The team had all been told what was going on. So, Dave giving notice of the fact that he was taking leave immediately was not a surprise and everyone told him to go take care of his daughter and let them know what they could do to help. Dave booked a flight and headed out to the airport, and he got on the flight and headed home.
While he was on the flight he had a lot of time to think. How did he miss this? It was in his profession to be observant. How did he miss something about the most important person in his life? He felt like a failure as a parent.
When he landed he quickly made his way through the airport and out and grabbed a cab to the hospital. He got there it was early morning. He said who he was and was told where to go. He got to the room, and she was asleep. He sat down and looked at his daughter. Her ankle had been wrapped and she was hooked up to an IV. She looked so small in the hospital bed. His little girl was so strong, but he was starting to think she was to stubborn to admit when she was hurting. And that had to change. He was going to be on her more to talk to him. He had been letting her come to him when she wanted to talk but clearly that wasn't enough and that was going to change.
A nurse came in around 6am. "Morning. You must be dad."
Dave nodded. "Morning. Yes."
She went over to Rosie's side. "I'm sorry. I need to get your vitals checked and some blood taken." She said
Rosie groaned.
"I'm here bambina." Dave said softly
Rosie opened her eyes abit and looked at her dad. "I-I'm sorry daddy." She said tearing up.
"Its okay. We will get through this. Together." Dave said. "I'm not angry. You're not in trouble." He told her
Rosie nodded and put her arm out for the nurse to do what she needed to do.
The nurse took her vitals and some blood before leaving the room.
Rosie closed her eyes again. Dave let her sleep.
Around 7:30 someone came in with a tray of food.
Rosie woke up a bit.
"I know its early, but you need to eat." Dave said
Rosie sat up. Dave helped her lift the bed, so she was sitting up.
Rosie sat and ate the breakfast in front of her.
"You should go get breakfast too." Rosie said to her dad.
"I'm not leaving you alone." He said
"Dad. Its okay. I'll be okay for a bit." Rosie said
"I'm waiting till you are done at least." He said
"Ah. Okay." Rosie said finishing her breakfast. When she was done a nurse came and took the tray. "Good job." She said before she left.
Rosie took a breath. "Dad. I learned long ago how to hide things. Even from the most observant people. This isn't your fault. You don't need to watch me twenty-four seven."
Dave took a breath. "Not a choice that you get to make."
Rosie nodded a bit. "Okay." She wasn't going to argue. "But please go get breakfast."
Dave took a breath. He knew that he needed to set a good example. "Okay. I am hungry. I will be back shortly." He said
Rosie smiled and nodded.
Dave went and got himself a quick breakfast in the cafeteria before going back to Rosie's room.
A doctor came into the room. "Hello. I'm Dr. Harmon. I have taken over for Dr. Kline for the day. I'm taking it your dad?" He aske Dave
"Yes." Dave said. "Dave Rossi."
How are you feeling today?" He asked Rosie
"I don't know. Kind of feeling like an idiot." Rosie said
"You're not." Dr Harmon said "An eating disorder has nothing to do with intelligence. Its about a genetics and biology." He said
She looked up at her dad. "Any one in the family have an eating disorder?"
"Not that I'm aware of by maybe on your mothers side." He said
Rosie sighed. "Any tests able to test that?" She asked the doctor
"Well. Yes. Technically. I take it you have no connections on that side?" Dr. Harmon asked
"Well, no one I want to ask…" Rosie said
"Rosie. I doubt they will judge." Dave said
"But you don't know that for sure. We barely know them." Rosie said. "I don't need to know either way."
"Well. Actually, knowing can help doctors with treatment. So, if you really cant ask anyone we can do some tests to check genetics." Dr Harmon said
She looked at her dad. "Well. I mean the first time I went through this I was with Beatrice. If she had, had one or mom…. She would probably have known."
"Its possible. Its also possible that she didn't say anything because she didn't want to reveal that…" Dave said. "Get the tests done." Dave said
Rosie nodded. "Okay." She said
"But I do have the results from your bloodwork earlier. Numbers are looking better already." Dr. Harmon said
Rosie smiled abit.
"Is there a reason you stopped with the supplements for calcium and iron?" Dr. Harmon asked
"Well… I didn't want to gain weight…" Rosie said
"They don't contain anything that would cause weight gain." Dr. Harmon said.
"I thought…" Rosie said
"Common mistake people make. But generally, supplements for things like calcium and iron don't cause weight gain." Dr. Harmon said
Rosie nodded
"So, you will go back on them now right?" Dr. Harmon asked
Rosie nodded.
"Good. Now. We have one of the best eating disorder clinics within the hospital. They have been notified about you. They will be coming to speak to you both within a couple hours." Dr. Harmon said
Rosie nodded abit.
"Okay." Dave said
"After that I can go home?" Rosie asked
"We will see." Dr. Harmon said
"Okay." Rosie said
Dr. Harmon left the room. About forty-five minutes later a man came into the room with Rosie's file. "Miss Rossi." He asked before he looked up
"Orrick!" Rosie said
"Rosie." Orrick said. "Wait. What are you doing in DC? And aawe Rosie… I'm surprised to see you again."
Rosie tilted her head back looking up at the ceiling.
Dave looked confused. "You two know each other?"
Rosie sighed. "He worked at the eating disorder treatment center in Sacramento…"
"Oh… Good thing?" Dave asked
"I mean. Its not bad. Exactly." Rosie said
"I think she is just upset because she has to face someone who knows how hard she worked to get healthy. And that she made a promise to. Rose. Its okay. It happens." Orrick said.
Dave looked at his daughter. "That the reason? Nothing else an issue?"
"Yes. That's the reason. No. He was probably my favorite person there." Rosie said
"Just probably?" Orrick asked with a smile
Rosie chuckled. "Well, you were the only councillor who actually listened. And you knew how to word things so my parents…at the time wouldn't pull me away from talking to a therapist. And so, I believed that it was not the same as the therapy I was being raised to believe was dangerous."
Orrick nodded. "I recognized the kind of people they were. Dealt with lots of parents like that. But you don't live with your parents anymore? What happened?"
"Well. Um. They weren't actually my parents. Thought they were. Long story. I'm sure it will come out in therapy." Rosie said
"Yes. I'm sure it will." Orrick said
"But this is my dad. My real dad." Rosie said
Orrick looked at him. "Orrick Holloway. I have been doing this along time. And I know all her tricks. So, I promise I will help her get back to where she was."
Rosie mumbled something.
"David Rossi. Glad to know someone who knows what to look for is around." He said.
"Absolutely. And not sure if you remember Rosie but I understand your mumbles better than you would like." Orrick said
Rosie bit her lip. "Sorry."
Orrick nodded. "Well, I can see that you are far more comfortable around your dad than you were with the people you were with in California."
Rosie tilted her head.
"I knew there was abuse going on. I did try to get you help to get out of there I promise but I couldn't prove abuse and I don't know if you ever picked up on it but the doctor who ran that eating disorder treatment out there was a lot like the people you were with." Orrick said
Rosie's jaw dropped. "He was a JW wasn't he?!"
"Yeah. He was…" Orrick said
"I fucking knew it!" Rosie said
"A lot of the things I did to help you and other patients were very much against what he wanted. Well with in legal and normal treatments but not in his eyes. Its why the first chance I got to get out of there I did." Orrick said, "And why several of us got him fired."
Rosie smirked. "good."
"But anyways. Now here. Is one of the best treatment centers in the country if not the best. So, myself and anyone else you work with will be very good." Orrick said
Rosie smiled and nodded.
"Now. Lets talk about what treatment is going to look like. I see here that outpatient is suggested. But I know that doesn't work for everyone. And knowing you as well as I do. I'm skeptical." Orrick said
"I'm in a very different living situation now. Trust me. He is going to be on my ass. He is taking time off work to make sure he is there." Rosie said.
Orrick nodded. "Okay. We will give it a shot. But you know I will not sugar coat things."
"Yes. I know." Rosie said
Orrick looked at Dave. "You ever been around people with eating disorders?"
"Nope. But I will do whatever is needed to help her." Dave said
Orrick nodded. "Okay. Good. I have some pamphlets here I give to parents." He said handing them to him. "Gives a basic overline of what to expect." He gave some to Rosie as well. "There are some difference between the program you were part of before and now so read these too." He said
Rosie nodded. "Okay."
"And I have already put in your first appointment with me Tuesday at 4:30pm. Out patients we try to make sure don't have to miss school for appointments. Do you have a support system at school. Friends who know what is going on?" Orrick asked
"My boyfriend knows yes." Rosie said
"Okay. Is he going to be helpful?" Orrick asked
"Yes." Rosie said, "I have a feeling annoyingly so."
Orrick smiled. "Good. Now how about till your appointment we let your dad take control of what you eat?"
Rosie sighed.
"I think that's a great idea." Dave said
"It will go along way in proving that you can do this as an out patient." Orrick said
"Fine." Rosie said clearly not happy with the decision
"Do either of you have any questions?" Orrick asked
Dave asked a few questions which Orrick answered.
Rosie didn't have any.
"Well. I will see you Tuesday. Rest up and do what you are supposed to do to get that ankle healed." He said
Rosie nodded. "I will."
Orrick left.
Dr. Harmon came back in shortly after. "Well lets get you out of here." He said. A nurse came in behind and started to remove the IV and Dave went with another nurse to fill out discharge papers. Rosie went and changed back into her regular clothes and got into the wheel chair that was waiting for her.
Dave came back in, and a transport person wheeled her out Dave walking with them. When they got to the front door. There was a car waiting for them. Penny driving.
Rosie got into the back seat and Dave got into the front.
"Hey sweetie. How are you feeling?" Penny asked
"I'm okay. Glad its just sprained." Rosie said not fully knowing what everyone knew.
"Rosie. I'm going to be upfront with you. The team all know what's going on." Dave said
Rosie sighed but didn't say anything.
"I'm not going to poke you to talk about it but know that we all are here for you. And none of us think any less of you because of this." Penny said
Rosie still stayed silent.
Penny drove them home.
"Thanks Penelope." Dave said
"Not a problem." Penny said
Rosie got out of the car.
"Bye Rosie." Penny said
"Bye." Rosie said.
David got out of the car as well and helped Rosie into the house. They still had her crutches from when she sprained her ankle a few months ago but Dave was going to help her to her room and than go get them. When they got inside Sascha got excited and was jumping all around till he saw she was hurt, and he started to whine. He followed her and Dave upstairs and laid on his dog bed watching her
Rosie pet his head a bit "Good boy. I'm okay." She assured him before she looked at her dad
"I need a shower." Rosie said
Dave nodded. "You going to be okay standing to do that?"
"Maybe a bath would be better." Rosie said
"Agreed. Be careful though. When you are done I will have lunch ready. I'm making mediterranean pasta." Dave said
Rosie nodded. "Okay." It was still her favorite.
Dave went and started to make dinner. Rosie texted Nolan. 'I am home.' Before she crutched to her bathroom and started the bath. She grabbed some bubble bath from under her counter and put some in before she climbed in turning off the water when she was fully covered in water and bubbles. She closed her eyes and tried to forget everything that was going on even if it was just for a few minutes. She was in the bath for a full hour before she carefully climbed out and got dressed in a pair of track pants and a hoodie. She grabbed the crutches and started to crutch downstairs.
Sascha was already down there. Dave had let him outside to do his business and made sure he had food and water. Dave was just finishing up making them lunch.
He served them both up some of the pasta and got them both some water and sat down with Rosie.
"Good bath?" Dave asked
Rosie nodded. "It was very relaxing. Almost fell asleep in there." Rosie said
"You must be pretty tired. You should nap this afternoon." He told her
"Maybe." Rosie said.
Dave had read in the pamphlets that he shouldn't comment on her eating. To just serve her a normal portion and let her eat it.
Rosie did eat. Slowly. She was having a hard time getting her mind off of what was going into her body and Dave could see that it was hard for her, but he knew that this was important.
"What's going on at school right now? Anything big with photography?" He asked
"I got picked to be the yearbook photographer for my grade this year." Rosie said
"Again? That's amazing. I'm so proud of the hard work that you put into photography." Dave said
"Thanks." She said
"How about classes? Any tests coming up?" Dave asked
"Have a test tomorrow actually." She said
"You've been studying?" Dave asked
"Yup. Its social studies." Rosie said
"Wasn't that your hardest subject last year?" Dave asked
"Yeah. It was. But this year its easier." Rosie said
Dave smiled.
"Any drama within the friend group at the moment?" He asked
"Nope." She said pulling at her lip with her teeth.
Dave raised an eyebrow but decided not to call her on it right now as she was eating.
"How was the case in Tennessee?" Rosie asked
"It was fine. Was pretty much done when I was leaving. Everyone is back at this point." Dave said
Rosie nodded abit. "How long are you planning on being off?"
"Until I feel like you are going to be okay. But don't worry about that." Dave said
"I'm sorry dad." She said putting her fork down
Dave took a breath. "You do not need to apologize. I know this isn't your fault. This is your brain playing tricks on you and you just need help. Its no different than if you got cancer or something like that. It is not your fault. You are going to beat this."
Rosie nodded abit.
"Now. Finish eating." He said
"I'm done…" she said
"You agreed to let me be in control of your food. I have given you what I know is your normal portion. You need to finish it." He said
Rosie took a breath. "But I'm full…"
"Rosie. Eat. We are not leaving this table till its done." He said. He hated this. This was everything that he hated about food. He had always been forced to sit and finished his plate even when he didn't want to as a kid. He told himself he would never do that to his children. Yes this was a different situation but even still he hated it.
Rosie huffed and crossed her arms leaning back in the chair.
"I don't want to be the bad guy in this situation but know that this is going to be the new normal. Now. You can sit and sulk but that's not going to change a thing. You will finish the food on your plate." Dave said
Rosie said nothing.
"Rosie. You are dealing with an illness. Food. Is your medicine." Dave said
"So, I don't need to take the supplements than?" Rosie asked with a snarky attitude.
"That is to help your body produce what you don't naturally get enough of. And that's because of the long-term effects of the first time your eating disorder was triggered." Dave said
Rosie didn't say anything.
"Rosie. If you don't do what your supposed to you are going to get weaker and weaker to the point where you wont be able to feed yourself. You will end up in the hospital getting IV nutrition. And I know deep down you don't want that. I get it you are scared. But so am I. I will not let you get to that point. I will get you into inpatient treatment and I'm getting the feeling that will be very easy with the way Orrick was talking." Dave said
Rosie let a few tears fall.
"Rosie I love you. And I need you to remember that you are so much more than a number on a scale or the way you look. Or the way your brain makes you think you look." Dave said
Rosie looked away.
"Think about the hell you went through in California. You came out of that. You are so strong. You made it through this disease when you were there and didn't have the kind of family support that you have now. You will do this again." Dave said
Rosie took a breath and wiped at her eyes.
Dave got up and went and hugged her. Rosie sobbed into him. Once she had calmed down he let her go.
"Please finish your plate." Dave said
Rosie turned back to the plate as Dave went and sat back on his seat.
Rosie forced herself to finish the plate. Dave was relieved that they had gotten through the first battle, but he knew it was just the start.
Dave got up and picked up both their plates and went and put them in the sink.
"What do you want to do right now?" Dave asked her "We could watch a movie? Play a board game?"
Rosie shrugged.
"We could talk? About what's going on in your head." Dave said
Rosie let out a breath.
"What did Nolan tell you?" Rosie asked
"Nothing. Is there something he should have told me? Or that you should be telling me?" Dave asked
Rosie shrugged.
"Come. Lets go talk." He said handing her the crutches.
Rosie stood up and followed him to the living room.
Where they both sat on the couch.
"So. What's going on?" Dave asked
Rosie shrugged.
"What did you tell Nolan?" Dave asked
Rosie sighed but said nothing.
"Okay. Well. I know you were lying about drama at school. What's going on there?" He asked
Rosie shrugged.
Dave rubbed his face in frustration. A voice popped into his head 'don't push her to talk when she isn't ready. She will come to you with everything some day if you let her come to you.' It was Carolyn's voice. He remembered her telling him that when he had called her to tell her Rosie had been found. He took a breath. "I just want to help you. I want you to know that you can come to me. With everything. I'm not going to come down on you for coming to me and being honest. About anything. You can always talk to me. Trust me if you have done something I did something ten times worse growing up." Dave said
Rosie chuckled a bit.
"And I was afraid to talk to my parents. I don't want that to be our relationship." Dave said
Rosie took a breath. "Someone at school has been making comments to me… about my weight."
Dave took a breath. "Who?"
"I don't want to say." Rosie said
"That girl who was bullying you? Sierra? Who?" Dave asked again
"Neither." She said looking up at him in tears.
"Who?" Dave asked
"Someone in my friend group." Rosie said
"Guy or girl?" Dave asked
"Guy." Rosie said
Dave nodded. "And I think I know Nolan enough to say its not him."
"No. He is ready to kick the ass of whomever it is." Rosie said
"Someone who came to your party?" Dave asked
Rosie shrugged.
"So yes." Dave said
"Most of my friends at school came. Only a few freshman from this year that weren't there last year to be invited." Rosie said
Dave nodded.
"If I tell you. You're going to go to the school or his parents. This whole thing will come out. I don't want all my friends to know…" Rosie said
"Did Lexi or Paige judge you when you went through this before?" Dave asked
"Not to my face." Rosie said
"Do you know of them doing it behind your back?" Dave asked
"I overheard Paige talking about it with someone else at school. It was a little harder to hide it when you pass out at school…" She said
Dave nodded.
"I talked to Lexi about it. She told me she didn't judge, and she told Paige off for it." Rosie said
"See. Lexi. Was your true friend. I don't think Paige was…" Dave said
"Oh. I know she wasn't. I see that so much more now." Rosie said
"So. Your true friends. Wont judge you. The guy who said these things to you isn't." Dave said
Rosie took a breath.
"Is it one of the guys you are closer too? Nolan's best friend?" Dave asked
"No. I'd say Pierce, Tyson and Nathan are his best friends. Wasn't any of them." Rosie said
"Okay." Dave said
"That really narrows it down." Dave said
"Three more options." Rosie said
"Rosie. How about we make a deal. You don't let the words of this jerk get under your skin anymore and we can drop it? If he makes more comments you talk to me, and we work though it together." Dave said
Rosie nodded. "Deal."
"If you change your mind and want me to get involved. I can skip telling the school and just go to his parents. If you would prefer. I just want to help you." Dave said
"I'll keep that in mind." Rosie said
"You want to tell me exactly what has been said?" Dave asked
"Told me I was getting chunky and that if I get much bigger Nolan wont be able to put his arms around me and that he would leave me if it came to that." Rosie said
Dave shook his head. "Bambina. You know Nolan wouldn't. And I hesitate to ask you this, but have you actually gained much weight lately?" Dave asked
Rosie shrugged. "I've been to scared to look at the scale…"
"Well. I don't think you really need to weigh yourself. And I really don't think you have gained any. At least not enough that is noticeable." Dave said. "I think he is saying this things just to get under your skin for some reason. Is it known that you struggled in the past with an eating disorder?"
"Yeah. Sierra somehow found out and told the group." Rosie said
"This guy and Sierra? Were they or are they still close?" Dave asked
"Not any closer than any of the other guys I think. Except Pierce and Nathan. The three of them grew up together from daycare through when things went down they were best friends. But they don't even talk to her anymore. As far as I know." Rosie said
Dave nodded. "You sure you don't want to give me a name?"
"Yes. I'm sure." Rosie said
"Okay. I'm here if you change your mind. Now you need to ice your ankle. I'll go get you an ice pack." He said. He went and grabbed her one and brought it to her putting it on her ankle.
Rosie fell asleep on the couch soon after. Dave covered her went out to his car to look for something. He noticed that next door a couple and a slightly older man were leaving the house but didn't think much about it. The couple left and the other man came over.
"You're Dave Rossi?" He asked
Dave nodded. "Hunter Maddox?"
"Yes. I was just wondering if Rosie was okay?" Hunter asked
"She's okay. Sprained ankle. Her boyfriend and his father ended up taking her to the hospital." Dave told him
"Oof. Well at least she got it looked at." Hunter said
"Yup. Thank you for helping her. I appreciate it." Dave said
"Of course. Like I told you I have six daughters. I hope someone else would do that same for any of them." Hunter said
"Six daughters. You and your wife must have your hands full." Dave said
"Ex-wife. But yeah. Thankfully the divorce was amicable, and we co-parent well together." Hunter said
Dave nodded. "Amicable divorce is not something you hear much about."
"Yeah. Well. When you realize that your not into women it kinda puts you in a situation of either continuing with a marriage that will end up being bitter or letting things go and keeping the friendship and keeping thing healthy. Especially with six kids." Hunter said
Dave was a little stunned for words but quickly found the right words to say. "Yeah. I sometimes wonder if that is the real reason my three marriages never ended well. Because the romantic feelings weren't entirely there." Dave said
"Ah. Is that why things didn't work out with Rosie's mother?" Hunter asked
"Um. Possibly but actually her mother and I were a one-night stand that was fueled by far to much alcohol. We stayed friends but she unfortunately passed when Rosie was born." Dave said
"Oh. I'm sorry." Hunter said
"Thanks. I'm so grateful for the family I have made of the team I work with. A few strong woman who have been good role models for her and woman she can go to with anything she doesn't want to talk to her dad about," Dave said. "Without them I would not be handling this single father to a teenager thing."
"Yeah. My oldest just turned thirteen. So, its just starting for me." He said
"How many will be teenagers at the same time?" Dave asked
"The oldest will turn twenty the year the youngest turns thirteen so five out of six." Hunter said
"I wish you luck. One teenage girl is a lot." Dave said with a smirk.
"She seems like a good kid. I think you have done a good job." Hunter said.
"Thanks. And thanks again for helping her. I owe you a drink." Dave said. He took out a business card. Let me know when you have some free time." Dave handed it to him.
"I will do that." Hunter said taking the card.
They said their goodbyes and Dave went back inside.
He checked on Rosie before going to his office to get the paperwork from this case done. He knew he needed to at least finish the paperwork before taking his leave.
