Hi everyone,
Here's the next chapter.
Enjoy.
~~∞∞Ω∞∞~~
Previously: "Everything is fine Bilbo. I suspect you will be in labour in the next week."
"Really?" Bilbo asked surprised.
"Yes. In the next week."
~~∞∞Ω∞∞~~ Chapter 19 ~~∞∞Ω∞∞~~
"Wait, no I can't. Not without Thorin."
"Bilbo you won't have a choice. When they come, they will come. Whether Thorin is awake or not. You won't have any choice in the matter."
"But I can't go through this without him!" Bilbo said in distress, panicking at having to go through all of it without him.
"He is still here Bilbo." Balin said coming around seeing his distress and Thranduil left Bilbo with the dwarves. "He is not giving up, so you can't either."
"But…"
"He took a blow to the head so he may be unconscious for a little while but he not near death."
"Balin I…"
"Bilbo rest. All will be well." Balin said as healer started to leave the chambers.
~~∞∞Ω∞∞~~
Just before Thranduil had left the chambers he pulled Oin aside and suggested to give Bilbo something to help him relax and maybe sleep for a bit. There were a couple of safe tonics and teas that Bilbo could have for when he was struggling to sleep or just needed something to help him relax more, with all the resting he had been doing. He also checked to see if they needed any help with Thorin, but Oin had it all under control and there wasn't much Thranduil could do to help.
Oin had one of his healers collect the tea from Bilbo's chambers and make a pot for him so that they could get his panic under control as all it was going to do was make the infant distress. That would just make Bilbo panic even more again at the infant's distress.
Oin was also just in the finishing stages on Thorin's wounds when the healer he sent out returned and gave Bilbo a cup of tea. Bilbo just glared at Oin who stared right back at him.
"You need to relax Bilbo and all your panicking isn't doing yourself or the child any good."
"Seriously the last thing I want is to go to sleep."
"It's not the sleep tonic Bilbo. It's just a relaxing tea."
"I will be cross if it's not the relaxing tea."
"I'm sure."
Bilbo drank the tea and realised that Oin was correct. It tasted just like the relaxing tea and not the sleep tonic. Bilbo slowly finished the cup before the healer refilled it and place the jug beside the bed on the table. Bilbo slowly drank the second as he slowly felt his panic start to lesson and Balin smiled.
"That's better Bilbo. Why don't you lay back and relax and when Oin is finished we will go over what Thorin's injuries are."
Bilbo laid back and Balin and Dwalin stepped off to the side talking low and in Khuzhul so Bilbo could not understand what they were talking about. Dwalin nodded and soon walked out and Balin grabbed a chair and sat beside Bilbo.
"Balin, was this simply an accident or was it intentional?"
"Bilbo…" Balin started to say.
"Don't lie to me. There is no way Dwalin would have left if it was an accident. He and Thorin are close, I know this."
"We don't know Bilbo. Dwalin is going to check on Dis and speak with Nori who is likely scouting the tunnels and places the miners frequent at the end of the days."
"Why would they do that? I know there are dwarves that might not like Thorin's rule but didn't realise they would actually try anything."
"Unfortunately, it is true. Not with the dwarves from the Blue Mountains. Everyone there has been happy with Thorin's leadership there. But some dwarves have come from other kingdoms and we suspect they may not be here with the best of intentions, so we have been cautious."
"That explains now the extra guards in the Royal wing." Bilbo stated and Balin had the decency to look guilty knowing that Bilbo figured it all out. "Thorin said it was normal, but I suspected otherwise but let it be."
"Yes, the extra guards are because we don't know these other dwarves. When the babes have arrived then Thorin will be holding a court and to view every new dwarf that has come to the mountain. Not those from the Blue Mountains but from other clans. Might take a while but that way we know who is in the mountain. It is too difficult right now with the pregnancy."
"Don't worry I am not mad about that. I already suspected it but let it be. I am mad that no one told me that some dwarves were not happy with Thorin's rule. Will I be required at this?"
"Yes, you will but you will be safe. It will likely help with the dwarves seeing you as Thorin's One and Consort. Will help with them accepting you."
"Accepting me?"
Balin went to say something when Oin walked around to their side of the bed. Balin stood and moved back so Oin could get in closer.
"Now I want you to stay calm. If you start panicking again, I won't tell you anymore till you calm down. Understand?"
"Yes."
"Alright. From what I understand he was inspecting one of the mine shafts that was just reopened. He heard something odd and ordered everyone out of the tunnel. As the last dwarrow was leaving the tunnel started collapsing. Thorin pushed the last dwarrow out of the way and got caught in the rock fall. Thankfully there were dwarrow on the either side so we could get him out quickly. He wasn't conscious when they got him out and so far, he hasn't woken. Now he has a broken leg, so I have set that and immobilised it. He will be on crutches for 6 weeks or so, depending on when he wakes. He as quite a few bruises and cuts on his body from the collapse. His head injury is my main concern right now. The sooner he wakes the better. Head injuries are tricky as everyone reacts differently. While dwarrow's have harder heads than any other peaceful race, falling rocks the size, these were would knock out anyone."
"But if he wakes, he should be fine?"
"Hopefully."
"Hopefully?"
"There may be some memory loss. But we won't know till he wakes."
"Memory loss? He could forget me, you mean?"
"There is just no way to know, Bilbo. He could remember everything, he could forget today, the last day or it could be he does not remember the quest or even worse. It is just wait and see really." Oin said. "Now do not fret on this, Bilbo. I want you to relax and rest. That is the most important right now."
"Ok. I'll try."
"Good lad. How are you feeling?"
"Alright."
"Good. I will be back in an hour to check on you both. If you need me before that, send for me."
"I will."
Oin nodded and headed out. Balin moved back in closer and pulled up a chair closer to the bed.
"I'm going to have to go soon Bilbo, but before I do I will organise to have one of the company here to help you in case it is needed."
"Dori is in my chambers with Frodo, right now."
"Alright. You want Frodo in here."
"Yeah. No point trying to hide it from him. We don't…" Bilbo's throat got tight as he tried to speak. "We don't know when he will wake."
"Alright. I'll get a guard to retrieve Frodo and Dori."
Balin got up and headed to the door and spoke to the guard before coming back over. While Balin did that Bilbo turned his attention to Thorin. He stripped to his small clothes and had bandages wrapped around his chest. His legs also had some cuts and bruises along with his broken leg Bilbo couldn't see these now as he was under a blanket, which was pulled up to his chest. His arms were also wrapped in bandages where cuts were. Parts that weren't wrapped, Bilbo could see bruises forming. Thorin's head was wrapped up as it also was bleeding.
"Dori should be here soon." Balin said.
"Thanks Balin. Who's waiting for Fili and Kili? They shouldn't find out from guards or other dwarves in the mountain."
"I'm sure Dis is either down there now or Dwalin or one from the company will wait at the gates for them."
"Oh good. Make sure they know they can come in and see him."
"I will Bilbo. The little one settled now?"
"Yeah much better."
"That's good."
There was a knock on the door, and it opened to show Dori enter and Frodo just raced in, when he spotted Bilbo, and over to the bed. Balin grabbed him before he could climb on and sat him carefully beside Bilbo. Bilbo smiled at Frodo who was staring at Thorin.
"Frodo…"
"Whawt hawppen to Thorwin?" Frodo asked.
"There was an accident. We need to be very careful, as he is very hurt. He's not awake right now." Bilbo said.
"Whwen wiwll he wake?" Frodo asked, tears gathering in his eyes.
"I don't know."
Frodo started crying and curled up beside Bilbo. Bilbo sighed softly and wrapped his arms around Frodo holding him close. Bilbo looked up to see Dori sitting in Balin's chair and looked at Balin who stood beside the bed.
"I will be back later."
"Thankyou Balin."
Balin nodded before heading out. Dori looked upset as well seeing Frodo crying and there was nothing they could do to fix it. They just had to wait till Thorin woke. Bilbo listened as Frodo quietened down and ended up falling asleep.
"How are you holding up Bilbo?"
"I'm ok. Really worried though."
"We all are."
"Thranduil told me I could have the baby within the next week."
"Really? That's great."
"I don't want to do this without Thorin."
"He is still here. You will have all of us as well."
"I know. But I can't help but worry."
"Well try not to. It will make it harder on you." Dori said and Bilbo nodded. "Have you and Thorin decided on names yet?"
"No not really. We were just going to wait and see. We obviously don't know the gender, so we are just going to wait."
"Well I can tell you that when the company hear that it will be within a week before you give birth they will be ecstatic. Especially the boys."
"Oh I know. They keep touching my belly every chance they get even though it freaks them out."
"Hahaha yes I imagine it would since it's not every day you hear a male giving birth."
There was a knock on the door and Dori got up to answer. Bilbo looked over as Bombur came inside the room with a trolley of food. Bilbo smiled and waved him over. Bombur brought the trolley over beside the bed and looked at Thorin behind Bilbo. Bilbo watched as Bombur's eyes saddened at the sight of his King on the bed.
"I brought you lunch Bilbo. One of your favourites."
"Thankyou Bombur."
"How is he?"
"He's alive but badly injured."
"And young Frodo?"
"He's very upset. He just cried himself to sleep."
"What about yourself?"
"I'm doing ok. I am also apparently due within the next week."
"Really?" Bombur asked surprised and excited.
"Yeah."
"Wonderful. I will make sure to bring you extra fresh foods. You will need your energy for this last week."
"Thankyou Bombur." Bilbo chuckled.
"Everyone is excited for the young prince or princess."
"I know. I'm excited to be able to move without feeling like I am an Oliphaunt."
"My missus was the same. I had best head back to the kitchen. If you need anything just ask."
"Thankyou Bombur."
Bombur left and Dori lifted the lids of the trays. There were three meals on the tray. Balin had obviously said that Dori was with Bilbo when he sent down a message for food to be brought to Thorin's chambers for them. Bilbo shook Frodo gently to wake him making him whine.
"Frodo, come on, you need to wake up. Bombur brought lunch and you need to eat."
Frodo slowly opened his eyes and rubbed them. Bilbo could still see they were slightly red from crying earlier. Frodo sat up and looked across at Thorin and he started tearing up again. Bilbo gently wiped his eyes with a small smile.
"It will be ok."
Frodo sniffed and turned to towards Dori so he couldn't see Thorin anymore. Dori shuffled the plates around and sat Frodo's in front of him. Frodo slowly started eating and Bilbo sat up and shuffled himself around so he could sit at the edge of the bed and eat. They sat in silence while they ate. Frodo finished first and shuffled behind Bilbo and started to curl up to Thorin.
"You can lay beside him. Just be very careful ok."
"Yews uncwle."
Bilbo watched him curl up on the bed and shuffle carefully in beside Thorin. Bilbo sighed quietly to himself and turned back towards Dori who gave a small smile at Bilbo for Frodo's actions.
