Christmas had come and gone for everyone. Rosie had been spoiled but when her DNA kit results had come in and there hadn't been any connection to anyone who could be her cousin on her mother's side and there was no family what so ever on her mother's side showing up, she was done waiting. She wanted answers. And she wanted them now. She had talked to her dad, and he had agreed to take her to California to the prison to visit Beatrice to see if she was willing to give any information.
Rosie sat in the visitation room at the woman's prison in California. Dave was in the room as well, but he was sitting abit away. He wanted to be there, but he was going to let her have some privacy to get her answers. If there was even a chance of that. But it was a chance he knew his daughter wanted to take. And she had asked him if she could, and he didn't want to make her feel like she had to go behind his back to do these things, so he was allowing it.
Beatrice was brought to the room, and she came and sat down. She was only agreeing to this because she was told that Rosie was willing to put a small amount of money in her prison account if she would talk to her.
Rosie took a breath when she saw her. "So. This is how this works. How much I put in your account depends on how many of my questions you answer. Honestly. I'm done with your bullshit." Rosie said
Beatrice took a breath. "Your daddy lets you swear like that?" she asked snarky.
"He lets me express my feelings and as long as I'm not swearing at someone, for the most part yes." Rosie said "Now my turn to ask questions. I'm not going to beat around the bush and waste either of our times. Are you my aunt." Rosie asked looking her in her eyes.
Beatrice took a breath. "Yes." She said
"How did you know about me? My understanding is my mother didn't talk to her family."
"She connected with me when we were both pregnant." Beatrice said
"Did you name your daughter Rosie because you knew that you would need to kidnap me, and it was easier to have the same name?" Rosie asked
"No. Coincidence. Your mother and I both wanted to name our child Rosie. We debated both choosing a different name. But Rosie was important to your father, so your mother didn't agree to that in the end. It caused a huge fight and that's why we never talked after that. And I figured I would never see you or your mother again so what harm it would do to give my daughter the same name." Beatrice said. She smirked. "But it came in handy in the end."
Rosie took a breath. "What happened to your daughter?"
"I'm not answering that." Beatrice said
"If you want me to put money on your books yes you will." Rosie said. "You are in prison anyways. What difference does it make?"
"Because prison for kidnapping and alleged abuse is far less than for killing someone." Beatrice said quietly.
"I never said I would report what you say." Rosie said quietly as well. She was going to, but Beatrice didn't need to know that
"So, you would lie to your dad?" Beatrice smirked. "Maybe I should tell him that."
"Telling my dad is not reporting it." Rosie said. "And this is my story not his. I don't need to tell him everything."
Beatrice took a breath. "She cried a lot. It bugged Darrell. I came home from shopping one day and she was dead. Darrell told me that it was an accident. And we knew we had a lot more to lose. We gave her a burial and I knew we needed to keep our friends from knowing the truth. We contacted our lawyer and told him about you. I knew your mother had died and we arranged your kidnapping. We hid away from our friends for the couple months it took to happen. Said we went to a third world county to help where the need was great. So, when you came it wasn't a shock that you looked a little different because a good amount of time had passed."
Rosie let out a breath and nodded. "Where was she buried?"
"Our back yard." Beatrice said
"Your backyard was checked with ground penetrating radar. Try again." Rosie said
"That's where she was buried. Don't know what to tell you." Beatrice said.
"Did anyone know the truth?" Rosie asked
Beatrice looked away. "No."
Rosie let out a huffed laugh trying to hold back the tears. "Lie to me again and you get nothing." Rosie said "Who?" she asked
Beatrice took a breath. "At the time no. When Paige's family moved into the area we trusted them enough and told them."
Rosie let a couple tears fall. "Did Lexi's parents know too?"
"No. Because they weren't as trust worthy in my eyes." Beatrice said
Rosie nodded and wiped at her tears. "Do you know if Paige knows?"
"I don't know. I doubt it." Beatrice said
Rosie nodded. "Why the hell did you abuse me and let me abused after what happened to your daughter?"
"We didn't abuse you. We disciplined you. You are a brat. You needed to be taught." Beatrice said
"How was I a brat? I did NOTHING while living with you. I acted like the perfect little Jehovah's witness daughter that you wanted. Did what I was told when I was told." Rosie said "Pretended to be something I wasn't just to keep you and him happy." Rosie said tears falling fast now.
"You weren't our daughter. You were a means to an end. We didn't need to treat you well." Beatrice said
"Where did you bury her. The truth or you get nothing." Rosie said
"I told you where she was buried." Beatrice told her
"The backyard of the house I lived in with you. Has been checked. You are lying." Rosie said
"That's where she was buried." Beatrice said
Rosie stood up. "You get nothing." She said before walking over to her dad. The guards went to take Beatrice away.
"Or maybe she's not actually dead." Beatrice said with a smirk
Rosie took a breath and turned back around. "How about your do ONE decent thing for your daughter and tell the truth!" Rosie said loudly
"She was just a burden. Just like you." Beatrice said before going with the guards.
Rosie broke down sobbing. Dave put his arms around her. Rosie hugged him and took a few breaths to calm herself.
"You are not a burden. You are a wonderful human being and you do not let her get under your skin." Dave said
Rosie nodded taking another breath.
The two of them went to leave the room. Rosie felt something hit her leg gently. She looked down. It was a piece of paper. Rosie looked up at the person who was sitting at the table next to where she was standing.
"You dropped something honey." The woman said with a smile.
Rosie looked down at the paper. "Oh. Thanks." Rosie said with a smile picking it up.
Rosie left with her dad. They were given back their phones and such and went out to the car.
"That wasn't really something you dropped was it?" Dave asked
Rosie took a breath. "Nope."
They got into the car. "Show me." He said
Rosie showed him. It was a note.
'I don't know if she was telling me the truth or not, but Beatrice told me that her daughter was buried in the only peaceful place she knew.' The note said
Rosie let out a huffed breath.
"Do you know where that is?" Dave asked
Rosie thought about it. "Maybe."
"Where?" Dave asked
"There was this place. She took me a few times a year. Told me to never tell Darrell. That she didn't want him to know about the place. That it was her peaceful place. That it could be our peaceful place as long as I didn't tell him. I don't really remember where it is though." Rosie said
Dave nodded. "What did she say in there today?"
"She told me. That my mother contacted her when they were both pregnant. They both wanted to name their child Rosie. Had discussed both picking a different name but that Rosie was important to you so my mother wouldn't do that and its what caused an argument and them to not talk again. Than she found out my mother passed away and figured we would never connect and that it didn't hurt to give the same name." Rosie said
Dave nodded and started to drive the rental car.
"Apparently Paige's parents know the truth." Rosie said
Dave nodded. "Okay. I'll make sure the police know that."
"Dad. Can you please get the BAU involved? They wont stop till they get answers. I don't know if I trust the law enforcement around here to do that." Rosie said
Dave took a breath. "How about this? We will go talk to Captain Franklin. So, you can see he is serious about finding out the truth."
Rosie nodded. "Okay."
Dave started the drive to Rocklin, California.
When they got there they got to the police station, and they went inside.
Captain Franklin saw them and smiled. "Well, hello. What brings you two here?"
"Rosie. Has some doubts. About how serious you are taking the case to finding the Long's daughter. I just thought if you two talk. She might feel better about it. Also, she just got done talking to Beatrice and has some new information." Dave said
The captain nodded. "Okay." Lets go to a conference room." He led them to a room
Rosie took a breath.
"You okay?" Dave asked
"Yeah. This is the same room…" She said
Captain Franklin looked at her. "You okay in here?"
"Yes." Rosie said.
They all sat down.
The Captain looked at Rosie. "You know that this town. Nothing ever happens. This is big news. I promise you that everything is being done to find their daughter."
Rosie nodded. "When I was talking to Beatrice. She told me that they buried her in their backyard. But you checked that right?"
"Yes. We used ground penetrating radar on a few places. The backyard was one." He said
Rosie took out the piece of paper. "As I was leaving. Someone got this to me. I'm not going to give any information on who it was. I don't want them to get in trouble but." She showed the Captain it.
Captain Franklin nodded. "Any ideas where that might be?"
"I have a place in mind, but I don't really know where it is." Rosie told him and explain what she had told Dave.
The Captain nodded. "You would drive there?"
"Yes." Rosie said
"How long was the drive?" Captain Franklin asked
"Three and a half hours." Rosie said
The Captain tilted his head.
"I checked the time before we left and as we got there the last time we went. Because I always fell asleep in the car." Rosie said
"You cant sleep in a car." Dave said
"I usually cant. That trip was the only time I ever did." Rosie said
Dave looked up at the Captain who nodded. "Is it possible she gave you something that made you sleep?"
Rosie shrugged. "Maybe."
"Okay. So, no idea at all. What did the place look like?" Captain asked
"It was a large, beautiful field. With a small forest on the back of it. There was a small clearing in the forest. We would sit and have a picnic lunch. It was so peaceful. It was like she was in a trance when we were there." Rosie said
Dave tilted his head. "Was there a huge oak tree. With engraved initials?"
Rosie looked up at him confused. "Yea… BN + BN."
The Captain looked up at Dave.
"The only story her mother ever told me about her family. Was about her sister. When they were young they would go to this piece of land. Owned by someone in their family. Bianca called it their special place. She never really told me why but that was the only time she would see her sister a few times a year. I assumed it was that they both were in foster care and not together and they would visit a distant family member who owned the land and that's where they saw each other." Dave said "She told me the last time they saw each other they knew it would be the last time so they engraved that tree and promised that no matter what they would try and get back there on the same four days every year. Bianca went back those four days for three years before she moved to the DC area, but her sister was never there." Dave said
Rosie took a breath. "But they didn't grow up in California…I thought."
Dave tilted his head.
"Beatrice told me she grew up in Oregon." Rosie said
"Yes. I looked into it. She grew up at the boarder of California and Oregon. But they could have had family in California when they were kids." The Captain said
Rosie nodded.
"Also, the Lowrey's apparently knew about the whole situation." Rosie said
The Captain nodded. "Okay. I'll look into this as well."
Rosie nodded. She took a breath.
"Is there something else?" Captain Franklin asked
Rosie told him everything that Beatrice had told her while she was at the prison
The Captain nodded "Anything else?"
Rosie shook her head
"You sure?" He asked
"Just. Wish I knew where this place was…" Rosie said
"I'm going to make sure its looked into. And I can let your dad know if we figure it out." The Captain said
Rosie nodded.
"You ready to go back to the hotel?" Dave asked
Rosie shrugged.
"If you want to wait. I can see if I can get my officers to figure it out now." The Captain said looking between Rosie and Dave."
Rosie looked up at her dad.
"Rose. Lets go to the hotel. If they figure it out soon we can come back. But you haven't eaten all day and you need to eat." Dave said.
Rosie sighed.
The Captain nodded. "I will call him if anything is found."
Rosie nodded. "Okay. Thank you."
Dave and Rosie got up and left and went to the hotel to the little restaurant in the hotel and had lunch.
Dave looked at Rosie. "Why didn't you tell me about this place?"
Rosie shrugged.
"I'm not upset. Just curious." Dave said
She shrugged again.
Dave took a breath. "You are allowed to have good memories from a bad situation."
Rosie looked up at him.
"You being taken from me and the abuse you dealt with was awful. But I also know you have good memories with your friends and such. And even kids who are abused by their parents have good memories with them." Dave said, "I also get the feeling that Darrel was more abusive to you than Beatrice was."
Rosie nodded abit.
"Is that why you never told me about this place?" Dave asked
Rosie nodded.
"Okay. Well. I'm glad you got to go to a place that was so important to your mom." Dave said with a smile.
"I wish I could have experience it with her." Rosie said
Dave nodded. "I get that."
"Why didn't you ever tell me about this place?" Rosie asked
"I had forgotten about it. Having no idea where it was made me forget her telling me about it." Dave said
Rosie nodded
They were finishing up when Dave's phone rang. Dave looked at it and answered and spoke to the Captain when he hung up he looked at Rosie. "They found a place that would fit the location. Owned by your maternal grandfather." Dave said
Rosie nodded. "He is still alive?"
"Apparently. The police are heading there. Do you want to go?" Dave asked
"Yes!" Rosie said
Dave paid and they started the drive. Dave had been given the address and the go ahead to go that they would meet the police there.
They started the drive.
"Would you sleep the entire way there every time?" Dave asked
"I would be in and out of sleep for most of the time." Rosie said
"If you happen to notice anything that is familiar you can let me know." Dave said
Rosie nodded and watched out the window. The two of them were pretty silent the entire drive. Rosie only started to recognize things when they got to the last couple miles before getting to the piece of land. It was as Rosie described it. A large field with a small forest on the north-east corner. There were a few police cars parked on the side of the road. It was all farm land around so there was no other traffic.
Rosie and Dave got out and the Captain came up to them. "This the place?" He asked Rosie
"Yes sir." Rosie said
The captain nodded. He looked at the officers. "Get the radars from the back of the vehicle. Lets start looking."
The officers did as told.
Rosie and Dave were allowed to walk around the property.
"Did you want to see the tree?" Rosie asked Dave
"Sure." Dave said
Rosie led him to a clearing in the forest and went up to the tree and ran her hand over the engraving taking a deep breath..
Dave looked at the tree and nodded. "The more cursive one. That looks like your mom's writing."
Rosie let out a huffed breath holding back tears and touched the cursive BN.
Dave put a hand on her shoulder. "You okay?"
Rosie nodded. "It still feels. So peaceful. Like there is a protective spirt surrounding me."
Dave nodded. "Well. We did learn from your DNA testing that you are part native. And from my limited understanding they believe in the great spirit. Maybe this place being something special to your mom means her spirit is here and making you feel safe. And maybe some other ancestors as well." Dave said
Rosie took a breath. "I would like to learn more about that part of me."
"We will see if we can find out what tribe or clan your ancestors were part of and can connect you with someone from it to see if they can help you with that." Dave said
Rosie smiled up at him. "Really?"
"Yes. I want you to be able to know all about who you are and where you come from." Dave said "And I can teach you about my side but I would not be able to do justice to your moms."
Rosie nodded.
"What are you doing on my property." A man asked from about ten feet away
Dave looked up and put Rosie behind him. "My name is Dave Rossi. This is my daughter. We are here with the police. They are over there if you want to talk to them." Dave said nodding to where the police were.
The man went over to the police and Dave followed with Rosie behind him
"I'm Captain Franklin of the Rocklin Police. Is this your property?" He asked
"Yes. Belongs to my family." He said
"Your name?" The Captain asked
"Kele Nowak." He said "Why are you on my property?"
The police handed him a search warrant.
"You are Beatrice and Bianca's father?" The Captain asked
"Yes. But I haven't seen them in many years." Kele said he looked at Rosie. "Are you Bianca's daughter? I know she had one. You look a lot like her. And a lot like my other granddaughter. Beatrice's daughter." He said
"You know where Beatrice's daughter is?" The Captain asked
"Yes. She lives with me." Kele said
"How long?" The Captain asked
"Since she was two. Beatrice asked me to take her when her husband was getting abusive towards her." Kele said "Are you Bianca's daughter?" He asked Rosie again
Rosie looked at her dad and the police Captain both of whom nodded telling her she could answer.
"Yes sir." Rosie said
Kele smiled. "You are so beautiful. Just like your mother."
Rosie smiled "Thank you."
"Why do you have a warrant?" Kele asked the police Captain.
"There has been some confusion about where Beatrice's daughter ended up. There is no record of her being given to you." The Captain said
"It wasn't done with the law in anyway. It was done privately. Beatrice had all right to come visit her any time she wanted. She choose not to." Kele told them. "But I don't see why that is a problem."
"Well. That on its own isn't the problem. It seems when Beatrice brought her daughter to you she wanted to cover up that her daughter wasn't around anymore and decided knowing that Bianca had a daughter the same age. Well. She and her husband hired someone to kidnapped your other granddaughter. They were raising her for eleven years. Till they were discovered. And she went back with her dad." The Captain told him indicating to Rosie and Dave.
Kele was stunned. "That must have been her husband's idea. Beatrice would not do that on her own. And Bianca passed?"
"Maybe. We only know what the evidence shows are neither Beatrice nor Darrel said much about that in court." The Captain said
"And Bianca passed in child birth.." Dave said
"Sorry…" Rosie said looking down
"No. That is not your fault." Kele said.
Dave put a hand on her shoulder. "She would not want you blaming yourself. She wanted nothing more than to have a daughter. She passed away but I see everything good that she was in you. Every. Day. She would be so proud of the woman you are."
Rosie smiled abit and nodded
"Why didn't you keep in contact with your daughters?" Dave asked
"My girls like myself and several of our ancestors were part of the residential school system. We were taken from our home and those in charge tried to have every part of our culture taken away from us. I only saw the girls a few times a year. And while they were at school someone led them to believe that I was an alcoholic and made it so when they graduated they didn't want to come home. At all." Kele said trying to keep his composure. "I don't know who would have put that idea in their mind. That was not a common practice with in those who ran the schools. I don't know if it was the families they had to live with. But I know someone put that idea in their heads."
"So… You a-aren't?" Rosie asked
"No. And neither was my father…" Kele said
"And my cousin is alive?" Rosie asked softly
"That was a question?" Kele asked
"Beatrice and Darrel wouldn't give consistent stories about where their daughter was so yes. It was one of the thoughts." The Captain said
"I will take you to see her. She is very much alive." Kele said.
"We weren't here but half an hour and you showed up. Beatrice would bring Rosie here a few times a year and you never noticed?" The Captain asked
"What? No. I never did." Kele said looking at Rosie. "Was it always the same days every year?"
Rosie nodded. "It always coincided with four major holidays or something. Memorial day, with in the first few days of summer. Thanksgiving and Christmas time. I don't know how much you knew but Beatrice didn't celebrate the holidays, so it did always seem strange that it was those times, but it always was."
Kele nodded. "We are not here those times. Beatrice would have known that. She picked times that she knew we often weren't around."
"Is her name still Rosie?" Rosie asked
"No. When I was told that Beatrice named her daughter the same thing as well. You." He said looking at Rosie. "I had it changed."
Rosie nodded.
"Beatrice told me what the situation was, and I knew some day you two would meet. I just knew it and I wanted you to have different names." Kele said. "I don't know what caused the rift between my daughters, but I knew Beatrice had done that to be unkind. I saw it when she told me that both my granddaughters had the same name.
"What's her name?" Rosie asked
"Rabecca. She goes by Becca." Kele told her
Rosie nodded
Kele told the police the address and they all went towards the house.
Rosie was quiet.
"What are you thinking?" Dave asked
"Scared. Confused. If Beatrice gave her up why did I have to come into the situation. She choose this." Rosie said
"I don't know if you will ever get a clear answer." Dave said
"Its not fair." Rosie said
"I'm sorry bambina. I know its not." Dave said
They were quiet again. "You sure you're ready for this?" Dave asked
Rosie shrugged.
"We don't need to do this. The police will verify that she is there and okay and we can arrange to see them in the future when you are ready." Dave said
"No. I want to do this. I have wanted answers for over a year. I'm getting my answers." Rosie said
"Okay." Dave said.
They pulled into the driveway behind Kele and the police Captain and another officer.
They all got out and went inside.
