Greg could only stand and stare at the scene in front of him. He had never seen anything like this before. He'd been to so many crime scenes, disturbing and horrific, but none of them were like this one. This one was different; it was…...there wasn't really a word for it. It was like nothing he'd ever seen before.
A young woman sat cross-legged in the middle of the room. Her head hung forward against her chest, her golden hair falling in long delicate curls around her head. There was no visible blood on her body. But that wasn't made the scene what it was. Nowhere near it. It was the walls….the windows….the door. Everywhere it was there. The words….assaulting your mind every way you looked. They followed you, haunting you. Everywhere.
I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU LOVE LOVE LOVE I LOVE YOU LOVE ME LOVE ME LOVE ME LOVE LOVE I LOVE YOU LOVE ME LOVE ME I LOVE YOU LOVE ME
Those were the words. Over and over again. Written in big bold letters. Written in blood, glistening in the morning light, jumping out at you. Greg was transfixed by the sight. He swallowed. He'd been to worse crime scenes, he wouldn't throw up at this one. He felt a hand on his shoulder.
'You okay, G?' Nick had come up behind him.
Greg forced a smile , 'Yeah. Who's the vic?'
'Melissa George. Twenty one. This is her flat, has no known boyfriend according to neighbours. But the words…..'
'Crime of passion? Maybe she had a stalker? Sorry.' Greg said when he saw Nick wince slightly at the mention of the word 'stalker'.
'It's nothing. Lets process it. Just another crime scene'
'You know its never 'just' another crime scene Nick.'
'Yeah Greg, but if we didn't see it that way, we'd never be able to get past our emotions. And then we'd make mistakes.'
Greg nodded.
The two men walked into the room. It was even worse seeing it up closer, Greg found.
He was shining his flashlight around the room when something on the wall caught his eye. He walked over to it. Next to one of the big 'LOVE ME' s was two words, written in blood, but with a different style. They were smaller and obviously not written in as much anger as the previous words. They stated, simply, 'I DID'.
Greg felt tears prick in the corners of his eyes. He'd find the person who killed her. He walked back over to Melissa's body and knelt down beside it. Softly he whispered, half to her, half to himself, 'Okay Melissa, talk to me.'
