A surprise chapter because I have a feeling I may not be able to update consistently in the next coming months :/ Hope this makes up for an extra little wait :)
Enjoy!
There was as split second of silence before the wall pinning down Linda's legs shattered into a mixture of dust and smaller pieces of debris.
"Jack!" I bellowed, crawling back onto my feet and shaking the soreness from my arms.
"I'll be there in just a second!" he hollered in return and took another swipe at his opponent.
Tsking, I ran for the MP he was up against before leaping up and kicking the Military in the shoulder. The MP went sprawling on the ground and I shadowed him, landing on his stomach. Managing to restrain his arms with my knees, I clutched the handle of my blade and smacked him over the head with it. As expected, he went out cold and his limbs went limp.
"Stay down." I puffed and struggled back onto my feet. By now, Jack had succeeded in pulling Linda from the wreckage but unfortunately we weren't out of the woods just yet. Our big hearted comrade hissed out in pain as Jack forced her up, swinging one of her arms around his shoulders. I eyed them worriedly.
"Are you sure you guys are able to make it up the Wall?"
"We'll manage, Rina, don't worry. We've got two Gears to work with. Besides, as long as my arms work, I can work my own 3DMG." Linda reassured, patting me on the shoulder. The sound of a bullet richocheting off the lamppost nearby shook us out of the discussion.
"All for getting out of here?" I questioned, hooking myself up the buildings.
"Aye." My team chorused and we all vaulted up into the skies.
Despite having a massive injury to her legs, Linda still coped with reeling away, with the occasional help from Jack. I focused on keeping the MPs occupied; tossing a few stones their way, shooting a blade over my shoulder every now and again. The air was continuously littered with zooming bullets; most of the missing, a few clipping and unfortunately one passing right through my lower left leg. I shrieked as it happened, dropping a couple of metres before gritting my teeth and soaring back up to a safer height. Jack sent me a concerned look, ignoring the bullet that passed right in front of his face. I flicked my head to the incoming Wall Sina, my face clearly flinching from the new hole in my body.
He got the message. No time to stop, keep moving.
Thankfully, it wasn't long before we reached the Wall and pulled ourselves up it. Brian watched as we did, grabbing a hold of Linda as she staggered onto the top. The group of MPs had ceased to pursuit us, probably assuming those on the Wall would take care of the business. Jack and I finally stumbled our way over the edge, collapsing on the hard surface, panting with effort. With nothing left to worry about, the fatigue swept over me like a tsunami; stemming from my blood loss and from the energy used to get in and out of Wall Sina. As the evening sun dipped below the horizon, so did my consciousness and I fell into a dreamless sleep.
I stirred and the light behind my eyelids lightened up to match my surroundings.
Light but not blinding. Muffled noises of footsteps and conversation. A thin sheet draped over me. A tight sensation over my left upper arm and lower left leg. A heavy weight on my right hand.
I groaned quietly as a slight throbbing pain continued to wake me. Then my memories evaded into the front of my mind, reminding me of our dangerous trip into Wall Sina. After that quick unwanted trip down memory lane, I slowly forced my eyes open and blinked away the blurriness. As expected, I was back in what looked like my second home, an infirmary. The window was covered by a flimsy piece of material, letting most of the morning sunshine in. The door to the room was closed and a another thin curtain wrapped around my bed, giving me some privacy when I slept. The thin sheet turned out to be the infirmary quilt, gently placed over my body. The tight sensations were the bandages wrapped around my wounds, which by the way, were beginning to make their presence known again. Speaking of presence, when I turned to see what was the weight holding down my right hand, I almost choked on the air.
Levi sat awkwardly on a wooden chair beside my bed, his head tilted towards me and his left hand gently clutching my right. However, he didn't move and it wasn't until I spied his closed eyes that I realised he was asleep. My gaze moved down to our connected hands and I was about to move until the infirmary door creaked open.
"Hanji." I breathed and paused when she waved her hands madly at me.
"Don't move, you'll wake him." The scientist padded her way to the other side of my bed, eyeing the Captain. I raised an eyebrow.
"And if I do?"
Hanji shook her head now, her large ponytail mass swinging with her.
"Brian had left you, Linda and Jack on the Wall while he went to locate Levi. Levi was the one you carried you here. Some villagers had helped us find an abandoned building and provided us with enough medical supplies to get you guys through the injuries. You've been out for two days and Shortie hasn't left you since."
I sighed in realisation that Levi probably hadn't slept decently since Eren and Historia were stolen away. Shifting my gaze back over to him and watching him seemingly sleeping soundly on the chair, Haji spoke up.
"I thought he was attached because you had just gotten back from the MPs but I see now that he's really attached."
I chuckled in both embarrassment and annoyance, shooting her a look. Levi's hand tightened ever so slightly around my own and tingles shot through my arm from the motion.
I chastised myself. Wall Rose, get a grip Hazura!
"If anything, that stays between us, okay?" I emphasised, moving my sight back to my sleeping friend.
Hanji covered her mouth but her eyes were erupting with laughter. She escaped to the door when I pursed my lips at her, expectant.
"Whatever you say."
