Authors Notes: Apologies for the long delay folks a lot has been going on in my personal life not to mention planning out new stories to write so haven't had time to update my stories. However I'm back and now lets continue, now the title maybe different but the plot follows the Carmen Sandiego season 1 finale. With some minor tweaks.

:The Bitter Reunion Caper:
Dr.M's POV:
On the lone remains of the Kaine Islands on the South Pacific ocean. Lay the remains of the destroyed vault belonging to the Cooper Clan. A battle took place here for possession of the treasures and knowledge that lie within. Suddenly a hand emerges from the rubble, and the rest revealed it was Dr.M bruised and battered but alive. He looked around and saw his desires in rubble before him.
"I was considered an intellectual equal, a gifted individual, until I fell in with Connor Cooper!" Dr. M narrated.
In a flashback scene it shows a younger Dr.M with the original Cooper Gang, he stood with Jim McSweeny and Connor Cooper (Sly's father.)
"I stood alongside him and his muscle and together we pulled heists of incredible grander. However overtime I began to see Cooper for what he and his family really was an attention grubbing, selfish and egocentric! I was always second best to him!"
Dr.M stood in his lab as he looked on his computer in his lab. He saw a clipping regarding the recent murder of Connor Cooper at the hands of the Fiendish five. He smirked in anticipation.
"His arrogance lead to his end at the hands of Clockwerk and where he fell I would rise to claim my rightful glory! By seeking out the stash of his family and take it for my own!"
However when Dr M arrived on the island he examined the vault and saw it was protected by a combination lock. That only a Cooper could open.
"However when I found the vault, the infernal fools descendants made it so only one of their bloodline could open! But I wouldn't be denied what was rightfully mine!"
So for so many years he worked to open the vault with drills, missiles heck transforming the island around the vault into a fortress. He became obsessed over the vault. He looked over blueprints and the design to find a weakness, but nothing.
"Despite years of painstaking efforts, I was no closer to my goal!"
However when he looked at a news broadcast about a recent string of crimes he took a keen notice in the headline. Which read. "Sly Cooper escapes capture in Cairo!"
"…but then an opportunity presented itself, when I learned that Connors son was alive, and running his own gang! I would not only claim what is mine but also show the world how much of a glory hog the Cooper Line really was…"
Years later a battle takes place in the interior of the Cooper Vault. Between the Cooper Gang and Dr. M, said doctor was in a mechanised spider mech that was connected to the metal cogs on his brain. He fought against Murray and Bentley the latter he thought he could consider an equal but he was wrong. Then facing Sly who practically jumps in the way of a laser blast to protect Carmelita.
"Years of planning and clues left by my old associates and new partnerships. All to lure Sly Cooper to the vault to gain the key and the treasure within. Even someone I considered my equal wouldn't side with me despite like me he was considered second! Yet he sides with the attention grubbing Cooper!"
Suddenly during the fight the Vault begins crumbling around them and while Carmelita and an amnesiac Sly escaped as did the rest of the gang Dr. M was left behind seeing the very jewel of his desire be destroyed.
In the present day Dr. M looked with a vengeful scowl seeing the vault and its treasures gone and in ruins.
"The fool made a foolish effort to save a woman cop! Someone he actually loved. Who then robbed me of my prize as it crumbled around me! They all believed me to be dead, but miraculously I survived broken but alive! Since that day I vowed my vengeance, that one day Cooper would pay and suffer for robbing me of my prize!"
End of POV
Isle Of VILE:
Within the inner sanctum of the V.I.L.E Academy, the Faculty and Dr. M met to discuss his and Dr Bellum's recent discovery from the key card Paper Star stole from Carmen and Sly who stole it from a certain Interpol Agent. Dr.M stood at the right side of the Faculty table as they began the presentation.
"So, do tell us, Dr. Bellum and Dr.M, who in the world is this Chase Devineaux?" Gunnar asked as the main screen lowered in front of them. Bellum and M displayed some stats about Chase Devinaux and the mints he eats.
"Formerly an inspector of Interpol, Any current assignment is completely unknown." Bellum explained.
"Indeed Mr Devineaux was quietly transferred from his department in Poitiers, France, nearly six months ago." Dr M continued. "Which seems to coincide with the loss of a certain relic of yours Countess?"
"Poitier!" The Countess suddenly realised. "Where I keep a residence?"
They had a flash back to when a certain thief in red had broken into a large residence house. This happened sometime before she met a certain ring-tailed thief. "The very residence looted by Carmen Sandiego nearly six months ago." Maelstrom began to connect the dots. "Coincidence?"
"I do not believe in coincidences Gunnar." Dr M simply said as he walked in front of the faculty in a deductive way. "A simple question, what else did VILE lose that night?"
Just then Brunt realised what the Monkey scientist was talking about. "Monkey boys right! Devineaux was there that night. Black Sheep delivered Crackle to him on the train to Paris, wrapped up all pretty with a bow."
A flashback of Crackle dressed in Carmens coat as Devineaux arrives to remove the hat and sees its not the lady in red. But rather Crackle before his capture.
Then it was Cleo's turn as she recalled her own encounter with Chase Devineaux. "This Devineaux also barged into my Swiss chateau during a dinner party, distracting me long enough to allow Carmen Sandiego to make her escape with my precious stolen Vermeer paintings in tow." She said recalling how Devineaux crashed her party and to finding her vault completely empty with a certain calling card in the shape of a raccoon wearing a red Theodora on it.
"And to think I had suspected the charming duke of being their inside man." She regretted remembering the charming Duke who was really Zack in disguise.
"Then it seems that we have discerned a pattern, one which explains how Carmen Sandiego and Sly Cooper has repeatedly foiled our plans with such a high rate of success." Maelstrom began to realise.
"They aren't working alone." Bellum realised.
"I'm afraid there is more to it than this recent revelation my dear Dr Bellum." Dr M explained.
"What do you mean?" Shadowsan questioned.
Dr.M then explained his own findings. "I trust you've all read Dash Habers report regarding out little, 'casino mishap' in Monte Carlo?"
"Of course." Cleo remembered.
"Well it seems that Cooper & Sandiego have gained help in the form of some old friends of his." Dr. M explained as he motioned the screen to the next slide. Which showed some pictures and stats of Sly's crew.
"Allow me to introduce you to the other members of the Cooper Gang." Dr M explained.
"A tortoise and a hippo?" Cleo said confused.
"Actually Cleo the bespectacled one appears to be a turtle." Bellum explained examining the photo.
"Yes that is Bentley, the brains of the group and the clear lead." Dr. M explained before moving to Murray. "This big fellow is Murray, Coopers enforcer and muscle."
Brunt just scoffed at the sight of this muscled bound enforcer. "Heh! He doesn't look so tough I've rounded up bulls larger than him."
"Don't be fooled by his large bulk, my dear coach. Murray has made thugs as terrifying as you crumble before him." Dr. M explained.
"Be that as it may Dr M why would you share this with us and what pray tell does it have to do with Chase Devinaux?" Gunnar wondered.
"If you will allow me to continue." Dr M explained as he moved the slide along to reveal the picture of a certain foxy Interpol officer from another dimension. "This is Inspector Carmelita Montoya Fox, like Cooper and myself she comes from another dimension and an inspector at Interpol."
"Hm, despite the fox like appearance, I must say her fashion sense is rather…striking?" Cleo said looking at the fox inspectors choice of clothes.
"Yes, she was there during said mishap in Monte Carlo." Dr. M continued. "But the point is, Cooper has one weakness, he cares too much, like our former Black Sheep but heres the best part. For you see she and Cooper have a rather romantic attraction to each other."
"SAY WHAT!" Brunt exclaimed.
"A thief and a police woman? Sounds rather inconceivable." Cleo said rather dumbfounded.
"Yes but when you threaten what you hold most dear, and he ignores his better instincts." Dr. M explained in a hinting way.
Professor Maelstrom was beginning to see where their ally was going with this. As it seems did Brunt. "Sounds to me like we have ourselves a plan B, as in "bait."
"Indeed my dear Coach Brunt." Dr.M smirked.
Cleo looked at the side by side visuals of both Inspectors Fox and Devineaux. "Catch Chase Devineaux and this Carmelita Fox, and we finally catch the elusive Carmen Sandiego and rid ourselves of this Sly Cooper."
"We'll put Paper Star on the case. She led us to ACME, after all." Maelstrom motioned.
"No Gunnar." Dr.M then interrupted. "I shall attend to this myself, it's high time Cooper knew of my presence and maybe even get acquainted with our dear Black Sheep."
Shadowsan however was rather indignant on that statement. "This is not child's play." He said. "We do not know if Black Sheep and Cooper have partnered with a rogue policeman or a high-level law enforcement agency."
The Faculty and Dr.M looked towards the ninja master. "Then whom would you suggest we send, Shadowsan?" Gunnar wondered. Shadowsan stood up before he gave his answer.
"I will go." that very suggestion surprised the whole faculty, and even Dr.M but Shadowsan just bore a serious expression knowing it was time to deal with this problem once and for all.
Meanwhile:
In a disclosed location Devineaux now wearing a turquoise and pastel coloured jacket decorated in lucky cat pictures. He was with Carmelita and Julia, as Chief was giving the incompetent Chase a scolding. Given their recently failed mission to catch a couple of certain thieves.
"Agent Devineaux, you are a walking disaster zone! First, you somehow managed to water-log not one but two ACME-issue vehicles." Chief said in a rather unhappy tone. Given the recent events and property he wrecked. "Do you have any idea what fully loaded, custom Blanton-Websters cost?"
"Uhhh…" Before Chase could answer that Chief continued. "And when you're not turning our automobiles into submarines, you're losing keycards loaded with classified intel and proprietary technology." She said holding her hand to her face. "Please tell me you still have your communicator pen in your possession?"
"Uh yes Chief." He said as he opened his jacket showing said pen inside his inside pocket before closing it.
Chief had only just noticed Chase's change of jackets. "You joining a K-pop band?" She asked.
"I was cold it…was on sale." He answered given the destruction of his jacket at the hands of who he assumed was Carmen. But in actual fact was Tigress he just didn't know it.
"Yeah it was all he could find." Carmelita pointed out much to Chase's irk.
With that out of the way Chief moved onto new business. "Stand still." She instructed as Agent Zari pressed a button on a remote.
Out of the ceiling came what looked like a scanner which scanned the three agents. "ACME's virtual tailor. You've all been fitted for regulation suits." She said displaying a visual scan of the three of them in the same ACME suits.
She then looked to Carmelita "By the way, Agent Fox, though your first mission may not have been a success, as far as, Sandiego and Cooper are concerned, but exceptional work recovering that ten million dollar Black magenta stamp."
"Thank you Chief just doing my part for a safer world." Carmelita said humbly.
"Oh and another thing fine work securing the Magna Carta, Agent Argent." Chief praised Julia also. "Saving the symbol of democracy. Now there's a career maker!"
Julia perked up smiling at the praise and Carmelita was smiling glad to know she was getting much deserved recognition. "I… did not do it alone." She said looking to Chase who all but scowled.
Minutes later Chase slams the door open in anger and slams it shut behind him. Revealing they were in a parking garage in Poitiers France. Soon after Julia and Carmelita followed the moody agent.
"Whats eaten you?" Carmelita questioned.
"You did not do it alone, eh?" Chase quoted as he looked at Julia a little angry.
"Of course not. You are my partner." Julia said to him but Chase knew she wasn't talking about him or Carmelita.
"Do not be coy, Ms. Argent!" Chase snapped. "I know you were referring to La Femme Rouge and The Blue Raccoonus! Your silent partners."
Julia had just about enough of Chase and stood right in front of him. Carmelita was beginning to get annoyed by Devineaux's incompetent pride.
"And? What if I was? Carmen Sandiego and Sly Cooper left the Magna Cartas on my train seat, presumably for me to find." Julia stated her case. "They returned stolen Vermeers to museums and ten-million-dollar postage stamps to children's charities."
Carmelita just couldn't believe what she was hearing. However she remembered how Sly told her he was trying something new. Chase however wasn't convinced.
"Stealing things only to return them makes absolutely no sense." Chase dismissed unconvinced.
"I agree, which is why I do not believe she's stealing these things to begin with." Julia theorised.
"She has a point, where I'm from the people Cooper steals from are also common criminals, even members of crime syndicates." Carmelita agreed siding with her.
"Stealing from criminals?!" Chase said in disbelief. "What kind of thief does that? And would they be returning stolen things to show that they can do my job better than me? Simply to make me look like some sort of law enforcement imbecile?!" Chase then said.
Carmelita couldn't believe what she was hearing, he was making this all about him. Julia was in quite a disbelief too. "Why must it always be about you?" Julia protested.
"Maybe you should be the one to tell me since you are clearly Chief's favourite." Chase said getting in Julias face.
By this point Julia had just enough of this. "Ugh! You are impossible!" She said as she stormed away.
"Julia!" She called but she stormed off. The foxy inspector had finally reached her limit with this idiotic excuse for an Interpol Inspector. "You have a lot of nerve you know that!" Carmelita said to Chase rather angry.
"Oh don't you start, you have one good deed recovering a tiny stamp and now suddenly you're Chiefs favourite too!" Chase exclaimed to her.
"GAH! Julia's right you are impossible! At least I'm not the one who charges in without thinking and goes sinking cars to the bottom of the bay!" Carmelita argues back. "Its a wonder why you made it as an inspector at Interpol at all?"
"Excuse me!" Chase exclaimed. "You have the nerve to question my law enforcement status!"
"Oh shut up. I've only known you for a day and I'm already annoyed by your incompetence!" Carmelita exclaimed. "You focus more on Sandiego than you do the evidence that points her to the crime! You know I was much like you only focusing on the thief in the room instead of the facts and I made mistakes because of it!" She remembered accusing Sly of stealing the Clockwerk parts in Cairo when it was the Klaww gang. Then of course theres the matter of how he rescued her from Clockwerk, despite thinking he would leave her.
"Oh so you believe this crazy theory of stealing things only to return them?!" Chase argued back.
"Yes I do! Because where I'm from, I've seen criminals and schemes that defy rational explanation!" Carmelita exclaimed. "You on the other hand just dismiss the relevant facts and jump to idiotic conclusions! Do you even pause to consider things at all?!"
Chase just scoffed at that. "Oh please this from the fox lady who couldn't capture an escaping Ringtail!"
"GAHHH I've just had it with you! Do you even factor VILE into any of your thinking!" Carmelita exclaimed before she stormed off.
"You mean the non-existent entity that our chief has been trying to prove exists for 20 years?" Chase exclaimed to her. "At least I have seen Carmen Sandiego and Sly Cooper with my own two eyes. And they're out there somewhere, no doubt planning something nefarious at this very moment."
Elsewhere:
"Player, what have you got for me?" Carmen asked while wearing sunglasses.
Because in actual fact she was wearing a red and black bathing suit with a black and red sun hat and white sunglasses. She was sitting with her knees close to her chest on a deckchair. Under a beach umbrella.
She was at a tropical beach somewhere, after the caper in San Francisco, the gang were in need of a much needed vacation. So by Zack suggestion they decided the best bet was Hawaii.
"Itching for a caper already, Red?" Player questioned. "After one-upping your ex-instructor, I figured you'd finally be ready to take that well-deserved vacay."
"He has a point Carmen." Said Sly who sat up from his own deck chair. He was wearing a blue and white Hawaiian shirt with dark brown shorts and a straw sun hat and black sunglasses. He wore flip flops on his feet. "I mean haven't you heard the term, work hard play hard?" He tilted his glasses.
"Chilling makes me fidgety. And, trust me, Shadowsan's already plotting his next move." Carmen said knowing VILE never takes vacations. All the same the crew seemed to be enjoying themselves.
"Hey, guys, check it out!" Called Ivy and the two looked and saw she had built a sandcastle that looked like something VILE would stay in. She wore a dark blue bathing suit with a green shirt over it. "VILE Central. Wicked wicked, right?"
"Not bad Ivy, it's very accurate to what VILE would use as a base." Bentley said as he came over in a red stripped top with brown flip flops. His wheelchair tires were more fat to cope with the sand.
"Thanks Bentley like the tricked out chair!" Ivy admired.
"Thank you I've made a few modifications to it over the years." Bentley said.
"WAHOOOOO!" Zack cheered as he was in a wet suit surfing on a wave. He was losing his balance. Ivy looked up in shock as the wave was coming over her.
Bentley knew where this was going so he pressed a button on his chair that generated a rather large umbrella from the back of his chair as he scooted near Ivy. The wave hit them washing away the sand castle. Bentley was dry with the umbrella ringing wet. While Zack landed on Ivy. She shoved him off as Carmen and Sly watched.
"Zack what the heck!" Ivy exclaimed to her brother.
"Sorry sis but it was an awesome wipe out!" Zack shrugged. Before Bentley lowered his umbrella he noticed something.
"Oh dear. You two better brace yourselves." He said to them.
"CANNON BALL!" Murray in green shorts ran down the beach and jumped into the sea with an almighty splash which covered the three. Zack was covered in seaweed while Ivy had a seashell on her head.
They were soaking wet as they looked to see Murray's upper half was sitting in the shallow sea. "Great form Murray." Ivy said sarcastically.
"Ptoo yeah I'll say!" Zack said peeling off seaweed.
"Sorry guys but The Murray can't resist making a splash!" Murray said excitedly.
"That parts an understatement pal." Bentley said.
Carmen and Sly watched from afar and the Raccoon thief just smiled and chuckled to see the crew enjoying themselves. Carmen did crack a small smile but was still wanting to get back into the game.
"Hey come on Carmen, it'll be a while before VILE can make another move." Sly then insisted. "It wouldn't hurt to relax every once in a while."
"Sly I was raised on a tropical paradise, not my idea of R&R." Carmen said.
"Okay I'll grant you that but even I know when to unwind between jobs. Why do you think my skills are so sharp, besides VILE aren't going anywhere any time soon." Sly then explained.
"All the same, Player you sure there's nothing else you can turn up on the hard drive?" Carmen then asked Player.
Players Room:
Player was working to decode the hard drive, however the problem was it had been months since Carmen snagged the Hard drive from VILE. At this point there was only so little data.
"It's been a while since you snatched it from VILE. We've pretty much combed through every last bit on data on here, Red." Player relayed to the two.
"So in other words without that we're just flying blind?"Sly confirmed.
"Pretty much Sly." Player explained.
Hawaii:
"You know how did you snag that hard drive anyway?" Sly asked.
"Simple years of crime school training and careful planning. It wasn't easy getting that hard drive from VILE's book keeper." Carmen said.
"You mean the one you kept bombing with water balloons?" Sly asked.
"Yep thats the one Cookie Booker." Carmen smiled.
"You know me and the guys played a similar prank on our matron back in our orphanage days." Sly said.
"Ah yes operation water bombardment, that was a carefully laid plan." Bentley said as he came over to see them. "Up to the point where we got grounded."
"Yeah but it was worth it." Sly shrugged.
Player's Room:
"Yeah but now that hard drive is all but empty." Player said. "You may need to sneak back to the Isle of VILE and bring the rain all over again."
Hawai:
"Hm sounds like a challenge, busting into a crime school." Sly thought.
"No." Carmen said taking Sly by surprise and he saw she looked deadly serious. "I am never going back to VILE Island."
Sly could see she meant it, and he couldn't blame her given the stories she told him. Some good, some bad, but mainly bad ones. Because after escaping VILE she wanted to explore the world that she was being denied for so long. The thought of going back just didn't sit with her.
"Okay… well I'll work with Player and look at other avenues we can exploit." Bentley then decided. "We may not have Thief Net here but we can still find other means." He then wheeled away.
Sly then decided to change the subject. "Hey while Bentley does that whats say we see who's more skilled on the Volleyball court." Sly got up from his deck chair.
"No Sly I don't think thats for me." Carmen said still sitting down.
"Oh come on loosen up, you could pretend the ball is one of the Faculty?" Sly tried to encourage her.
"No." Carmen shrugged even the thought of pretending the ball was one of her teachers would help. So he tried a different move.
"Oh okay I understand if you're scared you'll be schooled by an equally skilled master thief." Sly then teased.
That defiantly got the lady in reds attention. "Hold up who said I was scared?"
"I did, you want to prove me wrong little lady?" Sly smirked teasingly.
Carmen just smirked as she got up from her deck chair. "Oh please I'll beat you one handed ring tail." She said as the two ran to play some volleyball.
Isle of VILE:
Meanwhile on the island a helicopter was starting up on the launch pad. The Cleaners were in the cockpit getting ready to leave. Shadowsan was at the stairs to the helipad armed with a long sword katana.
The rest of the Faculty were present. "Are you absolutely certain the field trip is necessary, Shadowsan?" Maelstrom asked. "We have an army of operatives to choose from."
"Our Carmen Sandiego and Sly Cooper problem must be tied off decisively, once and for all." Shadowsan said looking to the Faculty before he started to climb the stairs. "It is time that they contend with one of our own in the field."
"I do concur Shadowsan." Said a voice and then Dr.M appears and approaches him. "Which is why I shall accompany you on this little field trip."
Shadowsan wasn't going to allow this. "No, I do not need help in this assignment."
"I don't recall asking permission, remember I still have a score to settle with the son of the thief who betrayed me!" Dr.M said in a dead serious tone. "and trust me you don't want to come between me and my vengeance!"
The two stared each other down, with death glares, well M had razor sharp teeth exposed. However in that moment. "I agree with both of them 100 percent." Dr.M looked surprised as did the rest of the Faculty who looked rather surprised it was Brunt who said that. "That's right, for once. I'll go."
Shadowsan looked rather disagreeable with that idea. "Absolutely not!" He said. "The coach is too soft towards her dear Black Sheep."
"I agree with him whats to stop you from hesitating?" Dr. M agreed.
"At one time that statement might've been accurate doc." Brunt said as she approached the two on the stairs. "But after she went and betrayed the only family she knew, Black Sheep is dead to me. And Carmen Sandiego must pay! Not to mention this Ringtail varmint needs to learn its not nice to interfere in the affairs of VILE."
Maelstrom just smirked at that statement as he looked to his fellow Faculty. "Well, all in favour of both Shadowsan, Dr. M and Coach Brunt attending to this matter?"
The majority of the faculty Coach Brunt included raised their hands and as always majority rules. Much to Shadowsan's annoyance as he grumbled.
"You two can have Sandiego, Cooper is mine!" Dr. M said.
"Oh and how do you plan to do that then doc? They stick to each other like glue?" Coach Brunt asked.
Dr.M just smirked in her direction. "Tell me have you ever heard the term divide and conquer?" The monkey scientist hinted.
Paris:
Night had fallen on Paris, in a lone apartment building Chase was speaking out loud.
"I cannot stand the sight of you!" He exclaimed. He was scolding himself in a mirror. "You are only good for wrecking cars and bullying your partners." He opened the cabinet to pull out a green tube of toothpaste and a tooth brush. "Ms. Argent is only trying to do her job. She cannot help it if she is misguided. Although, she may wind up running ACME someday." He then said with a little empathy.
"And Carmelita, she's new to this but I can't deny she has experience when it comes to criminals. Plus I do admire her dedication. I should be nice and bring them Napoleons from the patisserie tomorrow."
He began brushing his teeth however as he did the paste started foaming up. A lot more than normal toothpaste. Even Devineaux was surprised. "Wow foamy?" He said surprised. He looked at the toothpaste and on it he saw a certain V logo on it. All of a sudden he began to feel drowsy and in an instant collapsed to the ground.
The door to the bathroom opened to reveal the Cleaners dressed in black dragging Devineaux out of the room.
Elsewhere:
Meanwhile Carmelita was taking her rage out in her own apartment. Since joining ACME she knew she needed some residence until she could return to her world. So Chief pulled some strings and got Carmelita an apartment, and thanks to the present she got from Sly she was able to blend in. Her jacket was on the couch as she paced the room venting her frustration.
"Gah! That Devineaux is the worst. Interpol Inspector indeed! Police clown is more like it!" She vented as she paced the floor. "Huh, in a way he does remind me of myself when I was like that, maybe I should try and get along with him for the sake of Julia at least. Julia clearly has more potential in law enforcement, and she knows to trust her instincts. I should probably invite her to coffee to get to know her more."
Just then she heard a knock on the door. She slipped on a certain bracelet and twisted it. Her hologuise took on the appearance of a human woman with tanned skin a slender figure with brown eyes and maintained her normal blue hair. Her clothing was the same.
She opened the apartment door and to her surprise there was no-one there. However when she looked down, she saw a small box. She picked it up and looked at it. It was white, upon opening it she found a small green bottle of perfume.
"Perfume?" She said surprised, she also found a small note inside. It read.

"Free sample?" Carmelita wondered. "Hm, strange, but who am I to decline." She then took off the lid and sprayed it on her a few times.
She sniffed the perfume and it did smell nice. "Hm thats a nice smell." However all of a sudden she felt rather drowsy herself. "h..hey wh..whats going.." She then collapsed to the ground, and the thud had deactivated the hologuise, revealing her true form.
Sometime later appearing in the hallway were the Cleaners who then carried Carmelita away on Boris's shoulder. They took her down to a white van and tossed her in the back with Devineaux next to her as they drove away.
Meanwhile:
The sun had set on the beach, and watching the ever-glowing sun set. Carmen now in her shorts and denim jacket sat with Sly who was in his normal blue sweater and grey pants as they watched the sun go down. They embraced the sea breeze on their faces.
"Now you gotta admit, Red thats one beauty of a sunset." Sly said to his partner in red.
"Yes it is." Carmen said. "You know your right, maybe it isn't so bad to take it easy, I may finally be unwinding."
"I wouldn't get too comfy just yet." Said a voice and they looked to see Bentley rolling up with a rather grim looking face.
"Whats up Bentley?" Sly asked.
"Well maybe Player should explain." Bentley said bringing up Player on his tablet.
"Bentley's right, we were poking around on the deep dark web to see what I could scrape up, and I stumbled on a message for Carmen." Player explained. This got Carmens attention instantly.
"Whats it say?" Carmen asked.
Player then read back the message he found on his computer. "If Carmen Sandiego wants to see her partner Chase Devineaux again, she needs to surrender."
Carmen and Sly were rather confused. "Partner?" Carmen wondered, then suddenly it dawns on them. "The keycard!"
"So I was right Paper Star must've swiped it back in Agra city, they probably think Chase is working with us." Sly realised.
"I'm afraid it gets worse, theres another message attached, for you Sly." Bentley then explained.
"For me?" Sly wondered.
"Yeah, it says…" Bentley was gulping at this part. "If Sly Cooper wishes to see his beloved Carmelita again, he will come to Cathedral Saint Pierre in Poitier. Alone."
"WHAT!" Sly breathed in shock and horror, how could VILE have found out so soon about Carmelita? "But how did VILE know about Carmelita?! I swear if they hurt her I'll…"
"Sly." Carmen said standing up putting a comforting hand on his shoulder. "We won't let anything happen to her, but if VILE has Devineaux too, they'll never let either of them walk away."
"It smells like a trap." Player motioned.
"I agree, they're both being held in Poitier in different locations." Bentley realised. "They're splitting you up so you'll both be easy to handle."
"Of course they are, which is why we'll need to be cautious." Carmen said. "Sly you and your crew help Carmelita we'll handle Devineaux."
Sly wasn't too sure about this whole scenario. "Carmen are you sure, I mean I know Carmelita can handle herself but if VILE is behind this I don't like you going in alone."
"I know, but you know that Carmelita doesn't know VILE, but we do, and VILE doesn't let prisoners go." Carmen said. "She needs you Sly."
Sly did find this compelling, on one hand he knew Carmelita could handle herself in a tight spot with most criminals. However on the other hand VILE wasn't like most criminals and wouldn't be so forgiving with her.
"Okay. Let's do it." Sly finally agreed.
"Now, Player where are they keeping Devineaux?" Carmen then asked as the two walked away from the sea and set to work.
Somewhere in Poitier:
Chase groaned as he was stirring from his unconscious state. He found himself handcuffed to a chair, in what looked like someone's basement. He couldn't remember how he got there.
"Bonjour." Said a voice. He looked and saw stepping out of the shadows was Coach Brunt and Shadowsan. "Hard way or easy way?"
Chase thought these guys were with ACME and this was some kind of secret meeting. "Uh, is this where you appear to issue my replacement keycard? Very funny!"
The two Faculty members weren't buying it. "Spill it Sugar. ACME."
"Uh, ask you what?" Chase said mishearing what the brute had just said.
"Not ask me ACME! I've seen your keycard." Coach Brunt explained. Shadowsan proceeded to unfold his arm from his robe and bring out his sheathed long sword.
"What can you tell us about Carmen Sandiego and Sly Cooper?" He then asked.
"Why ask me? You two thugs work for them do you not?" Chase said in assumption.
Brunt could see that oblivious inspector was playing hard to get. Even if she didn't know he wasn't allied with Carmen or Sly. Regardless however she moved to unpack a large box looking case they brought. Chase was rather nervous thinking that was some kind of torture box.
"W..wait must we do this the hard way?" He said nervously.
"Oh, no, handsome." Brunt smirked evilly facing him. "The easy way with a little something we like to call "the truth extractor." She pulled out a helmet looking device which she placed on Devineaux head which hummed into life.
Chase could feel it trying to read his mind and tried to fight the influence. "No no no no!" He struggled.
However unbeknownst to anyone they were being watched by a certain Red Drone who was watching from outside.
On a roof not too far away was Carmen, Ivy and Zack. They hid behind the chimney as they watched from afar. Carmen was in her thieves attire. Just then Sly called in.
"Carmen where are you guys at?" He called.
"We've just set up, Red Drones on surveillance you?" Carmen answered.
Meanwhile Cathedral Saint Pierre:
Sly now in his thieves attire, was on a building rooftop looking at Cathedral Saint Pierre. He looked through the Binocucom for any signs of VILE agents in the area. Strangely however, there weren't any.
"I'm just looking at the Cathedral, but so far no sign of any VILE goons." Sly said just then he zoomed in on one of the bellowers and saw Carmelita was tied up and gagged on the tip of it. "But I do see Carmelita."
Bentley then tuned into the Binocucom from the Team Van. "We can't take chances Sly, If VILE's as good at concealment as Carmen says chances are they're waiting nearby to spring a trap."
"Yeah I know Bentley thats why I need you on your toes." Sly then said.
Meanwhile back with Carmen Ivy managed to link up with Red Drone. "Got a visual, Carmen." Then suddenly emanating from the controls speakers was a rather loud voice which seemed to be, singing? "And audio." Ivy said.
Sly, Bentley and Murray heard that noise on the end of their communications. "What in thunder is that noise?" Bentley wondered.
"And you guys criticise me when I'm singing in the shower." Murray said.
In the cella, Devineaux is singing something in french while fighting the influence of the Truth Extractor. Brunt and Shadowsan seemed unfazed by what the former inspector was singing about.
"What is he crooning about?" Brunt finally asked.
"It is the French national anthem." Shadowsan explained. "He is attempting to cloud his mind to keep from telling the truth."
Brunt then got up in Chase's face as he continued to resist. "I'd spill the beans, sweet pea. Prolonged use of this device is not recommended." Brunt warned. "The longer it clings to your brainpan, the more you risk it permanently scrambling your eggs."
Despite this Chase just kept reciting the anthem. Having just about enough of his singing. Brunt merely shoved a rag into Devineaux's mouth to gag him. However he kept reciting in mumbles.
"Give it a minute. He'll be singing our tune." Brunt said smirking.
Carmen looked at the monitor of Red drone controls seeing the survaliance. She instantly ID's Shadowsan and Coach Brunt. "Faculty field trip." Carmen said to her group and Sly's on the coms.
"So the teachers finally step up to do the job themselves huh?" Sly said on the coms.
"Yep Shadowsan and Coach Brunt." Carmen said. "We'll need to even the odds."
"Carmen you sure you should be doing this by yourself?" Sly then asked on the com. "I mean if these guys are as bad as you say?"
"Sly its sweet of you to worry, but I'll handle it you focus on saving your girlfriend." Carmen said.
Elsewhere:
Sly watches the cathedral as he listens to his teammates. "She has a point Sly." Player agreed.
Finally Sly had to sigh in defeat. "Okay just watch yourself."
"Same to you partner." Carmen said before signing off the coms.
"Okay Bentley I'm going in." Sly said as he leaped from the building he was on and slid down the cables then leaped onto the next rooftop as he approached the cathedral.
Meanwhile:
Back in the cellar Chase had finally succumbed to the Truth Extractor. "ACME is a covert surveillance organisation, dedicated to learning everything."
"About what?" Shadowsan questioned.
"Ha! Something that probably does not exist." Chase simply laughed.
"Try us." Brunt said crossing her arms.
"Sounds like "bile."" Chase simply said. This caused Shadowsan and Brunt to exchange glances with each other. This all but confirmed their suspicions, they were trying to find VILE and prove it exists, which could compromise their ability to stay hidden.
"And what exactly do they know about this "bile"?" Brunt asked in an interrogating way. All of a sudden the two heard a tapping sound on the glass. They looked and saw a small Red Drone banging the the distance they made out the silhouette of Carmen Sandiego who ran from the scene.
Coach Brunt was taken by surprise while her ninja colleague bore a deathly serious expression. "I will attend to this." He ran out of the cellar before looking back to Brunt. "Find out everything he knows."
Shadowsan ran out of the room leaving Brunt with Devineaux. However she wasn't one to stay put, much less take orders from the likes of him. "Who went and made him the boss of me?" Brunt said before looking at Chase. "Sit tight, sweetie."
She left the room as Chase was left disoriented from the helmet.
On the rooftops Shadowsan gave chase to the escaping thief in the red coat. They leaped from rooftop to rooftop. Strangely however Carmen was down in the street, if so then who was Shadowsan chasing?
Brunt had just exited the building and looked around, and leaned on the metal gate. "Now where did old stoneface disappear to so fa…?" Suddenly she noticed a certain thief in red, run across the street. Brunt crushed the metal railings with her immense strength.
"You'll do." She smirked as she gave chase.
Back on the rooftops the Carmen that Shadowsan was chasing was actually Ivy wearing the same red coat and hat with a wig. She quickly leaped from the chimney as Shadowsan was catching up.
Brunt was in the streets hunting for her quarry. Hiding behind a street building the second Carmen was Zack wearing the same disguise as Ivy. He was a little nervous.
"Oh, red is so not my colour." Zack breathed. He ran down the street and into an alley way which he discovered was a dead end. Much to his horror.
"Uh oh!" He grimaced as he looked back and saw that Brunt was coming.
Brunt came up to the alleyway, seeing it was completely empty. Nothing but the bins and trash cans. She looked around with no sign of her prey. Little did she know that Zack was holding onto a drain gutter above her hiding out of sight.
"Whew." He breathed a sigh of relief. Suddenly the pipe was jerked away form the wall much to his surprise. He looked and saw that Brunt was below and ripped the pipe clean off the wall.
"Oh, no." Zack grimaced. Brunt slammed the pipe into the ground and Zack fell into the trash pile. Brunt approached the thief in red. However before she could get a good look.
"THUNDERFLOP!" Cried a voice Brunt looked up and saw slamming down from the air, was Murray who landed in front of the disguised Zack.
"Not so fast! You want her you gotta go through the Murray first!" Murray challenged raising his fists.
Brunt while startled by the giant hippo's appearance just smirked. "Oh ho ho I do love a challenge!" She cracked her knuckles.
The two stared each other down, then charged at each other. Brunt swung her fists at Murray who dodged them then landed an uppercut in her head. Brunt was pushed back then charged straight at him, grabbed him by the shirt and slammed him into a wall.
"You have no idea who your dealing with pinky!" Brunt cackled.
"The Murray, has heard that line before lady!" Murray growled as he pushed Brunt away she tried to throw a punch only for Murray to jump and roll into a ball performing the aboriginal Ball form he learned from the Guru. He used the advantage to kick Brunt in the back and sent her crashing into a wall.
"The Murray is triumphant!" Murray exclaimed.
He went over to Zack who was barely conscious. "Zack you okay buddy?" He asked but before he got an answer something hit the hippo on the head. It was a metal trashcan which did make him dizzy. He turned round just as Brunt grabbed him by the shoulder, and landed a punch in the gut knocking him down then a double fisted slam to his back knocking him to the ground.
"You got me down Hippo boy, I'll give you that, but you never lower your guard." Brunt smirked.
However her victory was short lived as she now got a good look at the thief in red and saw it wasn't Carmen just an orange haired man in a disguise. This meant one thing.
"Bait and switch!" She growled. "Sorry sweetie I'll have to finish this rodeo some other time." As she took her leave Murray groaned unconsciously.
Meanwhile:
Sly had just arrived on the rooftop of the cathedral, he saw Carmelita tied up to the bell tower. He approached slowly and saw she was unconscious.
"Good call on sending Murray to back up Carmen and the others Bentley." Sly said.
"We'll I didn't want you to worry." Bentley said. "Just be careful."
Sly nodded as he approached Carmelita and shook her shoulder to wake her up. She woke and saw Sly was standing before her. She growled and moaned through the gag. Sly quickly untied the gag.
"GAHH! Will you be careful Sly!" Carmelita snapped.
"Well good to see you too." Sly said but Carmelita looked deathly concerned.
"Sly you need to get out of here it's a trap!" She cried.
"You don't think I knew that?" Sly asked. "Now hang tight I'm gonna get you out of this."
Sly proceeded to untie the foxy inspector, when suddenly she saw something, that made her eyes widen in horror. "WATCH OUT!"
It was too late something swatted Sly across the roof, if it wasn't for his cane catching onto the slate tiles he would've fallen off the roof. He managed to regain his footing.
Something clanged and landed on the roof. "HAHHAHA Predictable as ever!" Sly's eyes widened in horror he recognised that voice anywhere. "But then again thats what you expect for the pride of a Cooper!"
In the team van Bentley's eyes widened with horror he knew that voice all too well. "No.." He stuttered in disbelief. "..b..but he's dead?!"
On the roof facing Sly was Dr.M piloting a familiar looking spider mech he had during the Cooper Vault incident. "Well well how nice to see you again Sly. Whats the matter you look like you've seen a ghost?"
Sly looked in disbelief and horror. Carmelita looked petrified as she saw it was a criminal that she too thought was long since dead. "Dr. M? But but you're dead! Bentley told me you perished in the Cooper Vault when it collapsed?!" Sly questioned.
"Oh it did, but I'm not one to die so easily, our last battle left me crippled but alive!" Dr. M recounted. "The goal of my dreams in ruins because of you and your gang! You sought the glory for yourself leaving me with nothing just like your father!"
"Your still on that?!" Sly argued. "So what are you doing here M? And why side with dishonourable creeps like VILE?!"
"Oh thats a long story, but you won't live to see it so I might as well tell you.…" Dr.M explained.
Flashback: Sometime before the events of Sly 4:
Dr M was in a warehouse in Paris that he set up as his lab. "You see after the loss at the Cooper Vault, I spent my days plotting my revenge on you!…"
He was looking at his computer and some strange readings. Namely anomalies in space time. "Until one day I came across some unusual readings of space time energy. Which did explain the rather strange happenings going on in Paris of late…"
Later Dr. M was working on a what looked to be some kind of portal like device in his lab made out of what components he had left from the island. "..I was intrigued and so I built a trans dimensional gateway device and harvest this space time energy, my plan was to go back and warn my past self of your fathers betrayal…" Dr M activated the portal with a touch of a button and it activated but suddenly it began to overload and much to the monkey masterminds horror. It exploded.
The smoke cleared and he was no longer in the lab. "But what I found instead was more than I ever dreamed of…"
Later Dr. M was lying on the banks of a beach close to a dock. The monkey scientist was barely conscious and could only make out the face of a certain scientist who was part of something.
Later Dr M was on a lab table he regained consciousness and saw Dr Bellum was looking him over. "I wound up on an island which I later discovered was home to VILE academy, their was intrigued by my appearance…" Dr M then shared his story with who listened intently all but fascinated by his story.
Later he was standing before the VILE faculty themselves, he was explaining the story he told Bellum. Shadowsan looked unconvinced as did Cleo, but Gunnar was all but fascinated and had to admit he admired his intellect and thinking.
"I later shared this story and came to know the Faculty of this fine institution so. I proposed that I become a part of their organisation providing them with new technology and ideas to further their operatives potential."
The Faculty had soon come to a decision and voted on the matter of letting Dr. M join them, Dr Bellum said she could use an assistant to aid her science. Four hands raised and was unanimous.
"They accepted making me Dr Bellum's assistant and everyday I proved my worth and was recognised for my talent, not treated like a sidekick!"
Present day:
Sly took all this story in and Carmelita listened intently this all but told her this VILE was for real. "So you allied yourself with VILE." Sly realised.
"Indeed, I was especially intrigued by their little Black Sheep, but after seeing her grow I could see she reminded me all too much of you!" Dr.M snarled. "She always thought of herself than others! She has potential and could've been part of even greater things, but instead she leaves it all behind!"
"Probably because your buddies lied to Carmen about what they really were a bunch of dishonourable creeps that disrespect thieves and law enforcement!" Sly exclaimed. "And Carmens not like that she does care about others thats why she steals from you!"
"Enough! Dr.M exclaimed. "I certainly didn't expect you to be here as well, but this makes it all the more enjoyable for me! Because now we can settle the score!" He pressed a button on his lab coat.
In the team van the communication line to Bentley was cut. "Sly! Sly!" He tried but it was no good. "Player are you there you need to warn Carmen! Sly's in trouble!"
However he got no response, the communications had been blocked. Sly was on his own as was Carmen.
On the roof Dr.M smirked in anticipation for his revenge. "Now we will have no disturbances as I see the end of the Cooper line!" Dr.M lunged forwards and fired a laser blast from his helmet gear which Sly quickly dodged to the side.
Sly growled as he twirled his cane as he deflected incoming laser blasts and swung at Dr. M. He jumped out of the way of the cane and swatted Sly to the side across the roof.
Carmelita knew Sly wouldn't last long, she quickly tried to get free. She reached for her shock pistol which was in her left holster on her leg. She used her other leg to try and push the pistol free.
Meanwhile:
While Sly was duelling with Dr.M. Carmen had just entered the cellar where Devineaux was being held, compliments of the bait and switch her crew pulled.
"Player, I'm in." Carmen said on the coms.
"Just be careful Red, I've lost contact with Sly and Bentley. Do you think they're okay?" Player asked.
"Hmm, I'm sure Sly can handle it but just to be safe try and get in touch with them again." Carmen then suggested as she walked into the cella and found Devineaux cuffed to the chair and mumbling.
He looks up and faintly sees Carmen walking towards him. "So, you show your face! I knew you were behind this." He laughed despite his condition.
Carmen was able to deactivate the helmet and remove it from his head. "Shh. Easy, Devineaux. Save your need to get you out of here." She then used a taser from her coat to short out the handcuffs to release him.
The lady in red looks over Devineaux for any injuries. Then strangely he pulls out a pen and clicks on it, before he collapses to the ground. While the pen simply rolls to the ground and stands up straight. Then the hologram of Chief appears much to Carmens surprise.
"What is it now, Agent Devin…?" Chief said annoyed thinking her loose cannon of an agent was calling her for something stupid. However that was shot out the window when she saw Devineaux lying on the ground unconscious. Then turning round she saw a rather surprised lady in red, the very person she was hoping to meet.
"Carmen Sandiego, I presume?" Chief asked as she faced her.
Carmen was in shock she just smashed the pen with her foot cutting off the communication and Chief's hologram. She wondered what the heck that was all about.
Elsewhere:
Back at the Cathedral Dr.M keeps firing lasers at Sly who jumps and dodges out of the way from the blasts. The racoon thief quickly acts and fires his cane grappling hook at one of the spidermechs legs then with one quick motion pulls and yanks it off balance causing Dr.M to slip and fall on the slate roof. This gave Sly an opening and used his cane hook to slice off the left front leg.
Carmelita meanwhile had managed to shake her shock pistol free of its holster and tried to move her foot to tilt it up at the rope tying her to the wall. She used her left foot to aim the pistol then placed her right foot on the trigger.
"Oh is this gonna hurt." She grimaced. And with one flex of her foot pulled the trigger and fired a shock blast at herself causing her to scream in pain. Thankfully though the electro blast burned the ropes freeing her. She collapsed on her hands and took several deep breaths.
Sly had just kicked Dr.M away and saw Carmelita looked hurt. In concern he ran over to help her up. "Carmelita, you alright?" He asked.
Then suddenly a certain pen dropped out of her shirt pocket and landed on the top button which clicked and caused it to stand up straight. This caused Sly to look in surprise. There was more to come. The hologram of Chief then appeared.
"Agent Fox we have a…" She looked and saw Carmelita looked rather shaken up and she looked to see a certain ring-tailed thief standing next to her. "Sly Cooper, we meet at last." Chief greeted.
"Wha?..w..who are you?" Sly asked.
"You can call me…" Before Chief could finish that sentence the pen was again smashed by Dr.M's remaining spider legs.
"So what we suspected proves true you really aren't working alone, but with a top secret agency." Dr.M said. "Well sadly calling reinforcements won't do you much good. He lunged forwards and attacked.
Meanwhile Bentley had arrived on the scene in his wheel chair. He looked and saw Sly was fighting Dr.M and Carmelita was looking rather shocked from the blast she took to set herself free.
"I've got to do something! Murray won't answer and I can't call Carmen to warn her." Bentley then began to think. "Dr.M must be using a frequency jammer to block our communications I've got to try and disrupt it!"
Elsewhere:
Meanwhile fast asleep in her bed was Julia Argent, but all of a sudden a beep from her communicator pen sounded off. She reached for it while groggily waking up and tapped the button to answer it. The pen stood upwards and just as Julia grabbed her glasses the hologram of Chief appeared.
"Agent Argent, we have a man down and one in distress . Your partners." Chief said to her.
"What?!" Julia said in horror.
"I was able to triangulate Devineaux's and Fox's exact positions moments before I lost contact. I've called in the local gendarme." Chief said.
"I hope they get there in time."Julia said with worry for her two partners.
The Cathedral:
Sly meanwhile was having his own problems, Dr. M fired another blast but this time it only just grazed the raccoon thief in the side burning him. Sly quickly leaped up to the tower and held his side growling in pain. He looked and saw his fur and skin was burnin.
"Stings doesn't it dear boy! Just like your fathers sting of betrayal!" Dr.M exclaimed after firing another blast towards Sly which he dodged only for the blast to hit the tower and the shock wave sent him flying to the roof and dangled over the edge with his cane.
He tried to reel himself up again but couldn't because of the pain in his side. Dr.M cackled as he looked down upon his prey. "Heheheaahaha! The tables have turned now! At last the last of the greedy Cooper bloodline ends here!"
Dr.M lifts a metal claw ready to crush Sly when suddenly something strikes its monkey scientist looked and saw it was an arrow which suddenly exploded destroying the mechs right front leg.
Sly looked and saw Bentley had come to his rescue once again. "As always you get ahead of yourself Dr.M!" Bentley said defiantly.
Dr.M looked with a hateful glare at one he considered his equal. "Bentley! Why am I not surprised to see you here, always saving the life of one who is no less than you!"
"And I see your still blinded by your own pride!" Bentley exclaimed.
"You know it's not too late to join me Bentley. We're both considered second best in the eyes of the Coopers." Dr.M tried to pursued the genius turtle. "He stole your potential we could change the world! Even show the world the better thieves that we are!"
Bentley had heard these words before, from Penelope. "No Sly is my friend, and I would rather be his family than be part of some crooked dishonourable crime empire!" He fired his dart at Dr.M but he just dodged it.
"Oh its not me your angry at Bentley!" Dr.M smirked.
"Good because it wasn't you I was aiming at!" Bentley said as the arrow bounced off the wall, off the tower then hit Dr.M's lab coat button which deactivated the signal blocker.
"No!" Dr.M exclaimed. Sly used this moment to swing up and kick the monkey doctor to the left side of the roof over the edge. Bentley quickly activated his wheelchairs hover mode and hovered over to his chairs robotic arms he pulled his partner in crime back up.
"Thanks Bentley." Sly thanked.
"This isn't over yet!" Dr.M exclaimed as he stood upright despite his mech was badly damaged.
"It is Doc your mechs damaged and I doubt your up for a round three." Sly said to him.
"Oh Sly, Sly your so arrogant and you think you know everything." Dr.M exclaimed. "Well while you've been wasting your time here Brunt and Shadowsan have no doubt by now captured the elusive Carmen Sandiego, and returned her to VILE where she belongs!"
"Your lying!" Sly shouted.
"Sly he maybe right I haven't been able to contact Murray when I sent him back to help Zack and Ivy." Bentley pointed out, which made the raccoon thief wonder if the mad monkey was right.
"You might as well face it Sly I have won, and Carmen will be on the side of VILE soon enough!" Dr.M exclaimed.
"No she won't not now, not ever! So why don't you go back to VILE and tell your Faculty buddies that Carmen is never going back to them, no matter what they try!" Sly exclaimed as he pointed a defiant glare in his old foes direction. "Not while I'm around."
Dr.M revved up his spider mech ready to attack. "Oh we'll see about…." Suddenly he was hit with a large blast of electricity which shocked him so much he froze in place and toppled off the edge of the Cathedral.
Bentley and Sly looked to see it was Carmelita who had recovered from her own shock with her shock pistol in hand. She could see the surprised looks that Bentley and Sly had.
"What? He was done." Carmelita simply said.
The Cellar:
Carmen meanwhile was trying to pull Devineaux out of the cellar and get him to safety. She struggled trying to get him back on his feet.
"Grr come on, Devineaux. We need to get you out before it's…" Before Carmen could finish that sentence. "Too late." Said a familiar voice.
Carmen looks behind her and sees Coach Brunt, her old Mama Bear standing behind her. The brute closes the door and uses her strength to bend the sliding lock on the door. Trapping them inside.
Carmen just frowns at her old mentor. "Coach Brunt. Long way from campus, aren't you?" She asked. Coach Brunt began to approach her.
"You didn't expect to move away from home without a visit from mama bear, did you?" Brunt said clicking her neck and muscles. "And I'm not sure I approve of the tall, handsome, law-abiding company you're keeping these days."
"Rebound relationship. Needed a change after all the criminals and psychopaths." Carmen simply answered readying herself for anything.
Coach stood with crossed arms in front of the cellar window above her. "Now, you know I can't let you leave again, Lambkins." She said.
"Thats what I figured." Carmen fired her grappling hook which flew right past Brunts head. The lady in red grabbed Devinaux and tried to zip out through the window only for the brute of a coach to grab her by the leg pulling her back and swinging her to the floor. Chase was cast to the side as Carmen hit the ground smashing the chair as she crashed.
Players room:
"Red you okay in there?!" Player called in concern having heard the crash.
"Player, Player come in are you there!" Called Bentleys voice on the coms.
"Bentley finally I've been trying to call you for hours." Player said. "Listen I think Reds in trouble sounds like she needs help!"
The Cathedral:
Sly had heard that message from Bentleys tablet as he stood with Bentley and Carmelita. "They must've seen through our bait and switch!" Bentley realised.
"Right I'm on my way!" Sly said urgently but he looked at Carmelita. "Carmelita I…"
"I know." Carmelita answered. "Don't worry about me I'll be alright just go help your partner."
"But…" Before Sly could answer that Carmelita just gave him a peck on the cheek. "Go." She said to him.
Sly was speechless, for once Carmelita beat him to the then they heard the sounds of approaching police sirens. He nodded and leaped off the Cathedral roof and pulled out his glider as he glided across the city to help his partner.
"Please hurry." Player said in deep concern.
The cellar:
Carmen looked up to see Brunt was about to grab her, she rolled to the side then back flipped over the coach. Only for her to turn round and approach. Carmen through a roundhouse kick which Brunt blocked and then proceeded to ram Carmen hard into a cabinet as tools fell to the ground.
"Did you learn nothing in school?" Coach Brunt chucked as Carmen looked around for a weapon, when she noticed a wrench to her side. "Always protect the face, and never enter a room without an exit plan."
Carmen grabbed the wrench and swung it at Brunt who just dodged it, then she threw several more swings but they were dodged by the coach again and again. Brunt then swatted Carmen to the side which she blocked with her arms.
"Is that all you got? But then again your ring-tailed varmint of a boyfriend isn't here to help you now." Brunt then said.
Carmen just snarled at that as she swung the wrench at Brunt again. "Okay first of all, he's not my boyfriend." She swung the wrench only for Brunt to dodge and suddenly feel a sudden jab in her gut. "Second, he's taught me more than you did!"
Carmen used the taser to shock Coach Brunt who growled in pain as she tried to fight the everlasting shock. Much to the thief in reds horror the coach fights it and grabs Carmens hand shocking the taser out of her hand. Brunt swats the wrench out of Carmens hand only for it to fall into a sewer grate.
Brunt tried to grab Carmen only for her to slip under her and reach the door. She tried to pull on the metal that was twisted and bent to open the door but to no avail. Suddenly Coach Brunt grabbed her from behind and swung her to the side practically tearing her from her red coat scattering her equipment to the ground. Brunt proceeded to tear said red coat in half and closed in on Carmen.
Carmen was beaten and battered feeling pain in her side. But none the less she tried to fight back. Throwing a punch at Brunt only for her to catch it then swat her in the side sending her sliding into a wall. She breathed out. It seems that swat had bruised a rib or two.
Then she noticed the sewer grate. Right now that was her one chance of escape. She tried opening it only to find it was locked with a padlock. For once in her life she was actually starting to feel fears ice grip calling her name.
"I know how much you wanted to get out and see the world, pumpkin, but trust me, it's a world of hurt." Brunt said as she was closing in for the kill.
However before she could. Glass crashed and something hit the ground, it was a golden hook on a line. Carmen recognise that hook all to well. Then right on cue smashing through the window of the cellar was Sly Cooper who kicked Brunt over to the side as he entered.
He retracted his cane hook, and looks to see Carmen hurt. "Carmen!" He ran over to her to see she was bleeding from her mouth and had bruised a few ribs. "You okay?"
"Don't worry about me I…SLY BEHIND YOU!" She yelled suddenly Brunt grabbed him from behind and tossed him to the side and into the wall. He looked up to see the coach cracking her knuckles.
"Well well I should've known that monkey brained varmint couldn't finish the job!" Brunt said eagerly. "Oh how I've been waiting to have a crack at you Raccoon boy!"
"So, you must be this Mama Bear I've heard so much about, funny you don't look warm and fuzzy." Sly cracked.
Brunt just growled and tried to grab him only for Sly to slip under her and then swat her across the face with his cane. She looked with a seriously angered face and very deadly looking eyes. Sly just winched with a rather nervous smile.
Brunt swung a fist at Sly which he leaped to avoid and hit her on the back with his cane. She tried to hit him again only for Sly to duck and throw a roundhouse kick, then to quickly block another strike with his cane. Brunt however grabbed it and used it to pin him against the wall with an almighty crash.
Meanwhile:
Shadowsan was still in pursuit of one of the decoy Carmens. However he halted his pursuit the moment he heard the sound of police sirens and lights from below.
Somewhere close by was Ivy still in disguise who saw and heard the Police cars zoom by heading towards Carmens location. "Oh man oh man." She whispered.
The cars raced by and in the alley way Zack had regained consciousness. "Uh wha wha?" He said confused seeing the cars zoom by.
However his attention was more focused on the unconscious hippo enforcer on the ground beside him. "Murray!" He gasped as he went over to him deeply concerned.
Murray groaned as he regained his senses and started to stand up. Bruised but alive. "You okay big guy? You hurt?" Zack asked.
"Yeah just my pride, The Murray may be beaten but never defeated." Murray said trying to cover the fact he got his butt kicked.
Just then the team van pulled up with Bentley at the wheel. "Quick get in!" He called.
Players Room:
Player looked in deep concern for his friends as he saw from the maps on his computers the police were approaching the area.
"Come on, guys, you just need to buy yourself a little more time. Backup's on the way." He pleaded.
The Cellar:
Brunt grabbed Sly by the head and was ready to crush him. However Sly fought back by kicking her in the face with his feet. She then tossed Sly to the side and landed a punch straight in his gut which caused him to spit out some blood. He lost his hat as he was catapulted to the side.
Carmen looked in deep concern for her friend. She knew he was good but wouldn't be able to stand up to the punishment Brunt was giving him.
"Come on! I've seen bulldogs that hit harder than that!" Sly said. "Well one of them anyway."
Brunt just ignored that comment as she tried to hit Sly again he slipped under her and tried to swat at her with his cane. However she suddenly grabbed it and then kicked Sly away into the metal cabinet. She grabbed him by his arm and swung him into the floor, the opposite wall and finally back to the floor again where he slid right into the wall below the window.
"SLY!" Carmen cried and cringed in pain from trying to move.
Sly coughed up some blood when he tried to move, but his injury from his fight with Dr.M was flaring up. Coach Brunt stood over Sly with his cane in her hand.
"HA, this is supposed to be the great Sly Cooper that Dr. M's been crooning about." Out of nowhere she took both half of Sly's cane and much to his horror, snapped it in half.
To the raccoon thief that was heart breaking as the two halves of his cane were thrown to the floor. "Pathetic! You're all talk no flash."
Sly was breathing heavily in anger that was his fathers cane she'd just snapped in half. He yelled as he tried to throw a punch only for Brunt to punch him to the floor. She grabbed him by the shirt collar ready to finish him off with one punch.
"Brunt!" She looked to see Carmen. "Leave him alone!" Brunt simply dropped Sly to the ground as he coughed in pain. She then approached the beaten and battered thief in red. She was bruised her stealth suit torn and her ribs bruised.
"You rescued me from the side of a road, only to lure me here so you can pound me into dust?" Carmen breathed hard in pain.
"Hahaha. Believe you me, Lambkins, that is one stone you do not want to turn." Brunt chuckled as she knelt down to her level. "But I promise to let bygones be bygones if you be a good little sheep and come back to the island with the rest of the flock."
"Why!" Called a pained voice and they looked it was Sly. "So you can just turn her into a dishonourable second rate thug like the rest of your flock?" He groaned in pain.
"Now you might to watch your tone vermin especially if you have a collapsed lung or two!" Brunt said with a deadly tone. "And anyway, Black Sheep was raised on the island therefore she belongs to our family."
"Family?!" Sly groaned. "Ha! You call some lonely island full of villains and psychos family! You don't know the meaning of the word!"
"And what would you know about family!" Brunt questioned.
"I know enough to know that VILE doesn't make the cut, you trained Carmen to be a solider in your own games, lied to her about your true intentions, kept her from the real world what kind of family is that!" Sly said defiantly. "Family is about being there for each other no matter where we come from, not forcing them into something they would never choose to be in. If anything Shadowsan did Carmen a favour by failing her, at least then she could have the right to choose her own path!"
Carmen hung onto every word that Sly was saying to Brunt standing up to her. "And why should you care! Your a thief just like the rest of us and you don't even belong here freak!"
"Hey that freak knows more about being human than VILE ever will!" Carmen defied.
"Yeah and I am a thief, from a long line of thieves but the difference is I understand honour, and your just second rate thug turned psycho!" Sly defied. "Thats why I'm not letting you take Carmen back to that island, she deserves to make her own choice! And your right I'm not from this world but I know where I'm needed and right now its here with Carmen. Because…she's my family."
Carmen was practically holding back tears at that last part. Sly actually referred to her as part of his family. She gave a sincere smile at that before she turned to a defiant glare at Brunt.
"Yeah, he's my family now, so you better pound harder! Because I am never going back to VILE Island!" She said.
Brunt wasn't very happy with that answer so she was left with no choice. "After every little thing we've ever done for you." She said cupping Carmens chin. "Come here, little cub. Let mama bear give you one great, big last hug goodbye." Strangely she gave Carmen a hug, or rather forcing her into one.
However Brunts grip got tighter and tighter and Carmen could hardly breath and Sly could hear her bones starting to crack. He was helpless to do anything as he tried to summon what strength he had left to reach for his cane hook. As Carmen was about to suffocate however Brunt flinched. Standing behind her was Shadowsan who gave the coach a nerve pinch to the neck. Which caused her to collapse and release her grip on Carmen who backed up to the wall.
Sly honestly wasn't sure what to make of this. Carmen however knew Shadowsan was here to take her back to the island himself and not share credit.
"Okay..I didn't see that coming." Sly said in shock.
Carmen looked defiantly at the ninja master who gave her a failed grade back in crime school. "Still infighting, huh? Well, I wasn't going back with Coach and I'm definitely not going back with you." Carmen defied.
Shadowsan then stepped forward and unscathed his sword. Sly didn't like where this was going, nor did Carmen who reached for the wrench. "I did not come here to take you back." He said and out of nowhere he swung his blade at Carmen yelling who prepared herself for the end.
"NO!" Sly yelled.
"CARMEN?!" Player yelled from his computer. In the van the rest of the crew were deeply horrified by what they had just heard through Bentley's com. They thought they'd heard the worst.
The cellar was all but quiet, Brunt lay unconscious on the floor as did Devineaux. Sly lay on the ground petrified at what he'd just seen, but this wasn't a look of horror it was a look of surprise. For as Shadowsan placed his sword back in its sheath.
Carmen was still alive and well, the thing that Shadowsan slashed at was actually the padlock on the sewer grate. Carmen was shocked, confused and bewildered as was her raccoon accomplice. The very person who had a disliking towards Carmen since crime school and possibly cheated her out of a passing grade was now helping her?
"I... I don't understand." Carmen said startled.
Shadowsan then knelt down to the grate and opened it. "Follow me now. Both of you. No questions."
"What?" Sly and Carmen said in genuine surprise.
"That is a question." Shadowsan said as they heard the sounds of police sirens approaching the building.
Sly looked and saw Devineaux unconscious on the floor. "What about Devineaux?" Sly wondered as he got his cane pieces.
"The police will attend to him, and they will lock us up if we are still here when they do." Shadowsan then urged.
"I'll take my chances with them, thank you." Carmen wasn't buying this one little bit.
"Yeah we aren't going anywhere unless you tell us whats with the double cross, unless you want to spend it in a French prison?" Sly agreed rather untrustworthy.
"The police are the least of my concerns." Shadowsan said to the both of them. "Do you both really not realise that being trapped in a cell would far more easily allow VILE to reach us?"
"Us?" Sly and Carmen said in unison.
"Stubborn as always, Black Sheep. Can you not see that we are in this together now?" Shadowsan then said, but the way he said it made something ring in Sly.
He knew from Carmens story that it was assumed that Coach Brunt had found her at the side of the road in Argentina, but when Brunt said it was a stone she didn't want to unturn it made him wonder. Just then it hit him.
"You've…always been in this with Carmen from the start haven't you." Sly guessed to which Shadowsan just grunted. Carmen wondered what Sly meant by that, until finally it dawns on her.
"It was you. You were the one who found me." Carmen dropped the wrench as she came to the realisation.
"Okay now I'm full of questions." Sly groaned as he tried to stand up with the two pieces of his cane in hand. "But maybe we should talk after we're gone."
"Your Raccoon friend is more correct than he knows, you are both in no condition to leave on your own." Shadowsan then offered Carmen his hand. "Please."
Carmen was a little weary as was Sly but at this point what did they have to lose.
In that moment the police pulled up to the building after being alerted by the Chief of ACME. The officers ran into the building while from the shadows Julia watched with concern for her partner. Just arriving on the rooftops was Carmelita who looked down with great worry. Though she didn't know the lady in red all that well, she hoped that Sly had arrived in time and that he was okay.
In the cellar Brunt had come to her senses groaning as she got up to see Devineaux still unconscious. However more importantly neither Carmen or Sly were in the room, meaning they escaped. However she realised something else, the absence of her partner.
She looked and saw the opened grate. "Shadowsan?" She called but there was no answer. She looked and saw the Truth Extractor and went to collect it.
Soon after she ripped off the grate to make a bigger exit for her to fit through and leaped down to the then pulled out her phone.
Elsewhere:
Meanwhile Dr.M had just recovered from his fall and abandoned his spider mech or whatever was left of it. He then got a call from Coach Brunt on his ear piece.
"Brunt! Cooper got away do you have Black Sheep?" He answered.
"No she's gone. Is Shadowsan with you?" She asked on the com.
"No I thought he was with you?" Dr.M said rather confused.
In the sewer Brunt wondered why Shadowsan would just leave without saying a word, let alone why he wasn't with the good doctor. "I see. Well call the Cleaners to meet us at the rondevu point were gonna need pick up." She said walking through the tunnels making her escape.
A distance away on a rooftop under a dome with pillars Shadowsan and Sly who had some strength left carried Carmen over to the pillars for her to lean against it. Sly then sat next to her holding his side.
"Does it hurt when you breathe in?" Shadowsan asked out of concern.
"A little, but eh I've had worse." Sly said out of honesty.
However Carmen wanted to know the truth and now. "Argentina. Tell me everything, now." She demanded.
Shadowsan just looked away quietly. "There is nothing more to tell. As strange as it may seem, even someone like me is incapable of turning his back on an abandoned baby."
"Huh well you sure could've fooled me." Sly simply said rather surprised.
"If you were such a sensitive guy, why have you been such a jerk to me?" Carmen questioned given how much of a hard time she got from the master of stealth in the past.
In truth Sly was wondering the same thing. However he also remembered how that failing grade lead her to learn the truth about VILE. "Because he knew what would happen if you succeeded at crime school." he realised much to Carmens surprise. "Didn't you?" He looked to Shadowsan who just let out a sigh.
"Yes." He said before turning to Carmen. "Unlike the other members of our faculty, I did not wish for you to succeed in crime school... because I could not bear the thought of you being faced with having to choose a path of evil."
It was then that Carmen began to get the picture. "You knew I'd never accept, and you knew what they'd do to me when I said no." She said as she stood up with Sly helping her. "You failed me because you were trying to protect me."
"And…just for some clarity?" Sly then said in a hinting way knowing there was one thing Carmen defiantly needed to know.
Shadowsan knew what that was and sighed. "Yes, the coat was empty."
"I KNEW IT!" Carmen cheered despite cringing from the pain in her side.
"See its like I've been saying to you Carmen, your the finest pick pocket I've ever seen." Sly said to her. "The only way a skilled pick pocket could be fooled is if it was empty."
"Indeed." Shadowsan agreed as he stood up. "you were never anything less than the very finest pickpocket in your class. I sent Tigress to San Francisco knowing you would enjoy proving that to her all over again." He said with a smile.
Carmen did smile at that and Sly was glad she was proven right, but there was one thing that did spring to mind. "Okay but if you were on our side the whole time, why help us especially if Brunt and Dr.M were with you?" Sly asked.
"Doctor M?" Carmen picked up on that. "The former member of your fathers crew and the one who tried to rob your families vault? I thought you said he was dead?"
"So did I, turns out he survived and before my gangs little time caper he made a portal that brought him to this world. And to VILE." Sly said.
"Wow, I always wondered why was often talking to herself in her lab during my hold over year. Now I know." Carmen said.
"Indeed, Dr.M was accepted into VILE as assistant, I often questioned his motives and suspected him. Upon Coopers arrival however I had my suspicions and saw him as a threat." Shadowsan agreed. "However to answer your question, I feared that VILE would finally succeed in stopping you, so it once again seemed the right time to intervene."
"Again?" Carmen asked confused.
"Past tense?" Sly instantly guessed.
"I was not trying to harm you on the night of your escape from the island." Shadowsan explained remembering the night that Carmen escaped from the island with the hard drive in tow. "I was trying to join you."
"I guess I scare easy when I see a drawn sword." Carmen said.
"Yeah you could've just maybe I don't know diverted the Cleaners away?" Sly wondered. "Why the act?"
"I felt it was a necessary ruse." Shadowsan explained but there was more to come. "Though, did you not wonder why the Cleaners never pursued you in the helicopter?"
That was a good thought for when the Cleaners were about to pursue they discovered the motor lines had been cut. However what they didn't know was that it was Shadowsan who cut the lines with his own long sword.
"No way!" Carmen said in complete surprise.
"At this point nothing could surprise me." Sly said completely dumbfounded.
"A great burden was lifted from me the night of your escape, believing that you would begin a new life somewhere." Shadowsan said to them, mainly Carmen. "I never fathomed that you would dedicate your life to destroying VILE, which complicated things for me, to say the least."
"Well thats the thing, we choose our own paths." Sly then said. "And I guess me showing up and helping Carmen complicated things more huh?"
"Indeed, but at the very least, you made it more difficult for them to pin her down. And trained her in ways unfamiliar to them, protecting her in a way I couldn't without exposing myself." Shadowsan said to Sly.
Carmen was standing in mild surprise she had a large revelation dumped on her and now she was full of more questions without any answers. Not yet.
Meanwhile:
Back at the residence paramedics had just found Chase Devineaux and placed him on a gurney. They put him into an ambulance to take him to the nearest hospital.
In the alleyway, Julia and Chief watch from a distance. "Agent Devineaux is extremely disoriented. They won't know more until they run tests." Julia said in concern.
"The lug didn't deserve whatever Carmen Sandiego did to him." Chief said openly. Much to Julia's surprise.
"But... how can you be certain she was behind this?" Julia then asked.
"The keycard. It all adds up." Chief said turning her back on the scene. "Devineaux didn't lose it. Cooper picked his pocket and Carmen used it to bait him. Beyond that, I have to trust what I saw with my own two eyes. Carmen Sandiego was in that room with Devineaux tonight."
Julia looked very surprised, why would Carmen hurt her partner, does she have some kind of connection to VILE. Could she be one of them after all? She was caught up in her thoughts and emotions when all of a sudden.
"I wouldn't be too sure of that chief." The two looked and saw Carmelita arrive.
"Agent Fox, are you okay, you look like you took a nasty shock." Julia said in concern.
"The price to pay for burning off ropes with your own shock pistol." Carmelita brushed off.
"When Cooper baited you out too?" Chief assumed much to Julia's surprise still.
"No not Cooper but someone else. I don't know about Sandiego but I do know for sure who's linked to VILE." Carmelita said which all but peaked Chiefs interest.
"You can confirm for sure you saw an associate of VILE tonight? Then who?" Chief asked.
"Someone both Cooper and I thought was long since dead." Carmelita said and it seemed Chief was in for a long and complicated story.
Players Room:
"You went back to Poitiers to rescue two detectives found out a mad scientist from Sly's world is still alive and left with an evil VILE mastermind?" Player said listing all that happened. "The worst one, too! What makes you think you can trust him? And what exactly was he doing in Argentina 20 years ago anyway?"
Team Van:
"Player does have a point,we may not know of Carmens history but if he was in Argentina it had to have been for a reason." Bentley agreed.
"Yeah but what if he's really on our side? I mean this maybe the bruises talking but think about Panda King he was our enemy but then he turned to the side of good, when we saved her daughter." Murray said.
"That actually makes sense." Bentley agreed.
The rooftops:
"You all make good arguments." Carmen said. "Everything your saying is exactly what I want to know. There's more to the story. There has to be."
"If there is we'll find out." Sly said to her. "So far VILE's been telling you nothing but lies about your past. I know there's a lot about my father I don't know about if Dr.M is anything to go by. All I know is if there was more to the past I'd find it."
"Right so my only chance of finding out will be to keep Shadowsan..." However when they turned to see him, they discovered. He was gone, and any chance of Carmen learning about her past with him.
"Close." She said disappointed.
"Wow, he knows how to make an exit when he needs to." Sly said rather impressed.
"Let me guess, ninja disappearing act?" Bentley asked.
"Something like that." Carmen said a little disappointed.
"I'm sorry Red." Player said I'm consoulement.
Sly did feel sorry for his friend, her only clue to her past disappeared into the night. However when he looked at where Shadowsan was standing he saw something good that came out of it.
"Oh I wouldn't say it's all bad news." He said getting up. Carmen wondered why he said that so she followed him.
"Looks like our ninja friend left something for us." Sly said smiling as he walked to the edge.
"What?" Player and Bentley asked in unison. The answer was at his feet was a VILE Hard drive within was fresh data and intel. He picked it up and showed it to Carmen.
"A present." Carmen said cheered up a little.
"Well you were itching for a new caper Red." Sly said offering her the hard drive. "So let's see what lies on the path that's laid out for us, and if there are answers about your past we'll find them. No matter what."
Carmen smiled as she admired his determination. "Sly, what you said about me being your family. Did you mean it?"
Sly just smiled. "Every word, it's like I said before Carmen we're the same, we were orphans, we decided our own paths. To me that makes us family and we're in this together no matter what VILE has to throw at us."
The lady in red couldn't help but shed a tear from her eye. To know that Sly thought of her that way. In a way she thought of him in the same way.
"Well, your like family to me too." Carmen said happily to which Sly smiled warmly back in response. She then took the hard drive from Sly and smiled confidently.
"So let's see what lies ahead." Carmen said, before calling Player. "Player tell Bentley and the others to meet us at rendezvous. I have a feeling we're gonna have new capers to plot."
The two thieves stood side by side as they looked out to the rising sun from the tower view. It was clear that the road ahead may have a lot of secrets and mysteries to unveil but what ever comes their way they'll face it together.
Sly's POV:
"So this rescue mission may have ended in a close call and a surprising revelation. But if there's one thing I've learned is that no matter what trials come our way whether it's learning an old enemy is back from the dead, or finding out the biggest jerk from Carmens past life was actually protecting her this whole time. We face it together. Finding answers about Carmens past before VILE won't be easy, but then again nothing ever is. And something tells me from this point forward things for me and Sandiego are gonna get a whole lot more interesting."
Authors notes: And...scene. So Carmen and Sly managed to survive their encounter with Brunt and Dr.M barely, thanks to the help of an unexpected ally, Shadowsan of all people who would've thought. Now as many of you will have guessed the reason why I brought Murray and Bentley in after the events of the Magna Carta caper was to aid the fight between Murray and Coach Brunt I thought it be a good scene to have The Murray take on Mama bear.
Originally I was going to have Sly help Carmen rescue Devinaux and get taken away by Dr.M however I thought a double rescue mission would make things more interesting. Especially having Carmelita call Chase out on his incompetence.
Now the two thieves are left with so many questions, what does Shadowsan know of Carmens past, what's the real story behind her coming to VILE island? And what does Dr.M have in mind for them now he's made his presence known? Well at least now the Cooper & Sandiego gang now have a fresh Hard Drive with fresh new capers to plot.
