Rosie sat on a chair in her bathroom. Penny was standing behind her curling her hair for her.
"You excited?" Penny asked
"Yes. And nervous. First day with a guy who has been my best friend for over a year. If this goes bad I'm going to lose a lot." She said
"Don't think like that. It's not going to go bad." Penny said. "Its one date. Even if you find out you are not compatible for more than friends it doesn't mean it's a bad thing."
Rosie took a breath and nodded.
Penny curled the last strand of hair. "Now. Go get the dress on so I can do your make up." She said
Rosie went and put the dress on and went back into the bathroom.
"Wow. That dress. Is beautiful. And fits you perfectly." Penny said
"Thanks." Rosie said. She sat back down in the chair and Penny did her make up.
"What do you think?" Penny asked when she was done.
Rosie looked in the mirror. "Wow. I look. Different."
"To different? If you don't like it I can change it." Penny said
"No. I look beautiful." Rosie said
"You are beautiful. With or without the makeup." Penny said
Rosie nodded.
"Say it or I take the makeup off." Penny said
"I am beautiful without make up." Rosie said with a smile
"Thank you." Penny said "Now. You like the makeup?"
"Yes." Rosie said.
She looked at herself in a full-length mirror in her bedroom. She put on her shoes and grabbed a white clutch from her closet.
"You look stunning." Penny said
"Thanks. And thank you for helping me get ready.
"Of course." Penny said.
The two ladies went downstairs.
Dave smiled. "You look. Beautiful." He said
"Thank you daddy." She said
There was a knock on the door. Dave looked at her. "Let me get it."
Rosie nodded.
Dave went and opened the door and let the young man in. They had a short conversation. Than Dave called Rosie.
Rosie came out.
Nolan was stunned. "Wow. You look. Stunning."
"Thanks. You look very handsome yourself." Rosie said
"Thank you." He said
Dave held up the camera "Picture. I insist."
Rosie smiled at Nolan. "Sorry."
"Its okay." Nolan said smiling at his date
The two got together and Dave took a couple pictures.
"Now go. Have fun. Have her home by 11:30pm." Dave said
"Yes sir." Nolan said. He held his arm out for her.
Rosie linked arms with him and the two went outside to his car.
He opened the passenger door for her, and she got in. He closed it before going around to his side and starting the drive.
"Its about an hour drive." He told her.
"Well, you told me it was a drive." Rosie said with a smile.
The two talked about a lot of things before they got to the restaurant.
"Wow. I've heard of this place…Its supposed to be amazing." Rosie said
"I've been here once before. With my parents. It was really good." Nolan said
Nolan got out and went around and opened her door. Rosie got out and linked arms with him again they both went inside.
"Reservation for Shephard." Nolan said
The hostess checked the list and nodded. "Right this way." She said leading them to a table. Nolan pulled out her chair for her and Rosie sat down.
Nolan sat down across from her. The hostess handed them both their menus and told them that their waiter would be there shortly.
Rosie looked at the menu and tilted her head.
Nolan saw her look. He knew what the first thing she would see was. He made sure of that. He knew how she was. He knew she would go for the cheapest thing on the menu, but this place didn't list the prices on the menu. He wasn't going to comment on it though.
"What appetizer looks good to you?" Nolan asked
Rosie looked at him.
"I'm thinking the oysters. But not sure. Do you like seafood?" he asked
"Never tried oysters." She said. She knew what he was doing.
"Well, you want to try them?" He asked
Rosie let out a breath. "Sure."
"And I'm thinking the ribeye for the main. What about you?" he asked
Rosie looked. The menu wasn't large. There weren't many options.
"The seafood risotto sounds good." Rosie said
"Yes. That would be my second choice." He said
The waiter came over and introduced himself. "What can I start you to drink?"
They both order some soda and their food.
The waiter took the menus and went off.
"So. Tell me something about you that I don't know." Rosie said to Nolan.
"Hrm. Don't know if there is much you don't know about me." Nolan said.
"Guilty pleasure?" Rosie asked
"Um. Well. If I tell you. You cant laugh." He said
"Never." Rosie said
"I watch pretty little liars." He said
"Oh. A lot of people watch that." She said
"I'm not their target demographic. If the guys knew I would never live it down." He said
Rosie smiled. "Your secret is safe with me."
"Okay. Now back at you. What's your guilty pleasure?" he asked
"Celebrity gossip." Rosie said
Nolan was surprised. "Never expect that from you."
"That a problem?" Rosie asked
"No." Nolan said. "Just a surprise."
Rosie smiled. The waiter came over with their drinks before heading off
"What do you want to do after highschool?" Nolan asked
"Want to study journalism and law." Rosie said
"Wow. Big goals." He said. "School choice?"
"Harvard is my number one choice. But anywhere that will accept me." Rosie said "That is not something I have told anyone before." She said
Nolan nodded. "Understood."
"You want to double major?" Nolan asked
"Nope. Major in journalism. Minor in law. Want to be a crime journalist. Law will help me with that." Rosie said
Nolan nodded "You've thought about this a lot."
"Since I was ten." Rosie said "What about you? What do you want to do?" She asked
"Medical school. Harvard top choice as well." He said
Rosie smiled. "You want to be a doctor or in research?"
"Doctor. Neurosurgeon." He said
"Wow." Rosie said. "That's awesome."
The waiter came over with their oysters.
Nolan took one and explained how to eat them.
Rosie took one and copied what he did.
"What do you think?" Nolan asked after she had swallowed.
"Pretty good." She said with a smile before she took a second one.
"Do you believe in astrology?" Nolan asked
"Never really thought about it." She said. "Do you?"
"Yes. Very much so." He said, "Tarot cards and everything."
"How to you balance all that with your beliefs?" She asked
Nolan smiled at her.
"You don't believe do you?" She asked
"Not really no. I mean. I believe in being a good person. I believe in helping others and treating everyone with respect. And that everyone has the right to their beliefs as long as they don't use their beliefs to hurt others or try and force their belief on others." Nolan said
"You wear a purity ring though." She said
"Somewhat to appease my parents. But also, because I have seen what having sex before being fully committed to someone can lead to." Nolan said. "I don't know if I will actually wait till marriage, but I will wait till I'm sure there is a real future with that person. And that I'm ready for what can come from having sex."
Rosie nodded. "Yeah. I don't think I would be able to give someone that unless I see a real future with them."
"How did you know that it was a purity ring though?" He asked
"I had one. Technically it was forced on me." She said, "I threw it over the lookout in the town I lived in when I lived in California the night I found out everything I knew was a lie."
"Wow." He said
"I don't need a ring to keep that promise. Not that I judge you for keeping yours." She said
Nolan nodded. "If I had been through what you have I would probably have done the same. It wasn't forced on me. It was a discussion. I got to choose. My parents encouraged it but wasn't forced."
Rosie nodded.
"If money was no object what would you buy?" Nolan asked
"Animal sanctuary." Rosie said.
Nolan smiled. "You heart is one of the main reason I like you as much as I do." He said
"What about you?" Rosie asked
"Travel to third world countries and help them get the resources they need." Nolan said
"Your heart isn't exactly small either." She said with a smile.
Their food was brought to the table. They both started to eat and continued to ask each other the deep questions. They had been friends for about a year so they knew all the normal things that you would ask on a first date, so they had to get creative with their questions.
When they were done eating the waiter came over "Desert?" He asked
Nolan looked at Rosie. "I couldn't eat another bite." Rosie said
"We are good." Nolan said with a smile.
"You can get something if you want." Rosie said
"Nope. I'm full too." He said
Rosie smiled and nodded the waiter left to go get them their bill. When the waiter came back Nolan looked at the bill quickly before paying with his card.
The two got up after the bill was paid and they headed out. "I know this beach. We can go for a walk. If you would like." He said
"That sounds great." She said
Nolan opened the door for her again and she got in. He got in as well and drove just a few minutes before parking again and getting out. Rosie got out as well and they started to walk along the beach. They took their shoes off and carried them in their hands. Nolan took her free hand in his as they walked.
"Do you believe in ghosts?" He asked
"Yes." Rosie said point blank.
Nolan looked over at her. "There is a story there." He said
"Yes. There is. Do you believe?" Rosie asked
"I do." Nolan said
"I feel like you have a story too." She said
"My grandfather. Came to me. The night he died. None of us even knew he was dead. I told my parents the next morning and they went to check on him. He was found deceased." Nolan said. "Your story?"
"There was this older gentleman who was part of the same religion. He was kind and gentle and always made me smile. He passed away from health complications. He came to me one night after I had probably the biggest fight with the people who I lived with ever. I felt the lowest I have ever felt in my life. I was debating ending it… I had a plan. I had the pills I was going to take." She said
Nolan squeezed her hand a little harder at that.
"He came to me and told me to just hold on a little longer that it was all going to be okay." Rosie said. "Three days before I broke into the amusement park with my friends." She finished.
"Wow." Nolan said
"That ghost saved my life. That man kept me going while he was alive. And he kept me going in death." Rosie said
"What was his name?" Nolan ask
"Tobias Jacobs." Rosie said "And if I ever have a kid. A boy. He will have Tobias to Toby somewhere in his name."
Nolan nodded. "I obviously don't know this man. But I think he would be honored."
Rosie smiled "I hope so."
"I have to ask. Was the though of suicide a one-time thing?" Nolan asked
"No. It was multiple times I thought about. But it hasn't been for awhile." She said
"Since moving here?" He asked
"Yeah. At first. But I quickly realized that I was safe here and able to be myself. I haven't since." She said
Nolan nodded. "Thank you for trusting me with this."
"I do trust you. I want you to know that I'm okay now. Is life perfect. No. Although this moment comes pretty close." She said with a smile.
Nolan smiled at her. He stopped walking and dropped his shoes. She looked up at him. He put an arm around her waist and leaned in. Rosie leaned in towards him butterflies in her stomach and their lips met as they kissed it felt like time stood still. The fluttering intensifying. She felt sparks. The sparks could only be described as electricity. Their lips parted only a few seconds after the initial contact. She looked up at him and smiled. He looked down at her. The pulled apart.
Nolan picked up his shoes and looked at his watch. "I think we need to start back. I do not want to get you home later than I was told."
Rosie nodded and they walked back to the car together. They got in the car and started for home.
They were both quiet.
"You okay?" He asked after awhile
"Yes." Rosie said. "You?" She asked
"Yes." He said he put on some music and before long they were both singing.
"Have you ever done karaoke?" He asked
"Nope." She said
"Would you?" he asked
"Not a chance. My voice sucks." She said
"No, it does not." Nolan said quickly. "You have an amazing voice."
Rosie looked away.
"Regardless of whatever anyone else has told you." Nolan said.
Rosie chuckled "You know me to well." She said
"I'm taking you to do karaoke for our next date." Nolan said
"Noel…" She said
"Please let me." He said
Rosie sighed and nodded abit
"How about this. We go to the place. It's a karaoke bar. They only ID if you drink." He told her. "And if you really aren't comfortable you don't have to sing." He said
Rosie smiled. "Deal."
They talked some more before he pulled into her driveway at 11:15pm. He got out and walked her to the door.
"I had an amazing time." Rosie said. "Thank you."
"I had a lot of fun too." Nolan said. "Friday after next. Karaoke date?" he asked
"Sounds good." She said
They hugged and said goodnight. Rosie went inside and Nolan went to his car.
Dave was sitting in his office when he heard the door open. "My office." He called out letting her know where he was.
Rosie went in "Hey." She said
"How was it?" Dave asked his daughter. Her eyes were sparkling, and she looked so happy.
"It was perfect dad." She said leaning against the door.
Dave smiled. "I'm glad. Also, glad he got you home technically before curfew." He said
Rosie chuckled. "I'm going to go get ready for bed. Goodnight. Love you." She said before going off.
"Good night. Love you too bambina." He said
Rosie went and laid on her bed sending a text to Taylor. 'Holy shit. I have nothing to compare it to but that was the perfect first date… and the perfect kiss…'
Taylor was watching a movie with her brother when her phone went off. She looked at it and chuckled. "Rosie and Nolan's date went well." She said
Pierce chuckled. "Good. Now when are you going to tell me who it is you like?"
"I don't have a crush on anyone." She said
Pierce smirked. "whatever you say."
'I'm so happy for you two.' She sent back with a bunch of happy face emojis
Rosie got herself ready for bed before going in the bottom drawer of her dresser and digging under the clothes and pulling out a ratty journal. She sat on her bed and opened it up to the back where there was a flap pocket that held a bunch of photos. She took out a photo of her and Tobias. He had really been like a grandfather to her. She touched the picture "Thank you. You saved my life. And I will never forget that." She mumbled to herself. She put the picture away and turned to the first blank page in the journal. She used to journal as a way to keep herself sane. She hadn't written since her second month being in Virginia, but she decided to write about her perfect date. And the perfect first kiss.
