Rosie was double checking her backpack. It was the night before her sophomore year was starting. She was excited. Dave knocked on the open door and Rosie looked up. She could tell something was wrong.
"What is it?" Rosie asked
"Sit." He said
Rosie sat down on her bed and looked up at him.
"I need you to tell me the truth. I'm going to be more upset if you lie to me about this." He said
"Okay." Rosie said slowly
Dave reached into his pocket and pulled out a pack of cigarettes.
Rosie tilted her head.
"I found these in the backyard." He said
"Not mine." Rosie said. Sascha had jumped on the bed and had his head in her lap.
"Okay. Any of your friends smoke?" He asked
"Not that I know of." Rosie said petting the dog abit
"You sure?" Dave asked
Rosie thought about it for a second. "Yes. As far as I know none of the people who I had here smoke. But its possible that I just don't know." She said
Dave nodded. "Okay."
"Dad. I promise. I don't smoke." She said
"I believe you. I didn't really think it was you." Dave said
Rosie let out a breath.
"You ready for school tomorrow?" He asked
"Nope. Need some Chinese food and a movie night than I will be ready." She said with a smirk.
Dave chuckled. "Deal." He went and ordered them food and than went to pick it up. Rosie went to her closet. "What do you think Sascha? Dress? Skirt? Jeans?" She asked the dog
She was about to take out a dress when her phone started to ring. She went to the phone and picked it up.
"Hey Noel." She said answering
"So. I have some news." He said
"Oh?" Rosie said. "Good news?" She asked
"Well. Some bad news and than news… depends how you look at it." He said
"What happened?" She asked
"My ex decided to tell everyone that we had dated. And say nasty things about me. I wouldn't really care expect my school found out and well it's a catholic school and they are the catholic's that don't accept the LGBTQ and well my principal and the school board is kicking both him and I out…" he said
"Shit." Rosie said "I'm sorry. None of that is good news." She said
"No. That's not. But this came out last Monday so my parents and I have been trying to figure out where I should go to school. They wanted me to stay in a catholic school but since its all part of the same school board…" He said
"So. Going to a public school?" She asked
"Yes." He said
"If I had to guess I would say the closest school would be the best choice." She said excitement clear in her voice.
"Yes. I will be going to the same school as you." He said
"Well. That's good news right?" She asked
"Well. I've been going to school with these same people since I was five years old. It kinda sucks." He said
"Well, your friends from school. They know now? They okay with it?" She asked
"Yes and one of the two friends are cool with it." He said
"Well, you can still see that friend right?" She asked
"Yes." He said
"I get it. It still sucks." She said
"Honestly. I think I'm just angry. We are in the 20th century. People need to open their minds up abit more." He said
"I agree." She said
"I'm just glad I have friends that I already know from the school." He said
"Yes. Lots of them." She said. "But I get it still sucks." She said
"Yeah." He said sounding really down.
"But I'm going to show you around. You will have lots of friends. And you always said that you hated that the football team at your school sucked because no one but you really cared. This school they definitely care." Rosie said.
"If I'm able to get on the team." He said
"I'm sure you will. You are amazing." She said.
"Well thank you." He said
"And the best thing. No matter who you are with. This school is super open and supportive." Rosie said
"You sure know how to make me feel better." He said
"Of course. You're my best friend. If anyone should know how to cheer you up I should. And also, I'm your um… person you are dating…" She said realizing she had wished she had stopped at best friend.
Nolan chuckled. "Were you going to say girlfriend?" He asked
"I. Um. Well…" She stumbled over her words
He laughed.
"You're laughing at me!" She said clearly upset
"I'm sorry." He said sincerely "I have to admit I was wondering what you were thinking about what we are."
"Oh? What do you think?" she asked
"I think. That we have been tiptoeing around liking each other for months. We have been on a date and this week we are going on another date." He said, "I think if we don't say it first our friends will." He said
Rosie laughed. "You are one hundred precent right."
"So. Girlfriend?" Nolan asked
"Yes. Boyfriend." She said
"I do have a question I'm supposed to ask you." Nolan said
"Oh?" Rosie said
"Pierce asked me if I knew anything about who Taylor likes. When I said no. He told me to ask you." Nolan said
Rosie laughed. "I'm not telling either of you."
"Well, he might ask you. I thought I should give you forewarning." Nolan said
"Okay. Thank you." She said, "He should mind his own business." She added sounding annoyed
"Uh oh. Pierce not your favorite person?" he asked
"Well. I didn't have an issue with him till now." Rosie said. "Taylor is not ready to admit who she likes. And he is a big part of the reason. I get it he is the male in the house, but he is her brother not her father and he needs to stick his nose out of it till she wants to tell him. If that ever happens." She added
"Do you want me to tell him this?" Nolan asked
"Nope. I can do it if he decides to ask me." Rosie said
Rosie heard the door open. "Sounds like my dad is back with the food I should probably go. But I will see you at school tomorrow." She said
"Sounds good. See you than." Nolan said before they hung up.
Rosie went downstairs. "Smells good."
"Yes it does." Dave said. They took everything out of the bag and filled up a plate and took their plates and chopsticks to the living room where they put on a movie. They watched the movie and ate. They watched a couple movies. The second movie ended around ten.
Dave looked at her. "You probably should head to bed before it gets too late." He said
"I'll be fine." She said
Dave raised an eyebrow.
"Okay. I wont tell you the news than." She said with a smirk and went to her room and showered getting ready for bed. She climbed into bed. She made sure her alarm was set before going to sleep.
Dave's interest had been piqued but he figured he could find out the news in the morning
