Rosie sat at her computer. Looking at the facebook page for her mom's best friend. She had a message typed up and was just trying to work up the nerve to press the send button. She could feel her heart in her throat. Butterflies in her stomach. She didn't know if this was a good idea. She had spent the morning finishing up homework and laundry from the day before but now she had nothing to distract her till Nolan came over and that wasn't for a couple hours still.

She got up from her desk and grabbed the book she was reading and went and sat on her window seat and tried to read but her mind kept wandering back to the message. She decided to leave her room and went downstairs and decided to make some brownies. They were Nolan's favorite. She started to get out the ingredients for them.

Dave came into the kitchen. "What you making?" he asked with a smile

"Brownies. Where is the cocoa powder?" Rosie asked

Dave went over to the cupboard she was looking in and moved a couple things around. "Looks like we are out." He said

"Oh…" Rosie said

"How much of it do you need?" He asked

Rosie looked at the recipe. "half a cup." Rosie said

"Go ask Ms. Jarvis." Dave said with a smile.

Rosie smiled and went knocking on her door.

Ms. Jarvis opened it. "Hello sweetie."

"Hi. How are you?" Rosie asked

"I'm good. How are you?" Ms. Jarvis asked

"I'm good. Trying to make brownies. And don't have any cocoa powder, could I please borrow half a cup of cocoa powder?" Rosie asked

"Come on in. Of course." Ms. Jarvis said

Rosie went inside. Ms. Jarvis led the way to the kitchen and grabbed her the cocoa from her cupboard and looked inside. "There is about half a cup left in here." Ms. Jarvis said handing it to her.

"Is that all you have left? I don't want to take the rest of what you have." Rosie said

"Nah. I have more." Ms. Jarvis pointed out two other unopened containers.

Rosie smiled. "Okay. Thank you!"

"Of course. What has inspired the brownie making?" Ms. Jarvis asked

"Oh. Um. Nolan is coming over and they are his favorite." Rosie said

"Ooh. First time baking something for him?" Ms. Jarvis asked

Rosie smiled and blushed a bit nodding.

Ms. Jarvis smiled "You have a recipe?"

"Yes." Rosie said. "I have made brownies before just not for him."

Ms. Jarvis smiled. "Good. You went to California didn't you?"

Rosie nodded.

"Went well?" Ms. Jarvis asked

"Somewhat." Rosie said

Ms. Jarvis could tell it wasn't something she wanted to talk about right now. "Well. I'm going to let you go so you can make your brownies. The next time I stay with you if you want we can talk about it."

Rosie smiled abit and nodded. "Okay."

Ms. Jarvis showed her out and Rosie went back home and started to make the brownies. She pulled them out of the oven as soon as they were done so they could cool before Nolan got there and she could ice them.

Dave came into the kitchen and saw the mess in the kitchen and that Rosie was covered in flour and cocoa powder and took a picture with his phone.

"DAD!" She screeched

Dave laughed. "I created you I get to take any photos I choose of you."

Rosie sulked.

He took a photo of that too.

"Dad! Stop!" Rosie said

"Okay. I'm sorry. Why don't you go get cleaned up. I'll clean up the kitchen." He said

"Okay. Thank you." She said going off.

Dave cleaned up the kitchen. He took the brownies out of the pan once they had cooled enough so speed up the cooling process. He also mixed up the icing for her.

Rosie came back down to see them on a cutting board. "How did you get it out of the pan in one piece?"

"That's why you greece the pan before hand." He said

"Well yes. But I never can get it out in one piece." Rosie said

"Practice." Dave said. "Made the icing too for when its cooled."

"Thank you." She said

"You're welcome." He said.

She finished icing them just as there was a knock at the door. She went and opened the door.

Nolan smiled "Hey."

"Hi!" She said. She gave him a hug.

He gave her a hug and wiped some chocolate icing off her nose.

Rosie looked confused to what he was doing till he showed her the chocolate on his finger.

"Oh. I guess I'm a messy baker." She said

"Smells good in here. Brownies?" he asked

Rosie smiled and nodded. "Just finished icing them."

"Well. I look forward to having one. How are you doing?" He asked

"I'm. Okay." She said she led him to the living room where they both sat.

"Want to talk about it?" Nolan asked.

Rosie nodded and told him everything that had happened in California.

Nolan listened and nodded at times. Brushing a tear away when it fell.

"Wow. That was a lot of things to find out in just a few days." Nolan said

Rosie nodded.

"How are you feeling with all of it?" Nolan asked

"Every emotion possible." Rosie said

"Yeah. I think I can get that." Nolan said

"I wanted to tell you because I would want you to tell me, but I really don't want to talk about it anymore right now." Rosie said

"Okay. That's okay." Nolan said wrapping her in a tight hug

Rosie hugged him. "You want a brownie now?"

"Yes!" Nolan said

The two of them went into the kitchen and Rosie got them both a brownie and a glass of milk.

The two of them talked about the drama she had missed at school while she had been away. They went up to her room afterwards and Nolan noticed the computer was opened and on a facebook message.

"I think you forgot to press send on this message." He said going to press enter.

"NO! don't!" Rosie said quickly

Nolan looked up at her taking his finger off quickly, but it was to late. "Uh…"

Rosie put her head in her hands. "Nooo."

Nolan sat next to her. "I'm so sorry. I didn't…"

Rosie sighed. "Its okay. I guess its my karma for sticking my nose into your family's things."

Nolan tilted his head with a smile. "Explain who that is?"

"Apparently my mother's best friend. My dad gave me her name. I guess she was around when I was a baby and there was a rift a few months before I was taken to the point of my dad thinking she and her boyfriend at the time might have been involved in my kidnapping. When she found out she was very hurt I guess, and the rift was made worse. My dad tried to contact her about six months ago to see if she would talk to me about my mom. But she never got back to him. I though she couldn't hold a grudge against me…right?" Rosie said

Nolan nodded. "You were hesitating to send the message because you're scared of her response… or lack there of?"

Rosie nodded

"Well. If she doesn't want to get to know you. That's her loss." Nolan said

Rosie smiled abit.

Dave had heard her scream and came upstairs. "Everything okay?" he asked standing in the open door

Rosie nodded. "Just my karma."

Dave tilted his head.

Rosie explained.

Dave nodded.

"My fault. I should have closed my laptop." Rosie said

Dave nodded. "I'm sure she will get back to you at some point."

"I hope so…" Rosie said

"Don't worry to much about it." Dave said

"Okay. I'll try." Rosie said

Dave left them alone.

Nolan had sat in her window seat and Rosie went and sat with him. Nolan wrapped his arms around her from behind and held her close as she leaned against him and closed her eyes. This is how they sat for the rest of the afternoon.
