The light from the crack in the hospital room door was distracting to Jacob. His sides were aching and his head was throbbing, but he continued to quietly sob.

'What have I done to Bella...' Jacob thought as he wiped a tear that was travelling down his cheek away.

His recent trip across the hospital to Bellas room had almost broken him. He thought Edward was playing her injuries up from the first time they spoke, to try and make Jacob feel bad about what happened. But he was not expecting the scene he just experienced.

He remembered as he was pulled out of the doorway by a nurse as she rushed inside to assist Carlisle with moving Bellas bed from the room, to take her away to an operating room. He remembered Edward standing in the doorway, his face reflecting something of pure terror, eventually turning to Jacob with a murderous expression. The image of Edwards face haunted Jacob's mind. After a few minutes of standing rooted to the spot in shock unable to move or look away from Edwards stare a wave of dizziness had overcome him and his heart thumped uncomfortably fast. Jacob swayed on the spot, grabbing his IV pole for balance. A nurse came over looking very unimpressed.

"How did you get over to this ward?" She tutted taking him from behind the elbow, holding him steady, leading him out down the hallway and back to his own ward.

He was placed back into his hospital room, the dressing on his head wound changed again as he bled through from his increased blood pressure. Now, Jacob lay motionless reflecting on the events of the past hour wanting, excruciatingly, for Bella to be ok.

He pressed the call button behind his bed. A few minutes later one of his nurses walked in.

She sighed disapprovingly as she entered, "Did you enjoy your excursion this afternoon?"

Jacob did not respond, just closed his eyes and swallowed.

"Hmm..." the nurse said as she came closer, "Your temperature seems to be up a little bit, did you call for some pain medication?"

"No," Jacob said opening his eyes. "Are you able to get me some information on how Isabella Swan is doing?"

The nurse sighed again, "There is still no news. But, it is getting very late and you need some rest. I am sure there will be news in the morning."

Jacob looked irritated but nodded.

"I am going to give you some medication through your IV anyway, I would like to get your temperature under control."

She left the room, coming back seconds later, injecting something into Jacob's IV and left without another word.

Jacob lay back on the bed and stared out the large window that overlooked the edge of a forest, it was raining outside, no surprises there. The medication must have been strong as, within minutes, Jacob's eyes were drooping. He only had a few seconds to feel suspicious of the substance the nurse had placed into the IV as it was curiously putting him to sleep quicker than anything she had previously given him. Soon, he was asleep, but his dreams were no saviour from his conscious reality.

He saw Bella's face, everything was moving as though it was in slow motion. She was smiling, no, laughing. He looked lovingly into her warm brown eyes as they found his, small crinkles formed around the sides from her laughing.

"Jake... stop... take me back to Edward, he won't be happy if you take me back late", Bella said laughing as she playfully punched Jacob on the side of his arm.

"Why don't you stay for dinner... call him," Jacob said, pouting slightly.

"Jake.." Bella was semi-serious. "I have to go."

His face fell in defeat, "Alright."

They walked towards the Rabbit, he opened the car door for her, trying in a vain attempt to impress Bella. Though, he didn't know why he tried anymore.

She stopped for a moment, watching him beckoning her inside the passenger side and scoffed. "Alright Jake, stop trying so hard."

A chuckle escaped his mouth, "Ha... busted."

He walked to the drivers' side and got in, revving the engine to life.

"I'll take you back to your bloodsucker boyfriend," he rolled his eyes backing out of the small driveway beside his house.

They were travelling along the road next to the high cliff faces, he caught Bella watching the swirling water below and he smirked, she was so cute.

He turned towards her, reaching out to place a stray hair back behind her ear.

Bella quickly pulled back, going uncomfortably rigid.

"Jake..." She said, looking awkwardly at him. "Sorry..."

Jake pulled his hand away, gripping the steering wheel tightly lost in thoughts.

Stop trying Jake... you only get rejected. She sees something in that blood-sucking stone statue. The sooner you understand that the better it will be.

"JAKE!" Bella's scream pulled him out of his thoughts.

He didn't realise but in his anger, he had slowly pressed his foot further down on the accelerator and had crossed over to the other side of the road. The sound of Bella's scream had brought him back to his senses long enough to register there was a minivan heading in the other direction and he was hurtling towards it.

"No!" He screamed, planting his feet down on the break in an act to stop the accident from happening. He watched in horror as they crashed into the minivan, his head hitting the steering wheel hard, his airbag refusing to activate.

His final memory before everything went black was looking over to Bella and watching her lifeless body being slowly crushed by the interior plastic of the car, wrapping itself around her.

He woke up gasping, realising he was in his hospital room, his head thumping. There was a light sheen layer of sweat across his skin. He looked at the light streaming in through the window. There were some wet tears on his cheek, he surmised he must have been crying in his sleep as he recalled the events of the crash again.

Mindlessly, he pressed the call button once and then twice, anxious for someone to come and give him the news on Bella.

A nurse came running in, different to the night before, obviously assuming the situation was urgent due to the number of times the call button was pressed. She resorted to walking as she noticed he was not in any immediate emergency.

"I need you to tell me how Isabella Swan is doing," Jacob said sternly.

"Yes," she said professionally, "Dr Cullen came early this morning and mentioned you might want an update when you woke up".

"Well?" Jacob said impatiently, the tone did not seem to work on the nurse as he eyed him unapprovingly. He was slightly taken aback that Carlisle had thought to send a message to him on the outcome of Bella's operation.

"She is out of surgery," the nurse said matter of factly.

Jacob sat silent and nodded his head pressing for more information.

"And... she is stable. They have been able to help with the punctured lung. She has not woken up from the operation yet. Dr Cullen also mentioned he would be coming past later this morning to see how your healing process is going."

Jacob was taken aback.

"He should be here within the hour," the nurse said looking at her watch. "Is there anything I can get for you in the meantime?"

Jacob shook his head. The nurse nodded and left the room.

He hardly had a minute to think about why Carlisle would be coming back to his room before there was a slight knock at the door and in walked Carlisle.
