Rosie looked up at the clock in the gymnasium where she was doing her exam. There was still about half an hour left. It was the last exam of the week. Her math exam. She was done. She had even gone over it once to make sure she hadn't missed anything and to make sure everything looked good. She looked up at the teacher Mr. Bass who smiled at her. Her math teacher. He had been her favorite teacher of the year. Even after her losing her shit in his class that one day. He hadn't changed how he treated her, and she appreciated that. And he was a really good teacher. He expected the students to do their work, but he also made learning fun.
She started to tap her pencil not noticing the dirty looks she was getting till Mr. Bass came over.
"Stop tapping please." He said quietly
Rosie made a face and put the pencil down "Sorry."
"You done?" He asked
Rosie nodded.
"You looked it over?" He asked
"Yes." Rosie said
"I can take it than?" He asked
Rosie nodded.
"Congratulations on finishing your first year of highschool." He said softly
She smiled "Thank you." She whispered
When the half hour was done, and all the tests had been collected everyone went out. Rosie discussed with a few of her classmates what they got for certain questions to compare.
Rosie noticed her social studies teacher standing there. "Miss Rossi may I speak to you?"
Rosie looked at her friends. "Text me. I'll have you over to swim this summer." She told them before looking at her teacher.
"Yes?" She asked
He led her to a classroom where her guidance counselor as well as another student was.
"Have a seat Miss Rossi." He said
Rosie sat down. She could sense something was wrong.
"I just got finished marking the exams for your class and I was surprised in a good way about your grade." He said
Rosie smiled. "I did well than?"
"You did." He said
"It doesn't seem like you are happy about it?" Rosie said
"Who were you sitting next to in the exam?" He asked
"Um." Rosie thought. "Oh. It was him." She said pointing to the other student in the room.
"That's what I thought. You two received the exact same grade." The teacher said
"Okay." Rosie said
"Same questions right and wrong. And wrong in the same way. Every question." The teacher said
It didn't take a genius at that point to figure out what was going on.
"You think one of us copied off the other?" Rosie asked
"Correct." Her teacher said
"I cant say if he did. But I did not." Rosie said
The teacher looked at the other student who had been silent till than.
"I certainly didn't cheat." He said
The guidance counselor looked between the two of them. "You are both good kids. Whomever cheated needs to fess up. Come clean and the consequences will be much less."
"I promise I didn't cheat." Rosie said
"Neither did I." The other student said
"Miss Rossi. You have struggled through this class this semester. I have to admit the fact that your grade was suddenly so much better does raise questions." The teacher said
"It was better because I studied my ass off." Rosie said clearly upset. "And I had someone helping me study." She added
"You didn't study all semester?" He asked
"I did. But I didn't fully understand till someone explained it to me in a different way." Rosie said
"Okay. Well. I cant prove one way or another. I will be calling both your parents." Her teacher said
"Why?" The other student asked "I have done well all semester. Clearly she is the one who cheated."
"I did not cheat." Rosie said loudly. "I thought that each row was given a different exam to stop this kind of thing from happening." She was in tears.
"I will be calling both your parents and we will figure this out." The teacher said. "You can both go." He said
Rosie got up and went outside. She was still in tears. She looked around. Her dad was supposed to be picking her up.
She looked at her phone and saw a missed text.
'Got called to a case locally. You'll have to take the city bus.' Dave had texted her
Rosie sighed.
Cass came up from behind her. "Hey!" She said. The two hadn't been as close the last few months. Still friendly but Rose had felt her pulling away. She didn't understand why but she had also been making new friends, so she figured she wasn't going fight for a friendship. She had fought to keep her two childhood best friends and she ended up being completely shattered.
Rosie looked up at her.
"What's wrong?" Cass asked. She had known she had been pulling away from Rose. Her feelings had grown to much and she was afraid if she spent much time with her it would come out. She wasn't ready for that.
"They think I cheated on my social studies exam." Rosie said
"What?! Who does?" Cass asked
"Mr. Darvis." Rosie said annoyed
Cass rolled her eyes. "He doesn't care all semester and than suddenly cares."
"And I didn't cheat." Rosie said
"Why does he think you cheated?" Cass asked
"I guess the student next to me got the same grade same questions wrong and wrong in the exact same way. And because I'm the student who struggled all semester and the grade was good it makes it look like I am the one who cheated." Rosie said
"You did well? That's great!" Cass said. She had known social studies was her biggest struggle this semester.
"Yeah. But if I cant prove I didn't cheat I'm probably going to end up with a 0 and that means I will fail the class." Rosie said
"Hey. Don't worry about that right now. You didn't cheat. And obviously the other student did. Who is it?" Cass asked
"Why?" Rosie asked
"I'm going to have a word with him. He will tell the truth." Cass said
"No. Cass. Please. Its already going to be bad enough. Mr. Darvis is calling my dad…" Rosie said
"Good. Your dad is like the coolest dad ever. He will defend you." Cass said
Rosie chuckled. "What is your definition of cool? Because your mom, is the cool parent."
Cass chuckled. "You have a ride?"
"No. Was going to take the bus." Rosie said
"Come on. I'll drive you home." Cass said
Rosie went with her. Cass started to drive towards home.
Rosie took out her phone. 'Math exam went well. Cass is driving me home. You are going to get a call from Mr. Darvis. My social studies teacher. He's going to tell you that me or another student cheated on the exam. I promise you it was not me. I don't think he believes me. But I promise you I didn't.' she sent the text. She wanted to get to him before her teacher could.
Dave was driving with Morgan to arrest a suspect when he got the text.
"Its probably Rosie. Can you check?" Dave asked Morgan as Dave was driving.
Derek picked up the phone and read out the text.
Dave sighed.
"We believe her right?" Derek asked
"Yes. We do. Reid studied with her and assured me that she was ready. She wouldn't need to cheat." Dave said
Derek nodded.
"The fact that she came to you upfront means she trusts you completely." Derek said
Dave nodded. "She knows I appreciate hearing things from her as oppose from other sources."
"But that doesn't mean its easy for teens to do." Derek said
Dave nodded. "Agreed, I would go out of my way to avoid telling my parents things. I feared them. That's not how have ever plan to do things with Rosie."
"Yeah. It was the same with my mom. I was scared of her. And I mean its one way of parenting I suppose. But if kids are in my future that's not how I'm going to do it." Derek said
Rosie got home and went inside. She sighed. Her mood had been so good. Now it was shit. She looked at the mess in the dining room. She knew her dad had put up with it for the week but wouldn't for much longer. She went and cleaned it up taking all the stuff up to her room and putting it in her closet. She wouldn't need it again for awhile.
She got a text from her dad.
'I believe you. Do not worry about it. Just relax. I'm proud of you.'
Rosie let out a breath of relief. She didn't care what her teacher thought. She cared what her dad thought.
She grabbed a book and went to the library and sat and read.
Dave came home around 8:30 that evening and found Rosie in the library.
"Hi." Dave said
Rosie looked up. "Hi."
"Have you eaten?" Dave asked
Rosie looked at her watch. "Nope. Didn't realize the time."
"Come on. Let whip something up." Dave said
Rosie went with him, and they cooked something together before sitting down to eat.
"I talked to your teacher. There is a meeting on Monday. We will figure this all out." Dave said
Rosie nodded. "Okay."
"But as I said. I believe you." Dave said
Rosie nodded. "I'm glad. Because it's the truth." Rosie said looking at him.
Dave nodded. "I know."
Rosie tilted her head questioningly
"One. I know when your lying. Two. I know you knew the material. Three. I know you wouldn't cheat. I know you would rather take a failing grade than cheat." Dave said
Rosie nodded. "You're right. But this isn't the first time I was accused of cheating. And didn't do it than either. But didn't stop people from believing I did…"
Dave nodded. "I take it you were punished?"
Rosie nodded.
"Did they ever prove you didn't?" He asked
"Yup." Rosie said, "But the punishment had been done."
Dave nodded. "Did you get an apology?"
"From the teacher, yes." Rosie said
"Not from them?" Dave asked
Rosie laughed. "No. Not from them. They never apologized to me. For anything."
"I'm sorry you went through all that." Dave said
"Not your fault." Rosie said
"I should have protected you better. I should have realized something was off that day in the snow." Dave said
"Daddy. No. Please don't blame yourself. You couldn't have known." Rosie said.
Dave smiled abit. "Okay." He said. He shouldn't have been putting this on her anyways. "Your math exam when well though?" He asked
"Really well." She answered
"Good." Dave said. They finished eating before deciding to watch a movie to end the night.
