The garage door opened while the SUV and the convertible entered the garage and came to a stop. The doors opened as Murphy, Connor, Romeo, Angelina, Angelica and Angelique got out of the convertible and the SUV and they closed the doors. Angelica used the remote to close the garage door while Connor, Murphy and Angelique headed out of the garage and Angelica looked at Romeo.
"Let's go," Angelica said. They walked out of the garage as she closed the door and they headed for the house. She watched Connor, Murphy and Angelique go in the house as she frowned and she walked faster.
In the house, Angelique headed for the study while Murphy opened the refrigerator and he removed two bottles of beer. He tossed one of the bottles to Connor as Connor caught the bottle then Connor left the room. He walked down the hallway when he entered the study and he saw Angelique sitting at the desk.
"Go ahead," Angelique said, not looking at him.
"Go ahead an' do what?" Connor said, walking to the desk.
"Go ahead and blame this on me."
"Why would I do that?"
"I was the one who parked the SUV too close to the warehouse."
"You're right. You did."
"I was the one who stepped on that twig and alerted the guards we were there."
"So?"
"So?!"
"They gave up lookin' fer us after a few second," Connor said then he held his hands up when she was about to say something. "I know. We could've been killed. That this isn't a game. But you can't…"
Something moved in his head as he realized he wasn't just talking about Angelique as much as he was talking about himself and Connor sighed.
"I can't what?" Angelique asked while she got up and she walked around the desk to stand in front of him.
"You can't take all th'blame."
"Like you do?"
"You noticed that, hunh?"
"Not that hard to miss."
"Shit," he said with a small grin and he rubbed the back of his head with his left hand.
"It was my fault that other guy got away."
"How did that happen?"
"They were shooting at us."
"Then it's not yer fault."
"It is."
"Why are you so down on yerself?"
"I'm not."
"You are," he said, arching his eyebrows up.
"Guess that's what happens when your parents expect perfection."
"Most parents do."
"Did your father…?"
Connor noticed the shame in her eyes at the mention of his father and he carefully placed his hands on her shoulders.
"It's ok. You can ask me questions about Da," he said and she saw the truth in his eyes.
"Thanks," she said then paused and she lightly shook her head. "You see, for me and my brothers, we had to be perfect. In everything. If not, we were a disgrace to the family."
"Like with yer trainin'?"
"Yes. That's why I hate it when someone watches me. My father would criticize and complain. Make me do moves over and over until I wanted to drop from exhaustion. Nothing was good for him."
"Wanna know the reason why he did that?" he asked and she nodded. "I think it has t'do with th'life debt he owed my da. T'him, he was weak an' had t'rely on someone else t'do summat he should have been able t'do."
"That would explain why he… Why he gave up."
Connor saw the tears in her eyes as he moved her closer and he held her against him.
"Are you talkin' about when he ended up bein' paralyzed?" he asked and she nodded, placing her forehead against his chest. She slid her arms around him as she let the tears fall and he gently rocked her. She calmed down after a few minutes and he moved back, holding gently onto her shoulders. He reached in the pocket of his jeans as he removed a clean handkerchief and he handed the handkerchief to her. She used the handkerchief to wipe her eyes and nose and he softly smiled. "Feel better?"
"Yeah," she said with a sigh. "Shit. He would have been furious if he saw me crying like this."
Nodding, he lightly squeezed her shoulders and she walked around the desk. She looked at the screen after sitting down and he went to see what she was looking at.
"Everything ok in here?" Angelica asked and they looked at her standing in the doorway.
"We're fine," Connor said, glancing at Angelique.
"Well, Romeo wanted me to tell you dinner's ready."
"Let me turn off the computer," Angelique said while she typed on the keyboard, turned off the computer and Connor stood back so she could stand up. He followed her out of the room as they headed down the hallway and Angelica noticed Angelique lightly brushing her fingers against Connor's fingers.
Safe Haven
Eunice sat at her desk as she looked at the screen and she frowned. She was trying to figure out where Connor, Murphy, Romeo, Angelica, Angelina and Angelique were and she sighed, sitting back in the chair.
"Where are you?" she whispered.
A knock on the door made her look up when the door opened and one of the security people walked in the room. The woman had long black hair with bright blue tips, gray eyes and she has a small gold loop hanging from her left nostril. She was wearing jeans, a white blouse, white sneakers on her feet and her eyeglasses perched on top of her head.
"Hey," Tanya Bryce said with a small smile.
"Hey."
"Thought you wanted to see this."
Tanya walked to the desk when she placed the file folders on the desk.
"Angelique told us to burn all of the hard files, but these looked important."
"Thanks," Eunice said. She watched Tanya leaving the office as Tanya closed the door and Eunice opened the file folders. She knew Angelique had downloaded everything, but she had been curious to just how much information Angelique had on them. Eunice started reading the information in the first file folder when her eyes widened and she curled her fingers in and out. "Son of a bitch."
She looked at the security cameras when she flipped off the cameras and she closed the file folder, stood, picked the file folders off the desk, walked to the door, opened the door and she left the room.
Eunice walked down the hallway when she saw Sibeal walking toward her and he smiled.
"Hullo," he said. He was shocked by the cold look she gave her as she stormed by him and he frowned.
A short time later, she walked outside as she headed for the gangplank and she walked down the gangplank. She was surprised no one stopped her from taking the file folders with her as she shrugged her shoulders and she headed down the dock.
Milan
Eunice walked down the street as she held the file folders against her chest and she scanned the area with her eyes. She had used a secure line to call a contact she knew was in Milan and she was told where to meet them.
"Hey," made her stop when she walked back to the doorway to a restaurant and she smiled.
"Sorry. Guess I wasn't paying attention," Eunice said, walking inside.
"No problem. I got us a table."
She followed her contact to the table at the back of the room and she slid into the booth. Her contact sat across from her as she placed the file folders on the table and she leaned back in the seat.
"What's in here?"
"Open it and see," she said with a small smile.
Eunice watched her contact slide the file folders closer, open the file folders, read the information and she saw her contact's eyes widened a few times.
"Is this shit for real?"
"Yeah, it is," Eunice said with a nod.
"Damn."
"So, is this enough to make a deal?"
"Are we talking about the Saints?"
"Yeah. You make it so the Saints and their friend are cleared of all charges, all warrants for their arrests go away and they are allowed to either keep doing what they're doing or go back to their old lives and it's all yours."
"That's a tall order."
"Well, if you can't do it," she said as she started sliding the file folders to her and her informant placed their hand on the file folders.
"No, I can do it. Just going to need some time."
"There isn't time. They've targeted Giovani Yakavetta and Interpol is involved. Imagine the carnage if they run into each other."
She watched her informant have an internal conversation when they sighed and sat back in the seat.
"Fine."
She stood up as they shook hands and she slid the file folders to her informant. She headed for the door when she looked back, but her informant was gone and she went outside. She looked around to make sure she wasn't being followed when she placed a pair of sunglasses on and she headed down the sidewalk.
Yakavetta Estate
Giovani walked down the hallway while his footsteps echoed behind him and the guards opened the doors. He walked in the room when he noticed the carpeting had been cleaned and Lorenzo was standing in front of the fireplace.
"Is she dead?" Giovani asked, but Lorenzo didn't look at him.
"Yes," Lorenzo said after a few seconds.
"You do know that will cause a problem. Nearly the entire staff only answer to her."
"Then it is time for you to man up and show them who really is in charge."
"How!? By killing someone in front of them as an example?"
"That is what your father… Your uncle… Your grandfather… That is how they would have done it."
"But I am not my father, my uncle nor my grandfather. Mother knew that. That is why she was in charge."
Lorenzo glanced at him when he sighed and lightly shook his head.
"And that was her mistake."
"Mother was right. You're a psychopath."
"Of course, I am."
Giovani walked closer as he stood next to Lorenzo and they looked up at the portrait of "Papa Joe".
"I remember Mother showing me the security footage of his trail." Giovani said.
"I have seen that footage as well. Did you listen to their speech?"
"Yes, I did. What they said wasn't so much of a threat as it was a warning."
"A warning we should both take to heart."
"You're afraid of them?"
"I am not so much afraid of them as I am their leader."
"Are you talking about Il Duce?"
"Yes."
"Have you ever met him?"
"No. But your father did tell me that if you ever did meet him, you are already dead."
They became silent when Giovani frowned and he shook his head.
"I heard he was dead," Giovani said.
"A lot of people have thought that, but they end up being wrong. Men like him don't die."
"Why do you think he was with the Saints?"
"From the information I was able to gather, they are his sons."
"His sons?!"
"Yes."
"Christ."
"Now that you know who we are up against, I suggest you get more men."
Giovani watched Lorenzo walking away when he felt a cold chill move through him and he sighed.
"We're dead men," Giovani whispered, looking at the portrait.
Safe Haven
Smecker sat at his desk when the door opened and Sibeal entered the room.
"What do you want?" Paul asked.
"Have you seen Agent Bloom?" Sibeal asked.
"Don't tell me she deserted, too."
"I don't think she deserted as much as she's missin'."
"Who's missing?" Eunice said, walking in the office.
"You," Paul said.
"No, I'm right here."
"You stormed passed me not jus' a half an hour ago with a look of pure anger on yer face," Sibeal said.
"Yeah, I did."
"Where did you go?" Paul asked.
"I went for a walk to cool off. Is that an offense now?" she asked, crossing her arms over her chest.
"No. But with everything that's happened, I think it would be best for us to stay onboard the ship."
"We wouldn't have to if you hadn't killed off our chief of security, our captain and our head of medical."
Smecker glared at her, but she was intimidated and she arched an eyebrow.
"Any luck in finding the Saints?" she asked after a few seconds.
"No," Paul said.
"Well, you better find them before Interpol does. Imagine the carnage if they met while trying to take out Yakavetta."
They watch her leaving the room then Smecker let out a breath of air and Sibeal walked to the portal. Sibeal looked out at the view while he placed his hands behind his back and he frowned.
Eunice walked down the hallway when the soft pinging sound of her cellphone made her stop and she made sure she wasn't in sight of any of the security cameras before she removed the cellphone from her pocket. She looked at the screen when she pushed the button and she smiled.
Deal done.
Thanks.
A pleasure doing business with you.
She placed the cellphone back in her pocket as she went down the hallway and she started whistling her favorite song.
The Traynor Estate
The sliding door opened while Angelica walked outside and she saw Connor sitting near the edge of the pool. He had his legs bent up and his wrists were on his knees. He was watching the sunset and she noticed how tense his back and shoulders looked.
"Do you want to talk about it?" she asked, closing the sliding door then she walked to him. She sat down next to him while Connor looked straight ahead and she bent her knees up. She could sense he wanted to say something, but she didn't want to push him.
"I guess I'm just tired," he said as he leaned back to rest on his elbows.
"I would be surprised if you weren't," she said and he glanced at her. "What you have to remember is you're not alone in all this."
"I know, but it still doesn't make things easier."
"You also feel betrayed and you don't know who to trust," she said then she held her right hand up. "Yes, I know you trust Murphy, your uncle and your mother. And I'm sure you trust Romeo. But too many people have broken their word or shown you they can't be trusted."
"I was gonna say that," he said with a small grin. They sat in silence when he sat up, rubbed his face with his hands then he sighed. "I guess th'thing that's pissin' me off is I don't know what t'do next."
"We're going to go after Yakavetta."
"Should we do that now or, like with those other assholes, wait a few weeks?"
"Either way, he is going to get more security and taking him on will be tricky."
"Which is why we need t'really plan this out. If we had done that when…"
She was good at knowing when Murphy was shutting down, so seeing Connor doing the same made her move a little closer and he didn't seem to mind when she slid her right arm around his shoulders.
"I'm sure your father knew what he was doing when you went after the Roman," she said and he nodded his head.
"He wanted t'go out on his own terms."
She knew what he was talking about as she nodded and she lightly patted his right shoulder.
"I happened to see the autopsy report they did on him after all of you were taken into custody. He had cancer."
"Aye, he did."
"I am sure he was grateful that you were there at the end."
"Jus' wonder if he found peace when he confronted the Roman."
"I'm sure he did."
"Doesn't help with th'fact that he's not here."
"Because you need his advice."
"That's not a question."
"Wasn't supposed to be."
Sighing, Connor rose to his feet when he headed for the sliding door and he opened the sliding door. He nodded to Murphy as Murphy walked by him and Murphy turned to look at his twin.
"He's missing your father," Angelica said while she walked to him and Murphy turned to look at her.
"I miss him, too," Murphy said.
"Only difference is you were sort of able to speak with him."
"You mean my dream?" he asked and she nodded her head then she gave him a puzzled look.
"Did you need me for something?"
"We're done with t' dishes an' I was wonderin' if you wanted t'go watch a movie."
"Sure," she said. He took her right hand in his left hand as he opened the sliding door and they went inside.
Upstairs, Connor opened the door as he walked in the bedroom and he headed for the bed. He flopped down onto his back as he slid his hands behind his head and he looked up at the ceiling.
He normally didn't allow much of what he was feeling to overwhelm him, but he felt like he was falling apart. Connor closed his eyes as he breathed deeply until his body relaxed and his mind drifted off.
"Help me," Connor thought when a sense of peace moved over him and he felt the bed dipping. He opened his eyes after smelling the strong smell of cigar smoke and whisky and his eyes moved to the left.
"Shit," he whispered after seeing Noah sitting next to him and Noah snorted a laugh.
"Is that anyway t'say hullo?" Noah asked and Connor sat up.
"Sorry," Connor said a few times as his mind tried to comprehend what he was seeing and he wondered if he was dreaming.
"No need t'be sorry."
"Aye, there is."
"If you're gonna say you failed me, then you best keep yer mouth shut. Neither you nor yer brudder have failed me or Him."
"Doesn't change how I feel."
"What you feel is lost."
"Not so much lost as I feel like I'm runnin' in fuckin' circles," Connor said as he stood up and Noah watched him pace. "When we first started all this, it was jus' me, Murphy an' Rocco. We thought that's all we needed. That we could do whatever th'hell we wanted because we had all th'answers. We didn't. We fucked up. We got our asses handed t'us and Rocco ended up dyin'! An' who took all th'blame? Me! An' it didn't help that Smecker got involved. He used us. He controlled us."
"You're right. He did.."
"Why did that happen?"
"I believed it happened so we could finally be reunited."
"What about th'rest of it? He's takin' over."
"You proved he isn't by walkin' away."
Connor nodded as he kept pacing and Noah titled his head to one side.
"Tell me this," Noah said and Connor looked at him. "What do you want?"
"I wanna break. That's what I want," Connor said, tossing his hands in the air.
"Then step back an' take one. If I had done that…."
"You would still be here," he said, lowering his head. "I know Murph an' I keep harpin' on it, but we can't get passed it."
"Which is fine."
"No, it's fuckin' not."
Noah walked to him as he placed his hands on Connor's shoulders then he pulled Connor into a hug.
"Uh… How can you be huggin' me?" Connor whispered.
"Don't think about it," Noah whispered. Nodding, Connor held onto his father when he felt the tears in his eyes and he cried. He felt Noah rocking him as Connor breathed in the smell of whisky and cigar smoke and he held on tighter.
"Did you…? Did you ever find out why th'Roman betrayed you?"
"I did."
"An' you made peace with it?"
"Aye."
Connor moved back as he wiped his eyes with the back of his left hand then he sighed.
"Now, I am gonna tell you what I told Murphy. Th'two of you are th'baddest assholes out there. Don't ever ferget that," Noah said, locking eyes with his son.
"I won't," Connor whispered when he felt his body relaxing and darkness moved over him. He opened his eyes when he made a staggered sigh and he slowly sat up. He placed his head in his hands when he heard the soft sound of someone knocking on the door and he got off the bed. He walked to the door when he opened the door and Angelique noticed he had been crying. "What do you want?"
"Just checking up on you," she said and he stood back so she could go in the room. He closed the door then he leaned against the door and she crossed her arms under her breasts. "Are you ok?"
"No, I'm not ok."
"Want to talk about it?"
Connor was about to tell her he didn't, but something caused him to kick off the door and he walked to her.
"I don't wanna be in charge anymore."
"You don't?"
"No."
She looked at him for a few seconds when she slid her hands up his arms and they locked eyes.
"Don't get me wrong," he said with a tiny grin. "I'm not givin' up. I just need a break."
"Nothing wrong with doing that."
"We are a pair, ain't we?"
"Yep," she said, moving her hands away. "Want to spar?"
"Nope. I just wanna go t'bed."
"Don't read anything into it, but how about I hold you until you fall asleep?"
"I wouldn't say no," he said with a small smile and she was starting to like seeing him smile.
Two hours later, Connor was resting on his right side and Angelique on her back. His head rested on her lower chest while she held him and she was carding his hair. Feeling like she was being watched, she looked to her left and Murphy was standing in the doorway.
"Don't mind me," Murphy said as he gave her a pleased look before walking in the room then he went into the bathroom. Smiling, Angelique watched Connor sleeping as Connor made a content sigh and she went back to carding his hair.
