It wasn't long before the Captain landed by my side, leaning to take a good look at the warehouse door. I glanced around at the lack of squad members.
"Where's the 104th?"
"They're already making their way inside the building. I'll keep an eye on them for a while longer before I catch up. You head back to Eren now. Watch your back."
I turned, shooting him a smile over my shoulder.
"Always do, Cap't."
Vaulting off the tiles, I made my way back to where Eren and Historia were being hidden. Careful not to lead any hiding MP's to the safe house, I took the long way around and soon dropped in front of Sophie. She shrieked in surprise, hands scrambling for a blade.
"Jesus, you scared the Wall out of me!" she exclaimed, humorously stamping a foot on the ground.
I rolled my eyes and joined her on patrol. We strolled around the block leisurely but our eyes darted around for any suspicious shadows.
"Any problems while I was out?"
Sophie shrugged and blew her hair out of her face.
"Jack's somewhere in the sky. Hanji's Rome guy is in there with Eren and Historia, horse and cart ready to go if need be. The other two of hers are on nearby rooves, also ready to move. We haven't had any need to get rid of unwanted guests. Here's hoping it will stay that way."
My eyes wandered the streets, still wary.
"I wouldn't bet on it."
As if on cue, Jack shot overhead and straight into the building, glass shattering at his entrance. Soph and I blinked. If he was in such a rush that he didn't have time to use the door…
My neurons fired.
"Soph! Go in and give Jack a hand, make sure Eren and Historia both get out safely. I'll jump up and pass the message onto Hanji's team." I barked.
Without waiting for her reply, I reeled myself up the wall, with the intention to warn Hanji's team of the incoming assault. However, I was met with a bang, followed by a sharp pain in my lower left leg. I yelled out in pain, buckling and landed heavily on my back before sliding down the slanted roof. I grunted again as my back collided with the rain gutter and I tipped off the edge, ripping the metal gutter from the roof. Gritting my teeth, I triggered the gas cannisters and wires, and managed to pull myself out of the direct line of fire. There was a commotion and the sound of a wooden door breaking, followed by a couple of gunshots. Glancing around the corner, I spied Rome, Hanji's man who had been inside with the 2 cadets, riding out a horse led carriage.
Eren and Historia were most presumably inside.
A throb of pain resonated to my brain, forcing me to tend to my wound. Luckily, it was only a surface wound but had managed to tear a vein, blood continuously trickling from the scratch. Quickly tearing off some of my uniform, I wrapped it around the cut and tightened it, almost biting my tongue off from the pain. More gunshots rang through the area, shoving my adrenaline up high.
"KENNY!"
Levi.
I groaned as I forced myself back onto two feet and hobbled across to peek out. Just in time to see a Military Police officer blast two bullets at Levi.
Shit! My eyes widened and darted as the Captain disappeared in a flourish of green, spotting him just as he slid down the opposite side of the roof, away from the mad man.
"Bastard." I muttered and hurled my own blade at the strange brown-haired MP.
He dodged my attack at the last second, a glint of malice in his eyes as he glanced at me. A quick flick of his wrist forced me to somersault out of the way and behind yet another cover, as the roof where I had been standing was blown to bits. There was a pause and the tinkering of metal, as the officer named Kenny reloaded. Taking this chance, I stepped from the cover, shot a wire across the road and zoomed my way up towards him. Blades brandished, I swiped at his neck as we passed each other mid-air. Raising his empty gun, Kenny blocked it, sliding the blade over his head. Using the same arm, he elbowed me hard. I winced, arching away from the contact. Kenny twisted, bringing his loaded left gun around to my back. Barely recovering, I lashed out with my own left blade, the weapons crashing into each other.
The force jolted the gun, triggering a bullet. The barrel exploded with a loud bang, followed by a ton of smoke, the projectile thankfully missing me. My spare fingers wrapped around the metal barrel and I hoisted myself around, almost as if I were jumping a fence. Using his gun as a pivot, I slammed my feet against his vulnerable shoulder and vaulted off his body. Kenny flew backwards to the rooftops, looking temporarily confused. I was about to aim a grappling hook at him before pair of Interior MPs appeared from the building in front of me.
Tsking in frustration, I retreated, immediately zipping away. However, the MPs gave chase and their reinforcements came sailing in. Shots rang out from behind, blasting into the immediate surroundings, sending shrapnel left and right of me. I frowned in both annoyance and concentration as we soared through the roads. More bullets brushed my left side and I jerked away, temporarily running across the buildings to gain more speed.
I needed a 3 second window if I had any chance of losing them.
A lamp light rapidly approached right in front of my face. Reaching out, I clamped my hands on to it, tensed my arms and heaved myself around the corner. Momentum yanked me down the new road, revealing it to be yet another straight-nowhere-to-hide street. Swearing colourfully, I twitched my fingers. Both grapple hooks flew out and embedded themselves into the brick walls. I halted immediately, bouncing backwards in the air. The unsuspecting MPs shot past underneath. Realising their mistake, both officers twisted in the air, guns swinging round.
But by then, it was too late.
Both of my blades pierced their targets, sending two new corpses crashing into the cobble-stoned street below. With my 3 second window counting down, I hastily made an escape from the prying eyes of the public and of the controlling Military Police.
