his feet, he fires an Origin Bullet at the liquid. The bullet passes through it but misses Kayneth.

'My Origin Bullets don't work on it?' the Magus Killer thinks to himself. 'Well, at least I now know that it won't protect Kayneth if I fire at him.'

"Time Alter: Double Accel!" Casting his spell, Kiritsugu quickly dodges another strike from the blob of mercury and leaves the room. With the blob standing in front of the exit that went to the main hall, he will have to go around to get a shot at Kayneth.

Meanwhile, seeing Kiritsugu being attacked, Maiya quickly opens fire on Kayneth. Unfortunately for her, the blonde's familiar quickly rises to form a dome of mercury and block the spread of bullets.

"You using mere guns against my magecraft? How tasteless," the Master of Lancer comments from inside the dome. "Is that all the dogs of Einzbern can do? Use the weapons of peasants?"

Irisviel glares at the shield of mercury that Kayneth is hiding behind, angry that he dares to call her husband a dog. "As a Master of Einzbern, I won't allow you to badmouth our family members!" Pulling out a few feet of wires from a pouch on her right hip, Irisviel works her magecraft and turns them into her familiars. The two eagles made of wires quickly fly around the dome of mercury and dive at it.

Thanks to the fact that they're reinforced, Iri's familiars manage to create holes on the top half of Kayneth's shield. Maiya quickly takes advantage of those openings by firing at them. Dozens of bullets fly inside Kayneth's defense and most of them are quickly stopped by his familiar as it stretches out as fast as it can to protect the blonde. Some of the bullets do pass through though, but Lord El-Melloi had been prepared for a case like this and had reinforced his clothes beforehand. Raising his arms to protect his head, Kayneth shields himself the best he can, the projectiles that passed through bouncing off of his clothes. However, just because he wasn't harmed, it doesn't mean that he doesn't feel the pain of the bullets hitting him.

With sweat forming on his brow, Kayneth bellows, "Enough! I'm done with this!" Casting another spell, Kayneth has his mercury shield split into three parts. One part goes after Maiya and the second rushes down the room where Kiritsugu had been hiding before so that it can combine with the piece of mercury hunting the Magus Killer. The last and the biggest part of his familiar stays with Kayneth, who advances on Irisviel.

"No more games, Einzbern! I will show you what a real Magus looks like!"

Meanwhile, on the courtyard (Normal POV)

Saber's invisible sword blocks the tip of Lancer's red spear and she steps back to avoid the base of his golden spear. The blonde knight uses this opportunity to strike, but Lancer sees the attack coming and moves Gae Dearg to parry Excalibur to the ground. That move is quickly followed by a stab with Gae Buidhe, but Saber jumps back to avoid what might have been a fatal strike.

Both knights took a moment to study each other. Last night, Lancer had learned the length of her sword, and Saber, in turn, learned, rather painfully, the powers of his spears. This would put both of them at more or less even footing, but the fact that Saber can't use her left hand certainly gives Lancer the advantage.

"King of Knights", Lancer starts as he and Saber meet gazes. "Our last fight was interrupted by everyone else. Therefore, I want to finish this the right way." Diarmuid is most unhappy with how their duel was interrupted the previous night. Not only that, but his lord had forced him to aid Berserker in taking out Saber. Doing such had hurt his pride as a knight immensely and, even if he is disappointed in his Master for forcing him to go against his code, Lancer's vow is his word. He vowed to win the Grail for his lord and he will do so.

Nonetheless, he had acted against how a knight should, and he knows only one way to pay back Saber for his slight.

"King of Knights, Arthur Pendragon! I, Diarmuid Ua Duibhne, Knight of Fianna, challenge you to a duel between knights!"

Saber stares at him for a moment before smiling, happy to see something familiar in this war. "Diarmuid Ua Duibhne!" Releasing the invisible sheath of her sword, Saber stands with Excalibur aimed at her opponent. "I, Artoria Pendragon, accept your offer! Let's us fight as knights should!"

Moving quickly, Saber rushes Lancer, forcing him to take a defensive stand. With fast swings, she strikes fast and swiftly at Lancer, forcing him to move back. She is being forced to fight with only one hand on her sword, but that is enough for her; she had a good teacher after all.

Put on the defensive, Lancer blocks or dodges every swing sent his way. He knows that these attacks aren't committed ones, but meant only to confuse him. Nonetheless, he is being forced back as Saber keeps moving forward. And he cannot counter-attack or he will be risking giving her room to strike him down.

Instead, Lancer bides his time and continues to fall back a bit more. Once he has her timing down pat, Lancer jumps to the side and swings Gae Buidhe at the blonde's torso. Forced to stop her assault in favor of blocking the golden spear, Saber allows Lancer to make some distance between them.

The two knights then start circling each other, studying each other once more before continuing their duel.

Back inside the castle (Kayneth's POV)

The battle isn't going as Kayneth had expected it to. Instead of some talented magus similar to the magi that he dueled back at the Clock Tower, he is facing a female homunculus. A female homunculus capable of dodging his Gandr and the attacks of his familiar seemingly without using Reinforcement. Then there is the matter of her wired birds, which are not a creation that Kayneth had seen in any of the magi circles he frequents.

Frowning as the woman dodges another Gandr curse, Kayneth sends his familiar after her while he distracts the homunculus with more shots. The liquid mercury quickly flows down the hallway towards her while she's busy moving around, too occupied to see the mercury taking the form of a spear as it launches itself at her.

However, before the mercury spear can reach his fellow Master, one of her attack dogs, the female one, appears out of nowhere. Not caring about the danger to herself, the brunette throws herself at Einzbern, sending both rolling away as the mercury spear soars above them. Kayneth quickly takes this opportunity to fire multiple Gandr's at the two through a small opening in his mercury shield. Before he can shoot a single curse, however, a sudden flash of light near him, followed by a piercing sound, blinds, and deafs Kayneth.

Screaming in pain as he covers his eyes, Kayneth promises to himself to make the final moments of the two women agonizing.

(Irisviel's POV)

Hearing Kayneth scream, Maiya doesn't waste a moment and starts firing at him. Like before though, his shield moves on its own to protect the blonde and blocks every bullet.

"Maiya, where is Kiritsugu?" she asks while taking cover behind a wall. She quickly pulls out a wire from her satchel and starts making another familiar. The two that she had made at the beginning of the battle had already been taken out by Kayneth's silvery blob.

"Kayneth's familiar is unable to see, so it relies on other senses. I left the part that was pursuing me to Kiritsugu at his insistence," Maiya reported without breaking stride as she continued to fire at the autonomous shield. Running out of bullets, Maiya takes cover beside Irisviel and reloads. "He will be here soon."

Sending her wired bird at Kayneth to keep him occupied, Irisviel smiles even as she quickly makes a second one, happy that her beloved is fine. Her smile then turned into a serious frown. "The moment you see an opening, fire at him." Sending her second bird to join the first, she continues. "Knowing Kiritsugu, he will strike from behind. We need to keep Kayneth's attention on us."

Even though Maiya's face betrayed no emotion, Irisviel could almost feel the pride coming from her. "It would seem that Kiritsugu has rubbed off on you more than I thought, Madam."

"More than you can imagine," she replies with a laugh before commanding her reinforced birds to explode. She had made sure to put more prana into them this time and the small explosion is enough to make a hole in Kayneth's defense. Maiya immediately opens fire on him, but once again none of the bullets reach the blonde as a second layer of the silver liquid covers him.

"You think I will fall for the same trick a second time!?" El-Melloi shouts. "I'm the heir of the Archibald family! You need something more powerful than mere familiars and your pet dogs to defeat me, Einzbern! Do you actually believe mere guns can kill me?"

She could practically feel the smirk on his face. 'We don't need to kill you, you blonde blow hart,' Irisviel thought to herself with a grin. 'Just stall you long enough for the hero to arrive.'

With Kiritsugu

Running down a hallway, Kiritsugu tries to think of how to deal with the silver blob hot on his heels. He had met up with Maiya earlier and taken the attention of the part of silver liquid following her so she could go and protect Irisviel.

Taking a left, Kiritsugu has to admit to himself that he is in a tight spot. The creature that Kayneth created is unable to see, therefore it simply attacks in his general direction, using hearing or some other method to sense him. It is also fast and has enough power to kill him with one hit. But its strategy is basic and can easily be predicted. Normally, the Magus Killer would just need to play a game of cat and mouse until an opening for him to use his Origin Bullet presented itself. Unfortunately, since the familiar has no magic circuits or crest to speak of, his trump card is proving to be ineffective.

'Well, at least there is only one of it', he thinks to himself. The two blobs had joined together after Maiya left him to deal with them.

'Think, Kiritsugu. Kayneth specializes in several different fields of magecraft. This thing must have been created through alchemy. Therefore, there must be a boundary field capable of countering it.'

Getting an idea, Kiritsugu makes his way through the halls and back to the main hall. Running through the destroyed main entrance, he leaves the castle and stops a certain distance from the entrance. 'I hope this works.'

The silver blob quickly catches up to him and the Magus Killer fires several shots at it with his Calico. The familiar ignores the bullets and rushes him. Not moving away from where he stands, Kiritsugu watches as, once the creature clears the main entrance, it freezes. Smirking, Kiritsugu looks at the pentagram below the silver blob, it lighting up with blue light. This is one of the defensive boundary fields that the Einzbern family created as a protection against the fairies and ghosts that live in the forest surrounding the castle. Kayneth, it seems, didn't destroy it when he entered the castle.

'Now I just need to find Kayneth and end this.'

Entering the castle, Kiritsugu hears gunshots and explosions coming from the second floor. Switching his Calico for the Thompson Contender, the Magus Killer quickly runs his way up there.

Upon reaching the second floor, Kiritsugu follows the noise towards the hallway where his wife and associate are battling Kayneth. With the blonde's back facing him, Kiritsugu wastes no time in aiming his pistol and firing the Origin Bullet.

Even though he couldn't see Kayneth and thus aim properly at a fatal body part, Kiritsugu's aim is still true. The bullet travels the hallway at the speed of sound, passes through the silver shield protecting Lancer's Master, and pierces him right through his left lung.

Hearing the blonde magus scream in agony as he feels the effect of his Origin Bullet, Kiritsugu smiles.

"One down."

Back in the courtyard (Normal POV)

Rushing Saber, Lancer tries to stab her with Gae Dearg, but she blocks with Excalibur. Parring the red spear to the side, Saber then tries to cut him across the torso. Lancer brings up Gae Buidhe to block, but it is a feint and Saber instead goes for his leg. Diarmuid quickly steps back and swings at her with Gae Buidhe, but she parries it to the side. Saber swings at him again, but Lancer blocks Excalibur with the shaft of his red spear. Diarmuid once again attacks with Gae Buidhe, but Artoria ducks under the yellow spear. And, using one arm, she brings her sword down with his red spear still under it, tilting the blade downward. Stopping once Excalibur is at level with Lancer's knee, she strikes at it but Lancer steps back and avoids it.

'It was a desperate move,' Artoria thinks to herself, not happy with her performance in this duel. The curse on her hand is proving to be quite bothersome. 'If this goes on the same, Lancer might have a chance to win.'

Their next exchange starts with Diarmuid throwing Gae Buidhe at Artoria. This surprises Saber as, with a precise strike, she can cut the spear in half and most likely free herself from its curse. However, she is stopped from doing so by Lancer jumping at her immediately after throwing his short spear.

'If I destroy his spear, I will be left open!'

Thinking quickly, Saber rolls to the side, letting Gae Buidhe and its owner miss her. She immediately stands up and prepares for another strike.

Lancer doesn't disappoint as he quickly grabs his yellow spear and rushes Saber. The two knights then enter a fast passing exchange of blows, trading going from offense to defense and vice-versa in the same amount of time that it would take a normal person to blink.

And then, Lancer suddenly gets distracted and misses a step, allowing Saber to cut him across the stomach. Both knights stop then, Diarmuid stumbling back and going down to a knee.

Saber looks at her fellow knight with an expression of surprise. "Lancer, what happened?" A knight of Diarmuid's caliber wouldn't miss a step like that. Her eyes then widen as Lancer starts to fade into motes of light.

"Heh," the Servant of the Spear chuckles. "It seems that I have failed my sworn liege once again."

Understanding comes to Saber then and she frowns sadly. "Your Master… My Master must have…" 'Damnation! I wasn't fast enough!'

Even with blood coming out of his mouth, Lancer gives Saber a sad smile. "Yes, my liege must have been killed." He continues speaking even as his form fades by the second. "I would have liked for our duel to have had a definitive winner. But, it seems that we won't ever know who's better."

Smiling sadly in return, Artoria speaks, "Yes, we may never find out. Nonetheless, go with the knowledge that you gave me one of the best fights in my life, Diarmuid Ua Duibhne, Knight of Fianna."

"Your words warm my heart, Artoria Pendragon. I wish you the best of luck for the rest of this Grail War, King of Knights," Diarmuid replies before he completely fades away.

Curling her now healed hand, Lancer's death having broken the curse, Artoria glares at the spot where her fellow knight was just kneeling at.

'Damn you, Kiritsugu.'

18:22, October 4th, 1994, Tohsaka Residence's Backyard, Fuyuki City, Japan

(Desmond's POV)

After dispelling every Bounded Field around Tokiomi Tohsaka's manor, I descend from the sky and land on the backyard. Berserker and Bladedge waste no time materializing themselves once I'm on the ground and we start making our way towards the back entrance.

Taking a look around, I notice that we are passing by the same spot where one of Kirei's Assassins died at the weapons of Archer.

"For a mage, you don't value your life very much, Outsider," a voice brimming with arrogance comments from above.

'Think of the Devil and he shall appear,' I think to myself with a smile hidden by my helmet. Looking up, I see my target for tonight standing on top of the manor's rooftop, his red eyes gazing down on me.

"Do you believe that those dogs at your side will protect you from my judgment?" Gilgamesh continues. "If that's true, then you must be mad."

"A magician always has a trick up his sleeve," I reply. "Now, King Gilgamesh, while talking with you is a delight, tonight I have come not for discussion, but action!"

Conjuring ten swords made of darkness, I send them flying at the golden armored king. Said blonde sneers at me and counters with his own volley of weapons. My swords explode upon impact, destroying his weapons as well.

But that's alright, for my attack was only meant as a distraction.

Having charged at Archer as I fired my volley, Bladedge flies directly at the blonde while Berserker moves up the ladder of platforms I made for him just as fast.

"Are you mocking me, Outsider!?" Gilgamesh inquires as he fires another volley, this time at my two minions.

Dozens of swords and spears rush through the air at Bladedge and Berserker, six for each. Both don't make any effort in defending themselves or evading and, before the weapons can touch them, a fist-sized sphere of darkness moves in between each volley and hero. Both spheres then expand into walls of darkness and the king's weapons are swallowed by them.

"What!? You dare-!?" Before he can finish, Gilgamesh is forced to jump from his place on the rooftop of the Tohsaka Residence. Behind him had been another sphere of darkness and, sensing danger, the blonde jumps just in time to avoid being hit by his weapons as they are fired back at him from the sphere.

Archer's weapons destroy the roof, but that's not of interest or worry for Humanity's First King. He has more important problems, like Bladedge intercepting him in the air.

His arms still crossed in front of his armored chest, Gilgamesh summons two blades from his treasury in front of him in a crossguard. The golden hero's forearm blade is blocked by the golden king's blades and four golden portals then appear around Bladedge. Enchanted spears come out of the portals seeking to impale the Elemental Hero, but Bladedge flies backward and avoids them.

As the golden hero disengages, the black knight comes at Gilgamesh with a sword of darkness in each hand. Floating out of the way, Gilgamesh avoids the attack as he sends his weapons back to his treasury. A second after that, Berserker passes right by the blonde and he wastes no time in opening a dozen golden portals and bombarding the mad dog.

"Do as your king commands and die, mongrel!" Archer shouts. His weapons soar towards Berserker at the speed of sound but are once again swallowed by the black sphere orbiting the Mad Servant. Of course, Archer is not stupid and also opened portals on the other side of Lancelot. The Knight of the Lake, however, uses the black shield the sphere turned into as a platform to jump out of the way of the swords fired at him, which are also swallowed by the mass of darkness. All of the weapons are then sent back at Archer, but he simply opens more portals and they go back to his vault.

Bladedge then comes back, flying at Archer from his right. Before Gilgamesh can move in any way, he feels his body being paralyzed and his eyes widen in surprise and outrage.

Just as Bladedge is about to slice the blonde king's head off, chains come out from golden portals and wrap around the golden hero. Bound by the Chains of Heaven, Bladedge can't do anything as he is impaled by various spears and swords.

Overpowering the force binding him with pure strength alone, Gilgamesh glares down at me as I crouch on one knee.

'As I thought, he is too strong for me to hold with the Shadow Possession Technique,' I think as I watch Bladedge disappear in motes of light. With a mental command, Berserker quickly gets between me and the pissed-off Archer.

"First you dare use my treasures against me. And then you dare to use your magic to make me powerless!" Oh yeah, Gilgamesh is pissed. "Your audacity knows no limits, Outsider! For your crimes against your king, your punishment is death!"

Dozens of golden portals open behind the golden king, bathing the backyard of the Tohsaka Residence in light. Despite the fear I'm drowning in, I can't help but smile.

'Come on, Yubel! I'm not going to get a better shot at this than now!'

My prayers are answered when I hear Yubel's voice through our bond.

[Master, we're ready! Just say the word!]

[Do it!]

Just as Archer is about to bombard me and Lancelot with his weapons, his eyes widen in surprise and the weapons freeze in place due to his lapse in concentration.

"Tokiomi! What is the meaning of this!?" he bellows in rage. At this, I grin behind my helmet.

'As expected, even under the compulsion to kill himself, Gilgamesh is too prideful to obey. No matter…'

Due to his distracted state, Archer doesn't notice the black sphere floating behind the portals directly behind him. Neither does he notice the two cards that fly out of the sphere at him.

"Swords of Revealing Light! Ring of Destruction!" I call out as one card glows a green-blue and turns into six swords of light. The other card glows a dark pink and turns into an iron collar with eight grenades attached to it that snaps itself around Gilgamesh's neck.

"What!? What is this!?" Archer shouts in outrage as he is once again bound and now collared as well. Then, the grenades attached to the Ring of Destruction start to glow.

Behind my helmet, my grin would have made the Joker jealous. Just like the effect of Heavy Storm changed thanks to my Psychic Duelist skill, the effects of the two cards I just used also changed. Well, Swords of Revealing Light didn't change much; its duration just went from three turns to three minutes. Though, against someone like Gilgamesh, the swords lasting for three seconds wouldn't surprise me.

Not that that is a problem though. Three seconds is more than enough for the effect of Ring of Destruction to activate and conclude. You see, much like in the game, this Trap Card uses the power of its target to induce damage. However, unlike in the game, the power used is the life force of the target, and the damage is dealt in the way of an explosion.

Basically, I just turned Gilgamesh, the King of Heroes, into a self-destructive bomb.

As the ring is about to explode, Archer breaks free of the Swords of Revealing Light. I can hear him scream at me and see him motion for his weapons to fire so he can at least take me with him. Unfortunately for him, Berserker and I had already sunk into the shadow beneath our feet.

Coming out of the shadow of a tree on the cliff overseeing the Tohsaka Residence from behind, Berserker and I watch as Gilgamesh, the King of Heroes, the First King of Humanity, blows up in a huge explosion.

As I watch the manor go up in flames and feel Archer's death, I hear someone cackling. It takes me a few moments to figure out that it is me.

"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
