Knight's Way

Gather round us now an' hear, this one fine story of old;
Hearken to my voice, an' let the tale unfold.
A long, long while ago there was an aspiring knight,
He joined the nearest knightly guild, hoping soon for his first fight!

But he was to learn that it wasn't all,
To fight and kill and maim
Those beastly beasts outside the gates
that no man yet can tame.

He came with sword, his shield and lance,
And the elders kindly stored them away,
They replaced in this bewildered knight's hands
Quill and paper to teach him knight's way.

If you asked a certain fox or the birds alone
You might have heard from them,
One early morning on the rise
This knight put down his pen!

The wise brave knight burst forth the gates,
Fresh and ready was he,
Many long years and many long hours
All studied and trained for the world to see!
But his guardian fae had other plans,
And rested her soft hand atop his head:
She spoke to him of secret things
Until slowly home he tread.

A dear old mother, and father too,
Surprised but joyful all the same,
Greeted the knight with expectant smiles
To hear of their son's sure fame.

But gone was his shield, and sword and lance,
Replaced by a quill behind one ear,
He felt his fae's steadfast presence and drew
Courage, his task startling clear:

"Please, mother, father dear
I beg you heed me now!
I left here with only my knighthood dream
I return with only a vow!"

His voice grew strong, yet gentle and wise,
As he swore his life away,
"To rid the land of evil and war,
And to teach everyone of the knights way!"
