Kitten-Locked9/27/06

I could feel Daine stretching at my back before I heard her produce a low, contented sigh. Digging my claws into the mattress a bit more than the people would like, I lifted myself up, stretching out through my front paws as I felt my back extend and settle. I rose to my full height, disappointingly lacking for a creature of my form. Ah well, I knew I would soon surpass my friends, even my adoptive mother, in height. What I saw as due time would be a lifetime for Daine.

Jumping off the bed, I was careful to balance myself on the wooden floor. I knew my mother was a considerably light sleeper, and that her stretching usually signified that she would soon awake. Quietly, yet with confidence, I stalked across the room, stopping in front of the locked door. My mother's future was beyond that door, if only they would both to recognize what they truly meant to each other. I certainly was not about to tell them, even if I had been capable of forming the words. That was something they would have to figure out on their own.

Rising to my haunches, I gazed at the lock. The door was not very old, nor brand new. The lock was of a common variety, nothing I had not seen at home. Dropping onto all fours once more, I approached the mechanism with an eye for detail, taking in the connections and each curve of the metal. I lifted a paw, pressing my index-claw into the groove that was created for a key. I experimented with the dexterity of it, pushing, prodding and scratching. Removing my claw, I paused, listening as Daine stirred behind me.

"Leave it be, Kit."

The order was gentled with sleep, letting me know that Daine thought I could alter the position the lock was in no more than she could bend a spoon without the benefit of touch. Inwardly smiling, I reached up, pulling myself onto my haunches. My head and neck rose until my eyes were level with the lock. Blinking, I cocked my head to the left, securing my dominance over the device. Opening my mouth, I released a trill, a suggestion of action. I held the note for a mere moment before the lock complied, permitting the door to swing into the other room. Satisfied and not at all surprised, I stepped into the room beyond, scanning the area that had opened to me.

"Did I know she could do that?" Numair's voice told of his disconcertion as he questioned Daine. In response I curled my long tail, hoping he would see how pleased I was.

Daine's reply sounded rather astonished, causing me to bare my teeth with contentment. "No more did I."

Now they would talk. Perhaps they may even realize their destiny. My goal for the day was complete.
