Coco: Hey, guys, hope your ready for this chapter as we're back to some canon XD At least partially. In this chapter it's focused on Ayumi as she goes to face the hero killer. Hope you enjoy :D
"And it's time to wake up…now," Rina said as her eyes glowed once more.
All three men instantly stiffened while getting defensive. Tomura was even out of his seat and in front of Rina as Stain was looking around in confusion with his hands tightly gripping his weapons.
"What…what happened?" He demanded as he took note to the fact Tomura and Kurogiri were unharmed and that the girl in the chair wasn't cowering behind the bar.
In fact, the girl had a slight smirk on her face. She quiet looked like a cat that just caught the canary. His weapon that Tomura had even disintegrated was still safely tucked away in its sheath at his side.
"Sorry," Rina said to him. "That all must have felt very real, yes?"
Stain narrowed his eyes at the girl as he wondered what her quirk even was. Did she cast them all in illusion? Not, it felt too real to be a mere illusion.
"I hate it when you do that without warning me first, Rina," Tomura complained.
"You should be thanking me," Rina retorted. "Thanks to me, you didn't actually receive any injuries. What happened in there was exactly how the Hero Killer planned for them go too. I didn't create the scene just the space."
Tomura just huffed in return as he retook his seat by the bar. He looked at ease even if annoyed as Stain started to grasp the concept of what happened.
'So, that was all in our heads,' He figured out as he stared at the girl. 'But even then, what I felt…it was all too real. That girl is dangerous.'
However, he was done here and done with these people. He had things he needed to do and they would be of no help to him.
"My business here is done," Stain said. "You will return me to Hosu. There are still several false heroes that I must attend to there."
With a nod of confirmation from Tomura, Kurogiri transported Stain back to Hosu.
"Well, that went well," Rina said. "Did you have fun?"
Tomura shot her a look behind the hand upon his face. Though the girl was so used to them that she hardly even blinked.
"Ayumi, how many times have I told you to stop being so reckless? You could have gotten yourself and others hurt through your actions today!"
Ayumi frowned as she glared up at her father—Jinsoku Kōshoku or as he's better known as by Warp—as he was lecturing her. It wasn't unusual as the man almost always seemed to have something to bitch at her for. It was like he couldn't cut her a break.
"All I did was save a cat from being run over," Ayumi said. "How's that a big deal?"
Kōshoku let out a sigh as he ran his fingers through his silver locks that he shared with his daughter.
"The big deal is that you aren't meant to use your quirk in public." Kōshoku pointed out. "There are laws against such things for a reason. You using your quirk like that had frightened the man driving. It caused him to swerve, which if I hadn't been there to intervene could have led to a wreck. Think of all the people who could have been pulled into the disaster!"
Ayumi did feel guilty about that, but she didn't want the poor animal to get run over. It didn't deserve to die, and it wasn't like pro-heroes thought about saving animals on top of people. No one else was going to help, so she felt as if she should.
"Just stop causing so much trouble," Kōshoku practically begged the girl. "I won't be there every time to clean up after your mistakes."
Ayumi flinched at his words as her hands clenched into fists. It's like all he saw her as was one giant mess. Even when she tries to be like him—a hero—all he does is scold her. Yes, what she did was stupid. She can admit that, but there have been so many other times where she's tried to help…but it was never good enough. Even when things worked out flawlessly. All he did was point out her mistakes…her shortcomings.
"I never asked for you to be here to help me." Ayumi retorted angrily. "I don't need you! Just leave me alone!"
—Knock!—Knock!—
Ayumi gasped shooting up in the bed she laid in with her eyes wide. She then took in her surroundings to see she was in the hotel room Endeavor rented out for her. They've been in Hosu since the beginning of their internship, so Endeavor had rented out a few rooms for himself, the interns, and the few sidekicks he brought along. It was definitely one of the nicest hotel's she's ever been in. Even though her family is pretty well off, they'd never rent out anything this nice, but she guessed when you're the Number 2 Hero that you can afford such luxuries.
When another knock resounded from her door, Ayumi groaned before giving a stretch. She then zoomed in front of the door to pull it open to reveal Shoto standing there. He took in her disheveled appearance as she blinked up at him with tired eyes.
'She must not have slept well,' He thought before speaking out aloud, "Sorry, Jinsoku, but it's time to move out. My father wants to get an earlier start today as we haven't picked up any leads on the Hero Killer yet."
Ayumi hummed in response before she seemed to flicker for a second in Shoto's eyes, but in that flicker, she reappeared well-groomed, in costume, and with a granola bar in hand. Considering it was something he was becoming accustomed too, Shoto didn't question it as he stepped back to let Ayumi out of her room. After shutting the door behind her, the two teens headed for the elevator that would take them down to the lobby where Endeavor was probably waiting.
"You think the Hero Killer might have moved on?" Ayumi questioned as the two walked together. "I mean, he hasn't killed anyone here the last few nights."
"But there haven't been any reports of him anywhere else, either." Shoto pointed out as the two reached the elevator and stepped in.
As Shoto hit the button for the bottom floor, Ayumi, who quickly devoured her breakfast, hummed supposing that was true. She then started tapping away at the gauntlet on her arm, which was actually a small remote device for the glasses she had resting on top her head. The gauntlet lit up and as it booted up, Ayumi lowered the glasses onto her nose in front of her eyes. The glasses glowed before small screens started appearing along the edges with reports on weather and other such things as well.
'Good morning, Jinsoku-san,' A computerized voice greeted Ayumi through the earpiece in her left ear. 'How may I be of service today?'
The system in which spoke to her was an A.I. system of the highest quality. It was developed by a genius developer of Hero Support items known as Tetsubun Genki. He called the system H.A.P.P.I, which stood for Hero Artificial Protection Program Intelligence. Her father had helped sponsor the program and many others of Genki's to the point where father ended up as co-owner of Genki's Hero Support Company. And as Warp's daughter, she had been given access to the system in her own personal devices.
"I need a traffic report for this morning along with all villainous reports from last night after we retired, H.A.P.P.I." Ayumi replied.
'Certainly,' H.A.P.P.I said. 'Sending reports to you now.'
As the reports appeared on the glasses in front of her, Ayumi looked through them quickly thanks to her quirk as it did more than make her fast on her feet. Shoto watched as Ayumi's eyes shifted and moved to keep up with the fast coming reports. She seemed in total concentration that seemed to totally contradict her usually laidback attitude.
"Looks like, there wasn't much villain activity at all last night," Ayumi said. "All the added heroes in Hosu must have them laying low."
Shoto nodded silently as the elevator doors opened to let the two teens step out into the lobby. Endeavor and his sidekicks were waiting or a few were stepping out of the other elevators as the two arrived.
"Oooh, and it looks as if traffic is moving smoothly this morning." Ayumi added as she and Shoto stopped beside Endeavor. "Means an easy run for me."
"Good," Endeavor said. "Because today, Velory, you will be doing a sweep of Hosu. Anywhere you can go without trespassing, I want checked for any signs of the Hero Killer."
Ayumi blinked at Endeavor's words set in. This meant, she'd be on her own throughout the city. Even if he is the number two hero, he wouldn't be able to keep up with her speed, so in reality he's trusting her with a lot. Shoto had a small frown on his face as he looked to his classmate. He knew how capable she was, but to send her out on her own seemed like too much for a student to handle. Especially considering just who they were looking for.
"Of course, I only want you focused on locating the Hero Killer." Endeavor said. "Don't engage in any unnecessary battles. Leave the other villains to Hosu City's hero agency or to us. And once you find Stain, check in with Shoto and then wait for us to arrive. Don't engage until I arrive, understood?"
"Yes, sir." Ayumi replied.
This was a big responsibility. Endeavor was trusting her with a lot, but she wasn't about to mess it up. She'd get it right for sure.
'And that'll shut up the old man for sure,' Ayumi thought to herself. 'No one is going to be cleaning up any mess of mine ever again. I'll handle everything on my own. I'll show him.'
Over at the Nighteye's hero agency, Ayano sighed as she was looking at her phone during her break. She was in one of the training rooms on the agency's grounds and taking a break from her quirk training exercise with Nighteye and Mirio. She had decided to check in on everyone, and while almost everybody replied…Tenya was among the few who haven't. Ever since their talk at the hospital, the boy has practically avoided her or cut their conversations very short. She could only guess he was worried about what he'd pick up inside his head.
'He's probably just busy,' Ayano tried to tell herself.
Though she could guess what he was doing, and it probably wasn't his internship. Not completely anyway. Ayano was then distracted from her thoughts as Ayumi shot her a message. Ayano opened it while smiling when she saw Ayumi had sent her a picture of her and Shoto as they were standing behind Endeavor who was looking irritably over his shoulder. Probably at the fact his interns seemed to be goofing off.
Under the picture it read: 'Doing good here. Hope you're having fun!' Ayano almost chuckled when seeing the stark contrast of the three's expressions in the photo. While Endeavor looked annoyed, Shoto's expression remained the same as it always is, and Ayumi had a large grin on her face. Ayano then shot back a quirk reply before Nighteye called out to her.
"Ishida, we're going to run it again," Nighteye said.
"Yes, Sir," Ayano replied as she placed away her phone in her bag.
She would just have to try later to reach out to Tenya. She was sure with his Pro-hero mentor around that he'd be fine. She just had to remain positive. Nothing too troubling could go wrong.
'Could it?' She thought.
Rina sighed as she watched Tomura scratch at his neck aggravatedly. He's been doing so since the Hero Killer's departure late last night, and it was starting to get on her nerves.
"Tomura, instead of sitting around stewing, why not do something to quell your annoyance?" Rina questioned. "I mean, didn't you ask Master for those Nomu for a reason?"
Tomura, who paused in his scratching, seemed to think about it for a second before turning his attention back to Kurogiri.
"Yes, we're going after him," Tomura said. "I'm not done with him yet. Illusion or not, I won't let him get away with how disrespectful he was."
While Kurogiri tried to get Tomura to reconsider, Rina let out a sigh and a shrug. She should have known this would happen, and Kurogiri should have known it as well. It was obvious from the start that Stain and Tomura were two completely opposite forms of nature that wouldn't bend for the other. Besides, once he asked the Master for the Nomu, she and Kurogiri should have been ready for this. Besides, she was tired of his moping hence why she kind of egged him on. She didn't like seeing Tomura mope.
"You might as well do as he says," Rina told their older companion. "You know there's no changing his mind when he gets this way."
Kurogiri sighed though nodded his head as Rina was completely right. Tomura always did what he wanted and rarely ever changed his mind once set. Kurogiri then warped his two young responsibilities to where the Hero Killer was in Hosu City. Rina wheeled herself out after Tomura from Kurogiri's wrap gate and immediately frowned when seeing they were on a water tower. Not the place she wanted to be while stuck in her wheelchair. Sometimes she really missed the use of her legs.
"Hosu City looks nicer than I expected," Tomura commented as Kurogiri closed his gate to stand behind Tomura and Rina.
Stain was crouched in front of the trio while overlooking the city that looked so peaceful in the light of the setting sun.
"So, what are you going to do?" Tomura asked Stain.
"I will reform it." Stain stated. "In order to do so, blood must spill."
Rina blinked at the guy as his long tongue wet his lips, which had her grimacing.
'And Tomura tells me I have issues,' Rina thought to herself.
"You have a clear goal," Kurogiri said. "Your dedication is admirable."
'I'd say more obsessive,' Rina commented silently.
She kept her mouth shut, however, as she wasn't here to pick fights. Even if she did decide to do so, it'd be a bit unfair. The Hero Killer wouldn't stand a chance. If she was playing seriously that is.
"Ah, finally somebody who understands," Stain said as he stood straight.
"I get the feeling you enjoy picking on me," Tomura grumbled.
'Well, it is fun, so can we really blame the guy?' Rina thought to Tomura.
The light-haired boy shot a glare towards his white-haired companion who looked to be fighting off a smirk. He's just making her point, so there was no need for her to comment further.
"Hero is the title for those who have accomplished great deeds." Stain declared. "This city is full of false champions. All they care about is money and fame. Until this world realizes its mistakes, I will continue my work."
He then left the trio behind to continue said work as Rina let out a sigh. The guy was definitely something, but she wouldn't say she's impressed. Sure, his conviction as Kurogiri is something to admire, she supposes. If only their Tomura could find something for him to hold onto besides his blind anger and hate towards All Might. There's nothing wrong with him wanting to kill the Symbol of Peace as it's part of their goals in the long run, but he's so focused on that piece of the plan so much that he never seems to see the bigger picture.
"He talks all high and mighty and stuff, but he's wasting his time focusing on a small stage," Tomura said as he scratched at his neck. "He's so noble I could cry."
"You shouldn't spurn his methods," Kurogiri cautioned. "The reality is that in all the cities Stain has appeared the crime rates have fallen. Perhaps because heroes are more conscientious, or perhaps out of fear."
Kurogiri's words only seemed to agitate Tomura more as the boy started scratching his neck even more. At this rate he was going to make himself bleed again.
"Regardless, he does bring change," Kurogiri finished.
"Oh, isn't that just wonderful?" Tomura cooed sarcastically as he turned towards the city. "Heroes are working hard because of all those murders. I guess you could say our Hero Killer is also a Hero Breeder."
"I have to agree with Tomura on this one," Rina said. "How are the heroes working harder making things any better for us? If anything, it makes things harder and gives us even smaller room for error."
Kurogiri held back a sigh as he looked to his two younger companions as they crossed their arms in unison.
"This is getting boring," Tomura complained. "It won't work. We just can't agree on a basic level, and he annoys me. Kurogiri, bring out the Nomus."
As Kurogiri did as told, Rina wasn't so sure about all this. The Nomus weren't exactly things for them to play with, and she didn't understand the point in bringing them out as taking out Stain could easily be done by the three of them. There was no need to make such a scene. But she said nothing as she knew it wouldn't deter Tomura. A part of her almost felt bad for the heroes of Hosu. They won't have just Stain to worry about tonight but terrors as well.
Ayumi sighed as she was doing her fifth sweep of the city today. All other times have turned up nothing for her, and it was starting to get dark. But she wasn't about to give up. She couldn't return a failure. She'd hate herself forever…and an eternity on top of that. Ayumi then stumbled mid run when the ground seemed to shake underneath her as the sound of an explosion was heard not far off. She came to a skid halt while turning her head to see smoke billowing not far from her location. Another explosion and tremor followed, which had her frowning.
"H.A.P.P.I, talk to me." Ayumi said. "What's going on?"
'It would appear several villains are attacking,' H.A.P.P.I replied. 'Bringing up feed from a traffic camera now.'
A video started to play on the goggles before her, and her eyes widened when seeing the creatures in the video. They resembled that Nomu creature from the USJ incident.
'The League of Villains?' Ayumi thought. 'What are they doing here?'
She then frowned because she knew Endeavor told her to ignore any other villain activity. He told her to focus only on the Hero Killer. But when she heard the screaming and the panic, it was hard to just forget it and move on.
'A hero wouldn't just move on,' Ayumi said as she started running again. 'But…'
Ayumi's thoughts trailed off as she rounded the corner to see the goliaths in front of her. They were much larger than the other Nomu and one had even the ability to fly.
"The hell…" She murmured as the pros on scene tried to deal with the monsters while helping the fleeing citizens.
She then zipped out of the way when a bus came hurtling in her direction. As she was still running, she spotted one of the pros had been knocked down in the direct path of the black Nomu. The creature took a swipe at the pro, but with Ayumi's speed she was able to snatch the pro-hero up and move him to safety, which left the Nomu swiping at empty air.
"Who are you?" The pro asked as Ayumi helped him sit down on the sidewalk behind the other pros.
"Velory." Ayumi replied. "I'm an intern at the Endeavor Agency. Endeavor brought us here looking for the Hero Killer. Wasn't expecting these guys though."
Before the guy could ask her anymore, Ayumi heard a familiar voice call out to her. Ayumi turned her head seeing Izuku, who was in costume, which puzzled her.
"Deku, what are you doing here?" Ayumi asked.
"It's a long story." Izuku replied. "I'm kind of shocked to see you here too. Does that mean Todoroki is in the city as well?"
Ayumi nodded her head before the two teens flinched when another explosion went off behind them.
"You two need to get out of here!" One of the pros shouted at them. "We'll handle this! You evacuate with the others!"
Ayumi supposed she could get behind that. Well, the whole leaving the Nomu to them as she had a Hero Killer to find. With all this noise going on, he'd easily be able to slip by unnoticed.
"Jinsoku, have you seen Iida?" Izuku asked. "He's interning here in Hosu!"
"Yeah, I saw him earlier when I was zipping through the city, but that was hours ago." Ayumi said. "Why?"
"Because he's not with the hero he's internship with." Izuku replied as he pointed.
Ayumi turned her head to where Izuku was pointing to see Manual…and Tenya definitely was not with him. Ayumi instantly realized where the teen might have disappeared to, which would explain Izuku's panic.
'Almost all of us were worried this would happen,' She thought to herself.
Most of the class had been concerned when hearing Tenya's pick for his internship, and it would seem as if their worst fears were becoming reality. This makes her job finding Stain all the more important.
"Alright, I'm heading out." Ayumi said. "I haven't had any luck finding Stain all day, but I won't fail this time. Not when there's a chance our class rep might be in danger. You can try to follow, but I won't be taking it slow. Message you when I have an update."
She then zoomed off leaving Izuku to try and search on his own as he knew he wouldn't be able to keep up. Ayumi checked the alleyways thoroughly nearby as she hoped Tenya wasn't far. And just when she was about to expand her reach, she finally spotted who she was looking for. She saw Tenya and he was on the ground along with another person as the Hero Killer loomed over them.
"H.A.P.P.I, send my location to Shoto and let him know I found him. Oh, and Deku too." Ayumi said before zipping in to attack.
She hit the Hero Killer head on sending the man flying backwards as she came to a firm stop in front of Tenya. Said boy looked up at her with wide eyes as she let out a breath.
"You've made me have to look for you all day, Hero Killer." Ayumi said to the man as he regained his bearings. "You know how much food I had to buy to replenish myself for that kind of run? Guess it doesn't matter though because I found you."
She gave a cheeky grin as she said this though her heart pounded loudly in her chest. She wasn't supposed to engage the guy in a fight. Endeavor had been quite clear about that, but it wasn't as if she had a choice. If she waited for them to get here, Tenya and the pro behind her could get hurt or worse killed.
"Jinsoku," Tenya said. "What are you doing here?"
"Endeavor brought us here for our internship." Ayumi replied. "He and Shoto should get here soon with a bunch of other pros, so just hang tight, okay?"
Tenya went to protest but Ayumi went running at the Hero Killer. Tenya shouted at her for to stop, but she went on and managed to hit the Hero Killer again on the side. He slammed into the wall, but managed to get out of the way as he jumped up onto a ledge when she turned to get her bearings.
"Another child." Stain said. "And what are you doing, huh? If you insist on fighting me, you'll end up just like your friend and the so-called hero."
Despite the bloodlust curling off the man's words, Tenya watched with wide eyes as Ayumi smirked. She looked completely fearless as she faced the Hero Killer with her back straight and head high.
"Oh yeah?" Ayumi asked as she jutted out her chin defiantly. "Well, I'm not going anywhere. Not without them. If I left them behind to save my own skin, I wouldn't be able to face myself in the mirror every morning. Let alone call myself a hero. Besides, the fun is just beginning, Stain. I'd hate to run off so soon when I just got here."
Her words were relaxed and maybe with a hint of bravado. It was a good act, but that's all it was. She was worried—scared even. Sure, she was one of the fastest people around, but didn't make her invincible. And she knows what this man has done to pros. She's just a first-year student without not even a full semester of hero training under her belt. But she wasn't about to abandon the fallen behind her. And she couldn't grab them both at once and get away in time.
"So, how about it, Hero Killer?" Ayumi asked as she looked up at Stain. "You ready to go toe to toe with me?"
Stain stared down at the girl whose words dripped with false confidence. He could see the fear in her eyes—the trembling in her fingertips despite her best efforts to control her movements. But despite her fears, she planted herself firmly between him and his prey. Her conviction to stay and face him evident. He felt himself grin.
"Perhaps there are still a few true heroes amongst us after all." He said.
He then drew his weapon and, in a flash, leapt towards Ayumi who tensed up ready for action. She didn't have to beat him. All she had to do was keep him busy until help arrived. She could do this. She wouldn't fail—not this time.
Coco: Cliffhanger! XD This chapter hit my usual 4,000-5,000 word limit I put on each chapter, so I cut it off here. So, it looks like Ayumi is going to get another chapter or at least half a chapter more of "screen time" to shine. Now, telling you now that she isn't going to steal the thunder from Shoto, Izuku, and Tenya. They'll all face Stain together and be awesome together. Ayumi just got there first XD Anyway, I'll see you next update. See ya~
