Carlisle was finishing up pretending to eat his salad. Usually he wouldn't bother to put on such a show, however, today, the staff room seemed extra full and someone would have noticed if he didn't sit there with food in front of him.

His phone rang. He knew it was his son before he looked at the name of the caller, Edward had been calling much more than usual. Ever since him and Bella were reunited after what happened in Italy, Edward was much more protecting of his girlfriend. Calling Carlisle for every little thing. "Bella had another nightmare again, she was screaming this time" or even amusingly "Bella just cut her finger on a piece of paper, and I know she is not good with blood…"

Just as he had suspected, the caller was Edward.

"Edward," Carlisle said calmly.

"Carlisle", there was a slight panic to Edwards voice. "I dropped Bella off at Jacobs house and they were meant to meet me at the treaty line about 20 minutes ago and they are nowhere to be seen. I am worried."

"Son, calm. You know they will just be running late."

Edwards next words came out in the sound of a snarl. "Jacob does not respect boundaries".

Carlisle smiled slightly, Edwards intense facade must be tiering Bella out. He musings were disrupted by a voice over the intercom.

Paging Dr. Cullen, paging Dr. Cullen to the Emergency room

He sighed.

"I have to go son", Carlisle said, placing his uneaten salad in the bin and grabbing his stethoscope and clipboard. His break was over.

He briskly walked from the break room to the emergency room, mentally preparing himself for whatever trauma was awaiting him.

He was met with the flashing lights from ambulances outside the emergency room, lighting the place up red and blue. A nurse passing by mentioned they were receiving patients from a car crash that had just happened.

Carlisle could immediately tell he was in for a serious case there were two patients being rolled in on gurneys from the ambulances. The first was audibly a male from the groans that were being made and was covered in blood. The second patient was covered in chords and connected to on O2 supply and had heart monitors. Carlisle closed his eyes for a split second, taking a moment to pause and think and then rushed into the moment. No amount of mental preparation could have him ready for the scene that met his eyes.

It did not click at first when he realised the male patient was Jacob, however as he replayed his recent conversation with his son, he knew the second patient must be Bella.

In shock, Carlisle sprinted down the hallway towards the second gurney with his family member and sons critically ill stethoscope fell to the ground behind him. His perfect marble face was creased with worry and his skin was much paler than usual.

Bella was covered in blood and unconscious, there was a large laceration to her head and one of the paramedics was applying pressure to her head wound to stop her from bleeding out.

As Bella's gurney was wheeled into the first trauma bed himself and the paramedics got ready to transfer her onto the emergency room bed.

"1,2,3…go" yelled one of the paramedics and all three of them seamlessly transferred Bella from the gurney to the bed.

The act of moving her seemed to have woken her up from her unconscious state, she began groaning, eyes were wide in shock, scanning the room trying to determine what had happened and where she was. It was something that Carlisle had grown used to seeing after working as an emergency room doctor.

Carlisle watched as Bella's brown eyes found his and locked onto him. Riddled with worry he shook his head. He knew he could not let his feelings get in the way of treating Bella, no matter how frozen with worry he was.

Bella began groaning she was seemingly dazed, her face was chalk white and she fought against the oxygen mask placed over her face. The sound of her heartbeat on the monitors was going crazy. Carlisle reached for her hands, pulling them away from taking the oxygen mask off.

"Shh Bella, everything is going to be alright. Just calm down, it's Carlisle. I need you to stay still," he said wiping her sweat plastered hair away from her forehead.

Bella tried harder, fighting against Carlisle's strong grip. Her face slowly changed from chalk white to a slight tinge of green. He knew exactly what was happening. He loosened his grip on Bella's arm, assisting her to pull off the oxygen mask.

Carlisle's strong arms rolled Bella onto her side towards him trying not to have her get tangled in the mess of chords she was connected to, cradling her body. He opened the top draw of a desk beside the bed he pulled a plastic sick bag out and went to place it underneath her mouth. Bella lurched forward, her body riddled with heaves as she was sick. Missing part of the bag Carlisle was holding his light blue silk collared shirt, white doctors coat and hand that was holding the bag was covered in Bella's vomit. He moved the bag slightly so it was fully covering Bella's mouth and using his unsoiled hand, rubbed circles around Bella's back until she was done.

Carlisle grimaced sympathetically, not because he was covered in vomit, that he did not mind at all since it was Bella he was helping. He was just so upset to see his family member so sick and helpless.

Continuing to hold the bag, he scanned Bella's body for injuries. She was profusely bleeding from the head; possible concussion from this, from the way she was breathing there were some cracked ribs and her foot was turning purple, possible broken bone. He looked up at the other doctors in the room shouting tasks for them to do with his main priority being addressing the head trauma.

"We need to get her nausea under control," Carlisle said to his crew eyeing off the amount that Bella had been sick into the bag. He didn't like what he was seeing and it seemed like Bella couldn't stop. He watched as blood pooled on the side of the bed from the cut in Bella's head that he currently could not attend to while Bella was being sick.

One of the nurses appeared with a syringe filled with medication to help with the pain and nausea, this had to be applied with an IV.

"Bella, I know it is hard but you are going to have to hold your hand still while we place an IV into you. I promise it will stop you being sick and help with the pain a little." he said.

For the second time, Bella's scared eyes met Carlisles. He could see they were filled with pain and fear. He returned her gaze with an unconvincing smile, he was too concerned to be genuine with his response.

No sooner had the IV been placed into Bella's hand she whimpered in pain, emptying more of her stomach into the bag Carlisle was holding. After injecting the medication into the IV, the nurse moved her attention to Carlisle, grabbing a sanitising wipe and trying her best to get the vomit off of Carlisle's shirt and coat.

"You need to go change Dr. Cullen," she said.

"I will be fine." he almost accusingly said.

It seemed the medication had worked as Bella finally finished throwing up into the bag and allowed Carlisle to lower her body back onto the bed, placing the oxygen mask back over her mouth. Carlisle pulled back the sick bag and disposed of it appropriately, washing the vomit off his hands in the nearby basin and removing his soiled doctors coat, placing it on a nearby chair. His shirt was still wet with sick. He pulled another bag out of the draw and placed it on Bella's stomach, emjust incase, /emhe thought. He moved onto the more pressing issue, Bella's bleeding head.

Taking a look at the wound, he realised it was very deep and wide with what looked like a little piece of metal sticking out and Bella had already bled through 3 gauzes that had been placed on the site. His vampire senses heightened, he was worried about the amount of blood Bella was losing. He crouched down so he was eye height with the wound and inspected it closely, placing the back of his hand on Bella's head he realised that she was very warm and moaned as she nestled into his cool touch. Carlisle smiled to himself, empros of being a vampire/em. He lightly touched his hand around the site knowing that it would bring immeasurable pleasure to Bella, and he would do anything to being some form of relief, even for a moment.

"Bella?" Carlisle said stroking more sweat away from her forehead.

"Yeah", Bella moaned small shivers travelling up her body. Carlisle noticed this and acknowledged she had a fever setting in.

"I am going to need to have a look at your ribs", Carlisle said sympathetically.

Bella nodded in agreement. Carlisle turned to take some cloth cutting scissors to remove Bella's shirt and as soon as he had turned back noticed that Bella had wrenched the oxygen mask back off her face and was leaning over the side of the bed the sick bag he had placed on her stomach fell to the ground and she wretched covering her mouth with her hand, sick dripping from her fingers.

"Bella!", he said in shock. Grabbing the bag from the ground, thrusting it back over Bella's mouth while she continued to be sick. He made eye contact with one of the nurses and gave them a meaningful look. She knew exactly what to do and placed another dose of medication into the IV.

This time Bella was done a lot quicker than last time which counted for something. Carlisle helped her to lie back down, placing the oxygen mask over her face again.

"Are you alright?" Carlisle asked, hoping that the second dose of medication would help.

Bella breathed in sharply, "Ouch", she grumbled. Carlisle knew he had to work out what was happening with her ribs. He took the scissors he reached for earlier and began to cut Bella's shirt off, exposing her chest and stomach area. Carlisle thought to himself that if Bella was fully coherent she would not be letting anything like this happen to her. She hated hospitals and people worrying over her.

As he pulled her shirt away from her skin Carlisle audibly gasped at the big purple and black site his eyes were met with. The whole left side of Bellas's chest was bruised with blood spotting at skin level. He reached forward and tenderly probed Bella's side, instantly regretting it. Bella let you sheer screams of pain, too tired to roll over she began choking on her own sick, spluttering into the oxygen mask over her face. Carlisle sprang into action, pulling Bella onto her side so Bella did not choke.

Should have seen that one coming..." he thought to himself.

"We are going to need to remove the foreign fragment in her head and stitch this up, do some X-rays as well, I think she may need a cast for her foot. I am also worried about a developing concussion because of her fever and vomiting", Carlisle mentioned to the nurse as he wiped Bellas mouth with a damp cloth, removing the oxygen mask and opting for a more manageable nasal supply, hooking the chords over Bella's ears and laying her onto her back. The nurse nodded and went into the other room, prepping the instruments he would need.

Bella was now continuously groaning obviously in a lot of pain. Carlisle's careful physician eyes which never missed anything noticed a shift in Bella's demeanor. Her eyes were fluttering, her heart rate was speeding and she was becoming less responsive to his call.

"Bella? Bella!? Don't go to sleep. You have to stay awake, or it could be dangerous. Bella..." Carlisle said, but it was too late. He watched as Bella's eyes rolled to the back of her head and she was no longer conscious.

Immediately, Carlisle pressed a button and a dozen doctors and nurses rushed into the room taking Bella's bed and the equipment she was attached to and began running through the hospital to the nearest operating room. Since Bella was no longer conscious the situation had gotten much more serious and Carlisle was going to make sure nothing was missed. As they were running down the hall he took the time to get out his phone and call his son. He knew Edward would want to know what is going on. The phone didn't even have a chance to ring before there was an answer.

"They still aren't he-"

"Edward," Carlisle cut him off. "I need you to get down to the hospital right now. It's Bella. There was an accident." There was a small whimper on the other side of the line and Carlisle could hear the wind from Edward immediately running at vampire speed towards the hospital.

"That mutt is in so much trouble," Edward hung up the call just as Carlisle made it to the operating room he was running towards.
